We now edge past the halfway point of Matchday 4 after Holland and Costa Rica clinched a place in the last eight yesterday evening. Both France and Germany take to the pitch tonight with the expectations of Fantasy managers weighing firmly on their shoulders – having won their respective groups on the back of two wins and a draw apiece, the unbeaten duo now square up to Nigeria and Algeria for a spot in the quarter-finals:

France: Lloris; Debuchy, Varane, Koscielny, Evra; Pogba, Cabaye, Matuidi;Valbuena, Giroud, Benzema

Nigeria: Enyeama; Ambrose Yobo, Omeruo, Oshaniwa; Mikel, Onazi; Odemwingie, Moses, Musa,; Emenike

After ringing the changes in the final group game against Ecuador, Didier Deschamps makes six alterations to his starting XI for the 5pm kick-off . At the back, only Laurent Koscielny keeps his place as Rafael Varane, Mathieu Debuchy and Patrice Evra come in for Mamadou Sakho, Bacary Sagna and Lucas Digne. Elsewhere, Yohan Cabaye replaces Morgan Schneiderlin in central midfield and Mathieu Valbuena and Olivier Giroud are drafted in for Moussa Sissoko and Antoine Griezmann in the front three.

Karim Benzema will carry the armband hopes for many Fantasy managers this evening as he looks to add to his three goals and two assists so far, whilst Giroud and Valbuena, with a goal and assist apiece, pose a real threat to a backline that conceded three to Argentina last time around.

Stephen Keshi makes one enforced change to the Nigeria XI, with Victor Moses replacing the injured Michael Babatunde in the attacking midfield three. Ahmed Musa is the man in form for the Africans, after scoring twice against Argentina, whilst lone forward Emmanuel Emineke will be looking for his first goal of the tournament, having picked up a pair of assists so far.

At 9pm, Joachim Low’s side go head-to-head with an Algeria side that put four past South Korea and drew against Russia over the group stages. Germany produced two clean sheets in their opening three matches, though there’s no question who is the star of the show so far – with four strikes and an assist accrued, Thomas Muller is the only German player to have played a part in more than one goal. Mesut Ozil has tested his owners’ patience and has failed to deliver any returns, whilst elsewhere in the front three, Mario Gotze is expected to reclaim his starting berth after Lukas Podolski was ruled out through injury.

Having already exceeded expectations, Algeria can afford to play without pressure heading into this one. The only side to find a way past Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois so far, they netted in all three of their group games and have a number of budget form players in the starting line-up – attacking midfield trio Yacine Brahimi, Abdelmoumene Djabou and Sofiane Feghouli have all delivered a goal and assist apiece, whilst Islam Slimani has scored in each of his last two appearances as the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1.

I have a huge dilemma... by the looks of things Brazil will be going out of the FFS WC anyway, so my H2H probably won't matter, but I'll need van Buyten to outscore Mertens by about 15pts now, which is probably not going to happen...

My question is, do you think I should twist the captaincy from JRod to Messi in the hope that Messi can outscore JRod, thus giving me a chance to win the H2H, a chance I wouldn't have with sticking...

The only problem is that getting it wrong will see me plummet in rank, and I'm fairly happy being inside the top 2k...

Messi would almost have to get a hattie in order to outscore JRod. I'd have to say 80/20 against that happening

Do it, and rally your team to take similar risks as well. If you were on course to win McDonalds you might want to ply it cool, but so what?

I shipped about 20 pts in hand last round to try to catch you in a miracle finish and help Cameroon, though my score was already pretty rough.

If there is anyone capably of scoring 3+ goals it is Messi. The a captain should sacrifice his own score and take one for the team. It is the right thing to do.

    Looking for McDs protip here

Have Messi and di Maria playing tonight, and I can't accomodate em both unless I twist for Djabou who's on a 7 (and in this gameweek, that looks like a monstrous score).

I'll most probably have to play Messi, but should I punt on Di Maria for the Algerian?

    Thanks!

I have to say Yes, 7 points is right on the line. DiMaria is due a goal or assist. He just doesn't seem to score at all well in McSlop. He's had a 5, 7, and 8 and that's pretty poor for a "high price" mid.

I think Di Maria and Messi will both explode tomorrow, Di Maria was very unlucky not to get 1 or 2 goals last game and the Swiss Defense is pretty terrible, Argentina have a great chance to put 4-5 goals in imo. Djouru and Senderos= lol and no real DM

So I think I've worked it out...

    Him: 28pts + Mertens

    OR

    Him: 14pts + Mertens

Neither look likely to win but, the first one gives me an outside chance, if we get a freakishly high Messi score...

Lampard set to join Melbourne City, along with Villa and Duff who have already joined. So with Gallas, Heskey and the aforementioned three playing, I might actually start watching the A-League now, 😯

Melbourne City FC is actually just a rebranding of Melbourne Heart, so they didn't actually set up that club...

but in a small, growing league like the a-league it could be dangerous to have one club head and shoulders above the rest in star power

ironically, Melbourne Heart have been the worst team in the a-league for years, and now they look like the strongest lol (albeit with name change)

The same with the MLS. It's a decent policy, I think. It allows the clubs with more money to spend it without giving them as much of an advantage as they would have otherwise. A 10 million dollar team would dominate a 3 million dollar team, whereas a 3 million dollar team vs a 3 million dollar team plus Michael Bradley is fun to watch.

good point...mls is now starting to get good players coming in while still in their prime now

a-league is a bit more of a retirement village... but it will evolve i guess
