Ronald Koeman moved into the transfer for the second time last week by acquiring striker Graziano Pelle from former club Feyenoord on a three-year contract. The 28-year-old teams up with the Dutchman for the third time in his career, having also worked under his guidance at AZ Alkmaar, and his arrival hands the Saints a very prolific replacement for the departed Rickie Lambert:

Discussing his move with the club’s official site, Pelle admitted he didn’t need persuading to join the Koeman revolution for the season ahead:

“I had some teams interested in me, but this is going to be the best choice for me because the club wants to keep improving every year. The talks between us were only short in terms of how long it took to convince each other. I was pretty sure that, for me, this would be a great step. [Ronald] Koeman and I worked together for two amazing years at Feyenoord, and I hope that it will be the same here.”

The History

A product of the Lecce youth system, the Italian made his debut in back in January 2004. Pelle was unable to make any impact, though, and managed just 12 goalless appearances over three years at the club – loaned out to lower league Catania on three occasions over that period, he notched 16 times in 69 appearances.

In July 2007, Pelle left his native country to sign for Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar. Spending four years in the Eredivisie, he struggled to make any real impact and netted only 14 times in 78 league outings before moving back to Italy with Parma. His toils continued, with a single goal in 12 appearances prompting loan stints at Sampdoria (four goals in 16 league games) and a first year under Koeman at Feyenoord, where he served up an excellent 29 goals and nine assists in 33 matches over 2012/13.

Midway through that loan spell with Feyenoord, Pelle signed a four-year deal with the Dutch outfit and officially joined on a permanent deal in the summer of 2013. Once again, he served up the goals for Koeman’s side, with 26 goals and six assists in 33 appearances across all competitions – indeed, over his two years with Feyenoord, an average of 0.88 goals per game was third around Europe, with only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo more prolific.

The Prospects

Earlier in the summer, the doubters were circling after Southampton lost their former manager and three key players but Koeman’s knowledge of the Dutch top-flight has quickly pacified Saints fans and Fantasy managers alike.

The acquisition of playmaker Dusan Tadic (16 goals and 14 assists last season) in addition to Pelle certainly suggests that Koeman has added real quality to the squad and more than atoned for the departure of Lallana and Lambert. Discussing his new forward with the club’s official website, the Dutchman summed up Pelle’s best qualities:

“I had Graziano in my team for my last two years at Feyenoord. He scored a lot of goals – more than 50 in two seasons – and they brought a lot of points to the club. Goals mean points, and we needed a good player in that position after Rickie Lambert left. In terms of his qualities, he’s a tall striker with a lot of movement and he’s fast. He’s a player who gives confidence to the team because he keeps the ball, and he’s very dangerous in front of goal. He’s almost 29 years old, so he brings a little bit of experience to a young team.”

Although the rebuilding is coming along nicely, the Saints new boys may need time to acclimatise to their new environment. Luckily, the transition has been made easier by a superb opening schedule which many may find hard to resist as we start to assemble our squads for the season ahead. Koeman’s side face just two of last term’s top eight in their opening 12 fixtures, with their first six home games seeing West Brom, Newcastle, QPR, Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester all make their way to St Mary’s.

Coming in at just 7.5 in FPL and 7.4 in the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game, Pelle has been reasonably priced for the campaign ahead. An eighth place finish last time around under Mauricio Pochettino – albeit impressive – ensures the club have no European fixtures to contend with, making rotation unnecessary and first-team starts assured. Furthermore, Lambert’s departure should ensure the Italian is handed spot-kicks and if he can even come close to replicating his previous displays under Koeman, that opening run of matches has the potential to richly reward those willing to invest.

Would you want to have an Aston Villa defender in your team (maybe Vlaar, 4.5) assuming I don't have a WBA defender?

I was looking forward to AVL/WBA pair of defenders at 9.0, but a little research made me realise how horribly bad and thin the West Brom squad is, the serious relegation contenders they are .

where has the Ron Vlaar to MAN Utd rumour come from? Is it this quote from Rob Witsche?

"Everybody will be looking at Dutch players like (Arjen) Robben, (Wesley) Sneijder who is a great player, and (Ron) Vlaar, who did a marvellous job at the World Cup," (Sky)

because if he thinks Robben will go to Man Utd he's deluded in my opinion...so I'm not attaching too much weight to his opinions

or is there some other source?

It's not that United dont have decent centre backs, it's that they dont have experience at the back. Heck Jonny Evans is their most experienced defender at the minute.

I think people have gotten too carried away with Vlaar. Yes he had a good WC coupled with a rock of a display vs Argentina but thats such a small sample space to look at, especially given the fact it was virtually 5 at the back. Almost every one in that defence looked half decent, Van Gaal even got away with playing Kuyt in there for God Sake 😉
Wouldn't want him at Utd especially at his age.

@Dribbler No its all speculations, I haven't seen one valid source confirming interest.

          Sanchez isn't a punt IMHO.

Fair points. Pelle is in my team as one of my punts.
I think Sanchez can be classified as a punt, he is untested in the PL and we dont really know where he will fit into the system. hopefully up front as he is in my team also.

well it depends what you mean by a risk?

players who MIGHT not be regular first-teamers = none DEFINITELY so you won't find me picking an Alex Bruce here or a Michael Duff there

players coming from overseas? well we all know Sanchez is a cracking player and I might well get him but remember what happened to Ozil last year...but Pelle and Tadic are riskier...remember Van Wolf and Altidore...check their scoring records before they came to England...there is a long list of Premier League failures who were hotly tipped on this site

remember this is a competition...it's me v's you...if I pick 15 popular players in a standard formation and then I start badly it doesn't matter too much because my rivals will have many of the same players...if you take some risks and you start badly then you'll never catch me up...or to phrase it more carefully...you might catch ME up if I mess up but you won't catch up most of the good players who start better than you

Yeah some good points in there and some I think I have been guilty of in the past. You definitely don't want to be chasing and making your decisions based on the need for differentials.

At the moment I think I am happy to have Pelle and Sanchez in there as my 'punts' and fill the rest with regular starters and known scorers.

Definitely not putting in anyone who isn't a 100% starter. Although we will know more after pre-season.

Not convinced with Hazard this season. I think I will avoid for the time being.

I like a good punt me, but they're not the riskiest of punts I think. Sanchez, De Jong, Costa, Fabregas(even though he is a proven FPL scorer). Don't really count bench fodder as punts but have Albrighton, Duff and Wisdom (with hope of a move) at the mo. Also have Verm pending a move to Utd, Dzeko who may be at risk or rotation and will see how Debuchy does at Arsenal. After writing that out, I guess I am pretty punty.

early days but this looks a good start to me. looking at WC GW4.

    Green/Krul
    Debuchy/Rafael/Vlaar/Baird/Duff
    Sanchez/Hazard/Fabregas/Siggurdson/Albrighton
    Rooney/Dzeko/Bony

At first glance the defence looks weak but Debuchy and Utd can play each of the first 3 weeks. Baird/Wisdom if he signs starts GW1 with SUN then Vlaar comes in with NEW, HUL.

Assuming Siggy goes to swans or palace.

as RVP and kun get eased in i like this frontline to start with.

If he plays, which isnt guaranteed, i expect him to play in a box to box role in the double pivot. Dont think he will be on the wing. He is also horrendous in front of goal.

      Courtois and Shaw

      DDG and Cahill

Both combos are the same price. Asked yesterday on which people prefer and the majority went with DDG/Cahill.

That being said, Shaw should rack up the bonus points with left flank dribbles and assist potential. I feel that would be more consistant than Cahill's goal threat from set pieces. Hmm

I am at the moment but I'm prepared to be proved wrong...With a balance like I have (Shelvey is the key)....Sanchez > Ramsey..Hazard > Fabregas is easy to do..spread the money around and it becomes harder to do it the other way around in the early weeks.

The 7.5 mid is an easy way into Tadic, De Jong Eriksen if the transfers are done right as well.

He's been pretty good for Brighton, but despite a decent scoring record he misses a hell of a lot of chances. I don't think he's worth 7 million and I don't think he's going to shine in the PL.

Yeah your last sentence is their natural positions.

Basically Ward shifted to LB when Parr/Moxey were injured/out of form and Mariappa came in at RB and it's stayed that way since. Ward did a decent job filling in at CM for a few matches too.

Not sure mate, they've got Ledley (a midfielder) who can play as a LB if Ward happened to get injured or moved to RB. It looks as tough the back four will be Mariappa - Dann - Delaney - Ward anyway. If Caulker chooses Palace over QPR then apparently Delaney will shift to Mariappa's RB position and Caulker will be one of their CBs.
