With just four fixtures to go, Avram Grant is verging on his second Premier League relegation in as many years. West Ham currently prop up the league with 32 points, but there’s still a handful of clubs that could potentially drop down to the Championship. A few wins coupled with results elsewhere going in their favour and the Hammers will be safe and sound. A look at their remaining fixtures (mcy BLA wig SUN) suggests that, apart from a testing trip to Eastlands, there are reasons for optimism around Upton Park.

One of the only positives to emerge this season has been the naming of Scott Parker as the FWA Player of the Year. With their star man potentially out of the next few matches nursing an Achilles injury, however, Grant will be relying on other members of the team to aid their survival. Step forward, then, Thomas Hitzlsperger, who in Parker’s absence will have greater midfield responsibilities. Fantasy Football Managers may also see potential in the appropriately nicknamed Der Hammer

The German international has missed the vast majority of this campaign due to a serious thigh injury picked up in pre season but since making his debut at the end of February, has undoubtedly proved his class. Although only scoring one league goal in West Ham colours, he’s more than capable of finding the back of the net with that famous cannon of a left foot.

Over in the Members’ Area we can see Hitzlsperger offers great goal threat. He has made 11 attempts at goal from open play over the past 6 Gameweeks; the same number as Samir Nasri and Nani. As the Hammers’ set piece taker, he’s managed a further 2 attempts at goal in those fixtures.

Hitzlsperger doesn’t just offer potential to find the back of the net, proven by his 3 assists in the previous seven games. Another look at his Opta Stats in the Members’ Area reveals that over those last 6 gameweeks, he’s had 16 Key Passes, the 5th best tally in the top-flight.

The Hammers’ attitude shouldn’t be a concern for Fantasy Managers who may be raising their lip over the thought of transferring in a table-propper-upper. Hitzlsperger recently said this about his manager:

“He wants us to keep our heads up. This week, he said that each of us should think hard about what we can do to play to the best of our abilities. That makes a lot of sense to me, because we can only get out of this mess by playing to our strengths. It’s too late to make drastic changes now. We won’t be able to turn into Stoke City overnight. We have to stay true to ourselves.”

Priced at just 4.9 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, you should be able to find some room for Hitzlsperger in your team. With stats that are more impressive than players double his price and West Ham desperate for points against winnable opposition, Hitzlsperger, and his low ownership of 0.9%, could be the difference between you and your rivals in these decisive concluding Gameweeks.

Captaining Lampard hay. Im still undecided, if i get Kuyt, he'll get it. Still trying to decide between yaya and Silva. If i get Silva, Fabregas will have to go, and most likely not return.

I can't see Wilshere ever playing 'the Fabregas role'. He's not really that sort of player.

He played there against Sunderland and barely made a pass of note. He's much more effective, at least at the moment, playing in the deeper role that he's been playing all season.

If Fabregas leaves, I don't think he will btw, then Ramsey/Nasri out of the current player will likely get the role, unless Arsene splashes out on someone else.

Hmm, i don't think you've seen the pictures of Valencia's injury. Not sure it can get much worse tbh. Ramsey was fit ages ago, but was sent out on loan. I think he's a good player, but Wilshere is far more progressed at the moment.

Valencia's break wasn't as bad. Also, he's getting gametime whereas Ramsey isn't. Hopefully he'll play more next season. I think he has more potential then Wilshere and is more likely to score goals.

So do I, assuming that Ramsey can get back to the level he was at before that injury. The media will always love Wilshere more because he's English, and tries very hard*.

*I'm not having a go at him, because I think he's an excellent player, but that is exactly why the media have fallen in love with him. Ramsey is more talented.

I'm not having a go, i just think the Dbronaldo-esq english media chat is absolute nonsense. Nationality is irrelevant, Wilshere has proved himself in bigger games, Ramsey hasn't. Aged 19, Wilshere > Ramsey, even though they play different positions in midfield. Aged 21, maybe Ramsey will improve more, but i doubt it personally.

Ramsey's better in the final third of the pitch, which you could argue is a harder position, while, as you point out, Wilshere is better playing deeper.

Not sure if Ramsey is quite where Wilshere is now though. he broke his leg when he'd only just usurped Diaby. Wilshere's a good 6 months beyond that.

It's not really fair to compare the two at this moment though. Ramsey's been out for action for over a year, and Wilshere has had a full season in the side.

All I'm saying is that pre-Shawcross, Ramsey > Wilshere, comfortably.

Who is least likely to start this GW?

    A) Valencia

    B) Walcott

More than 50% chance that neither will start?

If Dzeko starts then I think Balo will be pushed onto the wing and Adam Johnson will get dropped.

I actually think that will be the scenario for this game. However, I doubt this will affect Balo's returns that much

        Basically it comes down to:

A)Kuyt Fabregas Yaya Adam Lampard or
        B)Kuyt Nani Silva Adam Lampard.

Then next week, VDV will come in for Lampard(A) or Nani(B)

I know i should go for B but i just can't seem to lose Fabregas. Stoke and Villa coming up.

I suppose you have a point about Anderson. Seems to start every game he's fit for vs. Arsenal.

I thought maybe with the slight change of shape that Lord Ferg might not be so comfortable with Anderson.

Anderson was quality vs Everton too, very positive with his passing, but i reckon he'll have a defensive roll tomorrow with Rooney, Park and Nani told to hit on the counter.

Boom - did you see how poor Gibson was against Everton??!

And yeah, Rooney is the last midfielder in the 451, just like against Shalke. 451/4231 same thing really.

Your post got me thinking... if Rooney was ever reclassified as a midfielder on FPL, I think most people would captain him every single week, the new Ronaldo if you will.

Rooney is technically playing as a midfielder though. He's no further forward than Gerrard was a couple of seasons ago for Liverpool.

In fact, he probably does more defensive work than Gerrard did/does/ever will do.
