In his first foray into the transfer market since being installed as Sunderland manager, Gus Poyet snapped up former Bolton defender Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina. The 23-year-old arrives on loan until the end of the season as the Black Cats boss looks to bolster his backline in the Wearsiders’ bid to beat the drop:

With just a single league start and a couple of sub appearances to his name for the Italian outfit this term, Alonso is clearly relishing the chance to kick-start his career again. Speaking to the Sunderland official website, he admitted Poyet’s presence played a crucial role in his decision to return to the English top-flight:

“The head coach is giving me a very good opportunity and I’m just very happy to be here and now I’ll do my best to help the team. He’s very good for me. He speaks Spanish so I understand him very well and also he did great as a manager at Brighton – he played very good football. He has so many good experiences from his time at Chelsea and Tottenham – it’s great to work with someone with that much experience and I will try to learn as much as I can…It’s not the first time I’m going to play in the Premier League so I don’t think I need to get used to anything – I just will play. The stadium is great and also the fans – when I played here [with Bolton] the atmosphere was incredible.”

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Alonso played 39 times for the club’s B side and found the net on three occasions. The raiding left-back made just a single first-team appearance back in 2010, as a 90th minute substitute, before making his way to Bolton Wanderers for a fee in the region of £2.2m.

Tentatively used by the Trotters, Alonso made just nine appearances over two seasons in the Premier League, scoring once, before the club dropped into the Championship for the 2012/13 season. Finally handed a chance to nail down a regular role, he demonstrated an impressive attacking streak from the back and chipped in with four goals and a pair of assists over 26 league appearances. His displays saw the local press vote Alonso Bolton’s Player of the Year last term and persuaded Fiorentina to snap him up on a three-year deal.

As mentioned above, the 23-year-old has been afforded little opportunity to make an impact in Italy. With Manuel Pasqual firmly ahead of him in the Fiorentina left-back pecking order, he’s appeared just three times for the fourth-placed side in Serie A. On the international stage, Alonso has represented his native Spain at Under 19 level on four occasions.

The Prospects

Certainly, the Spaniard’s prospects of holding down a regular role look good. Poyet seems unconvinced by Andrea Dossena and has handed the former Liverpool defender just one start in the last six league games – Phil Bardsley has mainly been utilised on the left instead, with Andrej Celustka benefitting from game time on the opposite side of the back-four.

Speaking to the press upon completion of the deal, the Sunderland manager is clearly a fan of his new recruit:

“It’s a position we’ve been looking to strengthen and he’s a player we like a lot. I watch a lot of Spanish football and I saw him play for Real Madrid. When he joined Bolton, it surprised me. At Brighton, I was looking for a player in that position, but when he went to Fiorentina that interest stopped. However, I have always kept an eye on him and he became available again. It wasn’t easy convincing Fiorentina to let him come but he wanted to.”

Finally given clearance to make his debut last night, Alonso was immediately handed the left-back berth in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg win over United. His presence in defence allowed the versatile Bardsley to switch to his natural right-back position and, with John O’Shea fit to partner Wes Brown in the middle after recovering from a shoulder problem, Poyet’s selection may well prove to be his first-choice defence for the remainder of the season.

Having produced five clean sheets in the last 10 Gameweeks, the Wearsiders’ backline is certainly worthy of our consideration. The upcoming fixtures further their appeal – their remaining nine matches at the Stadium of Light (SOT, STO, HUL, WBA, CPL, WHM, EVE, CAR, SWA) suggest clean sheet returns could well be on the cards, with the likes of Cardiff offering a strong home/away partnership for those looking to rotate.

So far, Alonso has only been added to the Sky Sports game, at a price of 4.3, though he’s expected to come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). For those overlooking Vito Mannone between the sticks, Brown and Bardsley set you back 4.3 and 4.5 respectively in FPL. Given that Bardsley has already scored twice in 13 league appearances under Poyet, he looks the likeliest target for points at both ends of the pitch – his fellow full-back is likely to struggle to earn our attentions, then, though that may just change if he can replicate the attacking displays of last term at the Reebok.

Jeez, the fixture list alone is making this WC planning damn tricky, the uncertainty over injuries is just adding to the pain.
One of Baines, Silva, Hazard, Roon, Suarez & Aguero has to go.

I think people just view Gerrard as a defensive midfielder, and it's true that his playing position isn't as advanced as Lallana/Eriksen. However, he's only blanked once since Suarez returned and is on pens, as well as some FKs and corners. Good immediate fixtures too. He's definitely in my team that's for sure 🙂

Depends what other coverage you have...

I did Wally -> Ozil for a hit cause
        - no attacking ARS cover
        - planning to keep him for a while
        - raising in price and might be out of reach later. remember he's at the lowest price ever (for 20 more mins 🙂
        - peace of mind. can't see a better arsenal attacking player.
        - leading my ML, so I'll let the others take punts.

None of the above? Assuming you are on WC have you much faith in any of those team defenses? Would rather go a cheaper rotating pair myself. or Boruc/Davis.

Is Nicolas Anelka a viable cheap option again seems nailed on as of late and has two goals to his name. He seems a good way if you want 5 big midfielders.

After asking about differentials and getting responses of just pick the players that will get you the most points. What do we think of this side?

          Lloris Mannone

          Mertesacker Zabaleta Terry B.Turner Chester

I like it . You could drop Zab- Nastasic and Terry- Azpi if you wanted to save some cash. If you hold them it gives you options to downgrade later, though.

If you get him now you have option to sell later and you will likely make money as he will be the midfielder of choice in Arsenal and most players will get Arsenal coverage.

It is hard going, a bit marmite-ish but there are some gems. Anyone who writes a song with a chorus of 'he's playing vegetable - vegetable games' in a love torn melody has my vote, I think.

I should keep to myself over this but I read something that grinned my gears.

I don't know Forca nor have been on here long enough to have any relationship with him. I don't know what he has done and I'm not going to get into specific. But I read this comment by Mark

"This is why we discourage discussion of users, particularly those under moderation. Typically, they split the community and it's unfair to have them discussed when they are under moderation.

Jonty has linked to his earlier post on this. Let's leave this there and limit discussion on this matter from now on.

          Thanks."

For anyone associated with the site (owner, admin, etc...) to try to censor a forum with such a strike totalitarian comment is really in poor taste imo. You already banned this guy I don't think there is any need to completely control peoples opinion on forca or the situation.

As I said I don't want to get into specific because I don't anything about forca I'm just going off what I have read as far as the sites decision to reject replies to any comment featuring his name or comment he has made.

P.s - If this has broken some of the terms and condition, you can kick me off the site as well. I only use this site for the forum because of it's creative, strange, intelligent and smacking talking users. The users make this site!

I miss you Forca but we have to have some compassion with the ownership of this site and their responsibilities. Sometimes it is not just thereselves they are looking out for but you as an individual.

Some drunken comment you make on a forum can actually make you libel for a serious offense under the juristiction of law.

I think we all need to consider our own behavior sometimes and take account that moderation on any prolific site has to be taken very seriously.

As I said I didn't post this to get into specific because I don't know the situation. My point is their is a certain freedom of speech associated with a forum, especially want that we pay for.

But you are correct everyone needs to be aware of how there actions (words) may affect others.

I didn't know Forca or the comment he made that lead to his banning. A forum can truly be a beautiful thing with great minds coming together. I understand terms and condition and they should be upheld but basically telling us we can't speak on a subject or on a person is poor.

I understand your sentiments. Unfortunately this site can not entertain total freedom of speech as it bound by certain laws that leave it vulnerable to racism. homophobia and many others.

I think you will find if you try to find a balance with your passion and personality and link it to a respectfulness of other users of this forum then you will not encounter any problems. ,

Totally agree. And of course by supporting freedom of speech on the site I'm not supporting racism or homophobia nor do I believe those comment should have a place here.

I have had my wrist slapped on here on many occasions because I forget that this is essentially a site dedicated to football.

Many people have died so we can criticize and talk openly in a free society but we must acknowledge the constraints put on us by the the football agenda on this brilliant site.

The problem lies from the fact that Forca in this case doesn't have the option to reply to any comments now, good or bad. Some are like you & are neutral in this situation & others have a strong view either way. That's the bottom line.

As I said I'm not defending his actions or the things he has said. I'm just saying this situation (the things that were said by moderators) seem a bit controlling. Mentioning that we cannot speak about this subject or person (which is not braking any terms listed in the link) seem to violate our right to freedom of speech on this forum.

"Freedom of speech" may be a bit strong of a term. But it is evident what I mean by this.

                Read the guidelines

                Don’t discuss other users.
"It’s very rare that discussion of another user is anything but dull or uninteresting for anyone but a very small minority. Such discussions can also lead to negativity, claims of bullying and generally upset the atmosphere. Think of new users coming to the site viewing long discussions about another poster – it’s hardly welcoming and suggests that Fantasy Football Scout is an unfriendly place. We won’t allow this so, if we see comments of this nature, more often or not, they will be removed."

                Do not argue with us.
"We make the rules and we’ll impose them accordingly. You may not always agree with decisions made but admins and moderators won’t be drawn into discussions or disputes on the site. We will remove such comments and even moderate your account if you continue to argue your point. If you’ve got an issue with the treatment of your comments, then drop us a line at community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk and we’ll take it from there."

Hey, isn’t this censorship? What happened to freedom of speech?
"If you search hard enough, you’ll find plenty of places on the internet where you can express yourself freely without rules. At Fantasy Football Scout, we try to keep the discussion on the site informative, free flowing and fun for visitors new and old. We will remove or moderate any comment or post that we feel is harmful to that endeavor. Sometimes, your comment may be removed because it is connected to another comment which is being removed – we hope you can appreciate the motive behind such a decision. In a nutshell the admins and moderators have the final say on what’s permitted according to the rules above."

And this is in the rules as well

"Do not seek to start discussions about other users, particularly with regards to their identities, accounts or status on the site."

This would just go on for days otherwise. A decision has been made & people need to move forward. Most of us just want the next GW to start rather than repetition of a topic that has an outcome that won't be changing tomorrow. Everyone has by now had a say in their own way.
