After casting an eye over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders over the last few days, our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List moves further up the park. This time around, we assess the cut-price midfield options for the upcoming season:

At first impression, there seems to be few genuine contenders in the 4.5 – 5.0 midfield price range. As pre-season friendlies progress, though, we should gradually be afforded a better idea as to how teams are shaping up – whilst the pickings are presently slim, with few standout attacking options currently available, there are, nonetheless, a few cheap rotation pairings on offer:

Coming in at 5.0, Villa duo Fabian Delph and Ashley Westwood both served notice of their eye for goal by finding the net on three occasions last term. Granted, that’s hardly prolific form but if they can kick on from last season’s exploits, they may offer us a viable cut-price option in the centre of the park. Paul Lambert’s side rotate home/away perfectly with West Brom and with Graham Dorrans also setting you back 5.0 for the Baggies, the midlands clubs may come into consideration if they can improve upon last term’s disappointing form.

For Burnley, Michael Kightly (five goals and six assists) and Scott Arfield (eight strikes and a trio of assists) seem the standout options at 5.0 apiece, though with highly-rated right-back Kieran Trippier at the same price, many may overlook The Clarets in the centre of the park. As mentioned in our rotation article, Sean Dyche’s side alternate home/away with Hull over the entire 38 Gameweeks but whilst Tigers duo Robbie Brady and Ahmed Elmohamady also set you back 5.0, the arrival of Robert Snodgrass and Tom Ince is likely to see our attentions focussed on the mid-price bracket for Steve Bruce’ charges.

Elsewhere amongst the promoted sides, Leicester new boy Marc Albrighton has already found his way into a number of Fantasy squads after being priced at 4.5. A peripheral figure at former club Villa, the wide man’s delivery could be key to The Foxes’ chances in the final third and, with few options at that price currently catching the eye, he could become an increasingly popular pick if he nails down a role on the flank for Nigel Pearson’s Championship winners. Winter signing Riyad Mahrez chipped in with three goals and five assists in just 19 appearances in the Championship last term – at 5.0, he’s costlier than Albrighton and will need to be monitored over the upcoming friendlies.

As mentioned previously, Southampton dovetail perfectly with The Foxes over the 38 Gameweeks and could present us with a couple of legitimate options. Analysis of the Player Price List shows that Steven Davis is the only current budget midfielder to have exceeded 100 points in the campaign gone by. The 5.0-priced man served up two goals and seven assists over 34 appearances for the St Mary’s outfit but it’s yet to be seen whether he’ll retain his starting berth under new boss Ronald Koeman – many are hoping the Dutchman hands the similarly-priced James Ward-Prowse a chance to nail down a spot in his XI after the youngster started 16 times in 2013/14.

Liverpool’s Oussama Assaidi comes in at 5.0. The winger’s chances of breaking into the Reds’ first-team look slim-to-none but with Mark Hughes still keen after a relatively successful loan spell at Stoke last season, a move to the Britannia could bring Assaidi into consideration ahead of a schedule which pits the Potters against just three of last term’s top eight in the first 12 Gameweeks. Swansea alternate with Hughes’ side over the entire season and if Ki Sung-yeung (5.0) can nail down a starting berth upon his return to the Liberty, pairing him and Assaidi may yet be an option. Stoke’s Stephen Ireland also sets you back just 5.0 and started seven of the last eight games he was available for last season – there’s question marks as to whether he can retain the role in “the hole” as Hughes strengthens in his second season at the helm, though.

Newcastle’s new boy Jack Colback may be one to consider. Despite moving to St James’ Park from neighbours Sunderland, the 5.0 midfielder remains under the radar due to the arrival of Siem de Jong and Remy Cabella but, with three goals and a trio of assists in 28 starts for the Black Cats last term, Colback may be a solid, if somewhat unspectacular, option amongst Alan Pardew’s first XI.

Unsurprisingly, QPR’s main options are placed in the budget bracket after the club scored just 60 times in 46 league matches in the Championship. David Hoilett was the most prolific R’s midfielder last time around with four goals and five assists over 38 appearances and, like Joey Barton (three goals, three assists) comes in at 5.0 – both offer plenty of top-flight experience which suggests they could continue in the starting XI for next term, though with Harry Redknapp expected to strengthen, none of the current crop really stand out.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino is expected to shake up the Tottenham midfield. Both Tom Carroll and Nabil Bentaleb are available for just 4.5, though it’s far from certain that either will be in the South American’s first-team plans, given the number of midfielders at his disposal. Nonetheless, Pochettino showed at Southampton last year that he’s not afraid to hand youth a chance and there remains a hope that one, or both, could potentially be on the cusp of a breakout season ahead for the north London outfit.

I had posted a draft team on the opening day, and after 6-7 days of tinkering, I think I'm slowly arriving to what will be my final team.

So Klose, yet so Fer 2.0

    de Gea, Myhill,
    Cahill, Debuchy, Chambers, Mariappa, Bruce,
    Sanchez, Silva, Sigurdsson, Arnautovic, Albrighton,
    van Persie, Costa, Jelavic.

    * Chose a de Gea/Myhill combo, because Krul/Mannone rotation didn't impress me as much, and I expect de Gea to keep a fair amount of clean sheets, at least in the first ten weeks. Also, no United defender at 5.5 or less impresses me yet.

    * I want a Chelsea defender and as of now, Cahill seems the safest bet. If you could let me know more on this? And err, I was anyway going to choose an Arsenal defender, and I fancy Debuchy to play more games than Gibbs, that's it.

    * The three budget defenders are just up for grabs for now. I'd honestly choose two 4.5 and a 4.0 defender. I'm not yet too sure about Mariappa and Chambers starting, just chose them because of their teams. Pre-season would probably tell us more. For the 4.0 defender, I will go the Wisdom way once he joins WBA.

    * My midfield: Sanchez is worth the 1.5 over Ramsey, Silva is an amazing player as long as he's fit, Sigurdsson will be a lock at Swansea as Hernandez is leaving, Arnautovic because he's Stoke's only decent attacking outlet, Albrighton as the fifth mid because everyone's having him.

    * My strikers, that's where I'm still a little confused, probably pre-season will help me a little more. RVP is worth 12.5 in a van Gaal team, but will he hit the ground running? Well, since I'll anyway have an United attacker, I might just do RVP ➡ Rooney, and Jelavic ➡ Giroud, if pre-season suggests so. As of Costa, I'm pretty confident that he will be a brilliant fit in the Chelsea cog.

Now, could you please tell me more about it? Any opinion will be very helpful.

Good work Saniul I'm in around the same thinking.
      Ddg
      Deb/Cahill/4.5/4.5/4
      My mid currently :
Haz/ram/Erik/Siggy ram allows me Erik, but I would like Sanchez.
Up top I really want Bony he's class and I've gone for Rooney over Rvp right now (subject to change)
      Rooney/Dzeko/Bony

Fairly happy but it's work in progress.

I'm on my 137th variation so far but hopefully getting there like you.

RVP makes sense but only because LVG is there to massage his monstrous ego - that said I don't care as long as he bangs in the goals as per his first season.

I'm not a big fan of Costa - he's no Drogba and given the way Chelsea play it's one of their 97 midfielders who'll get the points rather than their striker. Jelavic has yet to convince me as well - he wasn't able to hit a barn let alone a barn door last season at Everton and he still missed way too many chances at Hull. I quite like the look of Pelle at Soton and Remy at Lpool myself.

Mariappa and Cahill are both good shouts but only if they play. I think they probably will but this season I think rotation is going to be even worse than last so getting a full XI out each week will be a challenge. The Arsenal defence were as mean as Chelsea and Kosc and Mert are nailed on at the moment. At Palace Dann, Delaney or Ward seem to be more likely starters for the moment so worth the extra .5m.

1). Goalies - not ideal. We have to see how MUN line up. Mine: Green, Speroni
2). Defence - good, but I really don't like Debuchy at this time
3). Midfield. Here is where we diverge. I think that it's awful - all fart and no shit.
4). Similar. But it could work.

I've had an issue with rotating goalies, always tend to pick the wrong one. But I see your point.

Would you rather get Gibbs as your 5.5 Arsenal defender?

Yeah, I think we need to agree to disagree on the midfield, I pretty much like it myself. 😉

It's called "The Irish Contingent" there is only 1 rule to join this league,
1 - You must be Irish.

Rooney Bony Giroud w Sanchez looks very tempting.

Altho the safe option in my opinion would be the

Rooney Sturridge Giroud w/o Sanchez to start with and see how it goes.

    Whats peoples thoughts:

    De Gea/Myhill
    Debuchy, Ward, Cameron, Chester, Wisdom
Yaya Touré, Ramsey, Davis, Snodgrass, Arnautovic
    Rooney, Sturridge, Pellè

Wisdom can become Coloccini if he doesn't move
    Chester for the early fixtures
Cameron i consider nailed (unless pre season/Hughes says different)
Yaya because i'm too scared not to have him (can always switch to Sanchez/Hazard/Silva)
Davis as the article says hes the only 5.0 with over 100 points
Snodgrass & Arnie for the early fixtures
Rooney for the great value (don't rate RVP currently)
Sturridge because i think he will be top scorer this season (if he stays fit)
Pelle for a punt on fixtures and pens hopefully

this, 50 goals in 57 games tells you he cant be terrible. Especially playing for the same manager who will most likely play his team in a way that he is used to.. Add to that Saints fixtures and he becomes a good, calculated pick imo.

    Krul - Mannone
    Shaw - Ward - Cameron - Demel - Debuchy
Fabregas- Eriksen - Herrera - Shelvey - Tiote
    Sturridge - Rooney - Adebayor

Could swap Sturridge for Costa for opening few weeks. Also not happy about Herrera and Rooney as I don't know what position they will play.

Yeah I was wondering that about Sanchez joining, but if Sanchez plays out wide it wouldn't affect him, and if he plays up front it shouldn't affect him, no?

Quite a lot of top performers have performed well a second, and in a lot of cases, a further amount of seasons - Bale, Fabregas, RVP, Baines, Gerrard, Silva, Suarez. Ok, I'm naming the obvious but there's plenty more who've done well two seasons running.

Just curious to know why you think Ramsey's case might be different?

You'd want to know more about Huth, has been on and off since last season.
You tried to go for cover in midfield. Sanchez and Hazard are probably better picks than Ramsey and Fabregas, but you'd need to cut a premium midfielder spot for that.

      6.5/10.

        Thanks for the advice.

*I can always change Huth to Pieters, depending on pre season

*Didn't try to go for 'cover', don't believe in that term anyways. Both Ramsey and Fabregas are good options imo, but can't find the extra cash to upgrade either of them. Would love to do that though, especially Fabregas to Hazard
