The Weekend Team News

With a weekend of FA Cup action getting underway later today, Fantasy managers still have plenty to ponder. Santi Cazorla misses out for Arsenal, John Terry is still sidelined for Chelsea, Michu may return for Swansea, Samir Nasri is back for City, whilst Roberto Martinez admits he’s keen to be cautious with Ross Barkley’s fitness. Here’s what yesterday’s press conferences brought us:

Arsene Wenger will be without the services of Santi Cazorla for Sunday’s home clash with Liverpool. The Spaniard is ruled out through illness as the Gunners look to avenge last weekend’s 5-1 hiding at Anfield. Wenger welcomes Mathieu Flamini back from suspension, though, but admitted he may not make too many changes from the side that drew with United on Wednesday evening:

“I will play a team with a good opportunity, a good chance to qualify. Will I rest one player, or two or three, I don’t know yet. Certainly we will have just have one focus, which is to win the game. We have rotated quite well, if you look at the number of players we have used. I have the same level of confidence in every player. For example, I rate Jenkinson but Sagna has a bit more experience so when we go in a game with more pressure I give the advantage sometimes to the experienced [player].”

Jordan Henderson may miss out for Liverpool after undergoing wrist surgery, with a late decision expected to be taken on the midfielder’s availability. Brendan Rodgers reckons Glen Johnson could remain sidelined for the Emirates trip. The right-back returned to training over the last few days and his manager is optimistic he could be in the frame for next weekend’s home clash against Swansea:

“We’ll be similar to what we were the other night [against Fulham]. Glen Johnson is working very well. I’m not sure he’ll be ready for the game this weekend, but if we can have a good week next week he’ll be very close. He looks fresher and he looks fitter. That period that he’s had out has really helped him. He’s in good condition. But there is still a bit to go yet.”

Samir Nasri and Javi Garcia are back in the City squad for this evening’s visit of Chelsea. Manuel Pellegrini has admitted Sergio Aguero, Fernandinho and Matija Nastasic are all still sidelined through injury before proceeding to hail Nasri’s return as crucial:

“Nasri is a very important player, so it’s impossible not to miss him. But we’ve also had other injuries before Sami, with David Silva, Sergio Aguero or Jovetic or Kompany and we always managed to continue winning. I think in the last two weeks, maybe we have injuries in the same position and that was our major problem.”

John Terry misses out yet again as Chelsea make their way to the Etihad. Jose Mourinho confirmed his captain is sidelined for the third successive match due to a muscle problem, whilst his worries in central defence are building – Gary Cahill was due for scans on the calf complaint he picked up during the midweek draw at West Brom.

Gus Poyet may be set to welcome back Carlos Cuellar from a hip injury as Sunderland prepare to face Southampton. The Black Cats boss has confirmed his intentions to play Emmanuel Giaccherini and new boy Ignacio Scocco but also revealed the cancellation of Wednesday’s trip to City has had a significant effect on his likely line-up:

“The postponement changed my plans, no doubt. It’s a totally different situation now with no game midweek, so it will be a totally different team. Normally you don’t put out the same team on Saturday that you put out on Wednesday but we didn’t play a game Wednesday so I have to bear that in mind. It gives me a chance to name a stronger side than I would have but I will still make changes though. Giacchy needs to play football and we need to help Ignacio feel the pace of the English game. I’m sure he’ll be surprised at the speed – in the first 10 minutes he’ll be thinking ‘oh my god!’ – but he needs to get used to it and this is an opportunity for him.”

Roberto Martinez discussed the fitness of Lacina Traore and Ross Barkley ay Everton’s press conference yesterday. The Toffees manager confirmed the former is poised for his club debut after arriving on loan from Monaco last month before revealing he somewhat regrets rushing Barkley back into action after the youngster was sidelined with a toe injury:

“Lacina has been sharp in training and has surprised everyone in the medical department at how quickly he has got his fitness levels high for the competition. We have to make sure there is no risk for him to participate but, clearly, there is a good opportunity for him to be involved on Sunday in one way or another. …..I did bring [Barkley] back too early, especially for the game against Aston Villa. We need to make sure that now, he’s fully recovered and refreshed, and is ready to have a massive role between now and the end of the season. Ross is going to be vital for us in this final third, and we need to make sure we use him wisely and when he is 100 per cent.”

Swansea boss Garry Monk is hopeful of a return to action for Michu at Goodison. The Spaniard has failed to play since late December after undergoing ankle surgery and missed a couple of days’ training recently but has now stepped up his recovery:

“He was training today, so we’ll see how he feels. If he’s a possibility for the weekend, we will talk to the player. Maybe he will be involved on the weekend.”

Kenwyne Jones and Fabio are cup-tied for Cardiff’s home clash with holders Wigan. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are waiting to hear back from United for confirmation of Wilfried Zaha’s availability, though – the on-loan wide man was an unused sub for his parent club in the Swans’ win at Old Trafford last month. The Bluebirds boss hinted he may make some changes for the clash during yesterday’s press conference:

“It’s a chance for some players to come in and show they should be playing in the league and I do not go into any game hoping we lose.”

so... quiet saturday afternoon, lets talk about England. What would your squad be for the World Cup right now? think this would be mine -

    Hart, Foster, Forster
Johnson, Walker, Baines, Gibbs, Jags, Cahill, P Jones, Smalling
Gerrard, Carrick, Wilshere, Sterling, A Johnson, Lennon, Townsend, Henderson
    Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck, Carroll

Yep thats right, no Cole or Lampard.

      Are you a Portsmouth fan???

I'd have Shaw, Lallana, J Rod AND Lambert in there at the expense of Gibbs, Lennon, Sterling and Carroll.

Gibbs would get injured just walking to the departure lounge. Lennon is a 1 in 10 game player, usually only does well against Man United. Carroll only offers one option - Lambert can offer the same thing but has far superior technical ability and all round play - and he can take a penalty. Sterling looks promising but I feel like it would be too soon for him.

Blah blah blah fixture congestion blah blah blah rested teams blah blah f****** blah. It's like a broken record.

These players are professionals that should aim to win every game they play (because it's their f****** job to do so).

Sunderland will be celebrating two astonishing cup runs, not bemoaning it's potential impact on the league. Give me a cup victory/potential double over 7th place in the premiership any day.

On another note, Southampton should be fined for that today with supporters offered a full refund. It was a disgraceful lack of disrespect shown for the competition. They have nothing to play for in the league either. What's the logic behind it?!

There's something nasty about professional football these days. Let's bring it back to it's roots.

Pocchetino(sp?) and his refusal to speak to the media as it was "just an FA Cup weekend" pretty much sums up his, in my opinion, wrong and disrespectful view of the competition.

If that's the man giving out orders to his players, I can't imagine that he has hell-bent on getting the best out of his rested team of players.

But doesn't fielding a weakened team deliberately with very little justification bring the game into disrepute in a manner of speaking?

Not really, because a 'weakened' team is subjective. While it probably seems obvious to me and you that it is weakened, that can never be proven and for all we know he can say he has chosen the XI he thinks are best suited to beat Sunderland taking all factors into consideration.

And each team is allowed a squad. It would be unusual if they weren't allowed to use the players within that squad however they see fit.

I am sure there was an article going around about some research that showed teams with three of less days rest perform significantly worse than teams with four. You can say what you want about they are professionals etc. but they are still humans with human bodies.

If all other things being equal, Sunderland are at home and had 6 days rest compared to Southampton's 3 then Sunderland would still have had an advantage if it was First Team v First Team.

Ask Bolton fans if they are glad they had a cup run that caused fixture congestion that almost certainly was the major reason they got relegated two seasons ago and are now fighting to avoid dropping down to League 1.

The same kind of fixture congestion due to cup runs could now be the major difference between Sunderland staying up or going down. Once you drop out of the perm all bets are off because it's a damn hard road to get back again.

Southampton could have cared more about this tie and they are safe league wise. But the result really hasn't, in my opinion anyway, done Sunderland's survival hopes any good whatsoever.

How do you know that it was the cup runs that got them relegated?

How can you prove that there is any correlation between the two?

How can you be sure that their cup runs weren't just the scapegoats for their poor league performance?

Games, whatever games they may be, are not optional. These games are their careers.

Go back over the last month of their campaign and see how many games they had to play in quick succession.

Better still, don't bother wasting your time as you clearly have already decided that playing multiple games with a small squad on 3 days rest over a short period of time is perfectly acceptable.

Bolton were a bad team that season, which contributes to the problem when you are crap and you have to then play important league games without sufficient rest.

I didn't get the email some refer to but I've been able to set up a team. What does the email say?

I've not played the active sub game before so does it make sense to set your team up with 11 players from the earlier games?

The email doesn't say anything of note.

The best advice I can give is to read the rules, have a quick look at the scores of players on the transfers page (scores are per the UFPL rules, not FPL) and go from there.

You can sub players before the first game of each day so set your XI with players for Saturday then switch the flops out on Sunday. The beta goes to the end of thee season.

I think the major reason its lost its lustre is that there's too much football on the TV nowadays.

Back in its heyday the FA Cup Final was one of the few games you actually saw live on TV and there was a magic and novelty about that.

Also, only the winner of the league qualified for what was then the European Champions Cup (now UCL) so winning the cup was a big deal and gave you European football.

Nowadays we're saturated with so much football on TV and the rewards are so much greater for the top 4 teams in the Prem than it is for winning the cup that its inevitable the cup would lose its shine.

Superb work, thanks! I'm going to give this game a go so your efforts are very much appreciated.

Looking through the numbers it struck that it would be interesting to see the % by which some players points had increased. So, I copied your work (hope that's okay) and just added in an extra column in a new spreadsheet. Hope it helps 🙂

I'm pissed because Sunderland won the match and eliminated Southampton and now Liverpool not playing in GW29.

Bye Suárez and Sturridge and even Gerrard... 🙁

    Who else???

Why sell Suarez? Unless you picked him up fairly recently, you'll lose out on about £1m for a maximum £0.3m decrease, and you'll want him back in for the double gameweek to follow.

I will not sell him, never will, I'm just upset because he will not play in GW29 as well as Sturridge that is another Liverpool player I have. 🙁

Ah, when you said "bye" I thought you meant sell. Certainly we might be running out of spaces on the bench...

What double gameweek? Do we know when that game will be played. Why care about TV, I prefer the points.

Just realised Charlton vs Sheff Wed is postponed. If that match isn't rescheduled and completed soon, the BPL team that faces them will have major fixture problems. Worth keeping an eye on.

UFPL just looks like more work than fun. Did my team there and lost interest half way through.

    Probably just FPL for me.

At least there's an unlimited transfer period AFTER GW 29 so everyone can go nuts with DGW players for when the squads get locked.
