Scout Scribbles – City Off to Wembley

Alvaro Negredo bags a brace and Sergio Aguero finds the net yet again as City reach the Capital One Cup Final. Andy Carroll is handed his first start for West Ham after recovering from a heel injury. Nicolas Anelka is charged by the FA. Sunderland sign goalkeeper Oscar Ustari. Lucas could be out for two months, Roberto Martinez is expecting more news on Seamus Coleman today, whilst James Chester and Dejan Lovren are set for spells on the sidelines:

City Cruise Into Final

Despite rolling up to Upton Park with a 6-0 first leg semi-final advantage, Manuel Pellegrini still opted to start with Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo up top against the Hammers. In a match that also saw Jack Rodwell and Stevan Jovetic return from injury, Negredo was one of just three players to retain their starting berths from the weekend game against Cardiff (along with Jesus Navas and Javi Garcia) and bagged a brace in the 3-0 win, whilst Aguero produced a goal and assist to score for the sixth successive appearance in all competitions. Negredo required treatment on a shoulder problem during the match and, although he finished the full 90 minutes, his manager discussed the Spaniard, and his flourishing forward options, post-match:

“I think that for Kun this match was very useful. He played nearly 60 minutes when he was playing just 20 or 30 minutes in the games before, so it will be for him very useful for the future. Negredo is in a very good moment. So, I think that now with Dzeko and the return of Jovetic, we are now covered for the next match. He [Negredo] has some problem with his shoulder, but we will see tomorrow if it is serious or not but for the moment he has pain, but we don’t know what kind of pain it is.”

The Scout Says: Bearing in mind he went on to finish the match without further incident, Negredo’s owners won’t be overly concerned by his manager’s statement. By the looks of it, Dzeko and Jovetic will start the weekend FA Cup clash against Watford, allowing Negredo and Aguero to remain fresh for the midweek trip to in-form Tottenham. David Silva and Yaya Toure owners will be delighted by their rests last night, whilst Pellegrini’s decision to alternate his entire back-four once again indicates he now has a definite first-choice defence. There is, of course, fixture fall-out as a result of their cup progress As we mentioned in last night’s article, the Manchester derby, originally set to take place in Gameweek 28, will now need to be rescheduled as City are set to play the Capital One Cup that weekend. We’ll keep you up to date when we know more.

Mixed Injury News for Hammers

Sam Allardyce handed Andy Carroll his first start since returning from injury last night as the big target man’s comeback continues. Carroll played the first 45 minutes of the 3-0 defeat before making way, whilst both Kevin Nolan and James Tomkins returned after recent suspensions. The Hammers boss watched on as both Joe Cole and Mo Diame picked up injuries – the latter was stretchered off with a knee problem – but admitted after the game that, whilst he now faces an anxious wait on their availability, he is expecting a trio of players to feature in a friendly later this week as they edge towards a return in time for next Wednesday’s trip to Stamford Bridge:

“Obviously we were disappointed to lose Joe Cole and Mo Diame to injuries, but we’ll have to see how serious they are. I spoke to Mo afterwards and it seems it might not have been as serious as it first looked…Guy Demel and Joey O’Brien should be back and both will play in the behind-closed-doors game, as should Ricardo Vaz Te.”

The Scout Says: Whilst Carroll’s first start and Demel’s likely return bode well for the Hammers survival prospects, the upcoming visit to Chelsea will keep them from our Fantasy thoughts. Following the clash with Jose Mourinho’ men, though, Allardyce’s side then have four very favourable home games in six (SWA, NOR, SOU, HUL) to bring them onto our radars. With a trip to Villa also during that run, Carroll and co could hardly have a kinder schedule to pick up the points and finally haul themselves out of the drop zone.

Anelka Slapped with FA Charge

The West Brom forward was charged by the FA for the gesture made during the December 28 clash with West Ham. Anelka has received a 34-page document explaining the allegations and has until 6pm tomorrow to respond – reports suggest the serious nature of the incident means the Frenchman is facing a minimum five-match ban if found guilty.

The Scout Says: If Anelka is indeed sidelined, new Baggies boss Pepe Mel has plenty to ponder up top. Mel rolled out a 4-4-2 formation in his first match in charge and partnered Anelka with Matej Vydra in the front two in Monday’s draw against Everton. Given that Shane Long departed to Hull just last week, Mel could turn to Victor Anichebe or Saido Berahino if he chooses to retain the same formation and, with Villa, Palace, Fulham and Sunderland in the next six, the Baggies may offer us a budget third forward option if the new man in charge can produce the points and steer them to safety.

Sunderland Sign New Stopper

Gus Poyet made his third defensive signing of the winter transfer window yesterday afternoon by snapping up keeper Oscar Ustari. The 27-year-old makes his way to Wearside until the end of the season as the Black Cats boss looks for cover in light of Kieran Westwood’s ongoing shoulder problem.

The Scout Says: Having started each of the last 12 league matches, Vito Mannone has picked up plenty of Fantasy interest and now resides in over 7% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams. Still favourably priced at 4.4, the Italian’s impressive displays between the posts look likely to keep him as the Wearsiders’ number one keeper, with Ustari providing experienced back-up for the Black Cats. The situation needs monitoring, though – with seven of the remaining eight home games offering appeal (STO, SUL, WBA, CPL, WHM, CAR, SWA), investment in Sunderland’s defence is understandably set to rise, with Phil Bardsley’s (4.5) goal potential offering an alternative route amongst Poyet’s regulars.

Lucas Concerns Grow for Reds

Reports in yesterday’s press suggest the Liverpool midfielder could be sidelined for two months with a knee injury. After being introduced as a half-time sub against Villa last weekend, Lucas lasted just 21 minutes before he was forced off with the injury and left Anfield on crutches later that evening amid concerns over ligament damage.

The Scout Says: A potential spell on the sidelines for the Brazilian may see Brendan Rodgers reassess his central midfield options. Lucas was dropped to the bench last weekend as the Reds boss opted for a 4-4-2 in order to accommodate Daniel Sturridge up front but it was perhaps telling that Rodgers called on the South American at the break and return to a 4-3-3. With Lucas out, though, Rodgers may opt to use Jordan Henderson centrally again, bringing Joe Allen into the equation, with Sturridge and one of Philippe Coutinho or Raheem Sterling handed the flank roles on either side of Luis Suarez.

Martinez Expecting Coleman Update Today

The Everton boss discussed the injury which forced Seamus Coleman off in Monday night’s draw at West Brom yesterday. In an interview with the club’s official website, Martinez also rolled out an update on Steven Pienaar, who missed out against the Baggies:

“The next 24 hours are going to be vital to find out how he feels and the extent of the injury. Seamus is a really fit boy, so when he has that feeling that something is wrong with his hamstring, we need to take that seriously….Steven had to come off in the last home game and since then he has been working really hard to get back to full fitness. He was a little bit short of that on Monday and we’ll assess him over the next few days. It’s too early to tell but it shouldn’t be too big of a problem.”

The Scout Says: Given that he’s the most popular defender in the FPL game by some distance (45% ownership), Coleman’s availability will have a significant say in how Fantasy managers assess the upcoming Gameweek. The Toffees face a trip to Liverpool next Tuesday and also roll up to Spurs and Chelsea in the next five, with many Coleman owners set to reassess their options should he be ruled out by Martinez. Pienaar’s absence allowed Leon Osman to take up the left flank berth against the Baggies, with Bryan Oviedo on the opposite flank and Kevin Mirallas in “the hole” as a result of Ross Barkley’s absence. Certainly, the central role is benefitting the Belgian – he has now notched in each of the last two Gameweeks and is starting to improve his attacking threat at a time where Romelu Lukaku continues to toil up top for the Merseyside outfit.

Michu Nearing Comeback

In an interview with the club’s official website, the Swansea midfielder has revealed he is close to a return to action after undergoing ankle surgery. Reports indicate Michu could be back in time for the Gameweek 25 home game against Cardiff as he attempts to finally put his injuries behind him:

“I am improving a lot. I have started running and although I’m in a little pain, I am happy with my progress. I want to be playing as soon as possible. I am desperate to play because I am happy when I am on the pitch. With this injury, though, you need to be careful and see how the ankle is every day so I don’t want to say ‘I want to be back for this date or game’. If I am going to play, I need to be 100 per cent and not just 60 per cent. I want to be fit and I want to play at my highest level, so we will wait until I am fully fit.”

The Scout Says: In a season that has also been afflicted by knee problems, the Spaniard has played just two of his side’s last 12 league fixtures. The Swans’ heavy schedule has hit Michu harder than most and, with little rest prior to his injury, he has found the net just twice. Providing he can return fully fit and injury free, the 8.5-priced midfielder may well prove a real differential for the run-in as Michael Laudrup looks to his eye for goal to help secure top-flight survival.

Chester Setback for Hull

Reports in the local press suggest the Tigers defender is set for another spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

The Scout Says: Chester limped out of the 1-0 defeat at Norwich with just 15 minutes on the clock last weekend. Scans over the last 24 hours have highlighted the severity of the problem – the second time this term he has sustained the injury, having missed Gameweeks 6-13 with the same complaint. A cut-price favourite on the site, Chester has picked up a couple of clean sheets and also found the net in the nine appearances since returning but his absence looks set to boost the prospects of Alex Bruce or Paul McShane in the back-three, with the latter now back in full training after injury.

Lovren Worry for Saints

The Southampton centre-half could be set for a spell on the sidelines after being stretchered off at Sunderland last weekend. Reports in the local press indicate Lovren has damaged ligaments and is likely to be out for around four weeks.

The Scout Says: The Croatian has played all but two of his side’s first 22 league matches and notched his second goal of the season at the Stadium of Light. The highest scoring Saints defender in the FPL game, his absence is likely to afford Jos Hooiveld (4.1) or Maya Yoshida (4.0) a slot alongside Jose Fonte in the heart of the back-four and with games against Fulham, Stoke and Hull within the four-week period, the prospects for clean sheets still look appealing.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Gameweek 28 planning

How are you planning for Gameweek 28 when Manchester City and United both miss a game.

Are you prepared to bench your assets from those teams, probably two to three of the following:

    Silva, Aguero, Januzaj, Yaya

    Or will you ditch any.

Are you considering ignoring ManU players?

For me I'm ok ditching Silva if I have to as I don't have much money tied up with him. Aguero has already gone up markedly since I got him last week so I'll stick with him.

I'm hoping Sunderland don't make it as that would really cause me problems.

If it is a City - United final I would just bench my City players for the week, and only draft in United players after that week.

In all likelihood I won't have any Man Utd players so I'll bench the Man City players I have in GW28 then use free transfers to bring in some Man Utd players for the DGW, then wildcard to fix the mess. This all assumes no other blank/DGWs crop up to add further complications of course.

Also, if City get through to the FA cup 6th round, GW29 will also be blank! Lots of big assets on the bench 2 weeks running unless we plan well. If this is the case, I would be tempted to sell the likes of Aguero, who will plummet in price as he won't have a red flag to slow his fall.

I think one approach in this case would be to save transfers and have 2 in the bank for GW28. Then use 2 in GW30 to repair things.

I'm making sure I have a strong bench as there is no way I'll be able to sell Aguero and Toure and then buy them back. I may transfer out Kolorov but he has good fixtures either side so I'll probably have to ride it out.

Looks like just Aguero for me. Easy enough to accomodate. Makes sense to ensure that my desired 1st sub taking his place has a good fixture that week. Other weeks you dont know when you might need your bench, but this week you do, so planning accordingly is important

I have tripled up on City. I am going to bench all three for GW 28. Not at all convinced about United defense. For the DGW i might bring in Rooney or RvP. So total 4 players. Thats it.

The bigger problem is if City have a double blank (GW29) as well. In that case I'll shift all 3 of Aguero, Silva, Kun, ideally by saving a transfer in GW27 then shifting the 3 of them for 4 points. I'd then look to save a transfer again in GW29 then start bring them back.

If its just GW28 they miss I'll probably just sell 1, either Kolarov or Silva depending on the appeal of the replacement and how much value is tied up.

Have no Utd players, GW28 was part of the reason I sold Januzaj on the wildcard. Will look to bring some in for a DGW but since 1 of the fixtures will be against City I'm not convinced a triple up is worth it given their lack of options.

If he does go to Utd (a big if) then I presume Utd will play 4-2-3-1 to accommodate Roo, Mata, Kagawa, or Janu behind Rvp or Wellbeck. They could also bring in Valencia or Young if they wish too change it up a bit 4-4-2

These injuries to popular players are a problem in FPL, but in limited transfer games they can really start to be pivotal in a player's chances for the season and those who have a few transfers more than the average left can close the gap on those above or pull away to ML winning advantages.

This is killing me in the Daily Mail game, which I was top of a few weeks ago. Already transferred out Walcott, Nasri, Rooney and Barkley. Now have Lovren, Coleman and Negredo to deal with. Having to hold players I would otherwise have traded.

Almost a single figure amount of transfers left unfortunately. All captain changes intact. Tactic of transfer rotating a striker captain worked well so far, but may have to abandon that for now.

The Mail won't let on how many people play - I've asked them

They're quite time consuming though. I can't stay on the ball every day with these games and that's my weakness, I prefer the match week format, but with the Mail game I now have to try! (no holidays)

Anyone else quite fancying Navas? He has got decent game time recently, and with Nasri out for another month at least... Stats-wise, I don't see any reason to favour Silva, other than paying more for the nailed-on factor.

I'd also love to own Welbeck for 2-3 weeks, but that might be too much if it looks like RVP and Rooney are getting fit.

really not a navas fan, there are better players for other teams at his budget zone.
sometimes the team influence our decision too much
not sure if it is same this year but in previous years if you looked down the top players squads there was a fair variety of selections from other teams.

home fixtures, he's been incredible. Away, he's not really turned up. Would probably be great to rotate with Januzaj but that is an expensive bench asset.

To people already thinking about all the different possibilities if Mata comes to United.

Mata to Man U is not going to happen. Chelsea and Mou would never allow that. Mata might go on loan to Atl Madrid. That is the extreme.Atleast for this season.

                  LOL.

Do you know that currently Mata has 2.5 years left and is also an absolute steal in terms of wages? An injury to Willian or Oscar will definitely get him more minutes. Chelsea in desperate need of cash to sell a player of his quality?? Don't think so.

United wouldn't sell rooney to united as they were rivals

Why would chelsea sell to united now?

Only possibility is mata on loan. United have already played chelsea twice and have chelsea's rivals to come.

So? He is still a fringe player for Mourinho and can help Mou to win premier league this actual season. Mou is a manager of moment, he doesn't think about the forthcoming years, he thinks of the moment, the on going match, the next match, this season, and that's it. He wants to win now, and think later about winning later again.

He is leaving for sure dude -

                Reasons for Mata:
                * First team football for Mata
                * higher wages at ManUtd
                * World cup spain squad

                Reasons for Chelsea:
                * They need to raise fund
                * They need to get a place for an English player
                * Mata's bad relationship with Mourinho
                * Mata is cup tied in Europe so Chelsea won't mind as they have played both home & away games against United

                Reason for United:
                * They need one marquee signing
                * Mata's wages is not too bad as compare to RVP n Rooney
                * Mata is a utility player who will create chances for RVP n Rooney
                * Mata will perform at his best because he wants to get in Spain squad

Athletico Madrid cannot afford 37m bid.
They are ready to offer 2 players to United in order them to stop approaching Mata so ideally ManUtd is ahead of Athletico Madrid in the chase for Mata.

And I am quite confident Mata won't return to Spain specially with his love to Valencia, he will be reluctant to play with their rivals.

There have been many logic but as we have seen in the past - big money transfers are possible like Ozil , Torres etc. and with Mourinho's relationship with SAF - I can see this one going through too.

£40M for a player who originally cost them about half of that and is having a bad season and not in the first-team plans is great business. With FFP a club like Chelsea, with bad business they have made before, is wise to take a good deal when they have the chance.

I'm thinking something along these lines:

                  Adrian Manonne
Mert Kos Terry (if coleman out) Bruce Parr
                  Hazard Cabaye Silva Eriksen Noone
                  Aguero Suarez Sturridge

For those with Chester / Goalman and possibly another 3rd dodgy defender , a quick refresher on the rules : ( I read them myself )

"if any of your outfield players play 0 minutes in the Gameweek, they will be substituted by the highest priority outfield substitute who played in the Gameweek and doesn't break the formation rules (eg. If your starting team has 3 defenders, a defender can only be replaced by another defender)"

My team really needs some freshening up even after I've played my WC at the start of January but I don't know which transfer has the highest priority.. HELP needed!

                Boruc ( davis)
                Coleman/Mert/Ward ( Chester/Burner)
                Januzaj/Navas/Gerrard/Ozil ( Lallana)
                Negredo/Suarez/Adebayor

Chester is out for 8 weeks so I might replace him but Coleman could also be out but I bought Coleman for 5,8 so I might wait with him if his injury is not too serious. I also really like the prospects of Rooney if he is fit for next weekend with CAR/sto/FUL in the next 3 but Aguero also seems essential.. Ozil is playing poorly lately and has cost me 10m. I have 2m ITB and 1 FT. Which transfer has the highest priority guys and why? All help is greatly appreciated!

What's the situation with Hudson/Burner? Don't feel 5.2 is worth paying for a Cardiff defender, so Caulker is pretty much ruled out.

I'd guess Burner is more likely to keep his spot, but no one knows which is nailed on or whether either will be at any point this season. I'd steer clear myself, unless you wanted to pay 4.5 for T-C.

I think Burner will generally be nailed; the local press don't seem to have reacted well to Hudson getting a game, and he didn't do himself many favours.

That said, Cardiff's defence is best avoided, better budget options with Hull, Palace and Sunderland.

Sagna over Kosc for me. More likely to swing in a cross for the salmon-like Giroud*. Expect Saints to score.

Both depends on who you have coming in.

by salmon-like, i imagine him rising high above the defence only for the ball to slap off his forehead and glance wide by 10 yards - since that is how he rolls now that i settled on him over Ade last week.

Actual statement on Swansea's website, from © Monk, on Chico Flores.

"at no time was I threatened with a brick by anyone"

ha only reason im takin it seriously is cos we have a work league. Also I like the captain change rule keeps you on your toes allows for more points.

I've missed a lot of captain transfers but have promised myself to take it right proper serious next season.

But yes still enjoying it. Despite my position.

My first year not playing it a few 1k ranks over the years , I didn't like the (c) strategy this year , I felt it needed too much maintenance 2/3 Csptains a week , hopefully they will simplify it and I'm back in.

I just looked at it for the first time since August.

Quite interesting: I had Shaw, who I think has been good value, but also RVP, Paulinho and Andy Carroll 🙂 I am unsurprisingly doing less than well.

I've fixed my team now but I just can't be bothered with the captain changing lark, I barely understand it. That's why I stopped playing before the season even started.

And there's surely no chance of winning anything without being right on top of it.

Thanks man. So can you explain the captaincy changes to me? Use this week as an example.

example this week my captain was suarez, who played on saturday. I could have changed my captain to a player who played on sunday or monday. So I had Lukaku for instance playing on monday. I did not change because I would have had to go into next week with Lukaku captain also. I figured he wouldnt do much and was better staying on suarez so i have him captain at home to everton, which worked out quite well.

Now next week after suarez has played I can change to any of my players playing on wednesday. But you have to bear in mind there following week fixtures too as you only get one change a week.

                                  Did that make any sense?

OK. So this week I could be captaining Cabaye and then changing to Aguero?

As it happens, I've already changed it from Hazard to Aguero (Hazard was captain from start of season) so I can't do that, right? But next week I could apply the principle if there's someone playing the next day who I'd be happy captaining for the following week. Sounds heavy going but maybe I can manage it.

Yes correct. Yep so you have already changed captain so you you will have aguero for wednsday. unlcuky thing about that is aguero plays on monday so you will have to stick with him for chelsea or change to a player playing on wkend. had you known this before you could have changed to a player playng on sat or sun then changed to kun on monday. unlucky lol/

There are pictures of Alvaro Negredo arriving at City's training ground this morning in a sling after injuring his shoulder last night.

Doesn't sound great but then again, a week is a long time and he wouldn't be turning up to training if it were serious.

Hmm I imagine he'd turn up for medical treatment no matter how bad it was. Not great news, may have to pull the trigger and get Sturridge in. Or just let him be benched.

Would treatment be at the training ground? I always figured they'd have a separate medical facility.
