With just five gameweeks left until the end of the season, we thought we’d begin the run-in with a weekly look at the chase for first place in the Fantasy Football Scout league. As many of you know, the top dog in our league last season- a certain Jon Reeson- also came first in the overall standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Can our leaders replicate the success of Jon’s all-conquering Westfield Irons squad of 2009-2010? Here’s our top five contenders:

Chris McGurn

Morons FC

Fantasy Football Scout Ranking #1 Overall FPL Ranking #2

Form & History
Chris has shown fantastic form straight from the off this season, having been inside the top 1,000 since gameweek 3. Sitting in second place overall for the last six weeks now, he is currently just 16 points off top spot.

This is his FPL third season and he’s finished comfortably inside the top 10,000 in each of the previous two Fantasy campaigns. The guy is a consistent performer.

Last Week’s Score 84 pts
Fielded five double gameweek players, including captain Robin Van Persie. Faith in Leighton Baines proved fruitful, with the Everton man equalling Van Persie’s 13 point haul, despite playing a game less. Doubling up on Chelsea’s defence was a sensible move, unfortunate not to pay dividend, while Frank Lampard’s return of 11 points was somewhat overshadowed by the performances of his team mates.

Gameweek 34 Preview
There are currently two double gameweek players (Asimir Begovic and Jamie O’Hara) in the squad, though that may well increase before the weekend. Chris is not averse to a points hit, having taken one in no less than eight gameweeks so far this season.

Big guns include Lampard at home to West Ham, Nani and Wayne Rooney squaring up to Baines’ Everton at Old Trafford, Robin Van Persie travelling to Bolton and Ashley Young home to Stoke.

Chris Prentice

MincePies

Fantasy Football Scout Ranking #2 Overall FPL Ranking #8

Form & History
Chris had an up and down first half to the Fantasy season; he finished the opening week of the season inside the top 35,000 (despite having Mauro Boselli in his gameweek 1 first XI) and has never been ranked lower. This second half of the season is where he’s really hit top form; gameweek 19 saw him break the top 1000 and he’s steadily climbed the rankings, breaking the FPL top 10 a couple of gameweeks back.
This is only his second FPL season, though a finish inside the top 20,000 last season was clearly an indication that he‘d taken to the game quickly.

Last Week’s Score 97 Points
Six double gameweek players filled the starting XI, with captain Didier Drogba hauling in 44 points. Ignoring Lampard and Malouda, Chris went for David Luiz as his only other Chelsea cover. Van Persie and Nasri came good, though only Ben Foster returned much from his defence.

Gameweek 34 Preview
At present, only Robert Huth has a double gameweek up next, suggesting he’ll need to ring the changes. Having taken point hits in five gameweeks (with four of them have produced a green arrow) a couple of trades look likely.

Main men are Drogba at home to West Ham, Nani facing Everton, Van Persie and Nasri travelling to Bolton and both Stewart Downing and Ashley Young facing Stoke at Villa Park.

Patrick Tyrrell

Scalachis Allstars

Fantasy Football Scout Ranking #3, Overall FPL Ranking #13

Form & History
Firmly entrenched inside the top 10,000 since gameweek 4, Patrick had a few red arrows until a bumper score of 130 in gameweek 23 rocketed him into the top 100, where he has been ever since. Broke the top 10 in gameweek and held steady, only to slip slightly this week.

This is his FPL fourth season and, having never been beyond the top 100,000 before, Patrick must be getting nosebleeds by now.

Last Week’s Score 83 Pts
Opted for 6 double gameweek players, with four of them defenders, though it was only Ben Foster and Roger Johnson that served up decent returns. Robin Van Persie and captain Frank Lampard combined for a 35 point haul. Leighton Baines’ 13 points were much-needed and Peter Odemwingie’s goal against Chelsea made up for the points dropped at the Hawthorns by David Luiz.

Gameweek 34 Preview
Kevin Davies is the only double gameweek player so far, though with three points hits in the last six gameweeks, changes could be afoot for Patrick’s squad.

Big guns include Lampard and Luiz hosting the Hammers, Nani and Baines squaring up at Old Trafford and Van Persie at Bolton. Elsewhere, Charlie Adam and Joey Barton line up against one another and Odemwingie looks to continue his recent hot streak away to Spurs.

Sean og Connolly

Cara Finla

Fantasy Football Scout Ranking #4, Overall FPL Ranking #20

Form and History
Sean climbed into the top 10,000 in gameweek 5 and, since then, has dropped outside that rank for just four gameweeks. One red arrow in fourteen from gameweek 18 onwards saw him progress into the top 10 in gameweek 26 and, until last week, that’s where he’s been. This is his fourth FPL season, with the previous one being his first inside the top 100,000, he‘s made huge progress this time round.

Last Week’s Score 64pts
Only 3 double gameweek players and no goalkeeper was fundamental to the drop down the rankings. Captain Lampard came relatively good, Van Persie added 13 points, but Johan Djourou returned only two points. His three Man United players done little away to Newcastle, through Patrice Evra at least grabbed a clean sheet. Ashley Young chipped in with a vital 8 points, too.

Gameweek 34 Preview
At present, only Robert Huth has a double gameweek on the horizon but after last week’s fall, you’d expect some transfers in. Sean has only taken a points hit on four occasions, though, so is a fairly cautious Fantasy player. Wayne Rooney joins Nani at home to Everton, Lampard takes on old club West Ham, Ashley Young hosts Stoke and Andy Carroll has a plum home tie with Birmingham.

Utkarsh Dalmia

Team Zophar

Fantasy Football Ranking #5, Overall FPL Ranking #23

Form & History
Utkarsh made a sensational start to the FPL season, breaking the top 100 by gameweek 4 but after a spate of red arrows, dropped out the top 1,000 by gameweek 16. Six weeks later, though, he was back and since gameweek 26 has been back in the top 100 comfort zone.

This is his second FPL season, with a finish inside the top 5,000 last time round hinting at the Fantasy pedigree to come.

Last Week’s Score 80pts
A mammoth twelve point his proved costly here, though a healthy 46 points from his three-man Arsenal contingent, including captain Van Persie, certainly helped balance things out. Didier Drogba’s 22 points made up for the disappointment of John Terry and David Luiz carding four points each, and ever-reliable Ben Foster cam good in goal.

Gameweek 34 Preview
Roberth Huth is joined by Wayne Hennessey as the two current double gameweeks names in the squad, but will Utkarsh continue a points-hit spree that has seen him shed 20 in the last 6 gameweeks? Chelsea’s home tie with West Ham looks good for Drogba and the two centre-halves, Nani and Wayne Rooney play Everton, but to hold onto the Gunners trio Walcott, Nasri and Van Persie as Arsenal visit the Reebok is a test of nerve.

However….

As mentioned above, this article will feature the top 5 in the Fantasy Football Scout league but the last couple of days have seen a new entry that will join us this weekend; the leader of our Scout Members league and the current world number four. If he’d joined up last week, this fellow would be sitting in second place on our leader board. And the guy has form. Here’s the lowdown:

Kevin Havelock

Beyond Havoc

Fantasy Football Scout Ranking N/E Overall FPL Ranking #4

Form & History
Kevin had lost 16 points in hits by gameweek 7 but, in spite of this, found his way into the top 100 by gameweek 11 and has been there ever since. He’s been in the top 10 for the last 10 weeks straight and has continued his tactic of hits, with 24 points coming off his tally in the last five gameweeks alone.

This is his third campaign, with the previous two finishes being outside the top 100,000; it’s fair to say this has been a season beyond all expectations.

Last Week’s Score 99pts
Six double gameweek players negated the eight point hit, particularly with Florent Malouda hauling in 22 points. Two Chelsea defenders done little, while captain Van Persie and Nasri came good for the Gunners. Leighton Baines boosted his score with 13 points and Rafael Van der Vaart’ s performance at the Lane proved crucial.

Gameweek 34 Preview
At present, there are no double gameweek players in the squad but his penchant for points hits will surely sway Kevin here. Surprisingly, there’s no Man United players at all, but three Chelsea, as Malouda, Cole and Luiz face West Ham. With none of our other contenders currently holding Spurs players, this weekend could be crucial, as Van der Vaart is joined by Gareth Bale for a home game with West Brom. Andy Carroll squares up to Birmingham at Anfield and Aleksander Kolarov travels to out-of-sorts Blackburn.

Thinking of making two dull but potentially worthwhile transfers-

    Nasri > Etherington
Kelly > Hangeland for -4 points

    Team would be

    Begovic

Hangeland Walker Luiz ( Johnson Carr )

    Ethers Lampard Adam Nani Young

    Rooney RVP ( Hoilett )

Since my recent transfers have been god-awful I might just stick instead. It's a shame Hoilett is doubtful as City have been poor away recently and if he scores he usually gets bps as well.

    Here's a thought regarding tomorrow's captain's poll.

    Team motivations.

Chelsea - They actually should be most motivated for this game. They're only 6 points behind now, and have won their last two so are in decent form and confidence. Expect a strong side determined to win.

Arsenal - Still only 6 behind, but their draw at Tottenham will have dropped a few heads. Despite what Wenger might say I don't think they have the stomach for the fight. Bolton are looking to bounce back and prior to the Stoke game have won their last 4 at home including 3 clean sheets.

ManUtd - Everton aren't easy, but ManUtd have to win to keep their lead. Nani will play, but I expect a tight scoreline going off form.

Stoke - They have a double gameweek, but in actual fact have little to no motivation. The players have a cup final soon, and they are on 38, safe for now from the drop. Expect them not to throw everything they've got forward in case of injury.

On this basis, the captain choices are narrowed.

Chelsea - Drogba, Lampard. Either of these guys is probably top choice.

Man Utd - Rooney. He's been itching to play, and ManUtd have to win. Expect him to be all over the pitch.

Arsenal - Van Persie. His form is just amazing, even with the team not getting results, he's involved in almost every goal. A safe/form pick, but likely not to be the team's highest.

Nice post. Looks like Drogba will be benched, so maybe not such a shoe in for Captaincy? Also still don't fancy Lampard in any way shape or form at the moment.

Rooney is a gambling choice this week which could well pay off.

Van Persie seems the obvious choice who should get decent points.

What are your thoughts on the DGW punts? Walters, Ethers, Sturridge, Dempsey and Zamora?

Don't like any DGW players for captain.

        Let's go through them...

Walters - Playing OOP striker, but for Stoke who have little to no motivation to do well in the league. No set pieces to rely on.

Etherington - Set piece specialist, no-motivation Stoke, key player so may get taken off early to preserve or protect.

Sturridge - Form striker, tough fixtures, not much midfield support.

Dempsey - Midfielder, poor form, Fulham don't have much to play for, one of my least favorite picks for captaincy this week.

Zamora - Decent form, nice fixtures, but Fulham don't have much to play for, and don't score many goals. He's also only played the 90 once since returning, so his fitness might be an issue.

For the benefit of Horizontal, and any others who wish to help:

    Mereiles or Walcott out?

    Is Drogba benchable this week?

    RVP or Walters captain?

    Quoted from previous discussion:

'I’ve decided to stick on Adam may go next week for Yaya is he underperforms. Who from the other two?

Drogba is almost certainly not starting http://www.espn.co.uk/football.....86902.html, still not benchable with the rest of my attacking options?

And I sooooooooooo want to take that Walters punt…'

Take the Walters punt and actually read the article.

The headline is in direct contradiction with the body of the text.

      "Is Drogba benchable this week?"

What Carlo's left eyebrow seems to be saying is that he will start Drogba then bring in a fresh Torres, not the other way round. So no.

      "Mereiles or Walcott out?"

Id go Merieles out, since Bolton's defence is in tatters.

      "RVP or Walters captain?"

Risk/reward. RVP is the safer option but if you need to catch up a mini league leader then Walters is a great punt. If you are protecting a lead then RVP.

      Hope that helps!

Ignoring the main body and taking just the quote:

"Maybe I can use some rotation to maintain the players' freshness," the Italian said. "It wouldn't be easy to leave Drogba out, but there's a chance we could leave him out on Saturday.

"We started with Torres against [Manchester] City. We won the game when Didier came on.

"It might be a good solution to give him the last 30 minutes of the game because he's fresh and fit."

        To me that reads:

'I want to play players that haven't played recently and rest one that have. I know Drogba is on form but I'm probably going to drop him.

It worked before, therefore it will work again.

It's a good solution because putting him on the bench keeps my commander in cheif happy that his new toy gets a try again, then Drogba can try and save me when Torres ineveitably fails again.'

That settles it, Mereieles out, had that one ready to click anyway, just pray Theo plays.

I'm protecting a lead but I'm driven more by overall ranking and want to reach top 100, so Walters?

        And yes it does, thanks.

Argh bloody Ancelotti screwing with my mind, because he says it directly after we won the game when Didier came on, I reckon he means Drogba will be fresh having not played for ages in the game, wheras is he starts he won't be so fresh and fit so won't be effective.

No, no and thrice no!!!! 😀

How can he be referring to Drogba when he's talking about someone who's "Fresh"?

Drogs to start then Torres on for the last 30.

At least, that's what I think he means. I may be wrong but I'm not going to bench Drogs.

Who do you bench? I got rid of Adam, so him.

He's been poor recently and was in a cast most of this week. IH will play him unless he gets decapitated in a car accident tomorrow. And even then they may still play him.

He's in the shop window already, as IH referred to in the post match interview last week. The guy knows he is going to go to a bigger club in the summer and has no motivation to help Blackpool stay up.

              So bench him.

Agreed, but it all depends how safe they are in the league though.

Stoke are only 5 points from the dropzone, albeit with a game in hand.

They can't afford to take their foot off the pedal.

                    I wouldn't call 38 points midtable security.

They are level with Brum and Sunderland who I wouldn't call "Secure".

I am thinkin of getting VDV in to captain him.

      Fixture wise:

      1. Lampard : best fix, very high reliance on spot kicks for points
      2. RVP : Consistent, feel a failure coming soon though
      3. O'hara : Do you really want a wolves captain?
      4. VDV : I like

VDVD is one of my trades in this week, Zophar. The other comes down to OH and Walters.

This article puts me off STK though:

        http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/football_focus/13159242.stm

My gut instinct is telling me to cap'n Lampard. Now that VDV has hit the straps again, I'm expecting a decent haul from him tomorrow.

Asks advice. Gets it. Goes away without any response.

Maybe I missed him earlier in the season when he may have been more generous in his advice.

Is RVP really so much better of a bet than Zamora for the 'safe choice?' I'd say Zamora has every bit the form (as of right now) and 180 minutes with TWO fixtures better than Arsenal's one.

To clarify, I want the 'safest choice,' I'm just wondering why that ISNT Zams?

Just my opinion, but RVP has played a lot of games, and Bolton at home are pretty formidable. The only thing going for RVP is form, and I just feel like against an organized home defense, he's going to be picking up 2 pts.

Fixture wise, you've got to go with Lampard, especially seeing as they're playing a West Ham team without Parker. I've read stuff on the West Ham supporters boards, and they're all hoping for a miracle because with a midfield of Noble and Hitzelsperger, they won't be able to hold the center. There will be Chelsea goals for sure, and Lampard hasn't really been that poor.

          I'm sticking with Lamps.

"The only thing going for RVP is form"

I'm sure we will come back to this, but isn't form pretty important?

            RVP last 5 matches: 9,2,12,7,6

            Lampard: 3,2,3,9,2

I get the impression that people with Lampard are captaining him because they had to reshape their team to get him in because he's so expensive.

Bolton's defence is a complete shambles as evidenced by the 5-0 defeat to Stoke, so why would you keep faith with Lampard when RVP could easily outscore him?

            I'm mystified....

Have Huth and Bergovic in so having A Young would basically neutralise the risk of getting nothing from those 3. If they concede then Young should play a part. If they keep a cleanie then Young will get nothing.

Or should I take a gamble with Stoke to keep shut and just bench Young.

Option 3 is the same sort of trade I'm doing.

            1. You have RVP to fall back on a cap'n.

            2. Not keen on these trades. You may as well hang onto Drogs. I thought Malouda was getting reduced gametime?

I've made the decision to boot Nani. Also Nasri, who I discovered has managed a score of 5pts or more, only 3 times since the turn of the year. Nasri for O Hara would be my current thought.

Nani may get the boot next week, cant boot him with his 9PG at home..

Thing that is good about Stoke players - Great fixture gw 35! .. not so much with the Wolves boys who have a very tough game away to Birmingham in 35.

Also Wolves are not playing the 4-5-1 in which O'hara thrived, don't you think Jarvis is a better option?

VDV , the last time he played 90 midweek and played again the weekend (vs Bolton) , he broke 🙁

You'd have to say that VDV is over any injury concerns now though.

                Prefer O Hara still.

Would rather have WOL than STK tbh-better fix and not distracted by cup finals.

            Think Drogba will start tbh.

Get rid of your Arsenal mids. VDV this week looks like a good choice considering upcoming fixtures.

            I'd do 3.

            Nasri > VdV
            Walcott > Etherington

Thought I had the season covered. So didn't think me travelling for few weeks would affect anything. Now second placed guy is 6 points behind me 🙁

No time at all to read on what's going on. Can someone help?

          Current Team
          Harper/Gordon
          Luiz,Walker,Coleman,Djourou,Kelly
          Nani,Nasri,Nolan,Barton,Malouda
          RVP,Berbatov,Rooney

Thinking of Gordon to Jaaskelainen. Any other suggestions?
          Berbatov--> Bent?
          Barton---> Dempsey?
          Nasri-->VDV

            Berbatov -> Sturridge
            Barton -> Dempsey
            Kelly -> Huth

Bardsley - every time I bench the other two they score...

Do you think Sunderland will keep a clean sheet against Wigan?
