Despite United’s endeavours, there’s still plenty at stake in the Premier League. While Alex Ferguson will take his side to Ewood Park in search of a solitary point that will kill Chelsea’s hopes once and for all, there’s still unfinished business in the jostle for European spots and the desperate scrap for survival.

Seeking out highly motivated players who are certain to duck the threat of rotation is the key for Fantasy Managers. That means lowering our sights – looking to the basement battle for budget mid-price assets, whilst backing form players who look immune to the tinkering.

The Defence

Once again clean sheets are a major issue. We surely have to look to attacking potential once again to help plug the gaping holes left by the fact that, right now, no backline in the land can seem to muster a shutout.

Joe Hart was the only keeper to keep things pristine over gameweek 36 and so his selection is unsurprising. It also allows me to overlook Aleksandar Kolarov, thus assuring that the Serb will at last deliver on his promise and find the net in Tuesday’s game against Stoke.

The defence in front of the City keeper is made up of players who offer realistic hopes of points at both ends of the field.

Everton’s Leighton Baines has a tough trip to West Brom that seems unlikely to return defensive profits, but the former Wigan man is such a factor in the flow of Everton’s attacking play – he warrants inclusion. The fact that he remains on spot-kicks only reinforces his place.

Baines lines up alongside Branislav Ivanovic who, with Jose Bosingwa out, looks a secure option in Carlo Ancelotti’s defence against a Newcastle side who will arrive at Stamford Bridge without an obvious goal threat. With Kevin Nolan suspended, Chelsea should have more than enough to keep the Magpies at arm’s reach and, regardless of the importance of the occasion, they look well placed for defensive returns. Ashley Cole and John Terry also look certain starters, but Ivanovic has looked the most likely to trouble opposition on set-plays.

Birmingham’s Roger Johnson will face Fulham at St Andrews in a game that promises to be a tight, edgy affair. I’m tipping the home side for a narrow victory and Johnson, as the defensive leader, looks a good option for Fantasy Premier League Bonus if Alex McLeish’s side can keep the Cottagers at bay.

United’s Nemanja Vidic claims the final spot – there’s little justification required here. The Serb will skipper United at Ewood needing just a point to claim the silverware. With Blackburn out of the relegation mire, a narrow and somewhat polite away win would seem the most likely outcome.

Wolves’ Stephen Ward takes the Scout Pick bench role, he is set to continue in the striker support role for Wolves at Sunderland although, with Kevin Doyle in contention, there remains some doubt over his pitch time.

The Midfield

The midfield quartet is based on the firm foundation provided by Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, a player who, in recent weeks, has justified his price tag and billing as a heavyweight Fantasy option. Chelsea’s motivation against Newcastle on Sunday, 24-hours after United are likely to have settled the title race, is in question, but I’m willing to take a punt on a convincing home win in front of the Stamford Bridge faithful. With Newcaslte without the influence of both Nolan and Chiek Tiote in midfield, it’s a brave Fantasy Manager who goes into the gameweek without some cover in the Chelsea attack. Lampard, given his current level of scoring and role at set-plays and penalties, looks the most assured option.

The Chelsea man is joined by three players fighting for survival this weekend. Charlie Adam, like Lampard, is hugely instrumental from both deadball situations and open play and will surely be at the fulcrum of affairs when Blackpool take on Bolton at Bloomfield Road. Likewise Birmingham’s Seb Larsson has grown in stature over recent weeks and has established himself as both a creator and scorer of goals. He will be monopolising set-pieces when Fulham arrive at St Andrews.

The final spot is a slight risk considering the slight injury doubt surrounding Charles N’Zogbia, but the Wigan winger is simply too good a prospect to ignore. Available for a modest price tag, N’Zogbia is a regular fetcher of Bonus Points and has added goals to his repertoire in recent weeks to help keep Wigan afloat. A big player for the big occasion, he will surely be West Ham’s chief tormentor at the DW Stadium this weekend.

The Forwards

There’s little need to shift resources up front right now. The form of Robin Van Persie, Luis Suarez and Peter Odemwingie is such that I’m struggling to see alternatives that warrant change.

Van Persie is just so influential – it’s hard to imagine an Arsenal victory go by without intervention from the Dutchman. Equally Suarez has settled in the Liverpool lineup and adopted the lead role in a string of supremely impressive attacking displays. His selection once again denies Dirk Kuyt a Scout Pick place – by all means double up on Liverpool at home to Spurs but, for me, Suarez offers sufficient cover on what looks set to be another three points for Kenny Dalglish’s side.

The are, once again, several strong alternatives up front. Daniel Sturridge was unfortunate to come out of last weekend’s defeat to Sunderland empty handed and will be a major concern for Blackpool this time around. Wolves’ Steven Fletcher goes to Sunderland with four goals in his last four appearances, while Wigan’s Hugo Rodallega was a “Fantasy Island Risk” in this week’s podcast and, along with N’Zogbia, will be the Latics’ key man against the Hammers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      YaYa to NZog.
Since YaYa might get rested it could be worth the hit.
If you're behind you'll have to take calculated gambles.

Yeah, so I'm thinking Yaya isn't the best choice.

Hi guys I've got a slim 9 point lead to protect!
your input will be much appreciated.
Ive made 2 transfers Luiz and Nasri out for Djourou and Lamps.

    the team:-

    Foster (Mignolet)
    Smalling, Terry, Djourou (R.Johnson, Walker)
    Nani, VDV, Lamp, Adam, Toure
    Rooney, RVP (Zamora)

what team do u think I should put out?
Not too sure about Toure... after d cup final
    Captain? Lampard or RVP?

the guy at #2 has a similar team (made 1 change).... diff between teams is hes got Odemwingie, Skrtel, K.Jones & Dempsey

    Cheers!

Why did you take a hit if you were only up by 9? Or were they free transfers?

surely it doesn't matter if you're up by 9 or 90 if you think a hit is going to be worth it, it's worth it either way... But in this case I'd have left luiz in

If you are benching R. Johnson, play Zamora Bench Yaya
      I captain Lamps
He is more Likely playing 3-4-3 so, you should match him in tactics and play 3-4-3

for my view I play R. Johnson ahead of Smalling

Maxi is in good shape but in this case I like Nzog safe, VdV and Kuyt are playing against each-other I call this bad luck,
IMO: 1)Maxi could be rested for Carroll and Kuyt may drop deeper
2)Suarez for Drog better as you already have Lamps and Luiz chelsea cover

Definitely wouldn't transfer huth out since he's probably got the best game in gw38 and will most probably be fit by then.

Personally i think it's more than likely that one of huth or luiz will play, so not really worth a defensive hit.

Everyone is going wild for Nzogbia but he does have a niggling injury so i'm not sure that's any safer than silva who is a slight rotation risk but fit. Mancini won't rest silva unless he's really exhausted - third place is v important for city.

My dark horse for the last 2 weeks is nani - who has a point to prove if he wants to start in the champs league final, and with giggs almost certain to be rested, as well as possibly park benched in favour of attacking style (and maybe valencia given a rest) i think nani should get plenty of game time.

          Hi Zophar,

My gut feeling is that you are in the same boat as me: short of defensive cover. It looks like you have only 2 defenders playing: Evatt and Dawson with fairly bleak cs potential.

It's time to face some chin music as far as I'm concerned after preaching to the masses on here about avoiding defenders at this stage of the season.

However, we have a saviour: Baines. A midfielder, an OOP, cs chances, in form.

No hit, swap Luiz for Bainesy.

Best of luck for these last two gwks of the season! 😉

why is everyone so sure luiz won't play? Ancelotti has come out and said luiz is a good player and will get better, it was a team mistake, and yes he was angry with him as well as many others, but he needs to learn more about the defensive role in the premier league.

This last admission is perhaps most important since the last 2 weeks are a very good time to give him low risk experience

Injury concerns and the possibilty of Alex starting ahead of Luiz. Best to eliminate the doubt by selecting a player such as Baines who you will know will play.

One of the problems with selections at this stage of the season.

i agree luiz isn't 100% to start - but people are making it like he's 0% to start.

I think there's around 50% luiz plays, and 30% huth plays, so by my estimations that is 65% at least one of them plays.

haha. No but to be fair i think about it in terms of stats sometimes - not to the extent he does.

I definitely think people are quick to forget that when you have 3 slightly doubtful players, it is still very unlikely NONE of them will play.

True but if you have some spare cash, it makes some sense to invest in a player you know will start and give you pts opportunities at either end of the field.

only if you think thats the best transfer available to you, or if you think it's worth 4 point hit over 2 games (which requires a very good score from the incoming transfer)

even if it is how do you know which one is the problem? You could well sell the wrong one. I think one of them will play at least and you have bench cover.

not imo since he too is a slight doubt. I don't mind keeping hold of a slight doubt, but why bring one in? He will most likely start but could easily pick up a knock in a v competitive game

i agree he's a risk but not to the extent that 'it looks like you have only 2 defenders playing'

I think it looks like a 30-40% chance that he has only 2 defenders playing.

          1. I have much the same midfield issues. I've been tempted by Yaya -> N'Zog, and also by Silva -> N'Zog. All depends on rotation risk.

          3. I did Coleman -> Baines for what is effectively a hit (as I intend to do a mf transfer too), but I had even worse defensive problems. I've hung on to Huth in case he plays a good fixture in gw38.

I'm very curious on people's thoughts on the Yaya/Silva issue.

        Hmmm... 2 free trades.

        Probably YaYa->N'Zogbia

        Should 2nd transfer be:
        A: VdV->Kuyt
        B: VdV->Maxi
C: Fix up defence (Huth Baird Luiz R.Johnson Walker)
D: save trade for GW38 (bench out of Mids/Fwds is going to be a hard choice anyway)

If you reallt want to do C, you might as well transfer baird out for a slightly cheaper option, since he is ruled out of both games for sure.

At least luiz and huth have a v good chance of at least 1 game.

How about Baird - G Johnson? (A transfer i might well do since my defence is worse than yours)

Not sold on the 2nd transfer. I just know if I bring in a 2nd midfielder I will struggle to work out who to bench, which might tell me not to do it. So, it is either not use it this week or 1 in defence. Huth and Luiz aren't sure things to play and as you said Baird is out. Also, it means doubling up on Birmingham if one of the doubtfuls are out.

Hard to see Bent being dropped in a tough game such as this. With Houllier in hospital, Villa seem like a team ready to be taken apart at present.

Can see a few goals at ARS. Just weighing up betwixt Lampard and RVP.

Probably, RVP is the safer cap'n's bet, tbh.

i could also see chelsea winning big, but unlike suarez, lampard isn't essential to chelsea's goalscoring. He pops up in the box with a few goals, but he isn't the main creator, and drogba hogs set pieces now except pens.

Chelsea could win 4-0 and lampard get 3 points with torres, drogba and malouda hogging the points- would not surprise me one bit.

not really worth so much thought since we're almost certain ferguson will get a maximum of 3 points, whereas kalou could easily get double figures on his day. If chelsea don't play a full team, this looks even better for the peripheral kalou.

Same choice for me. I class N'zog as an OOP like Sess is now. Zog also a bonus magnet and has more to play for (which can be a disadvantage too). Sess has pens and no fitness doubts. Basically, a very tough decision! Their final fixture appears similar too.

Yeah, I think I will captain RVP as my rival has Suarez and RVP but no Lampard and I have a 10 point lead so would be a good idea to go for the same captain in case Chelsea win while Lampard does nothing

Thanks for the advice a couple of days ago but in the end I got Kuyt rather than Nani as I think Alex Ferguson has stated that he will start a strong line-up against Blackburn and Man U did well in the Champions league playing Park and Valencia so I decided that may well be the starting lineup against Blackburn. May be my mistake but I did appreciate the advice

              probably sensible.

Seems like only me and tosey are thinking of buying nani - but to be fair i'm happy to be in his company since he's ranked about 100th!

Yeah, he also has and is very keen on Kuyt for this GW which along with some other users advice swayed me in the end

That depends on whether Carroll starts for liverpool in GW38 and also whether Nani plays in GW 38 so both are a gamble in relation to being great choices for both gamesweeks?

If I can increase my mini-league lead in this GW and as my rival has Nani I could always transfer out Kuyt or Lampard to get him in for the final GW if I think he has a chance of starting

I agree on this. N'zog, as much as I want him, comes with a risk over his fitness. He has been a doubt every week for a while now and keeps getting withdrawn early. Admittedly, he has usually scored by this point and he will need to be dead to not feature in this one...

Jaf, I can't get baines without selling silva for nzog. What I like about baines is that he has point potential even in gw38 , wish arteta wasn't back though

          I like Baines - basically a mf in one's defensive 3.

zophar - if you didn't have money concerns would you hold onto Silva rather than Yaya this week?

I am of the opinion that both yaya and silva will miss the epl stoke game

They will both have played 3 games in 7 days and the wembley pitch is especially tiring. City have cover in viera for yaya and milliner aj swp for silva.. Lots of options

What I have noticed is silva many times comes on as a sub for 20 or 30 min or withdrawn before 60. Yaya usually starts or doesn't feature at all. Few times when he has come off has been injury

So I would retain yaya over silva
