How much of this game is luck and how much is it skill? You obviously need to have some knowledge of football to do well but i nearly always go for my gut instict.

All fantasy leagues require skill; so that you can compete. They require luck; as a differential to get ahead of other skilled players.
Last GW I had brought in Rooney; which looked like a bad move. If you watched the game; he missed one clear goal short side. He ringed another off the post. That's what made it a bad move; just a few inches.
You also can't predict injuries. Without a doubt you need luck; but no one can get through with luck alone.Open Controls

I know in the past managers have said players have picked up knocks before an "easier" game then they play again several days later in what is deemed a much tougher match.
