In his first move into the transfer market since taking the reins at Cardiff, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has acquired playmaker Magnus Wolff Eikrem from Dutch club Heerenveen. The 23-year-old arrives in Wales for an undisclosed fee and, having trained with the club over the last few days, was finally given clearance to seal the deal yesterday afternoon:

Speaking to the Bluebirds’ official website, Eikrem revealed he is desperate to make an immediate impact in his new surroundings:

“I can’t wait to get started. I’ve got a big chance now. It’s a massive step from The Eredivisie, but I think I can get us playing and as said, I can’t wait to get started. It’s up to me to show that I’m good enough and to get into the team. But I know I’ll have to work hard as there are a lot of good players here. I’m sure I’ll adapt and that the manager will put his things in place, which I will adapt to as well.”

The History

A product of the Molde youth academy, Eikrem was snapped up by Man United on his sixteenth birthday in 2006 after impressing in one of Solskjaer’s Norwegian “Soccer Schools” in his native Norway.

During his time at Old Trafford, Eikrem helped the club’s youth side to a couple of cup finals before making the step up to the reserve team – which was then managed by Solskjaer. A failure to break into the first-team eventually forced the midfielder back to Molde in January 2011 and, once again under Solskjaer’s guidance, he helped the club to back-to-back league titles, producing six goals and 12 assists from 68 appearances over two-and-a-half seasons.

Eikrem’s displays earned him a move to Dutch outfit Heerenveen on a four-year deal in June last year. During his time in the Eredivise, he played 13 times, scoring twice and providing a pair of assists. The 23-year-old has represented his country at youth level on 17 occasions, scoring once, and has also turned out for the senior side 13 times.

The Prospects

Given that this will be the third time the midfielder has worked under Solskjaer, it’s fair to say the Cardiff boss believes his new acquisition is a real talent. Speaking to the club’s official website yesterday afternoon, Solskjaer summed up just what we can expect from Eikrem:

“I’ve known Magnus for many years, having worked with him at Manchester United and then signing him for Molde. While I was there I had to sell him as he was our best player – and now I feel lucky to get to sign him again for Cardiff City for a reasonable price. I see this as money well spent. He’s a playmaker, a quarterback if you will, someone who likes to get on the ball and can see a pass. He’s technically very good, including set pieces and has great vision. Magnus will add a lot to Cardiff City and will blend in very well with the midfielders in the squad.”

Eikrem is adaptable enough to play in a deep-lying role or even in “the hole” in Solskjaer’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. Potentially, though, the “quarterback” comparison suggests he could sit in the double-pivot alongside a battler such as Gary Medel and be tasked with linking defence and attack via his eye for a killer pass. Certainly, the statistics suggest Eikrem is unlikely to make his way onto Fantasy radars anytime soon, with most content to initially observe and assess whether he is capable of making an impact in the English top-flight.

The new manager’s praise for Eikrem’s set-piece abilities is something of a worry for Peter Whittingham owners, though. The latter has been the Bluebirds’ main man up till now but, with a potential midfield reshuffle on the cards, the local press have even questioned his game time under Solskjaer – a real worry for the 5.3-priced Whittingham, who has played every minute of the season up until now and has produced more points than any midfielder under 7.0.

Certainly, the club’s home schedule offers reason for optimism as the new man in charge looks to climb the table. West Ham, Norwich, Villa and Hull are the next four visitors to the Cardiff City Stadium and, with a trip to neighbours Swansea also on their agenda over the next seven, Solskjaer will be confident of picking up the points.

Whilst Eikrem – who has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League game (4.5 to 5.0 can be expected) and is priced at 4.3 in the Sky Sports game – certainly has his manager’s faith, it’s perhaps best to wait until the transfer window closes until we get an idea of Solskjaer’s plans. Although Whittingham’s prospects may take a dive, Jordan Mutch, with four goals to his name and a price of 4.6, could turn out to be the best route into the Cardiff midfield if he can retain his current starting berth.

Can afford either A) JRod + Eriksen or B) Adebayor + Lallana and i've got the former lined up at the moment.. dunno why i have so much faith in Eriksen. Really see him as an underpriced asset at the moment who could be a big hitter at a bargain price.. If the money does not matter as much would you go with A) or B)

So, do you think WC for GW 23 is the best thing?

I am not sure what big can happen in just 4 days until end of WC period (if you want to use it for GW24) but I am sure most price rises will be beetwen GW22 and 23 in those 10 days so you will need to pay much more for players you want to bring if you save WC for last GW..

A solid, proven attacking mid for £20m, a cheeky, proven wing-wizard assist-machine for £15m, and a take-no-prisoners, proven centre back for £12m, coupled with a £3m youthful punt from a Championship side to round the total up.

we don't need a attacking mid, we need a center mid who can defend and make those key passes and assist the assister, whislt chipping in with some goals. Any player like Yaya or Ramsey would do

The Marshall/Mannone partnership is a much touted cheap wc partnership. However, there does appear to be a couple of spanners flying around:

    1) OGS is targetting Norway's U21 goalkeeper Nyland, from his former club (http://bit.ly/19VgEt8), and
    2) Puyet is after Agentina's goalkeeper Andujar (http://bit.ly/19g1jCO)

Any Marshall/Mannone (pre)owners a little bit concerned about this? I know I am.

Just don't think Jrod is as good as everyone is saying... 8 goals, all in batches, majority against poor defensive teams..
Ade... 3 goals, 2 assists in 4... with Eriksen moved onto the wing and a partnership with Saldado as a pivot... Ade is essentially the out and out striker in the team with good fixtures on the way... but I don't want double Spurs cover... hence Ade for goals over Eriksen

No link. Ole played Hudson instead for his first game (cup win over Newcastle). Whether that means Burner was rested for the league or Ole prefers Hudson, no-one knows.

On the one hand it would seem strange for him to have a new favourite after just a few days at the training ground.

On the other hand, you'd think Ole would go all out to win his first game in charge.

For people currently on a wildcard. By now you've probably decided who's in and who didn't make the cut. So which of your favorites did you try and fail to fit in? and which players are top of your watchlist now that you have ideally the best team possible?
I would have really liked to have kept shaw, terry and oscar, and was wierdly keen on mirallas and bardley.
Top of my watchlist going forward are aguero, ramsey, bony, rooney and debuchey.

Yep, I see that now. I thought it was Hudson-Caulker in the match but I misread it.

I think it started as speculation of new manager, might have new favourites. And Hudson played in Ole's first game, suggesting that he might be up for a shake-up.

Know one knows what Ole will do and it seems a bit premature to me to insist either way.

Didn't plan to use my wildcard until as late as possible, but the sheer number of injuries I had this week gave me no choice. It's pretty templatey so I apologize in advance, but I'd like some advice on the goalkeepers and 5th mid as I'm pretty set on everything else.

    Marshall-Mannone
    Terry-Merte-Coleman-Ward-Chester
    Silva-Hazard-Ozil-Gerrard-4.6
    Suarez-Aguero-JRod

WIth the talks of a new Sunderland keeper, is it worth switching to someone like Jaaskelainen with a 3.9 and then spending 4.2 on a 5th mid instead? If oscar rises again then I'll be able to sell him for Gerrard this week to make that 4.3/4.7 for the 5th mid.

Keeping my keepers as they are would get me Mutch (might not be nailed on) or Redmond. Whereas switching to Jussi or Migs would get me Colback/Jedinak/Delph/Oviedo. What do we reckon?

If you want a 100% guaranteed 90-minuter for 5th mid bench fodder, it has to be Jedinak.

I'm gonna see how Ramsey looks when he gets back and maybe bring him in somewhere down the line for one of the big mids. I can then upgrade JRod after his good fixtures based on how he's performing and perhaps upgrade the 5th mid to the 5.5-6m range.

Only other thing I see is if you're going to go with 3 cheapies in the back, why not go with Burner over Gabby instead of doubling up on CP defenders. I'm considering going with the 3 cheapies myself, but seems to make more sense to have options for fixtures.

              I'm personally looking at:
              Boruc Mannone
Coleman Mert (I've had Mert since he was 5.6 otherwise I'd go with Kosc), Burner, Ward, Chester

Boruc will be back any day so he trumps Marshall for me, then you can do Turner as your Cardiff back and you're not doubling up anywhere so can rotate fixtures.

Any player at that price plays week in week out for you.
In my opinion you worked hard to get a great team value to afford the best players.
I think the highest scoring players in the game come the end of the season will be Toure, Ozil, Silva, Hazard, Suarez and Aguero so I want all of them.
There is no block of nasty fixtures for City and they are the only team that regularly absolutely crush their opposition, compared to say Chelsea who go more defensive once 2-0 up.
