World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 7, Day 2

A month of thrilling football culminates this evening as Germany and Argentina take to the pitch in the 2014 World Cup Final. Many Fantasy mini-leagues are on the line tonight as Joachim Low’s free-scoring side square up to one of the most resilient backlines in the tournament so far:

Germany: Neuer; Lahm, Boateng, Hummels, Howedes; Khedira, Schweinsteiger; Muller, Kroos, Ozil; Klose

Argentina: Romero; Zabaleta, Garay, Demichelis, Rojo; Biglia, Mascherano; Perez, Messi, Lavezzi; Higuain

Low makes one late change to the XI that started the 7-1 rout of Brazil, with Christoph Kramer replacing Sami Khedira in central midfield. Mats Hummels has recovered from the knee problem that forced him off at the break last time around, then, while Miroslav Klose leads the line for the third successive match. Thomas Muller carries the hopes of many Fantasy managers into this one after serving up five goals and a trio of assists so far, whilst Toni Kroos’ double against the Brazilians has earned him plenty of new owners across the Fantasy games. Elsewhere in attack, Klose is gunning for his third of the campaign after breaking the World Cup Finals scoring record last week, though Low also has the option of Andre Schurrle off the bench, with the Chelsea man notching three times already.

Alejandro Sabella’s side is also unaltered from the semi-finals. Martin Demichelis gets the nod ahead of Federico Fernandez in the heart of defence once again, while Enzo Perez and Ezequiel Lavezzi are handed another start due to injury concerns over Angel di Maria and Sergio Aguero – the latter is likely to appear off the bench again, though. The South Americans have delivered four clean sheets in their last five matches and Sabella’s defence has been subject to heavy Fantasy investment as the returns dry up for Lionel Messi. It’s now three games without a goal for the Barcelona man now, who has looked lethargic for his country over the knockout matches – when it matters most of all, can he deliver?

  7. Time To Abandon Offside (and other ideas)
    Jafalad

    1. Offside. It’s time to do away with offside in football. Offside in the attacking half anyway. Hockey has done away with this rule for the benefit of the game (and television) and other invasion games like basketball wouldn’t dream of going anywhere near it. Yes, rugby has an offside rule but how many of its audience truly understand it?
    2. On the matter of offside, I discovered that no one on FFS could give a full accurate definition of the ruling. Startling stuff but hardly a surprise given the bewildering abuse at referees you hear from players and fans alike.
    3. Players feigning injury just to frustrate opponents/waste time/have a rest. I am sick and tired of this. Probably at its worst during Argentina v Holland. It’s time to borrow from rugby and allow the trainer on straight away whilst keeping the game moving. Players will no longer think about going down so easily when their team is 10 v 11.
    4. One for the Scouts I’m afraid. The country by country previews were excellent and one I fully utilised to bring me up to speed with the various countries. However, once the fantasy games started there was an alarming silence in terms of analysis, watchlists, player profiles, etc, from FFS. Same thing happened at the 2010 WC. Disappointing effort I’m afraid.
    5. McDonalds game. Hopelessly disorganised and unprepared. Never a good omen when a game opens just three days before the main event. And I came in the top 1k. 😕

    Enjoy the preseason!

No offside? Then I would imagine 10 attackers will crowd the goal area wait for the long ball from their goalie.

I think this is the reason why the offside rule was created.

Not necessarily. Better defenders will always deal with long balls. Besides, you are forgetting teams already try the long ball tactic despite having offside.

I think no offsides in the attacking half could work. Most teams defend inside their own half anyway so it wouldn't make a whole lot of difference to how the game is played. Keepers will get a lot more aerial action I suppose.

May be more crosses but the better teams always deal with this threat. Hence, why certain teams have moved away from route 1.

Defenders play a line & forwards don't time their runs. An earlier ball from the teammate beats the trap.

If you made it that the player couldn't be in the penalty box or final third/quarter when receiving the offside pass then it could have merit. Being next to the GK would make it a joke.

The point is the offside line helps defenders. Defences are so organised now that it can be extremely difficult to score goals when they 'park the bus'. What Jafa is suggesting is a means in which we can break that tactic and prevent the biggest games of football turning into an incredibly anti-climatic 0-0 stalemate. Its becoming worryingly frequent in both the Champions League and World Cup.

Good points Ryan. Interesting how everyone is seeing this as a good WC and using the goals scored as a reason.
If you go back to the origins of the game, goals were far more frequent then...

...and no offside in sight 😕

Yes, but I'd rather see goals that require some sort of skill to create the opportunity, rather than just opportunistic camping in the opposition's penalty area.

I also don't get your idea of it removing dull 0-0s. I think it will lead to more teams camping even deeper as they can't allow any space behind them.

Maybe introduce yellow cards for 3 offsides or whatever. It's the forwards role to stay onside. Seems a simple idea. Comparing sports doesn't make no offside more correct.

You are missing the point that offside happens. It's a rule we don't need. Time for some forward thinking imo.

It happens because the rule has been broken. Germany managed 7 goals with only 1 being offside at most. Ask a question with a poll below to see how popular your idea is.

A rule we don't need or have to have. Have a poll? Sure set it up if that makes you happy. Not into point scoring.
Besides, this isn't about popularity. Plenty of ideas were initially unpopular e.g. removing the back pass to the gk in the 90s. It's about thinking about the future and development of the game when other sports are looking at their own appeal on the world stage e.g. 20/20 cricket.

I feel you need to look at the bigger picture. Nothing sport ever stands still. If it were to do so, it would just wither away and die.

Awful reading there, Jafalad. "Not much skill needed to be offside and score" does not in any way mean that "not much skill needed to keep onside". If TM had meant that, then he failed absurdly. It means that it is easy to score if you are allowed to be offside, that is, between defenders and the goal when the pass is given.

you keep insisting that "offside happens" as if id made a case against offside rule. It doesn't. That offside fouls are called during matches only tells that the rule is in force and functional.

Like, you can say "drunk driving happens", and indeed it does, but that does not make a case for legalizing it.

some thought on number 4. I've been browsing this site for about 4 years now. In this period it has become richer in the way that they have a bigger variety of articles. But also poorer in the way that it has become more of a sponsered site driven by comercial interests. Playon betting articles, promoting fantasy games with a pay-to-win struckture. During this WC this site has been bad mouthing and talking down the McD game, I assume since they are sponsored by other fantasy games. The McD game is perfect for a competition like the WC. Lets you have a big squad and play with your 11 actively. Sure there GUI was not great in the beginning, but those of us that actually just learned how to use it instead of joining the whining choir had a great time. Just one small article from the scouts could have cleared out all uncertainties about how to change your formation during the first round i.e.

anyway, its been a great WC, both the McDs game and the football itself.

      cheers

Got nothing against the format of Mcds. Just the shambolic organisation of the game. Rd 1 was a write off for many with the formation malfunctions.
There was a number of functions and stats missing from the 2010 game. Disappointed that the game has gone backwards tbh.

On point 4, there were Scout Notes on a daily basis which included an element of player performance in the main fantasy games, I admit these were relatively thin on content but given that there have also been numerous articles being churned out on fixture/rotation analysis, new players, etc. which have to be fitted in somewhere this was probably as much as could be expected.

Apart from anything else I imagine Paul et al value a brief rest now and again! 🙂

The difference with hockey is that the pitch is smaller, aerials are harder, you cant flick it towards players, and when the person controls the aerial, the person has to be 5 yards away.

No offside in football would mean team would have to defend with mire players to cover the space, so it would be more defensive.

That's why hockey has a smaller pitch, is only 70mins, no extra time and rolling subs. You would have to make a plethora of rule changes for it to be feasible in football.

What I would bring in from hockey is sin bins, (green, yellow and red cards) and a self pass from free kicks.

I would really like FIFA to commit to an experiment. We are all guessing what it will look like.
I've played in 5-a-side games with no offside and none of the scenarios mentioned above ever eventuated. Need to have a look at the 11-a-side game and see what happens.
I'm not sure the smaller pitch in hockey matters all that much tbh as the sticks somewhat negates this.

Sin bins and self free kicks both good suggestions.

No offside - I played it once ... In the playground, we also had jumpers for goalposts, 16.5 minutes each way, refreshment break for the sandwich van and 3 referees (the number of teachers on duty). We also played with a tennis ball - I scored 8 and it finished 17-16.

Well, I simply don't agree. Maybe I lack imagination but I can't see any other outcome than the game devolving into mindless goal-poaching. Offside forces team-play and build-up.

Come on man, that last sentence doesn't do you much justice, you're better than that 😉

For me the "big picture" is that I much prefer seeing intricate build-up play and team goals. I'd rather see a complex 10-man move resulting in a relatively simple tap-in than a single, brilliant strike.

What you're proposing would shift the sport from a team game to an American style sport with one lauded hero and some faceless underlings supporting him. I would call that a smaller picture, personally.

You are making a lot of assumptions here. No one knows what it would look like.

It is an experiment that is worth having imo. I want the game to grow and develop not stagnate.

We live in times when other sports are increasing their appeal. Just out of interest, when has there been a rule change that has had a negative impact in football? Why are people so frightened of change?

As I mentioned above, plenty of rule changes were derided at first. Much like on here. Folk don't like change. Don't see others thinking about the game, fwiw.

I agree, nothing wrong in principle with changing the rules and it's worth exploring new ideas. But it's also worth evaluating which rule-changes are worth trying out. We can only do that with speculation and assumptions. You foresee a wonderful game with more goals, I foresee a game of limited team play and ultimately dumbed-down appeal. There's no way of knowing for sure without trying it out.

So why don't you try it out? Organise a few 11-a-side games with adults. Would be best to have a good few games so that some tactics can emerge. Tell us how it went. Film the games and send to the FA for consideration.

Perfect example is 3 points for a win. It seems so natural now, 2 points for a win sounds absolutely crazy. And yet it wasn't all that long ago.

Offside rule has been changed for many times so far, and arguably for the better of the game. But these have always been well considered changes and all of them have been backed up by arguments better than "we need to change things in order not to stagnate".

May as well take out the goals then.

Yes, I'd be interested in doing an experiment. I've just run a futsal clinic so I'd be interested in seeing what it would look like 11 v 11.

Sorry, I didn't quite grasp your first sentence.

I'm very skeptical of the idea (as you can obviously tell), but I would be very interested in how it actually played out.

But I would stress that you need more than one game for players to adapt and tactics to emerge.

I was interested to see a comment somewhere that one of the reasons that Brazilian footballers are not as good as they used to be was that they now play futsal with a lighter and larger ball than they used to, so they don't develop the same superior ball control skills.

The whole argument from popularity is bs. Football is the most popular sport, and growing in popularity against other sports, even in areas where it is not traditionally played. China, USA, India and Indonesia have climbed to the top of the list of most football players by country:

                  http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/bigcount/allplayers.html

Even in USA, that this argument seems to most concern, in 2011 "soccer" had climbed to second most popular sport amongst 12-24-year-old:

                  http://socceratx.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/ane9n_nciaak_nn.jpg

It is also now the 3rd most played sport in States:

                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_in_the_United_States

So, football is actually doing well, gaining popularity against these boring spectacle sports, and if the point is to make football more popular, it just sounds like a good idea not to change it to the direction of sports that are less popular than football.

So is keeping it the same the way to go then? Why have a rule that hardly any can define and is set out to limit the objective of the game?

Obviously I live in some time-related vacuum deep down in the mire.

Making changes is one thing. What you suggest is making stupid changes apparently just for making changes, and that is just plain stupid.

Firstly, most of the basic rules limit the objective of the game. That's why it is a game. If goals were just handed for free, there were no game to play at all. So that's no reason to change some rule or another. We have to look for their overall function in and for the game and I explained some of that below, not that you showed any signs of understanding anything about it.

Secondly, why is offside so hard to define to you? Or what do you not understand about it? It is relatively simple rule. There's a very good, short simple definition of the rule here:

                      http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/footballdevelopment/technicalsupport/refereeing/laws-of-the-game/law/newsid=1290867.html

To better understand what it exactly means, see this as well:

                      http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/worldfootball/clubfootball/01/37/04/27/interpretation_law11_en.pdf

                      That is very clear.

Essentially, a player is in offside position when he is in opponents half of the pitch and any part of his body with which he could play the ball is closer to opponents goal than both the ball and opponents 2nd last player. The ball cannot be legitimately played to a player who at the moment when ball is played by his team mate is in such position, except if the passer of the ball is restarting the game after ball had left the field play, i.e. giving a throw in, goal kick or corner kick.

Offside offence is when player in offside position gets involved in game by touching the ball (e.g. Higuain's goal in final), challenging for the ball (Yepes offside against Brazil), preventing opponent from seeing or playing the ball, or if he gains advantage to get to play the ball, say, getting to rebound first by being in offside position. If the player does not interfere or gain advantage, his being in offside position is meaningless.

I don't see this exception in either of your links.

Surely a player isn't allowed to receive the ball when he is in an offside position in the opposition's half and the ball is played forward to him directly from a throw-in or goal-kick?

Removing offside is the worst idea ever. The primary result would be the end of the high defence line.

All the teams playing attacking football these days play with a high defence line, but removing offside would make this impossible, because keeping defence line high would not take space away from opponent. Without offside rule, all teams would be practically forced to sit deep in defence and that would be the end of attacking football. It would lead to all teams parking the bus, fouling on midfield, and focusing on set pieces.

Another thing is that offside rule is essential to one of the main tactical elements that define football, because it allows teams to affect how much opponent has space to play in. How much of the field is playable for them at each moment. This aspect would be lost with offside.

In both ways, removing offside would make football stupid and remove some of things that distinguish it from other, lesser sports.

That era is imaginary. From all the history of football that we have record of the rules, there has been an offside rule, that has only become leaner by the time. Meaning that it was actually stricter at the time when more goals were scored.

This has been discussed before by Blatter and it is worth talking about. I certainly wouldn't suggest definitive outcomes as a result of a rule change however. Nobody knows what would happen if there was to be no offside rule. I would suggest that it would need to be experimented with in an actual competition to see how it will play out.

In my view a high line restricts the area of play and I think by opening up the whole field with no offsides would create more space and therefore more attacking play instead of annoying passes amongst the defenders and goal keeper. However that opinion cannot be affirmed without witnessing what would actually happen. Same goes for your opinion.

1-2. I think they should keep offside, but it might be easier for officials to make the correct calls if players were not allowed to blatantly stand in offside positions when waiting for free-kicks. It is very difficult for the officials to get it right when a number of players are moving between offside and onside positions and they don't know which of them are going to touch the ball or interfere with play.

      3. I find it extremely annoying the way that players stop play when another player is feigning injury, before the ball is returned to the other side but in less favourable circumstances. Except in extreme cases (if a player is seriously injured and the ref has not spotted it, which should be rare) players should only stop play if the ref tells them to. If the ref does not stop play, then it is up to the side whose player is injured to put the ball out of play if they wish, but they should not expect the ball to be returned to them in that case.

      4. The Scouts have been spreading their coverage more thinly than I would like over a number of games. I would also prefer it if they gave greater in-depth analysis of the most popular one, which in this case is the McD's one, but number of members of the FFS community have made valuable contributions towards filling the gap.
The main purpose of the site is to cover FPL throughout the Premier League season, which they do very well, so perhaps we should really just count anything on other games as a Summer bonus.

      5. Why did MCd's have to start from scratch again? Couldn't they just have adapted the 2010 World Cup game, which was much better?

      6. Another thing that annoys me is the time that players take to get off the pitch in late substitutions. Why can't the ref just stop his watch until play is ready to resume?

long gone are the days of the "Makelele" role - a pure holding mid

if we get him ill be delighted and hopefully he can flourish in that pivot alongside ramsey - what many forget is that ramsey is an exceptional tackler - combine that with a powerful mid like khedira and I see good things in our future 🙂

Very worried about the fact that JRod is more attacking than ADM.. and Kroos is more attacking than Khedira... So the defensive side to our midfield will now consist of an ageing Xabi Alonso, 2 CAMs in Modric and Kroos, and Casemiro 🙁

I suppose Illaramendi could be called defensive too.

Casemiro will be gone and I think one battling CM will be signed.Ancelotti is moving towards more controlled approach. So Kroos is excellent signing.Khedira has always been par or below par.Was given freedom to go forward but couldn't convert obvious goal scoring chances. The big champions league nights come to mind when he put in some below par performances.Last year of his contract 23m would be good business.

100% agree on Casemiro and Khedira, not sure what battling midfielder we can get though, it would obviously be a dream come true to get Vidal but I'd expect Kroos to be the big midfield signing of the window, we didn't need much in that area..

Definitely a defensive-enough minded mid though next please!

It's the first summer where we will (hopefully) solve all of our pressing issues early and there's still plenty of time for another luxury signing. I am so optimistic. 😀

They dont want to commit to a day and they realise there is an underlying issue with the site / player. Id rather they took their time and got it right than releasing early with bugs

Barkley for me, if he's a first choice starter. Pre-season games may give us a clue to this.
