Manchester City kick-started a summer of restructuring last month by confirming the acquisition of Bacary Sagna from Arsenal on a three-year deal. After failing to agree an improved contract with the Gunners, the 31-year-old will arrive at the Etihad as a free agent and follows in the footsteps of Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri in swapping north London for the blue half of Manchester:

The History

A product of the FC Sens and Auxerre youth academies, Sagna made his debut for the latter back in the 2004-05 campaign. Over the course of three seasons, the right-back made 104 appearances and provided four assists for the Ligue 1 club – voted Auxerre Player of the Year in 2006-07, his displays persuaded Arsene Wenger to fork out £7m for his services in July 2007.

The Frenchman lasted seven years at the Emirates and with little competition for a first-team place, made 284 Premier League appearances for the north London outfit. Sagna’s raids down the right served up five goals and 27 assists and saw him named in the PFA Player of the Year XI on two occasions – 2007-08 and 2010-11 – though his only piece of silverware arrived just last May, when Arsenal defeated Hull City to lift the FA Cup.

On the international stage, Sagna made his debut back in 2007 and has subsequently turned out for his country on 40 occasions, though his fallen down the pecking order in recent times and remains second choice right-back behind Newcastle’s Mathieu Debuchy.

The Prospects

With a first full season at the helm now behind him, Pellegrini is clearly intent on replenishing his options at the back. Already this summer, Costel Pantilimon has moved to Sunderland, Joleon Lescott has joined West Brom, whilst Micah Richards is also set to leave the club under freedom of contract after failing to convince the Chilean he was worthy of a place in the first-team squad.

Sagna’s arrival affords City a proven Premier League player, who is also capable of filling in at centre-half if the need arises. While that may be all good and well for Pellegrini, from a Fantasy perspective it looks to have killed the prospects of both Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta for the season ahead. With Richards either struggling with injury or out of form, the Argentine was named in the first XI in 34 of City’s league matches last term – Sagna was similarly nailed-on at Arsenal, also starting 34 times, and it looks like his acquisition will merely allow Pellegrini the chance to rotate the spot with far more regularity. Indeed, one look at the City left-back berth, where Clichy made 21 starts and Aleksandar Kolarov managed 18, is perhaps indicative as to what we can expect.

With Martin Demichelis approaching 34 years of age and Matija Nastasic plagued with a back problem, it looks likely that Vincent Kompany will be the one City defender we can rely upon unless Pellegrini strengthens further. At the Emirates, though, Wenger tends to rarely rotate his defence – a potential move for Debuchy would bring him immediately onto our radars, though the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker remain strong routes into a backline that conceded just 11 times at home last term.

The recently-released Premier League fixture list has handed Pellegrini a tricky opening few fixtures. Showdowns with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea in the first five Gameweeks suggest that many will steer clear of their defensive assets from the off but even when the schedule clears, Sagna and Zabaleta – with 133 points and 146 points in last term’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game respectively – both look set to be crossed off our Fantasy radars unless injuries allow one of the duo to nail down a regular role.

Realized I posted this in an older thread by mistake Reposting:

So, didn't know where else to post this

Essentially, I'm going to be playing in a draft style fantasy league with 9 other friends (so 10 teams total). The basic rule structure is the same as the fantasy.premierleague.com fantasy apart from:

    - no "bonus points". though multiple goals/assists in a game get a bonus point.
    - 1 pt for 4 interceptions for defenders / 3 interceptions for all others.
    - 1 pt for 4 tackles for defenders / 3 tackles for all others.
    - 5 pts instead of 4 for clean sheets only for goalkeepers
    - 1 pt for 2 blocked shots (happens very rarely, 5-6 points extra for defenders overall)

Essentially, it gives defensive mids a way to earn points, makes good defenders better picks and increases the returns of box to box mids like Yaya Toure or Aaron Ramsey.

I say all this because, I have pick #2 in the draft. So I'll get pick #2 in the draft followed by #19 and #22 pick. Suggestions for who I should get for my first pick? Wanted Ramsey pretty badly but I was debating on avoiding him hoping he might still be available when my next turn comes

Also, any under the radar guys I should hope to pick up later? Was thinking of saving Theo as a late pick (since he would be injured for the first couple of months and isn't likely to get picked). Any advice / thoughts would be appreciated.

Could paste the point totals according to the rules for some of the top players if that helps.

          This, yup.

It also helps guys like Ramsey who track back and tackle as well as contribute forward. Remember - there's no FPL bonus points so the point totals for a guy like Yaya (who was MOTM very often) aren't as huge as they could be.

I can post a few of the point totals according to this game if that helps?

I did add a "big chances created" thing this year where it's a point for each (so high because these big chances were very rare according to the stat system used by Fantrax). They define them as "passes which led to a clear cut scoring opportunity). Apart from Suarez, the highest was 13 (in total across the season).

Here are some of the point totals and points / game:

              Suarez, Luis - LIV 260 7.88
              Yaya Toure - MCI 222 6.34
              Gerrard, Steven - LIV 202 5.94
              Hazard, Eden - CHE 183 5.23
              Giroud, Olivier - ARS 170 4.72
              Coleman, Seamus - EVE 168 4.67
              Howard, Tim - EVE 168 4.54
              Sturridge, Daniel - LIV 167 5.76
              Rooney, Wayne - MUN 164 5.66
              Szczesny, Wojciech - ARS 164 4.43
              Lambert, Rickie - LIV 163 4.41
              Cech, Petr - CHE 160 4.71
              Zabaleta, Pablo - MCI 160 4.57
              Lallana, Adam - LIV 158 4.16
              Baines, Leighton - EVE 155 4.84

I think Pochs extreme pressing style will be very diversive in terms of player performance.

Some will either thrive or flop.

I can't say i'm sure which of those Eriksen will be. Last season he seems to play best when he was freshest and had been rested.

fantrax-played it via here and won the red league-nitin ,declan, etc
last year suarez was absolutely superb-won game on his own

I know you wont like this but the draft part of the game is the exciting bit but not that important overall
in the end I found given the number of swaps you get and the priority given to def clean sheets if you're clever and swap well even less good teams can provide players each week

But sure enough you can customise it like you wish
So your key defenders and scoring midfielders are wild
hazard would still be my pick
lallana might not get the games this year
so I'd weigh in with koscielny-consistent and coleman for same reasons
      goodl luck

for serious everyday action I'd recommend instead comunio.co.uk-which is a massive improvement on fantrax-let me know if you need a league to play in....

well its about small leagues 10-20 people which run throughout year in and out of season,
in each league ever player exists only once
but instead of a draft you each have allocated 15 players by computer and a set amount of cash to bid for players who daily are presented by computer on a transfer list and trade between each other
          it can be customised

That sounds like fun, I might give a whirl!

              Couple of questions though:

              a) How does the computer decide players prices / the initial teams? Seems kinda weird that it preselects a team for you!

              b) Fantrax has a system where you can do an auction with wages etc instead of going the draft route, that would end up being similar correct? It's actually quite cool because you can have a continuous league where you can keep players you may have bought cheaply etc.

a)random-to an approx price-if you join later than others or have a poor hand dealt to you often you negotiate a cash supplement from the boss of the league.I play in about 10 leagues .If you don't like players you have been dealt you put them on the market for computer or other managers to buy off you on a daily basis.
b)you can have a wages thing but i've not played this as it requires all mangers to pay for this and people like playing for free!!
The continuous daily 02.17 am transfer market closure brings dynamism to leagues

My mate POSH has just started a league after the world cup(following on from an ultimate dream team league)-its called apres brazil on the public league registration

Then you'd have to do it from scratch.

I just used FPL as a base model and added in some other metrics to make it a little more balanced. Basically giving defenders/gk/defensive mids some extra scoring chances.

Forwards/Attacking mids still earn the most and can have "big" performances but holding midfield type guys can be a consistent source of smaller points in my version.

in my draft league you could do as many as you want, but there are no auto subs and your squad is small.

Obviously only one of each player available to the league so transfers were much more fun

That's the bit I like...even a max of three or something like that would be a big break from regular FPL...just for the fun.

I agree. I really like the fixed squad and big bench idea. It gives people who call the likes of Ramsay BEFORE they start banging them in a real benefit.

Having so many transfers so frequently nullifies great differential picks.

Same. Can set it up as you want.

Transfers were rare as people had to agree to a deal.

Free Agent pickups used to happen depending on double gameweeks etc.

If he is classified as a mid, it will be promising.
Could play on the wings, on #10 in the 4-4-2 diamond…or the second striker in tougher games.

He was not a regular form the beginning. In fact Jorge Jesus had to took him out from the team and grum him a bit..
But then he was the one who turned Benfica season around.

I think he his a Nani type when he first came to United.
Raw but very strong individually and fast as hell.

I don't recall that. If they did, it wasn't intentional, I'm pretty sure of that.

We have this talk of a late night launch every season but, like Stilicho says, I'd be very surprised if they launch without all hands on deck, just in case. Even if they have some tech/server effort Stateside, I'd lay bets on an late afternoon, early evening launch time.

Potential bargains, depending on price of course!

    Flanagan

Stones - will he be first choice now?

Debuchy - if he's priced as a Newcastle defender.

they do. their squad was not deep enough to compete in the CL and in the EPL

however I feel they need one or two players that have the quality to change a match and pop up with a vital goal or assist out of nowhere. that's something they'll really miss without Suarez

It's particularly good for rotation based on fixture difficulty. Drag the cheap teams together and you can see where blue and red rotate perfectly

H/A is not always the best way since sometimes you might want a keeper away at Burnley v one at home to City but great work Mila, some useful stuff in there

Its great on paper but West Ham got 7 home CS and 7 away CS last season. Season before was 6 home, 5 away. 14 is pretty damn good (Chelsea were top with 18) but they really don't work for home/away rotation.

Hull and Stoke stand out as being good at home defensively and crap away but their H/A rotation is about as bad as it can get. Pairing one of them with Burnley could work.

My thoughts exactly. I wonder if Stoke could offer a 4.5m defender, won't be ShawX or Huth but perhaps Bardsley. Him and Trippier.

Depends on the team. Usually the three Sky airs in Italy on Saturday and at least one on Sunday(4pm one).

3 or 4 at most. Depends really on the games that are on and whether I feel interested in the game at the time 🙂
