Boxing Day confirms the arrival of one heavy-hitting Gunners midfield asset, only for their star middle man to suffer an injury that threatens to trigger a wave of transfer activity. While thousands of Fantasy managers will be occupied by that particular pairing, a certain Saints striker remains largely ignored as he goes on providing ample points for a paltry sum.

The Game Changer

Theo Walcott’s impact on his return from injury has been almost instant. His brace at Upton Park turned the game Arsenal’s way and confirmed that Walcott is back amongst the top-level Fantasy assets available.

In truth, we’ve been crying out for Walcott’s arrival in our season. His record of 14 goals and 13 assists last season pointed towards great things this campaign but, derailed by injury, Walcott’s Fantasy potential has been tempered as the midfield has failed to keep pace with the output of our forwards. Until now.

Four goals in his three league starts suggest that Walcott can compete with the very top midfield assets, surpassing the scoring rate of his much-vaunted team-mates Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey through sheer goal power. With David Silva and Eden Hazard also showing some consistency, focus is back on the expensive midfield targets.

Owned by just 5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, a state of alert was declared with Walcott’s previous brace, mentioned in this article. Today’s returns will heighten that initial interest into a frenzy which is likely to accelerate significantly as January wildcards are laid down.

The Underused

The Gameweek drew focus on our Fantasy forward lines, as we contemplated the gamble of overlooking the devastating form of Luis Suarez. The likes of Wayne Rooney and Romelu Lukaku tempted the armband with so many Fantasy managers boasting one or both in their squads. Indeed, despite the recent injury to Sergio Aguero, few have considered dismantling their “template” strike force – it’s meant that Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez has struggled to get the Fantasy recognition he deserves.

Rodriguez notched a brace and an assist in Southampton’s fine 3-0 win at Cardiff to take him to eight league goals from his last 12 starts. That kind of strike rate, for an FPL fee of just 6.0, allows him to top the “value” rankings on 13.6, ahead of Luis Suarez.

Just as there is no doubt about the established pool of players that make up the typical forward line, there can be little argument on which player offers the best value for those who choose to risk plunging the price brackets.

Right now only 6% have dared cheapen their forward line and take up the Rodriguez option. With further heavy-hitting midfield options opening up, it will interesting to see how the January wildcard changes that particular statistic.

The Selection Poser

Aaron Ramsey’s rise to near essential status has been slowed of late thanks to a harsh fixture list and the potential return of Theo Walcott. Today’s events not only underlined Walcott’s appeal as an explosive alternative to Ramsey, it also saw the Welshman suffer an injury that could signal the first significant bout of sales.

Arsene Wenger has announced that Ramsey’s thigh injury suffered in the second-half at West Ham today, will rule him out for the rest of the Christmas programme. While some will wait for scans and further details, the news will mean Ramsey will sit out matches with Newcastle and Cardiff in the next four days. A Gameweek 21 return on January 13 could be on the cards, although the nature and severity of the injury is not yet clear.

Significantly, the injury comes off the back of a spell that has seen Ramsey return goals in just one of his last eight league matches. While a pair of assists has calmed any panic, that dip in form, coupled with today’s injury, will likely prove the catalyst for sales.

Having risen to 7.6 form an initial value of 5.5, Ramsey has a long way to fall, with thousands set to sacrifice funds when the decision to sell on is made. Again, the January wildcard will bring the Ramsey situation into focus. There’s little doubt that if Ramsey goes into the New Year sidelined, as expected, we will see a lot of movement away from the season’s stand-out midfielder, heading in the direction of Walcott. Current transfer statistics in the FPL already confirm such a trend, with Walcott and Ramsey topping the transfers in and out tables just a few hours after the final whistle.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Perhaps your right, my hits haven't really come off this season. I normally try to avoid but trying to squeeze in Wally so I can have Hazard, Silva and Wally. My front three are Rooney, Negrado and Suarez but guess I'll want Augero back in when fit and will have to downgrade a midfielder to do that...

Last year, when Chelsea played ManU on a Monday in the FA cup after both had played on the Saturday, Benitez said that it was "physiologically impossible" to play with so little rest.

Why are there any games at all on Saturday? Why not have them all on Sunday and guarantee at least a few days of rest. (I know, I know... money & TV contracts)...

He may play-- not saying he won't...but until he nails down a spot, you're going to be sweating his inclusion each week. And Arsenal have a lot of options, as said below by The Shadow.

Sure thing...but I just feel he's too expensive to be playing around with in the bench/start game every week.

Consistent playing time is step 1 in amassing points in any fantasy sport.

Podolski, right now, would have to be considered a punt.

I think it's a coin toss between he and Remy. And Hooper just keeps firing them in (3 g in last 4). Lambert seems to be feeling it again (Goals in back to back games and total of 3 Bonus) too.

Everton keep giving up damned penalties (and ruining my double cleanies!)...

But, as for fixtures, yeah, I'm not SUPER confident that any of these choices will explode next week...that's what you get when you're shopping in the mid-tier. Higher risk.

Arsenal 1 clean sheet in last 4.

That would be a surprise because obviously he was some way short of 100%.

It may have triggered something where the absolute number of transfers out causes the fall by itself.

That's what I mean, look at his ownership. Because it was so high, the number of transfers required for a fall is very high (it's a % of ownership). But I recall people mentioning that there is an absolute number of transfers out that triggers a fall and he probably would bust it.

For some reason, any time Özil passes -50% on Total FPL, he drops in price.

Özil is the only player for whom the Total FPL system doesn't work (or for whom there's a glitch on FPL itself in terms of NTI levels, who knows), but this has happened three times now, so it's fairly consistent as a phenomenon.

If Ozil keeps dropping I might get him in the winter WC and have an Ozil-Walcott double up in midfield. Hazard the 3rd midfielder, two budget mids, and Rooney Aguero Suarez up front. Budget defence and goalies.

Nah mutch is just a filler. Jrod has a long run of good fixtures that he can play every week in. If you look at the run of fixtures for arsenal from gw21 onwards Ozil and wally will both keep raking it in. It's flexible too like if i want aguero or something I can just pick the weakest link in midfield and downgrade to the best mid pricer available.

For real. I been at this for about 6 seasons or so, and can't remember a season so trying. I'm still sub 200K, but that's not the kind of rank that I shoot for or expect. Some of it has been my own fault, I guess. Too much tinkering this year. Plus, I moved and am looking for a new job. Excuses, excuses!

Your advice is about as good as it gets in terms of fantasy strategy. That's basically how I have always approached it. This season, for some reason, I lost sight of my methods a bit. Not majorly. Enough to have me ranked much higher than I probably should be, however. That being said, my rank is what I deserve. That's that. I will rise, though.

Terrible week this week and now in a bind with injuries/red cards:

Howard Myhill - Howard suspended and Myhill no longer playing
Mert, Coleman, Debuchy, Burner, Chester - No issues in the back
Ozil, Hazard, Ramsey, Whittingham, Brady - All sorts of issues here, Ramsey/Brady injured and Ozil just seeming in an overpriced funk
Suarez, Negredo, Lukaku - Lukaku only issue here

So I cannot field a full team without moving one of the goalies this week, and even then it'd have to be a 5-3-2....

    Worth a -4 or -8 this week?

    Things I'm considering:
    Ramsey - Walcott
    Lukaku - Rooney
Howard - someone (maybe Robles as Everton's fixtures still very nice the next 3 weeks)
Myhill - someone and riding out the 3 weeks without Howard
    Brady - Cabaye/Lallana/Rodriguez/Barkley...someone

Thoughts on any of these and how much of a hit to or not to take? Currently in 26th thousandth place after I derailed this week.

I captained evil this week as that was my rule. I can see enough of a trend now though, he was shut out of the game against Arsenal and shut out of the game against City. I reckon Mourinho is definitely in that class. I'd definitely look elsewhere, maybe Feo, maybe Roonpig.

Not squandering chances isn't exactly Theo's strong point. He can still give Giroud a run for his money in wastefulness. But it wasn't till AFTER his two goals that Theo actually began receiving passes consistently in the final third, so I think that confidence did have something to do with it.

Everton REALLY need more potent offensive options to give Lukaku a little space. If Roberto doesn't make a transfer splash, I'll be stunned. He has to know that's what he needs more than anything.

I think you are good to go, as long as the bottom line is your bench, which I assume it is. Would keep starters as they are.

Dropped out of last man standing 🙁 It was a nice challenge. Lasted 18 weeks.

I think so. He blanked for me this week but he was very unlucky and had another great game. Will be a differential this week too.

The same reason I captained Suarez last minute; taking it from Walcott.

So you got the same points as 58% of managers - who went with Suarez (C). Chin up Keiti.
