Ronald Koeman made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Southampton last week by signing Serbian playmaker Dusan Tadic from Dutch side FC Twente. The 25-year-old arrives at St Mary’s on a four-year for an undisclosed fee and starts a summer of spending as the Saints boss restructures his side following the departure of Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Rickie Lambert:

Discussing the transfer with the Saints official website, Koeman confirmed he hopes Tadic will offer the club a replacement for Lallana and talked up the new boy’s dead-ball abilities ahead of the new campaign:

“We’re very happy that Tadic is coming in. He’s a great player. He’s 25 and he has a great future, and I think he can now reach the level that we need and a player needs to be at in the Premier League. When we lost a great player in [Adam] Lallana, we were looking for a similar player in that position, and we’ve found it…He is a technically good player – he keeps the ball and he has a fantastic left [foot] at corner kicks, free kicks and penalties. These kinds of players are very important in the team for assists and goals. As a manager you look to players who will score between ten and 15 goals.”

The History

Tadic joined the youth ranks of hometown team AIK Bačka Topola before signing for FK Vojvodina in 2006. Handed his debut for the club as an 18-year-old, the midfielder racked up 29 goals and 17 assists over 107 league appearances before making his way to Dutch side FC Groningen in the summer of 2010.

In two seasons with the Eredivisie outfit, Tadic’s creativity served up 28 assists over 68 appearances and, with 14 goals also to his name, he moved to FC Twente for the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Once again, the Serbian lasted just two seasons at his new club but his statistics will certainly bring Fantasy managers his way – 12 goals and 15 assists in his first season was followed by 16 goals and 14 assists last time round as he led his side to an impressive third placed finish.

On the international stage, the playmaker made his debut for Serbia back in 2008 and has resultantly featured on 25 occasions for his country, finding the net five times.

The Prospects

Having lost their manager and three key players over the summer, Fantasy faith is understandably a little low in Southampton right now. Koeman has wasted little time in addressing Lallana’s departure to Liverpool, though, with the arrival of Tadic and, subsequently, Graziano Pelle, a real shot in the arm for the St Mary’s outfit – speaking to the club’s official website, the new boy admitted that the Dutchman’s installation was a key factor in his decision:

“I watched a lot of [Southampton’s] games last season and saw that the club plays really nice football which will suit me because I like to play in the same way. The manager obviously knows me from the Dutch league so, when he called me and told me his plan, it was an easy decision to make. He is a really good coach and you can always expect his teams to play well because he is leading them and because he is so good tactically. I am really excited to start playing for the club.”

A deeper examination of the 2013/14 data will buoy both Saints fans and Fantasy managers alike, though. In his final year in the Dutch flight, Tadic averaged four key passes per game, which equates to a total of 133 chances created for team-mates – 47 more than any player in the Erdivisie, 41 more than any Premier League player and just slightly less than double Lallana’s 68. It’s not just his creativity that catches the eye, though. The Serbian fired 92 attempts on goal last term – only Philippe Coutinho (94) managed more in the English top-flight, whilst Lallana, in spite of what was an excellent breakout season, mustered 70 by comparison.

Granted, the English top-flight is a definite step up in difficulty but the versatile Tadic, who can play wide left or centrally, will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Luis Suarez and Wilfried Bony, who have both made a similar transition look seamless. The signs suggest Tadic will be at the heart of the Saints’ attacking endeavours and if, as Koeman states, he is handed set-pieces and corners (spot-kicks may be debatable with Pelle around), his Fantasy fortunes will take a significant rise in many managers’ estimations. Coming in at 6.7 in the Sky Sports Fantasy game, Tadic looks poised for considerable Fantasy attention if he is placed in the mid-priced bracket across the rest of the Fantasy games.

Looking at the opening schedules, the 2014/15 Premier League fixture list has smiled kindly on Southampton. Koeman’s men face just one of last season’s top five in the opening 12 Gameweeks – an opening day trip to Anfield – and with home games against West Brom, Newcastle, QPR, Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester supplemented by trips to the likes of West Ham, Swansea, Hull and Villa, investment in the Saints main men looks a canny tactic. If Tadic can settle quickly and bring his Eredivise form to the English top-flight, we may well have a real Fantasy prospect on our hands.

i reckon it will be a while......the 2013/14 game is still live. As i recall in previous seasons, the prior season and stats were erased a while before the game started. Also i recall a message "the game is currently being updated" (or something to that effect), shortly after that, the game went live.

This whole 4am business started about 2 years ago, i am sorry as i might be one of the culprits who might have contributed to the initial rumor back then! 😉

I think you're right CF. I too remember there being a "currently being updated" notice. As for the 4am thing, there is literally no reason for this to be true unless the developers are in a different time zone. Why launch anything when your main target audience is in bed?

Possibly, if there's a gem among the cheap strikers. But more than likely you'll be paying more than you would for a cheap defensive rotation, and more risk too.

Very rarely works out. Attacking points from cheaper players are a lot harder to predict than defensive points and you'll frequently be frustrated by points on your bench.

In theory, it seems 'fine' however, in practice it's a wasteful & tricky proposition.

Its wasteful because having £6/7 mil consistently sitting on the bench every week isn't the best allocation of funds especially at the beginning of the year when cash is tight.

Also, trying to figure out which of the two to start each week becomes tough & points are wasted sitting on the bench.

I thought this worked out pretty well in the last half of last season (although it's my only season and I have no comparison)

Cabaye, Ramsey, Lallana, Eriksen, and Mirallas were all good mid-price alternatives who could score decent. I know they didn't all fire at the same time, but January was a great month for me with Lallana, Eriksen and Cabaye all giving great returns. Having these allowed for two big hitters up front and a mid-price third striker. I felt it gave me great flexibility as I basically could rotate my striker with all three of them and it also provided for good coverage in case one of the mids didn't start(who doesn't love the thought of having Dzeko/Bony coming off the bench?)

Time for a green post regarding formations

Clearly 343 has been the default option for most on this site l and has generally worked fairly well.
However last season a few cracks appeared in tried and and trusted formation
The change in bonus system led many to successfully trial 442 or even 532

The season before when we had the power five in midfield a 352 was very effective .

this season it is looking like we will once again have many good midfield options
Fabregas Mata Shurle Hazard Yaya Ramsay Walccott lallana and plent of new mids

The way it's shaping up even the occasional 451 could be an option (is that legal)

Last season many good fantasy players had their worst season for many years, was this due to a refusal to move away from 343 , even though there was a shift in points towards defence?

Personally I'm strongly considering setting my team up for a 442 / 352 season Mids looking better than last season , and central defenders looking good too

    What are your plans?

I agree completely Trigg. I've not given it massive thought just yet, but I'm not overly enthused when I think of a front three. Mids on the other hand...

      I';ll be leaning toward a 3-5-2 or possibly 4-4-2.

Think mids seem a good idea except the bonus points system didn't reward assists as well last year. 2 strong defenders, one mid price then rotating, 2 power mids, one midprice then rotating and 2 power forwards and a cheapie is my plan for now but im sure itll all go out the window when i start tinkering...

i've seen many people move away from 343 only to come back to it. countless times i've seen people on here wish they had a 4th striker spot, though i've never seen the wish for another mid or defender spot

but yes, there's a possibility that another formation could work well. but just be prepared to shift back to 343 when midfield points seem to dry up and/or when there's 3 or more strikers that are racking up the points

I think the flexibility to be able to switch from one formation to another with just 1-2 transfers can be crucial

For me it's a risk v reward thing. Defenders are cheap and will garner you consistent points. Strikers are expensive but have the potential to explode along with the relative safety net of being most likely to score.

Mids is where the real struggle lies. They're often inconsistent, pricier than defenders and less likely to bag a few goals than the striker. If playing 5 mids, the likelihood of some of your players being inconsistent increases a lot. Some great options in midfield this year though, so will be very interesting.

Will probably look at 442 early doors, providing the allocation of Bonus stays the same. Or 433. Let's see what the prices are like. One marquee striker plus two mid-price options can work.

I don't necessarily agree with your comment that 343 led to a lit of seasoned players scoring poorly last year, I think that was more linked to players such as Yaya and Ramsey scoring exceptionally well and people's failure to jump aboard immediately.

goal scoring mids are fine, the ones who rely on assists seem to struggle a bit for baps.

GK Strategy for the new season:

    1) One big hitter (6+) and a 4m cheapie
    2) One mid price (5-5.5) and a 4m cheapie
    3) Two rotating cheapies (4.5-5)

What are you thinking of going with and why?

I'll try to go no higher than 5.0.

The difference in points between the highest and lowest first choice keepers is hardly anything. I'll be going with a cheap reliable keeper, and only changing on a wildcard to suit form and fixtures.

Depends on who's available in those price ranges, but 4.5s are always the best value.

Might start with DDG/McGregor and a 4.0 then swap to the GKs of choice on my WC.

I usually do it in about GW8 (2nd int break), but I'm gonna go earlier unless I start ridiculously well.

I think that's wise. I've wildcarded in GW 3 or 4 in both of the seasons I've played.

I like the rotation option the 2 cheapies give as well as saving on a bit of cash. Having a problem with Paypal so haven't accessed the season ticker yet, so don't know if I may go all out on a mid or big hitter.

Might go Begovic plus the cheapest one out there and play Bego every week. Not sure Swans will keep many clean sheets so the STK SWA partnership doesn't appeal that much. Palace WHM might work but with WHM there's a decent chance they will do well defensively away from home as well.

      Let's hope a Hart/Sorensen or Krul/Vorm gold mine emerges this season 🙂
