Once again, there’s plenty for Fantasy managers to ponder as we head towards next Tuesday’s deadline. Here are the scenarios and line-ups we’re keeping an eye on this time around:

Mirallas’ Form in the Middle
Since moving to the role in “the hole”, the Belgian’s attacking potential has taken a turn for the better. With Ross Barkley stuck in the Toffees treatment room with a toe injury, Mirallas has notched in back-to-back league games for the first time this term and is finally beginning to justify our show of pre-season faith ahead of the Merseyside derby at Anfield . Owners of the misfiring Romelu Lukaku are looking for a way out in order to free up a space in our three-man frontlines but, with Villa, Palace and West Ham rolling up to Goodison in three of the subsequent five, investment in the Toffees’ attack still looks a viable tactic. If Mirallas impresses against Liverpool, he may find himself subject to increased investment as a midfield option, allowing Lukaku owners to jump ship.

Vertonghen’s Impact on the Spurs Back-Four
Having trained with the Tottenham first-team all week, the Belgian played 60 minutes of a behind-closed-doors friendly and is set to return to action for Wednesday’s home clash with City. Whilst a clean sheet isn’t expected, Vertonghen’s comeback is at least likely to indicate the central defensive pecking order under Tim Sherwood – Vlad Chiriches and Michael Dawson have played every minute in the heart of the back-four since the departure of Andre Villas-Boas but one of the pair are set to drop out as Vertonghen reclaims his starting berth. With Younes Kaboul, Sandro and Paulinho also back in action on Thursday, we may get a better gauge of Sherwood’s preferred first-team next midweek.

Johnson’s Right-Back Replacement
Ruled out “indefinitely” by Brendan Rodgers after struggling to overcome a series of injuries, the defender’s absence opens the door for a cut-price option at Liverpool. Granted, the Reds have hardly been the most resilient side but, with Kolo Toure lacking the mobility required to be utilised efficiently at full-back, fit-again Jon Flanagan (4.3) and Martin Kelly (4.1) are set to battle it out for a regular role in Johnson’s absence and hand Fantasy managers another budget regular.

Sturridge’s Role for the Reds
Daniel Sturridge’s return to the Liverpool starting line-up saw Brendan Rodgers change formation in order to accommodate the fit-again forward last weekend. Liverpool started with a 4-4-2 against Villa but, after being outplayed in the middle of the park in the first 45 minutes, the Reds boss switched to a 4-3-3 to wrestle back control of the game. If Rodgers continues with a lone forward system, Sturridge may find himself out on the flank against Everton instead of alongside Luis Suarez through the centre – such a scenario may see some reassess his acquisition, with plenty of forward alternatives stepping up right now.

Mata’s Impact on the United XI
With Jose Mourinho confirming Juan Mata is set for a medical at United earlier this lunchtime, the Spaniard’s imminent arrival at Old Trafford will hand Fantasy managers an immediate chance to freshen up their five-man midfields. Initially, though, injuries may determine where Mata is utilised – if Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are still absent for the visit of Cardiff, the new boy is likely to be handed the role in “the hole” behind Danny Welbeck, thus affecting Adnan Januzaj’s position within David Moyes’ starting XI. Given that the teenager has started seven of the last eight, Moyes may even look to ease the pressure for risk of burn-out, thus potentially depriving us of a budget midfield option, with the Spaniard tasked with providing the creativity instead.

Jose’s Teamsheet
Mata’s expected departure and Fernando Torres’s knee injury has resulted in increased Fantasy interest in Willian and Samuel Eto’o over the last few days. Willian has now started six of the last eight and, while the arrival of Mohamed Salah ensures the competition for places on the flanks remains just as intense, the 7.5-priced (0.4% owned) Brazilian’s recent displays suggest he remains in the driving seat. Eto’o’s hat-trick against United also brings him onto our radars at a time when that third forward slot looks more crucial than ever. Certainly, his chances of another start look good, bearing in mind Demba Ba has started just twice all season for the Blues – if he gets the nod against West Ham next Wednesday, his 1% ownership could also make the 8.2-priced Cameroon international the ultimate of differentials.

Ozil and Giroud against the Saints
Subject to substantial sales over the last few days, both may be on their last chance for many a Fantasy manager. With a single assist in five, Ozil has been sold on by over 55,000 Fantasy Premier League managers – more than any midfielder – with team-mates Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla offering in-form alternatives amongst Arsene Wenger’s side. Giroud, meanwhile, is third most unpopular forward this week, with over 36,000 parting company in light of a record which has seen him score in just four of his last 16 league appearances. The duo’s prospects are boosted by the news that Dejan Lovren is out for Southampton at St Mary’s – many may choose to hold as a result of the Croatian’s absence, but if the Gunners duo blank again, the exodus may pick up pace.

Chester’s Defensive Replacement
A cut-price favourite around these parts, the Hull centre-half is sidelined for “at least six weeks” after limping out of last week’s loss at Norwich with his second hamstring injury of the season. Fantasy managers still holding winter wildcards may look for a cheap alternative route into Hull’s backline ahead of a kind run of matches which sees Steve Bruce’s side travel to Palace, Sunderland, West Ham and Cardiff and play host to Southampton and Newcastle in the next seven Gameweeks. Alex Bruce, with eight starts in the last nine, looks an obvious alternative at 3.9, though the likes of Paul McShane and Abdoulaye Faye (3.9 and 3.8) could come into contention as the Tigers boss looks to his fringe players to step up.

Unless money is a real issue why get a dirt cheap mid as fifth mid? Common view on here is that having a bench dilemma due to a strong front 8 is a problem, but is it?
A player getting 10 points on your bench is no worse than a player getting 0 points on your bench. But what if you need him to come in? I don't see the point of having someone on your bench who if called upon will get you a likely 0-2 points. At this time of year there is a good chance you will need your bench so are you not better getting a sure starter with decent points potential for say £6m, than a rotation risk in a rubbish team for £4.5m?

..but is it better to spend this money on your defence instead? bardsley vs. terry for example. you are not gonna use your 5th mid very often

depending how power ur 5 midfield and forwards are...if u have a lot of mid price budget might as well upgrade to 1 premium and have a better front 7

So I'm considering Snodgrass and Campbell to rotate as my 7th and 8th attackers.

But won't that mean I'm at a disadvantage vs someone with a Sturridge or a Adebayor as their 7th?

This is only one way to look at it

What is the difference between a 4.2m player getting getting 2 points on your bench and a 5.2m player getting 10 in terms of points?

      Nothing

In terms of the rest of your team, the former is obviously better

I just think that with fixture congestion, bad weather and old niggles getting worse, along with new signings the chances of needing your sub increase considerably this time of year.

You have decentish choices for defence at cheaper price, as for a midfielder, I don´t think it´s worth to spend more than 5.0 in a bench warmer for him to come into play in 1 or 2 games.

Exactly my thinking thought about a front 8 of:
      Hazard Silva Cabaye Erikson Lallana
      Suarez Aguero JRod

Could then choose depending on fixtures and would always have a strong option off the bench in case I needed it.

yeah it's just a coincidence that top 3 are close to 7mil & baines at 7.4 mil is the fifth highest scoring def with missing 6 games. btw, baines ppg is 5.7. you can compare to gerrard (5.2) or lallana (4.7) both of whom are more expensive and in more RMWCTs.

you rotate ur defense but u seldom rotate ur midfield...having better 4th and 5th def means that u have better options to choose ur defenders and in the event ur mid is not playing you can always get ur 4th def to play..dun really see the need of a good 5th mid..and what is the chance u have a good 5th mid available at a very cheap price and in that particular game when you need him he will score 10 points..not very likely tbh!

        totally agree
never understood the logic of benching dilema
even with 5 big mids there is usually an obvious one to bench and if they then go on and score points the chances are you wouldn't have had them anyway with a cheaper player. So you are no worse off

Because leaving money on the bench is just plain bad strategy. You want your most expensive assets contributing points every week. And leaving expensive ones on the bench leaves you weak SOMEWHERE (which is where that money should be spent instead).

It's a flawed question tbh. I'm sure in Spain everyone really admires Wenger. If he were to take over Real Madrid every non-Real fan in Spain would probably start to hate him if he did well. Meanwhile everyone in England would probably start professing their admiration for him - just like they did with Mourinho.

Not really. The media hated Mourinho because they didn't like his arrogant attitude, the Barca fans hated him for his teams antics on the pitch, his antics on the sidelines like poking Tito in the eye, a lot of Real Madrid fans even hated him because he turned their club into a joke, ostracised Casillas and was very rude about it. He turned most of Spain against him by his final year, and his position became untenable. There's no two ways about it, his antics in Spain were disgraceful.

Yeah nobody can defend the Tito thing but, as I recall, as soon as he left Chelsea, he was everyone's first choice as England manager, then Liverpool (whose fans professed to hate him the most) wanted him to replace Rafa when he was sacked and then Man U fans wanted him (even more now). The only time they don't like him is when he's Chelsea manager.

And, I'm sorry, but as much as they built him up and then dragged him down (as is the british media way, the UK media LOVED Mourinho, all the more for his attitude. They never got over him leaving. 🙂

Bugger this new hamstring problem for Silva, he's becoming a nuisance to own. I am swallowing my pride and switching to Yaya. Will give me something like:

        Mannone/Adrian
        Koscielny Coleman Kolarov Parr Bruce
        Hazard Yaya Mata Cabaye Noone
        Suarez Agureo Adebayor

Might switch to Bony if I fancy a punt. V template I know, but should bring in the points.

I know. It will hurt. "...Oh but his goal/shot ration is so high, oh but he can't keep on scoring like this blah blah blah..." STFU!

We're now more than halfway through the season and his points keep on rolling in.

The bandwagon now resembles a train during Chinese New Year, but there's still room if you hang off the bloke who is hanging off the back.

        just curious..

What's happening if you already have 3 MUFC players in your team and that you now buy Mata which still is chelsea but will turn into MUFC tomorrow or so.

you will automatically owe 4 MUFC players which should bug your FPL?

Anybody replacing Chester or thinking of going with a Hull defender, should re-think.
Not only is there Faye, McShane & Bruce. Jack Hobbs has been recalled from his loan today. Add in Curtis Davies and Figueroa that's 7 other CBs. I'm staying away now. It's a shame.

I have activated my wc and really need a critical view on my draft so far by someone more experienced than me. Really thankful for all replies! Here we go:

        Boruc Davis
        Azpi Kosc Baines Ward Bruce
        Silva Haz Cabaye AJ Noone
        Aguero Suarez Bony

        🙂

          I prefer a rotating keeper.
          baines is very pricey.
Decent Midfield. Similar to mine but worried about Noone's game time.
Not sold on Bony but a good differencial.

          7/10.

          If it was me I'd

Downgrade Baines - other cheaper Everton available
          Do Azpi to Cahill
Use Baines money to upgrade Bony - think Swans will struggle

Cahill as much rotation risk from Luiz as Azpil is from Cole

But way greater points potential. I think Cahill is safe - Ivan/Azpi and Cole fight for two places...

I don't like the no backup gk approach.
Hull have 7 cbs (not including Chester) stay away from anyone other than Davies.
If Zaha does sign for Cardiff, I expect Noone will again fall out of the side.
AJ is only good for the next 3.
Silva has frustrated me and I've finally given up on him 😀

              Had Ozil, didn't produce.

Giroud needs 10 chances to put 1 away.

Will keep an eye on Ramsey when he's back, but with Lallana/Cabaye/Eriksen in that price range at the moment, AJ with good fixtures etc, there's plenty of other options about.

Theo would have been a season keeper for me if fit.

Maybe because I'm an Arsenal fan I've got Wilshire in the WC atm but I'm tempted by to switch....Hazard - Yaya - Cabaye - Wilshire (Noone).

          o/

          Me!

I currently have Ozil. Will be ditching this week though for A Johnson.

May jump on the Ramsey wagon once he has a few games under his belt, and assess whether he has shown any signs of his early season form.

None of the others interest me.

Hi all, Need some advice on my wildcard team:
        Tremmel - Marshall
        Ivanovic - Koscielny - Bardsley - Ward - Bruce(atm)
        Hazard - Mirallas - Cabaye - Johnson - Puncheon
        Suarez - Aguero - Adebayor
        Have 1.5m in the bank.
Can't decide between Ade and Bony.
        Be critical please 😀

Check when Vorm is back, I thought I heard it was now/soon? If so, Tremmel is a dodgy pick, especially as Swansea have been poor at the back anyway.

I would pick Terry over Ivanovic, what's the price difference?

I guess you'd just be rotating Bardsley / Ward / Bruce? You may want to check Palace and Hull fixtures, because Hull have easy opposition away, but tough home games. Hull haven't been too great on the road this season...

How about swapping Bruce for Williamson of Newcastle? And playing whichever one is at home? Sunderland do have fantastic home fixtures, though I'll admit I haven't looked at Newcastles...

Finally, I'd pick Adebayor. Bony has 3 good fixtures coming up but Spurs aren't bad either, and is the better long-term option.

          Good luck newbie!
