Sergio Aguero emerges from the bench to grab a goal and assist in Cityโ€™s win over Cardiff. Santi Cazorla bags a brace against Fulham, Yohan Cabaye strikes twice as Newcastle win at West Ham, Adam Johnson helps Sunderland scramble a point at home to Southampton, whilst Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard grab the goals as Liverpool are held at home by Villa.

Aguero Shows His Class
Utilised as a sub midway through the second-half of yesterdayโ€™s home clash with Cardiff, the Argentine still found time to end the afternoon as Cityโ€™s highest scoring forward. After recovering from a calf complaint to feature in the midweek FA Cup win over Blackburn, Aguero vindicated the decision of the 201,000 Fantasy managers who snapped up his services by bagging a goal and assist in the 4-2 triumph. Furthermore, it arrived on a day where Alvaro Negredoโ€™s scoring streak at the Etihad came to an end โ€“ the Spaniard had netted in each of the last six home games but was sacrificed just after the hour mark as Edin Dzeko was given the full 90 minutes instead. Having risen 0.2 last week, Aguero looks set to increase by 0.3 before City roll up to White Hart Lane a week on Wednesday โ€“ Fantasy managers with little cash to spare may need to reassess their plans before the Argentineโ€™s price spirals beyond their budgetary means.

Toure at the Midfield Summit
The Ivorian was transferred out by over 88,000 Fantasy managers last week after he missed the cup win over Blackburn due to a back problem. Immediately reinstalled to the City starting XI, Toure plundered the points yet again as a goal and assist continued his outstanding consistency under Pellegrini โ€“ he has now produced attacking returns in 13 of 21 appearances this term and, impressively, has only stuttered to back-to-back blanks once. Yesterdayโ€™s display helped Toure up to 136 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game โ€“ three ahead of Eden Hazard at the top of the midfield standings and second only to Luis Suarez overall.

Johnson Sparks Sunderland Revival
The Black Cats wide-man continued the form that saw him tear apart the Fulham defence in the previous Gameweek. With Sunderland 2-0 down midway through the first period, Johnson proved the catalyst for a comeback that helped salvage a draw against Southampton by grabbing a goal and assist in yesterdayโ€™s lunchtime opener. Having also secured the maximum bonus, he has now returned 36 points in the last two matches โ€“ with Stoke and Hull paying visit to the Stadium of Light in the next three Gameweeks, interest in the 6.4-priced midfielder looks set to intensify as he becomes increasingly crucial to the Wearsidersโ€™ battle to beat the drop.

Injury Concerns for Saints
Mauricio Pochettino watched Jay Rodriguez end a three-match scoring drought at the Stadium of Light yesterday. The former Burnley man overtook Cityโ€™s Alvaro Negredo in the FPL forward standings after notching his ninth league goal of the season but the 2-2 draw came at a price after team-mates Dejan Lovren and Gaston Ramirez were both stretchered off. Post-match, their manager revealed he is “quite worried” after the duo were taken to hospital for assessment.

Cabaye at the Double
The Newcastle midfielder helped his side end a run of three straight losses by scoring twice in a 3-1 win at Upton Park. Thereโ€™s no question Cabaye is a different proposition altogether this season since Alan Pardew moved him to the role in โ€œthe holeโ€ behind Loic Remy in a 4-2-3-1. Yesterdayโ€™s double means he has now scored seven for the season, better than his best ever tally in the Premier League with 16 games to go. Coming in at 7.1, he has now scored or assisted in 10 of 17 starts and, with Norwich, Sunderland Villa in the next five, heโ€™s likely to have earned himself a place in many a winter wildcard midfield after serving up his highest haul of the season.

Cazorla Brace Keeps Ozil in the Shade
The Spaniard finally delivered the Fantasy returns his recent displays have been hinting at. Prior to yesterdayโ€™s home clash with Fulham, Cazorla had been a bitter disappointment, producing a single goal and two assists in 15 league appearances โ€“ his two goal-haul against the Cottagers kept Arsenal at the summit and served a reminder of his differential potential. Priced at 9.5 in FPL, Cazorla is cheaper than Mesut Ozil (10.1) and currently sits in just 2.5% of Fantasy teams, though with Aaron Ramsey expected back in time for the next Gameweek, he is likely to be overlooked once again. Ozilโ€™s owners will be concerned by his recent form โ€“ the German has now drawn blanks over each of his last four and has now played a part in just one of the last 10 goals his side have scored when he has been on the pitch.

Palace Backline Helped Pulis Defeat Potters
A solitary Jason Puncheon effort was enough for the Eagles boss to get one over his former employers as his new side climbed out of the drop-zone. The 1-0 win over Stoke continued Palaceโ€™s run of resilient displays at Selhurst Park since Ian Hollowayโ€™s departure โ€“ itโ€™s four clean sheets in six in front of their own supporters now, with the likes of Joel Ward and Danny Gabbidon continuing to offer outstanding value at home. With Hull and West Brom the next two visitors, further defensive returns look on the cards.

Chester Worry for Tigers
The 4.0-priced Hull centre-half has proven a popular pick around these parts but his early withdrawal during yesterdayโ€™s defeat at Norwich will have Fantasy managers worried. Chester lasted just 15 minutes of the 1-0 loss before being replaced by Maynor Figueroa in the Tigersโ€™ back-three โ€“ย early reports suggest he has picked up another hamstring problem. His owners will be sweating on the prognosis, given that he missed eight Gameweeks earlier in the season with a similar complaint.

Benteke on the Up
Having ended his long scoring drought against Arsenal last Monday evening, the Belgian continued his return to form by grabbing the second of Villaโ€™s goals at Anfield. Bentekeโ€™s pair of strikes over the last week was the first time since his double Gameweek 1 that he has netted in back-to-back league matches and a sign, potentially, that he is set to offer us a legitimate option for our three-man frontlines. With three favourable home games in the next six (WBA, WHM, NOR) supplemented by trips to Cardiff and Newcastle, the 8.7-priced Villa striker certainly has the schedule to bolster his chances of further attacking returns.

Gerrard and Sturridge in the Goals as Suarez Draws Rare Anfield Blank
The Uruguayan failed to score in a home game for the first time this term and delivered just an assist as Brendan Rodgers switched formations to accommodate Daniel Sturridge. The Reds boss started the game with a 4-4-2 before switching to 4-3-3 as his side struggled to match the midlands outfit in the centre of the park. Sturridgeโ€™s strike was his eleventh set of attacking returns in 14 appearances, whilst Gerrard once again delivered the goods for the Merseysiders. Owned by a mere 7% of FPL sides, the Redsโ€™ skipper slotted home a converted spot-kick to take his recent run to 11 sets of returns in his last 12 starts โ€“ like Toure, he may not be the โ€œflairโ€ option but is providing a consistency that few midfielders are able to approach.

    Morning Gents.

I think it's coming to the point this season where many players are getting pretty much essential in teams to keep the pace with the l points.

The remaining half of or so of your squad left may just need to be your differentials to chip away at overall ranks, Mini leagues etc.

Here's my list of 'must haves'...

    2 Defenders.

    1 from...

Arsenal. One of Mertescaker or Kos. Mert is obviously more of a goal threat but for me I would (and have) gone Kos - similar bap return but you do save a few bucks to invest elsewhere.

Everton. One from Coleman / Baines. If you have had Coleman from day 1 (or close to) then he's a no brainer, but Baines could prove to be a little differential to him if you can pay the premium.
    -

    2 Midfielders.

Hazard. He just seems the best Chelsea pick with no clear striker and he seems to have turned show ponying now into points under Jose.

Yaya. This pains me, but his points return are without question. Silva as plan B.
    -

    Forward.

    Suarez - of course.

Aguero - I've just taken a hit to get him in, with City raining goals under Pelle I think the sooner you get him the better as if you leave it to late you won't afford him.

I actually think I have just stated the obvious and... Your other starting 5 players are up for debate

What's your thoughts guys, do you see any other ESSENTIALS at this stage or disagree with the 6 above ?

I have Kos, Hazard, Aguero and Suarez from the list, but I don't think anyone is essential. Those players have scored well, but they could easily be bad options in 3 weeks time. Hazard may struggle being a marked man, Yaya could slow down, Man City could start scoring a few less and with their spread Aguero might be value at 12m. Arsenal could start conceding here and there. If never had Yaya and I'm doing okay.

The purchase of Koscielny from a very early stage has been one of the few bright sparks of my distinctly average season. Not getting Coleman early enough sapped a lot of the funds in my WC. I'd say both of those are essential.

Same with Hazard & Yaya - the latter will come in for me after Ozil's game with Palace. It'll be interesting if Ramsey can recapture his essential status after his return from injury (Arsenal midfield cover looks essential too).

Aguero (a positive in my WC) & Suarez yes too. The third striker slot is an interesting conundrum - should have gone Rodriguez, instead of Hooper...but time to retrieve the sitaution.

I think for anyone trying to mount a mini league comeback, then Baines is one of the stronger bets to help. He has been out for a while, and has the potential to rack up a nice haul quickly, even if you have Coleman already....

I would never say a defender, purely for CSs, is essential. No explosion potential. Coleman is like a midfielder so I agree with him, but there is an argument for going cheap at the back to maximise your front 8, making the 4pts from an Arsenal defender redundant.

I'm with you all the way on this.

I think people get a but misguided in their thinking for example I can't get Yaya I'm chasing their rival has Yaya so they go Silva and Yaya kills it - go figure.

I think the game your playing is a snapshot of the pinnacle of the entire game and that up around the top 1k mark.

Up there its essential to playing the percentages.

For example the top 1k post giving breakdown of players gave us a fair indication that if certain players like Terry Mertesacker Lallana hit the rank would take a hammering.

Coleman and Suarez are nearly write off as they were in every team.

          Koscielny
          Coleman
          Yaya
          Hazard
          Aguero
          Suarez

And then I suppose Silvas my differential.

I now have all six of your essentials, plus two of your alternatives as well (I don't mind doubling up sometimes). But I don't think we should be called Casuals just because we are not as Maverick as some.

      Morning Evs, nice post.

Hard to disagree with those picks and yeah, tough to see an 'essential' pick from ManU. Januzaj is a good pick as a fifth mid, but by no means essential.

I also don't see any Spurs players as essentials, that's where we might see some differentials emerging in the second half of the season. Would love to see Lamela get some games for example.

I think Sagna is just as good as Koscielny in FPL terms, and Silva's not a bad alternative for Hazard. I expect some on the list may underperform in the second half of the season (imagining a scenario where Suarez gets injured or bites someone).

This anti Yaya sentiment could easily spread into next season. He will be 10m+ and people will still consider that too expensive from GW1. It could result in one of the longest stubborn streaks for certain 'serious' FPL players.

Could Ozil's drop in form be down to Ramsey's absence? Ozil, Giroud and Ramsey had great chemistry together and were nearly always in the points in one combination or another. Wilshere and Cazorla haven't quite clicked with Ozil it seems and Giroud has also suffered a downturn in form. Just thinking aloud!

    Morning all,

This is how my team looks at the moment:

    Mannone
    Koscielny, Ward, Coleman
    Silva, Eriksen, Özil, Hazard
    JayRod, Aguero, Suarez

    subs: Marshall, Puncheon, Clyne, Chester
    1 FT, 0.3 ITB

Any ideas what to do with this lot?

Stick. Puncheon in against Hull and chance JRod on the bench?

Cheers. Playing Puncheon over JRod could be good call. I had also an idea to downgrade Silva/Özil and upgrade JayRod but not sure if its worth it.

Had 2 FT and already done Ozil & Giroud -> Kebab and Kun last night

was absolutely on the edge with budgets and couldn't wait , hoping will survive the Fa Cup w/o any injuries

Honestly. Did Ozil & Giroud > Kun & Johnson myself and petrified. Always done my transfers late this season. Fingers crossed tho

Negredo was at 97.5% for a price rise yesterday.

It would have meant an extra 0.1m in my selling price.

But then he blanked, got booked & subbed off for Aguero on 62 minutes.

Now he is at 31% ๐Ÿ™
