Having analysed those teams with Strong fixtures yesterday afternoon, we turn our attentions to those clubs with less fortunate schedules. Two of our featured sides may have a pair of home games this week but tough times still look likely as we assess what’s to follow over the next four-to-six Gameweeks:

Southampton

southampton311

The Saints face a trip to Tottenham this weekend at a time where many sides are bracing themselves for a pair of fixtures. Already, the likes of Jose Fonte, Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez have suffered significant sales as Fantasy managers part company with Mauricio Pochettino’s main assets in order to capitalise on the double Gameweek.

Southampton also pay visit to the Etihad in Gameweek 33 and travel to an improving Villa side a couple of weeks later. With a home clash against Everton also on their agenda over the next six, it leaves just a couple of favourable St Mary’s encounters against Newcastle and Cardiff – with other sides set for doubles in Gameweeks 34 and 37, the exodus is likely to pick up pace.

Arsenal

arsenal31

The Gunners’ title bid is set for a real test over the next few matches as they square up to three of the current top six over the upcoming three Gameweeks. A trip to Stamford Bridge is somewhat offset by the visit of Swansea for next week’s double but Arsene Wenger’s side then face City and Everton in back-to-back matches before the schedule take a real turn for the better in Gameweek 34.

Over the short-term, then, Fantasy managers may be somewhat cagey when it comes to investing in the north London club. Wojciech Szczesny, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker face a challenging time to deliver the points, whilst Santi Cazorla and the erratic Olivier Giroud are likely to be overlooked for more consistent performers.

West Ham

wham31

One of only two sides to face a pair of home fixtures in double Gameweek 31, Big Sam’s troops welcome United and Hull to Upton Park with a an impressive record of just one goal conceded in the last three in front of their own fans. Certainly, the Tigers clash looks the most appealing of those two for owners of Adrian, though Allardyce’s decision to freshen up his backline saw James Collins drop out of last week’s 3-1 loss at Stoke.

A trip to Sunderland then precedes back-to-back games against title-challengers Liverpool and Arsenal – faith in Kevin Nolan could diminish over those matches, with the Hammers skipper perhaps sacrificed in midfield once the double is out of the way.

Be Wary Of…

Liverpool
A trip to Cardiff and home clash with Sunderland has understandably led to significant investment in Brendan Rodgers’ main men, with Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez carrying the hopes of many into the double Gameweek. After that, though, the Reds next three home games sees Spurs, City and Chelsea all roll up to Anfield – the latter two, in particular, could prove particularly testing for the free-scoring Merseysiders and will perhaps persuade Fantasy managers to carry one, or perhaps a maximum two players into that schedule. Rodgers’ side have the form to make a mockery of the fixture strength, though, with Suarez owners already eyeing up a Gameweek 35 trip to Norwich with anticipation, given his history against Chris Hughton’s side.

Newcastle
Similar to West Ham, the Magpies also play twice in front of their own fans next week. Palace and Everton both roll up to St James’ Park but Newcastle’s recent record without the injured Loic Remy is a real concern – they’ve failed to score in the last four games without the prolific Frenchman. Following the double, Alan Pardew’s side have tough trips to Southampton, Stoke and Arsenal and also entertain United, suggesting that points may be hard to come by at either end of the pitch.

Fulham
Felix Magath can breathe a sigh of relief after steering his side to their first three points since taking the helm last weekend but one look at the schedule suggest the Cottagers boss can quickly curb his enthusiasm. A trip to City this weekend is followed by games against Everton, Villa and Spurs in the subsequent four – few, if any, Fantasy managers will be backing Fulham over the run-in.

Repost warning, to see if I get some replies this time:

I currently have (with one hit):

Coleman - Chester - Ivanovic (Cahill - Vlaar)

    What is the best option?

    1. Ivanovic/Cahill to Baines for -4
    2. Ivanovic/Cahill to Zabaleta for -4
    3. Don't take another hit.

I have 9 (+ Ivano and Hazard) at the moment.

I think the question is whether long term it is better to have 2 chelsea defs, or one + Baines/Zabs to capitalize on the extra games. I find baines overpriced, but the fixtures sure are tempting...

      2: Cahill out.

I will be doing Fabio/ Boruc to Zabaleta/ Mannone (for -8).
Think Zabaleta are in for a good GW with Fulham at home, and an attack minded Evra away.

this was before the man utd game:

A knee injury had ruled Lucas out since the clash with Aston Villa on January 18, while Sakho hasn't figured since sustaining a tear to his tendon at Chelsea in December.

Rodgers added: "Make no mistake, the two players are very valuable players for us in our squad and if they're called upon to play or come off the bench between now and the end of the season, of course we will use them.

"Lucas and Mamadou have got great commitment to what we're doing and we'll welcome them back into the squad."

my reading from that was they'll stick with what's currently working, but he's happy with his back-up

Hazard is a flat track bully, only 1 of his goals this season has been against a top 5 team. I predict this to be a low scoring game, even a 0-0.

Benching Hazard doesn't seem too much of a risk this week considering how many people are selling him.

A couple of comments by ILF and SW6* got me thinking, and they were regarding teams with little to play for being easier opposition that those scrapping for the top/European qualification spots or to stay out of the bottom three. I defined these teams as: Southampton, Newcastle, Villa, Stoke, West Ham and Hull.

If you subscribe to the theory that they make easier opposition as they have less to play for and lose momentum, then it would be worth looking at the fixtures for those teams** and who they play against, in order to ascertain which teams have the most fixtures against this "easy" opposition.

Here are how many fixtures the rest of the teams in the league have against the above selection of teams with little to play for:

    United x5
    Swansea x4
    City x4
    Spurs x4
    Fulham x4
    WBA x3
    Cardiff x3
    Palace x3
    Everton x3
    Arsenal x3
    Liverpool x2
    Sunderland x1
    Chelsea x1

This could point to United, Swansea, City, Spurs and Fulham having fixtures which would give them the platform to have a good finish to the season. For the run-in (defined here as GW35-38), the following teams play the teams from our "little to play for" list***:

Swansea (twice at home, once away)
Spurs (once at home, twice away)
    City (twice at home)
    WBA (twice at home)
United (once at home, once away)
Arsenal (once at home, once away)
Cardiff (once at home, once away)
Fulham (once at home, once away)
    Everton (twice at away)
    Lverpool (once at home)
    Palace (once away)

Make of this what you will!

** yes, I have far too much time on my hands

*** Maybe it's a bit too early to look at now, since more teams could be added to our list of teams with little to play for as the weeks go by.

I thought this might happen! You could argue that, but I would say they do, since they could still realistically get into Europe (a must for a club the size of United), plus they will want to build for next season.

Maybe you're right. I guess this kind of anaylsis has it's limitations, but it was only to get a rough idea! I guess you have to take each team's form and fixtures individually rather than simply picking players from the teams at the top of my list.

Thanks 🙂 I think the theory is sound, but I guess the analysis has to be done on a more individual basis and updated as teams become safe from the drop or can't achieve anything else.

I think it will become a lot more important from GW35 once the majority of DGWs are out of the way and the picture is a lot clearer.

too lazy to do the math but I think United is still a few losses off from being mathematically ruled out of top 4 so until then, technically there is something to aim for I guess..

True, 12 points off, but City have two games in hand, meaning it's at least 14 points as Arsenal are 14 points ahead. The picture will become clearer in the next few games I guess.

I see your points about Hull and West Ham being in danger, but West Ham in particular have the form the secure safety in the next few games I think, plus a game in hand over many of their rivals. Hull may fall into that category though, but it's hard to say

Stoke and Villa look pretty safe at the moment, but I agree, they could quickly find themselves in a relegation scrap if results don't go their way over the next few games. I guess it's a bit too early for this kind of analysis, but we can revisit in GW35 as I mentioned above!

We first need to first prove that there is an advantage to playing mid-table teams.

The opposite view is with nothing to play for, they are more relaxed and play more freely, especially in the last few GWs.

Leading teams should maintain their form, but there should be a few bargains in teams that go on a late run to avoid relegation, especially if they have matches against mid-table teams with little to play for.

Two 60+ minute games takes out the hit, with two chances of scoring extra points. Not really worth it unless it's for an in form player though imo. Getting an average player has too much a chance of being pointless. If you're doing it for someone like Yaya, then ya it's totally worth the risk imo

    Now I'm stuck.

Has there been an update on Lovren's testicles yet? Fit for the weekend?

I Wigan win the FA Cup, Utd won't even be in Europe.

I wouldn't mind one bit if they miss out on Europe.

Look how it has worked wonders for Liverpool this season.

Worst case scenario for United is they still have Moyes next season and are in the Europa League.... group L or whatever ha

It sure helped, but we have done so well as we changed our ethos and went out for a clear playing style. I really don't think Utd having less games will make them any better.

    Current squad for this week:
    Boruc (Davis)
Coleman, Chester, Ivan or Ward (Ivan or Ward, Burner)
    Silva, Yaya, Mata, Sterling (Hazard)
    Suarez Sturridge Lukaku

    Good to go?
Been considering a -4 of Ivan to Zab (would be a Chelsea defender back in next week or two when funds allowed) or a -4 of Davis to Mannone, or a -8 for both.

    Thoughts?
