In his first foray into the transfer market since being installed as Sunderland manager, Gus Poyet snapped up former Bolton defender Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina. The 23-year-old arrives on loan until the end of the season as the Black Cats boss looks to bolster his backline in the Wearsiders’ bid to beat the drop:

With just a single league start and a couple of sub appearances to his name for the Italian outfit this term, Alonso is clearly relishing the chance to kick-start his career again. Speaking to the Sunderland official website, he admitted Poyet’s presence played a crucial role in his decision to return to the English top-flight:

“The head coach is giving me a very good opportunity and I’m just very happy to be here and now I’ll do my best to help the team. He’s very good for me. He speaks Spanish so I understand him very well and also he did great as a manager at Brighton – he played very good football. He has so many good experiences from his time at Chelsea and Tottenham – it’s great to work with someone with that much experience and I will try to learn as much as I can…It’s not the first time I’m going to play in the Premier League so I don’t think I need to get used to anything – I just will play. The stadium is great and also the fans – when I played here [with Bolton] the atmosphere was incredible.”

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Alonso played 39 times for the club’s B side and found the net on three occasions. The raiding left-back made just a single first-team appearance back in 2010, as a 90th minute substitute, before making his way to Bolton Wanderers for a fee in the region of £2.2m.

Tentatively used by the Trotters, Alonso made just nine appearances over two seasons in the Premier League, scoring once, before the club dropped into the Championship for the 2012/13 season. Finally handed a chance to nail down a regular role, he demonstrated an impressive attacking streak from the back and chipped in with four goals and a pair of assists over 26 league appearances. His displays saw the local press vote Alonso Bolton’s Player of the Year last term and persuaded Fiorentina to snap him up on a three-year deal.

As mentioned above, the 23-year-old has been afforded little opportunity to make an impact in Italy. With Manuel Pasqual firmly ahead of him in the Fiorentina left-back pecking order, he’s appeared just three times for the fourth-placed side in Serie A. On the international stage, Alonso has represented his native Spain at Under 19 level on four occasions.

The Prospects

Certainly, the Spaniard’s prospects of holding down a regular role look good. Poyet seems unconvinced by Andrea Dossena and has handed the former Liverpool defender just one start in the last six league games – Phil Bardsley has mainly been utilised on the left instead, with Andrej Celustka benefitting from game time on the opposite side of the back-four.

Speaking to the press upon completion of the deal, the Sunderland manager is clearly a fan of his new recruit:

“It’s a position we’ve been looking to strengthen and he’s a player we like a lot. I watch a lot of Spanish football and I saw him play for Real Madrid. When he joined Bolton, it surprised me. At Brighton, I was looking for a player in that position, but when he went to Fiorentina that interest stopped. However, I have always kept an eye on him and he became available again. It wasn’t easy convincing Fiorentina to let him come but he wanted to.”

Finally given clearance to make his debut last night, Alonso was immediately handed the left-back berth in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg win over United. His presence in defence allowed the versatile Bardsley to switch to his natural right-back position and, with John O’Shea fit to partner Wes Brown in the middle after recovering from a shoulder problem, Poyet’s selection may well prove to be his first-choice defence for the remainder of the season.

Having produced five clean sheets in the last 10 Gameweeks, the Wearsiders’ backline is certainly worthy of our consideration. The upcoming fixtures further their appeal – their remaining nine matches at the Stadium of Light (SOT, STO, HUL, WBA, CPL, WHM, EVE, CAR, SWA) suggest clean sheet returns could well be on the cards, with the likes of Cardiff offering a strong home/away partnership for those looking to rotate.

So far, Alonso has only been added to the Sky Sports game, at a price of 4.3, though he’s expected to come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). For those overlooking Vito Mannone between the sticks, Brown and Bardsley set you back 4.3 and 4.5 respectively in FPL. Given that Bardsley has already scored twice in 13 league appearances under Poyet, he looks the likeliest target for points at both ends of the pitch – his fellow full-back is likely to struggle to earn our attentions, then, though that may just change if he can replicate the attacking displays of last term at the Reebok.

Hey. I'm struggling to setup a decent draft with Aguero in it and some ooooomph in the midfield without sacrificing defense... basically it's

    A) Kos + Terry + 3 cheapies + Lallana/Eriksen
    B) Kos + 4 cheapies + Ozil

Both these drafts have Silva + Haz + Ramsey + cheapo in the middle. I keep thinking that B sounds better, as the cheap defense have been returning relatively well... but it all depends on Eriksen and Ozil's form going forward, naturally.

Anyone else considering going really cheap at the back?

I have used my WC this round and I need some advice on my team.

    Boruc Davies
    Nasty Turner Baines (Bardsley Chester)
    Eriksen Özil Silva Hazard (Livermore)
    Lukaku Suarez JRod

My plan is to get Ramsey for Özil next round and

    Question..
I got in Wally when he was 9.3m - he was just making his way back from injury then..
He is now 9.5m.. and due to drop a lot more.

Do i lose out if i keep him until just before the deadline this week or should i be getting rid of right away?

Tough choices to make about who to bring in.
Cant afford Ozil so stuck with someone like Gerrard, Cazorla..but undecided.
Also want to hear more about Rooney.. May do a double switch..

If you keep until Saturday morning, you will lose 0.1m on him, which isn't that big of a deal.

If you are willing to do your transfers on Friday night after all the team news is out, he may not have dropped yet and you may be able to sell him for 9.4m and save 0.1m. His replacement may also rise before Saturday so I'd do it Friday night if you can

You get 9.4 if you sell before he drops again. when he drops .1 you will only get back the 9.3 you paid.

I expect him to drop at 01.45 Saturday morning, but just my guess here.

If you are doing a double swap, then you should still be able to get Ozil, depending on who else you go for.

How about this for a differential WC team:

    Boruc Davis
    Kolarov Sagna Azpi Bardsley Burner
    Eriksen Oscar Cazorla Dempsey Lallana
    Suarez Negredo Bony

With money in the bank to get Aguero for Negredo

I actually think it could beat the 'template' team 😮 Thoughts?

Some will outscore players on the template team, but others will crash and burn. I think a compromise between the two is the best.

      Kosc over Sagna for baps.
Azpi isn't a bad shout but may be under risk from Ivan.
Kolorav isn't nailed-on and will get too many 1 pointers. Get Nasty
Burner may lose his place to Hudson or a new CB signing
It's too early to get Dempsey in IMO. I'd want to see some form first.

It actually is a differential team so kudos for that.
The art of differentials IMO is to get 2-3 to out perform the mainstream. Going too many differentials risks them cancelling each other out as some will over perform and others will under perform.
Also too many fullbacks, it's about cbs this year.

Not FPL related, but anybody here have any first-hand knowledge of the culture in Dubai? I'm considering taking a trip there, how strict is life when it comes to boozing, girls and in general all things considered fun? I'm reading sort of mixed things about it, but I know it's supposed to be the least conservative of the UAE countries.

Go and visit the bar of York Hotel then the Moscow Hotel another night. As for drinking, just don't over do it or show the taxi driver your drunk, otherwise he will take you straight to the police station where you'll spend the rest of your holidays.

Well Ive lived here for over 10 years so I can give you a little information.

As long as you dont break certain rules, you can have a great time.

There are many places to go out, from nice bars and lounges, to pubs, to night clubs.

      A lot of nice resturants.

A LOT of girls, easy pickings are emirates flight stewardess', there are certain places they go out to so once you target those its like a buffet.

I would recommend it and weather is great now

This is good stuff, thanks for the info. Basically don't get shitfaced and you're okay. I might actually be bringing a girl there if you can believe that, how are rules in terms of what she can wear, tanning at the beach, whatever? One site actually suggested tourists could get locked up for public displays of affection.

It's fine to get sh*tfaced, so long as you don't get in fights or cause a big scene.

Girls wear next to nothing on beaches and on nights out. The pool parties are particularly good fun! And PDA are fine as long as it's nothing too OTT (similar to most countries).

Possibly for a hit, something like:

              Sterling & Rooney -> Gerrard & Bony

    Y. Toure, Oscar, Ramsey, Cabaye, Colback
    RVP, Suarez, Negredo.

    left with 0.2 itb

For some reason I like this side more than my probable wc team.
    Changes
    Hazard out, Oscar in
    Ozil out, Ramsey in
    Bony out, RVP in
    Aguero out, Negredo in

    Thoughts welcome.

    Gerrard, Lallana or Eriksen?

Silva, Haz, Ozil, Adebayor, Suarez and Aguero already in the team.

Lallana, as you have the best Liverpool player already and Southampton have a great run of fixtures.

      Noone/Gnabry/Oviedo.

But just keep an eye over their playing time.

tempted to have a cheeky punt on Gnabry. Thanks for the response.

    A) Gerrard & J.Rod
    B) Lallana & Bony

I like both of B better as players, and J.Rod looks to be due a bit of regression but Gerrard has been SO consistent (one single blank from his last ten starts).

I think bony is your prob in B ,
Put a differant striker in there and you may get a differant response.
