This week’s regular Monday lunchtime article looks at the upturn in clean sheets further up the table, Liverpool’s consistent attacking options and the increased number of midfield differentials:

The premium backlines are starting to tighten…
With nearly 300,000 Wildcards played last week, there are likely to be plenty of budget defenders around, as we look to fund expensive forward lines. However, Gameweek 21 saw several of the top defences tighten up, with seven clean sheets in the nine fixtures played so far. As the title race moves towards the home straight, this could be an emerging trend as the contenders balance functionality with flair. The prime example is at Stamford Bridge, where Jose Mourinho has returned to his pragmatic days of old, with Chelsea earning a fourth clean sheet in five. Elsewhere, the returning Artur Boruc and Phil Jagielka helped Southampton and Everton to respective shut outs. With clean sheets for Tottenham and United as well, Fantasy managers have been provided food for thought as the likes of Leighton Baines, John Terry and Patrice Evra suggest premium defensive options could show their worth in the coming weeks.

Solskjaer does things his way…
The Norwegian will have been sorely disappointed with a home defeat against West Ham on his league debut at the Cardiff helm. Solskjaer would have fancied his chances facing Sam Allardyce’s side, given that the visitors had conceded 11 goals in two cup matches against Nottingham Forest and Man City but, whilst he failed to pick up the league points, The ‘Baby-Faced Assassin’ had an immediate impact on Fantasy squads after benching centre-half Ben Turner. Having played every Premier League minute under Malky Mackay, Turner was a reliable budget starter for our five-man defences, but was omitted for Mark Hudson in the 2-0 loss as the new man in charge restructured his backline. Solskjaer started the game with a 4-2-3-1 formation but switched to 3-5-2 late on, replacing Hudson with Andreas Cornelius as he went for broke – a clear sign he isn’t afraid to shake things up in his attempts to steer the Bluebirds up the table. Dropping Turner looks the first step in his restructuring process and, with Magnus Eikrem and Mats Moller Daehli arriving to add to the midfield options, owners of Peter Whittingham may be a little worried as Solskjaer starts to tinker.

Young Januzaj looks like the real deal…
As United brought their run of three straight defeats to an end, it was Adnan Januzaj who took home the man-of-the-match award. Providing the creative spark in the absence of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, the young Belgian’s display was hailed by his relieved manager as a 2-0 win over Swansea allowed David Moyes to sleep a little easier on Saturday night. With six starts in the last seven Gameweeks under his belt, Januzaj’s game time has certainly benefitted from injuries to the likes of Nani and Ashley Young and, while he failed to return the attacking points his display deserved, future returns look likely as Januzaj becomes an increasingly influential figure in Moyes’ inconsistent side. With Ross Barkley suffering a suspected broken toe and doubts over the future game time of Whittingham and Raheem Sterling, Januzaj looks to be the Fantasy asset of choice for the budget midfielder slot.

Pellegrini finding his full-back favourites…
With Micah Richards almost permanently stuck in the City treatment room, Pablo Zabaleta’s security of starts has helped find him a place in almost one in four Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams. However, on the opposite side of Manuel Pellegrini’s back-four, Aleksandar Kolarov is starting to win the ongoing battle with Gael Clichy, with the Serbian having now started four of the last five Premier League matches. With City’s fixtures looking favourable after the Wildcard window shuts, investment in City’s defence seems a viable option, with Kolarov in particular making amends for an overall lack of clean sheets with plenty attacking returns. Both Kolarov and Zabaleta have five assists each so far this season – to put this into perspective, it is only one less than the likes of popular midfielders such as Adam Lallana, David Silva and Aaron Ramsey. As we know all too well on around these parts, attacking returns have never been a problem for Kolarov – a lack of game time has been the main issue, with his lack of defensive discipline frowned upon by the pragmatic Roberto Mancini in the past. With Pellegrini favouring offensive potential from his full-backs, the Serbian is starting to secure regular minutes and may well become the City defender of choice if he continues in the same vein.

Jose settles on a new Amigo…
Throughout the first half of the season, Mourinho made it clear that Oscar and Eden Hazard would be two of his three playmakers in Chelsea’s 4-2-3-1 formation. This left Juan Mata, Andre Schurrle and Willian to battle it out for the other spot as part of the Three Amigos. It now seems that Willian, who was slow to settle after being snatched from Tottenham’s grasp, has impressed Mourinho and, having featured in the first XI in four of the last six across all competitions, could be set to offer us a midfield differential over the latter part of the season. As each match passes, Hazard has looked more essential for Chelsea and for Fantasy managers but, if Willian can remain in favour, at just 7.5 in FPL he may be an interesting option should Mourinho look for less variation in his team selection in a bid to achieve consistent Premier League results.

Liverpool’s main assets are more consistent than most..
Whilst many of their title contenders helped themselves to defensive returns, Liverpool again disappointed at the back. Six of the current top seven have already played this Gameweek – all but one of those sides delivered a clean sheet, with the Merseysiders’ being the odd team out. The Reds may be frustrating at the back as Fantasy options but further up the field, Rodgers’ attacking ethos continues to hand us reliable options. Daniel Sturridge’s goal and assist off the bench means he has delivered points in 10 of 13 appearances, whilst Steven Gerrard’s converted spot-kick helped maintain a run which has seen him score or assist in 10 of 11 starts in the same XI as Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan’s 13-point haul was no surprise, given his exploits so far, but, in a week where no other forward has returned double figures, it again highlights his armband superiority over virtually any other frontline option.

Sunderland have the form to beat the drop…
A 4-1 thrashing of Fulham helped lift the Black Cats off the bottom of the table as they finally brought their cup form to the Premier League. Gus Poyet’s side are starting to show the battling qualities required in their bid for survival and have now been beaten just once in the last nine games across all competitions. As wildcards continue to be flourished, the Wearsiders have arrived on Fantasy radars at the perfect time – three very favourable home games in the next four (SOT, STO, new, HUL) look ideal for the likes of Adam Johnson to thrive. The revitalised winger embodies the Black Cats’ recent resurgence and having produced a 22-point haul against the Cottagers, is clearly crucial for Poyet – at 6.4 in FPL, Johnson’s current ownership of 1.6% makes him a potentially devastating differential, whilst Ki Sung-Yeung, Vito Mannone and Phil Bardsley all offer sub 5.0 options across the classifications.

The midfield differentials are gathering…
It wasn’t just Johnson who turned Fantasy managers heads at the weekend, though. Christian Eriksen was again amongst the points as his form under Tim Sherwood continues – the Dane’s strike in the 2-0 win over Palace took his average to 7.2 points per game since the departure of Andre Villas-Boas and earned him further new suitors. Despite climbing in price, Eriksen remains in just 5% of Fantasy teams – Steven Gerrard, similarly, is owned by less than 6% of FPL managers, whilst the likes of Charlie Adam and Steve Sidwell notched their fifth goals of the season last weekend. Adam comes in at 5.6 and has less than 1% ownership and Sidwell, at 5.1, has persuaded just 4% to take a punt – there’s plenty ways to deviate from the template for those looking to restructure with their wildcards. Jesus Navas could be another name to add to that list. Samir Nasri’s knee injury has already been described as “serious” by Manuel Pellegrini and may well afford the Spaniard the chance to nail down a regular role on the right from here on in – at 8.3, with a 4% ownership, Navas offers a cheaper route into City’s midfield than either Yaya Toure or David Silva and may well find himself drafted into many a Fantasy plan if Nasri is indeed sidelined.

I asked this once before and got some great replies. What's your biggest FF cockup?

I don't mean not captaining Suarez, but administratively e.g. thinking you had played the WC so taking a 30 point hit.

Mine is quite tame but once logged in on a Friday, checked fixtures and made two changes only to realise it was an international weekend and there were 8 days to the deadline...

I once meant to have Chester second on the bench and Gabbidon third, but accidentally got it the other way around.

I'm quite thorough when it comes to fpl. Generally quadruple-check my team before deadline. Sometimes in the dead of night before Saturday.

Well, lots of stupid purchases and sales over the years but i do remember once using my FT after the games on a Saturday for a player playing on the Sunday and thinking I'd get his points.

Another time I used my WC trying to gain transfer value but didn't realise the players had to rise twice for it to be worthwhile. I think I actually lost value.

Worst thing is, on both occasions, I thought I was being really clever...

Don't panic. 69 points is very doable. Look for differentials - teams with low owner percentages that your rival doesn't have. How keen would you say your rival was? If he's what FFS nerds would call a 'casual player' who is very much into just looking at the leading points scorers, you should be able to sneak up on him with a bit of research. 🙂 Don't lose faith! I made up around 100 points from about this time last year to miss out by 1 point on the final day.

That's doable, I'd advice to stay calm and try not to worry too much about what your opponent is doing yet. Too early for that. Play your own game for now, if you gamble too much with differentials and captains you're just gonna end up increasing the gap.

Any reason why Adebayor's statistics at home and away from home are so drastically different? All his goals and most of his chances have come away from home. Granted it's a small sample size but i'm just curious.. does his role change in an away game? i only caught his last home game.

As i mentioned a little earlier, i have been completely out of the loop so any advise on this wildcard team would be great!

    Mannone Mcgregor

Coleman Koscielny Azpilicueta(or Kolarov) Gabbidon Chester

    Hazard Ozil Cabaye Lallana Ki

    Suarez Aguero Sturridge

What do ye make of that? Full budget used..

This side looks decent though. Maybe a bit template but its template for a reason..

With Hull's fixtures being what they are (IMO terrible), I wouldn't be comfortable doubling on their defense. I'd want a Southampton player for sure. Switching keepers to Boruc + Davis will allow you to keep the rest of your team structure as you're short on cash. You could also downgrade Azp or Kos to a Southampton defender and upgrade Chester to Sunderland or something similar.

Other than that I like it. Ozil over Silva could be good stuff.

I think Boruc/Davis is a better bet than Mannone/McGregor, but personally I'd rather have Chester than a Sunderland defender long term, fixtures aren't that bad for me, and think they're a solid side.

Another topic - what FFS trends drive you up the wall?

    Glorifying in injuries?
Asking to advice then getting shirty about the advice people give?
My personal bugbear: fans getting all angsty when criticisms made from a fantasy perspective of the team they support e.g. 'Maybe Arsenal's defence won't keep as many clean sheets due to fixtures and fact they often collapse in Feb when challenging for the title' leads to hundreds of Arsenal fans demanding withdrawal of the comment.

Negredo's not so nailed on once Aguero returns based on Dzeko's performances and Jovetic now fit. I thought he was quite poor v Newcastle, truly is a home striker. Yaya's form is dipping and he!s picking up niggly injuries. With C1, Cup and CL I'm expecting rotation.

Was still monitoring Hazard, can he do it against a decent team I naively wondered. He did, against Pool 🙁

        Sturridge is sharp, he's rested.

Cardiff game is a big point, you're right, but City will beat most. I expect Sturridge and Hazard to outpoint Yaya and Negredo until end of season. Plus I can!t afford them tomorrow 😉

                No. -4.

Aguero, Yaya if he keeps his form are the only value for money there. Bith if them can be rotated this side of the Bayern games, Pelligrini used to refer to those games in when talking about Aguero's fitness. If he sneezes he'll take him off before that game.

Yaya makes them tick though. Silva is the stylish footballer but Yaya knits them front to back and his frees are great FF wise. With C1 final secured it!s one less worry but Cup replay, CL and PL to fight for.

Defensively City players are a waste of money. Kolarov, if he was nailed-on might be the other value pick, possibly Zabaleta.

Teams are wiser to City attack by now. Hopefully many will look at their C1 v Hammers as a barometer rather than an outlier. I expect their goal tally to drop, even with Aguero back as many will see how the likes of Palace keep them at bay.

I don't hear anyone blaming Gouf. for that disallowed goal yesterday. Why he remained rooted to the spot when everyone else was getting onside is beyond me. Total lack of awareness I'd expect from a pro.

So the Sky Sports expert interprets it as a legit goal but I disagree. It was unclear if Gouf had actually touched the ball as he had to dance out of the way and was a hindrance to the G/K in that position. Contentious but hope Gouf learned something there.

It all comes down to the interpretation of interfering with play.

If the player is in an offside position within the six yard box and has to duck out of the way of the ball in order for it to go in the net, I think there is an argument to say that the player was interfering with play whilst being in an offside position.

Just last summer UEFA clarified offside interpretation instructions for and it has been clarified sufficiently that just to be there and hypothetically being able to touch the ball is not interfering. You have to actually positively interfere with either the ball or with some defending player. As Gouffran did neither block Hart's vision nor prevent him from moving for the ball, nor did he touch him anyway nor even move towards the ball, he did not interfere. It is a matter of interpretation, but there are instructions good enough that tell that it should be uniformly interpreted in a way that this was not an offside foul.

Actually, he did move towards the ball and ducked out of the way of it.

UEFA does not set the rules of the game, neither does it have any jurisdiction in the officiating of PL games.

If you are standing in an offside position you cannot do anything to affect the game, including moving out of the way of the ball. If Gouf just stood there, it would have hit him.

Imagine a free kick scenario with an attacking player on the goal line. The free-kick taker aims the shot at the player and the player on the line ducks out of the way. If he is in an offside position, then that should be given as offside.

Which is a goal, unless he somehow prevented the GK from saving it. The rules are decided by FIFA and they should be applied universally. PL does not, to my knowledge, have different offside rule. You prove me that FA has its own laws or instructions where it is said that you cannot move out of the way of the ball when in offside position, and I accept it, but if you cannot then you'd better accept that you are very simply wrong - most likely because you are not familiar with the rules.

It is made very clear that offside foul is not committed by just any action in offside position. You have to do one of the following:

                  1) touch the ball
                  2) prevent opponent from playing the ball
                  3) clearly block GK's line of vision
                  4) challenge for the ball

As long as you do none of these, it is not a foul. Gouffran did none. No matter how much you feel or like to feel that he interfered, he did not interfere in the sense meant by the laws of the game and their instructions of interpretation.

I didn't say PL has a different offside rule. You referred to UEFA guidance and I made the observation above.

I am familiar with the rules thank you, I am a qualified referee and aced the exams.

I have no ulterior motive for feeling a particular way about this incident. If anything, I wanted it to be goal because my rival and cup opponent both have a City defender.

You are very forceful in your views and I am not going just "accept I am wrong" on your insistence.

Ducking out of the way of the ball, whilst in an offside position, in the knowledge that by doing so a goal would be scored, is interfering with play IMO. The act is deceiving because if he did not do it, the ball would have simply hit him.

So, which is it (i.e. ducking out of the way of the ball) then:

                      1) touch the ball
                      2) prevent opponent from playing the ball
                      3) clearly block GK's line of vision
                      4) challenge for the ball

To anybody in his senses, it is, in itself, none of them. Definitely it is not challenging for the ball. So, by the clarification of the laws for this season, it is not an offside foul.

We could also add that Gouffran did not definitely know that it would be a goal if he dodges the ball. He just dodged it. But according to the rules and instructions of interpretation, it would have been a goal even if he knew.

Let me add, finally, that I have no "ulterior motive" here either. I had neither money nor feelings involved.

It is quite simply that although it is in referee's discretion whether he judges the player to have committed an offside foul or not, he does not have free discretion on actual interpretation of laws and can thus make a wrong decision. It is well confirmed what is an interference, and unless you can provide me different FA instructions for referee, it is irrelevant that this was in premier league and not, for example, in champions league. To my knowledge, FA uses the precise same laws and instructions for offside rulings.

It is one thing that the referee decides according to what it seems to him. Even he should, however, follow rules and reason. But what is annoying is that fans who have the privilege of video replay, think these are de jure decided simply by whether something feels like interfering, or intentional in some other cases. What is interference, is well defined and not to be, de jure, decided by referee's personal views.

The offside rule itself clearly states that interfering with an opponent can be a movement that deceives or distracts an opponent.

This link states that if an attacking player remains STATIONARY between the goal posts than a goal should be awarded.

The player in the incident we are talking about did not remain stationary. He had to duck the shot in order for a goal to be scored. This act is deceiving because the ball would have otherwise hit the attacking player.

However, if the ball was goal bound and the attacking player remained stationary, then it is a valid goal (providing it actually goes in and does not hit the player).

Definitely didn't touch the ball, nor block GK's vision, nor prevent him from diving for that ball. Definitely not an offside foul. Just to stand in an offside position in the general direction of the shot does not make an offside foul.

The goal was, in terms of this offside discussion, identical to this goal by Chiriches against Fulham:

      http://www.soccer-blogger.com/2013/12/04/fulham-vs-tottenham-1-2-2013-highlights-dejagah-chiriches-holtby-goal-video/

The 1-1 goal, where Defoe, in offside position, jumped over the ball not to interfere with the game. This serves unsurprisingly well to back up the claims that if it was a big team scoring against a small one the goal would have been allowed. As here it was.

One more time, not an offside foul, because:

"An attacker in an offside position (A) is not obstructing the goalkeeper’s line
of vision or making a gesture or movement which deceives or distracts him."

From the interpretation of the laws of the game. Gouffran did not in any way move to play the ball, let alone in a way that would have somehow prevented Hart from playing it: he dodged the ball.

I think his dance out of the way distracted Hart out of making a committed dive. So he made a gesture of sorts.

Well, it does not say that "dancing to avoid the ball", it says "challenge for the ball" and he definitely did not challenge Hart for the ball. This is not a question of whether Hart was distracted, because that depends solely on Hart who can be as distracted as he pleases. It is well defined what accounts for an offside foul and nowhere does it state that moving away from ball could be counted as distraction even if it looks like dancing to someone (I wonder how does it, really, he just freaking dodges it, that's it). He would have to move towards the ball, basically to challenge Hart for it. No people who has understanding of these words can claim he did.

I have to correct myself, by the way, that this wording is even old. It has been clarified by removing words on "distracting" that are unclear and reads now "An attacker in an offside position (A) is not obstructing the goalkeeper’s line of vision or challenging an opponent for the ball." I forgot that they changed the wording too, only remembered the clarification about what was meant by them.

Closest to borderline case I can think of must be Deaux's goal against Rennes earlier this season:

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQCPWEmf9gw

But this, too, is a valid goal by current rules. Seriously.

Anyone have a clue why Nastasic wasn't even on the bench against Newcastle? Had planned on getting him in with my WC but now I really don't know what to do. Have Kolarov for the time being but I don't think he's as nailed on, plus I could do with the extra 0.2.

I think Brown, although be wary that Poyet has almost finished buying a new centre-back, a guy who he's been trying to buy since he was at Brighton. So either Brown or O'Shea would make way for him, I'd expect.
