World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 6, Day 2

Argentina progress to the World Cup Final after edging past Holland on spot-kicks. The South Americans face Germany on Sunday evening, whilst Louis Van Gaal’s men square up to hosts Brazil in the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday:

Romero the Spot-Kick Hero
After Germany and Brazil’s eight-goal feast on Tuesday evening, last night’s match failed to live up to Fantasy managers’ expectations. A cagey goalless draw after 120 minutes resulted in penalties but the Dutch were unable to replicate their weekend win over Costa Rica, as Argentina keeper Sergio Romero saved two spot-kicks to send his side into the final.

The result afforded the South Americans a fourth clean sheet in the last five fixtures, though only two defenders – Pablo Zabaleta and Ezequiel Garay – have been ever-presents in Alejandro Sabella’s resilient side since the start of the tournament, with six appearances apiece. Argentina limited their opponents to a single shot on target over the entire 120 minutes and bearing in mind their struggles further up the pitch, many will be reliant on their backline to deliver the points against Joachim Low’s in-form attack.

In terms of personnel, Marcos Rojo returned to the starting line-up after serving a one-match suspension, whilst Enzo Perez replaced the injured Angel di Maria in midfield. Di Maria’s fitness could be key at the weekend, with Sabella’s side clearly struggling in the final third – Lionel Messi’s displays continue to frustrate Fantasy owners; he mustered just one shot across the entire 120 minutes and has now failed to find the net in each of his last three appearances.

Van Gaal’s Side Limp Out
Having swept their way through the group stages with a total of 10 goals, Fantasy investment in Holland’s key assets paid off handsomely in the opening few fixtures. As the tournament has progressed, though, Louis Van Gaal’s side have struggled to maintain that cutting edge and served up a second consecutive goalless draw last night.

Many Fantasy managers will still be holding a number of their options for the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday but bearing in mind both Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie have failed to score since Matchday 2, the Dutch boss must be tempted to freshen his attack up for the weekend clash against Brazil. The United man, in particular, turned in a shocking display and failed to register a single attempt before being replaced by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar on 96 minutes – the Schalke man has yet to start a match but could well be handed the opportunity as the Dutch look to finish on a high against their demoralised hosts.

At the back, Van Gaal’s side have now shipped just a single goal in the last four fixtures and with Neymar still sidelined on Saturday, their chances of another shut-out certainly look strong. Fantasy favourite Daley Blind started as a left wing-back last night but a tactical tweak at the break saw him shift into the back-three, with the Ajax man unable to add to his tally of three assists for the tournament.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Ron Vlaar led the way for recovered balls amongst the Dutch with 12, whilst Stefan de Vrij (11), Daley Blind (seven), Wesley Sneijder and Dirk Kuyt (five apiece) were next in line. For Argentina, Martin Demichelis was top performer with 12, followed by Ezequiel Garay and Lucas Biglia (both nine), Marcos Rojo (six), Pablo Zabaleta and Javier Mascherano (five each).

Nice write up as always Paul, but no mention though of the Sun Dream team star man...

Was it Mascherano ? No. 6 out of 10

Was it's the outstanding Vlaar? No only rated 7.

    Star Man... Romero 😯

    Made 2 saves in 120mins.

A lot of the star man ratings have been dubious right from the off! I was surprised that in the quarter final game between Costa rica game against Netherlands, Robben was given it and it should easily have been Navas or Gonzalez.

Totally disagree. So many times the fifth penalty taker doesn't even get the chance to take one. Get your strongest penalty takers in early IMO. Although Vlaar taking one first was down to others refusing.

Gustavo, Masha, Lahm at CM, De Jong are solid point scorers. Their normal top score for 90 minutes will be 7 or 8.

If you were picking Gustavo hoping for a 12 then you clearly haven't been paying attention...

Anyone mind giving me their thoughts on my FOX transfers?
Waiting for line ups, but just want some early ideas 🙂
Garay --> Lahm, Higuain --> Huntelaar, Schurrle --> Oscar

Would Sneijder --> Willian for a hit be wise? Really need differentials if I want to win it. Seems a little counterintuitive though, since both play in the 3rd place play offs and it's for a -3.

    Neuer
    Hummels Luiz Lahm
    Robben Sneijder Muller Oscar

im not sure but he got a similar amount of goals and assists to trippier last season....if he is cheaper than trippier then it will be interesting! 🙂

yeah 2 goals and 14 assists....should start for west ham too...they have a decent defence and he may be the main supply for carroll through his crosses...

I actually like the idea of dropping Messi. I can't take that risk though. Who would you bring in? What's your team like?

I like the look of Oscar, Willian, Huntelaar and Depay for this round. Need my differentials if I want to win it, quite a bit off ATM.

P.S I'm betting on a German cleanie in FOX. ATM I have Neuer and Hummels, plan to bring in Lahm.

Is RVP set to be a massive red herring this season? Everyone will draft him in due to United's fixtures and the LVG factor, but he finished last season on the sidelines and has had a flop of a World Cup after the first two games. His fitness is always a concern and a summer in Brazil can't have helped.

Rooney, meanwhile, could easily get overlooked yet again yet there's no evidence he's going anywhere and he's had a much longer rest than Robin.

Very possibly. Although so-so international form doesn't necessarily mean his domestic performances will decline. It remains to be seen if RVP has become an injury concern again, prior to last season he had a sustained period of appearing in the majority of matches and appeared to have overcome his fitness problems. If RVP does turn out to be a red herring who will replace him as a viable weekly captaincy option?

Longer rest won´t matter by the time the season begins, but I´m with you, Rooney could be overlooked but I'm afraid I get a bad start yet again for choosing 2nd string players, not that Rooney is one but will be in this case.

The worry goes away for me with no European football for United this year. Skip the Mickey Mouse cup too: RVP can focus on the league and the later rounds of the FA cup!

            Bad news for Arsenal fans

For the second time in 10 days the agent of Mikel Arteta has dismissed suggestions that the Spaniard could leave Arsenal this summer.

“The player has no intention of leaving London,” said Ibanez

“We have not spoken to any club and I would like to remind everyone that we are talking about the Arsenal [vice] captain, with all respect for Fiorentina.”

Poor Arsenal, they get to retain a good player, they must be devastated.

              ?

I want him to stay...he is an experienced player and has proven class...however i see his role as a squad player rather than a starter

Winning 70% of his tackles and 64% of ground duels in the PL, with a 92% pass accuracy is nothing to be sniffed at
