Fixtures

The roundabout otherwise known as “Frisking the Fixtures” is rocking once more as teams go hopping on and off at fantasy manager’s excitement and/or peril. It’s up to us to keep up to speed with all these comings and goings and raise a flag of awareness for the good and the bad, so let’s take a peek at what gameweek ten (and onwards) is telling us…

The Highs…

Everton
David Moyes’ men get their first favourable frisking of the season, and boy it’s a good one. After their usual ploddy start to the season the Everton train has started to pick up pace over recent weeks and the fixtures that coincide (clicking sort by difficulty on your next six ticker will show you they are top dogs) with the form spell excellence with a capital E. The Toffees are set to stay close to home over November as they have four home games in the next six, and they’re quite attractive too (STK, BOL, ARS, WBA); plenty of potential for the forwards in particular, and not so bad for defenders either. Midfielders Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta should expect to see bumper investment in the coming time, as should ultimate “out of position” candidate Seamus Coleman and the not quite so bargain Leighton Baines from defence.

Bolton
Bolton join the budget parade when it comes to favourable fixtures as they too are about to be sticking close to home a lot over the coming month. Bolton have only lost once so far this term, and that was at Arsenal with ten men, so now the games on their horizon shine brightly the results, in theory, will only improve, and aligned rightly could see a Trotters investment provide hearty returns. Johan Elmander will hopefully bring his away form to the Reebok Stadium and slots alongside Kevin Davies as a potential new striker. Martin Petrov and Chung Yong Lee will provide viable midfield variants and Gary Cahill and Zat Knight will provide your medium and low price defensive options.

Arsenal
Arsenal get drafted back into the considerations with a strong leaning on their fixtures in the next two weeks (WHM, NEW). When it comes to home sides, The Gunners are ones you want to be looking for without question or doubt, so two home fixtures against two of the weaker sides – and reasonable, if not stellar fixtures to follow – in the Premier League sounds a few sirens. Star captain Cesc Fabregas is likely to see a renewed vigour of investment from the fantasy crowd as he provides the answer to the all important captain’s conumdrum for the next two weeks, as well as players like Samir Nasri, Theo Walcott and Marouanne Chamakh all offering an opening at a price not quite as demanding on the budget.

Also to consider: West Ham (but maybe not this week in particular), Man United (with four nice home fixtures and a derby game in six), West Brom (for the long haul) and Blackpool (with a home fixture against the Baggies that looks like it has goals in it).

The Lows…

Blackburn
A simple continuation of the theme from the week previous, Blackburn’s fixtures are not good and investment in their wares carries a great deal of caution with it. Investors in their midfield and attack (anyone?) will be pretty sparse and those with a defender or two in their unit – which will be many people – may need to hunker down and expect clean sheets to be a bit of a commodity over the next month or so.

Birmingham
In two weeks time Birmingham have a pretty nice fixture (at home to West Ham), but other than that everything is most definitely not peachy on the home front, on the away front – on any front. A local derby against Aston Villa this week might appeal but is a fixture that can throw up just as much surprise, but certainly poses a threat – as with the above Blackburn – those who use their Birmingham quota to bolster their defensive unit. Throw in some fixtures with Spurs, Man City and Chelsea not soon after and the bigger picture begins to take shape. Foster, Dann, Ridgewell and co might be expecting to see some of their owners turn heels and run.

Wigan
As an opposite to those clubs highlighted as fixture angels, Wigan join the club of fixture demons with the fact they will be playing away from home four times in November a key contributing factor. Three of those long bus rides aren’t exactly the easiest places to go to either (Craven Cottage, Ewood Park and Old Trafford), which only compounds the fact investors may see trouble ahead, particular with some stern defences in the sight-lines. Rodallega and N’Zogbia are going to have an uphill challenge to get the kind of scores managers will be wanting following their recent uptick in performances.

Be wary of: Wolves (who’s fixtures are still very rough), Sunderland (with three away games in four for the poor travelers) and Spurs (with a mish mash of so-so fixtures).

    Anyone able to squeeze more big names into their front 8 than:

    Fabregas, Nani, VDV
    Drogba, Tevez

    ... with Adam, Barton and Carroll in support

    Trying to accommodate a Barton > Fabregas move, but it would mean losing one of the big forwards to an Odemwingie/Elmander/Varney type.

      I'm aiming for :
      Fabs - Maloudda - VdV - Nani - Adam
      Drogba - Berbatov - Carroll

      Have quite a bad defence behind that front 8, though, so I might consider kicking Malouda out to accommodate bosingwa and upgrade berba to tevez.

    i am so torn by this fabregas issue. I feel like I have to get him in but so unsure of losing malouda to do so. Bale makes more sense to go but that would mean downgrading Berbatov to free up cash.

    See a lot of people suggesting losing Drogba, surely that will bite you on the backside in the long term?

      You can't have everyone. Therefore, you have to choose which of the 'big hitters' to include in your team - simples.

      The hard part is deciding... 🙂

          My foot is OK thanks, got 29 weeks for it to heal.

          Not in a very good mood - the Dallas Cowboys played like shit and Miles Austin did'nt score the 9.70 points needed to win 3 H2H games out of the 9 leagues I'm in. What could have been 8 wins and 1 loss ended up 5 & 4.

            No problems on this side(other than FPL!) Got a bit of a scare when I tested my cholestrol levels yesterday. Need to replace the red meat with fish/fruit/vegetables.

    I loved this idea that went around pre-season with a flow chart. I'm not sure who first came up with the idea but it's brilliant, and thank you whoever you are! I made one (took me nearly an hour) and I think it'll help lots of people. As you probably know, it's about getting Fabregas in. Here goes!

    1. Do you have Fabregas? Yes, go to X. No and I want him, go to 2. No and don't want him, go to 12.

    2. Do you have Ashley Cole? Yes go to 3, No go to 6.

    3. Do you have BOTH Malouda and Drogba? Yes, go to 4. No, go to 6. If this is your second time back at 3, go to 5.

    4. Do you have Tevez? Yes, go to 5. No, go to 8.

    5. Replace Malouda with Fabregas downgrading a defender or midfielder. Go to X.

    6. Can you replace a mid price midfielder for Fabregas by downgrading defense? Yes, go to X. No, go to 7.

    7. Can you afford to downgrade just one striker who is not Tevez or Drogba for a mid price midfield swap to Fabregas? Yes, go to X. No, go to 3.

    8. Do you have two cheap ( Fabregas. Go to X.

    12. Get Nasri at the very least, but don't be surprised if Fabregas scores huge.

    X - I have Fabregas!

        Thank you for your kind words, Camzy.

        Your post bought back a lot of fond memories of the days when we were all still full of hope, had unlimited transfers every day and having all the above mentioned players in the same team was possible on the budget available.

        And yes, this flow chart accurately sums up my position too. Specifically 1, 3, 4 and 5.

        I have clearly taught you well, grasshopper!

            As someone said mine was done as a parody. My problem this season was starting of with Rooney and Fabregas instead of Drogba and Malouda. And selling Cole early for Alex.

        Cole is more 'must have' to me than Malouda. Pretty much nailed on 9 pts every game at the moment.

        Put it this way. In my mini league all except me has got Van der Vaart. I have Malouda. All have Cole, except me, who has Tevez.

        I'm 4th.

        Not having Malouda isn't killing them whereas not having Van der Vaart is killing me. They are all managing fine without Tevez. Not having Cole is killing me.

        You do the math.

    Ok. I'm playing a different version of EPL Fantasy, where points are only awarded for stats and there are no bonus points for performance. Which of the following teams below is the best?

    Hart
    Vidic, Clichy, Elmohamady, Coleman
    Malouda, Nani, Van der Vaart, Brunt,
    Tevez, Caroll, Drogba

    OR

    Hart

    i kinda like wigan's fixtures till GW 16 and i'm prob gonna keep alcaraz(got him at 4.3 so no big loss).. agreed that i'll prob have to bench him this week .. but after that they've got
    Blackburn(A) Liverpool(H) WBA(H) Whm(A) Stoke(H).. possible clean sheets there.. Liverpool and blackburn look the toughest bets but they're pretty blunt upfront.. so alcaraz stays.. dann however is gone after next week.. nightmare fixtures!!!

      What no Drogba?

      You have the same midpark as me, Cecsy, and am faced with the same Nasri dilemna. Like me, if you want Fabs, then the expensive forward options will have to be downgraded.

      I'm looking at downgrading Berba for either Oddbod, Dempele, Carroll.

      The thing that puts me off Nasri is: Fabs will outscore him and is a Captaincy rotation; Nasri may be rotated but Fab won't;having two ARS mids in the team is a risk; Fabs may take over the points a la VDV.

      Nice moving getting in the Swinga-you reckon he'll start much from now on?

        No Drogba - wasnt finding his returns worth the price tag and also had to plan to get Fabs in so couldnt afford having Drogs. Settled for Berba instead.

        Dont like for than one cheapie in my forward line (Elmander) so considering Hernandez if he is likely to start over the next 3 weeks.

        Surely Nasri wont be rotated with his current form - even Wenger has been singing songs about him? Hate getting rid of form players. Got to think about who's going to do worst out of my midfield lot over the course of the next few GWs.

        Took a punt on Bos - dont believe in predicting cleanies so getting attacking players in my defense and Bos certainly lived up to it. Plus couldnt afford Cashley. Think he will be rotated early on to ease him into a starting role. Anything more is a bonus.

          There is little between them at present. Nasri also takes more set-pieces and may well get penalty duties. Fab has completed 90 mins on one occasion this season. He was also a lot deeper than Nasri at the weekend. Personally, i think both are must-haves for the next 3 games.

    Want to get rid of Konchesky but, after I do Malouda to Fabs I will only have £0.2m left.

    Coleman is an option but I'm not convinced of his long term value. Also just £0.4 short of getting Bosingwa to pair with Alex.

    Get the feeling as soon as I take out Konchesky they'll start keeping cleanies again!

    I got stung by letting go of ash cole during chelseas "difficult fixtures" cos i had drogs and malouda and wanted cesc. I can't afford cole now cos his price has gone up and i got cesc in.

    Beware cole buyers. He's been doing really well in more difficult fixtures. as soon as they get easier games the forwards'll be getting more goals and more bps. also think about bosingwa. cole has been given license to run up as far as he likes like he used to do for arsenal and before mourinho pegged him back because he always had a defensive right back in ivanovic. now bosingwas playing rb only one of them can go up at a time.

    Cole will be the highest scoring defender this year and is nearly essential and selling him was a massive mistake but i'd think really hard before spending 8mil for a defender when you have the much cheaper bosingwa option to cover the chelsea defence.

    Also people selling malouda to fit in cesc. yeah he overperformed at the start and has hit a lull but as soon as lamps is back he'll be essential.

        It works like those mittens you have when you're a kid...... the ones that have a string between them that gets threaded up your sleeves. If you pull one down, the other goes up! I went Bosingwa last week, but fully accept it was a short term play, and will be a gamble over the long term.

        Regarding Malouda, you absolutely MUST have one of Lampard or Malouda. When Lamps returns, those people that sold him wont have either. After a few weeks of bad beats, they will bring one back in...... selling someone at 9.9 and buying back a few weeks later at 10.4 is bad business

    Did anyone here watch the Birmingham vs Blackpool game?

    Zigic received an assist for the Ridgewell goal...I saw the highlights of this game...Zigic headed the ball towards goal as an attempt, the ball hit the crossbar and bounced back into play when Ridgewell headed it in. Zigic's attempt was towards goal and not to set up Ridgewell...

    Now Carroll did the same thing...his attempt (also a header) hit a defender and then bounced for Nolan to score. Exact same scenario with one hitting a post and the other a player...Yet Carroll got no assist and Zigic did...

    Is there a ruling that judges this differently (Post vs Man) or is this just another FPL scam?

      Not only is it different for the post/bar, it's also different for the goalkeeper. If a shot is blocked by the keeper and someone else follows up and scores the original shooter gets the assist, no matter how significant the change in speed and/or direction of the ball after it hits the goalkeeper. If a shot is blocked by a defender and another striker follows up to score (which is essentially the ruling in the Carroll/Nolan goal), it's no assist.

      Fabs should no longer be protected - it's 8 days since his flag was reset. So Malouda has a head start but is going up slowly - the Malouda to Fabregas transfers are not helping him. My guess is that people will pile on Fabs later in the week and he will go up on Friday night - Malouda probably the same night, if at all.

    We need a new anacronym for Fabs so.....RMFP (Rate my Fabregas Plan)

    Plan 1:
    GW10 (2 free tfrs) VDV > Fabs & Berb > Pea
    GW11 No transfer
    GW12 Nasri > VDV & Pea > Elmander/Carroll

    means I have Nasri and Fabs for Arsenal’s good run AND I capitalise on the Kneee Jerk price rise while Little Pea plays in place of Rooster.

    Plan 2:
    GW10 (2 free tfrs) VDV > Fabs & Berb > Elmander
    GW11 No transfer
    GW12 Nasri > VDV & spare for something else

    I lose less money selling VDV than Malouda

    this is my team and I want to bring Fabregas or Nasri.

    I know that Fab is all-time captain, but I don't have enough cash to bring him in.

    What do you think Nasri is enough for my team?

    I could do:
    Bale---->Nasri
    or
    Tevez--->5.5-8.6
    Bale/Nani/VDV/Nzog---->Fabregas

    regarding flow chart, i should do Malouda -> Cesc.
    but i need another transfer to get enough fund.
    which 1 is better?

    A. Tevez -> Chamakh
    B. Tevez -> Carroll
    C. A.Cole -> Bosingwa

    thanks.
