Moving Target – Mathieu Debuchy

After opening their summer spending spree with the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal continued to strengthen for the season ahead by snapping up Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle. The right-back arrives on a long-term deal and hands the Gunners a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who left for champions Manchester City under freedom of contract:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Arsene Wenger
revealed that the Frenchman was his main target to take over from the departed Sagna and underlined the new boy’s attacking potential as key:

“We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal Football Club. He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France. He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us. The obvious replacement for Sagna was Debuchy. He knows what to expect and that’s of course a huge advantage. Debuchy is very good going forward, is very quick in transition. He is sharp in his marking, good with interceptions and quick to go from defence to attack. You feel he always has the desire to go forward, so I believe he will be perfectly suited to our style in that aspect.”

The History

A product of the Lille youth academy in his native France, the 28-year-old made his debut back in the 2003/04 season. Over the course of a decade, Debuchy cemented his spot as a regular at right-back and played a total of 289 times across all competitions, with his threat down the flank serving up 18 goals and 16 assists. A habit for incurring the referee’s wrath was obvious back in Ligue 1, though; Debuchy receiving 57 yellow cards and was dismissed on five occasions before making his way to Newcastle in January 2013.

The Frenchman made 14 league appearances for the Magpies in his debut campaign but failed to deliver any attacking returns for Alan Pardew’s side. Last term, though, he stepped up in the final third and managed a goal and four assists in 29 league games – again, though, his disciplinary record was a cause for concern, with 12 yellows and a couple of dismissals in 46 matches across all competitions for the Tyneside team.

On the international stage, Debuchy has scored twice in 25 appearances for France and, as evidenced by the recent World Cup, has edged past Sagna as Didier Deschamps’ first-choice right-back.

The Prospects

The reported £12m deal certainly bodes well for Debuchy’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead. A look at the statistics shows that Wenger rarely rotated at right-back and centre-half – Sagna, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker appeared in the first XI on 32+ occasions – compared to the uncertainty on the left which saw Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal handed 24 and 13 starts respectively.

After serving up 17 clean sheets in 2013/14 (11 at home and six on the road), Wenger’s backline was second only to Chelsea (18) for shut-outs, conceding a mere 11 times in front of their own fans. Granted, their form on the road against title contenders (leaking 17 goals on their travels to Chelsea, Liverpool and City) may persuade us to bench their main assets for tougher trips but, having started the Fantasy games as a Newcastle player, Debuchy’s kinder price tag strengthens his appeal.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, the right-back is 0.5 cheaper than Mertesacker and Koscielny in the former game – persuading many to snap him up in the hope that Wenger’s side can replicate last year’s resilience.

It’s not just defensive potential that brings Debuchy onto our radars, though. In the season gone by, the Frenchman was third for shots (35) and attempts on target (12) amongst defenders despite starting only 28 matches, whilst a comparison with Sagna also reflects his promise; Debuchy produced an attempt on goal every 74.7 minutes to Sagna’s 201.3, whilst he was also quicker for creating chances by 113.6 minutes to 153.4.

Whilst showdowns against Everton, City, Spurs and Chelsea in the first seven Gameweeks hand Wenger’s side a mixed opening schedule, Debuchy’s points potential at both ends of the pitch could offset any lack of defensive returns and persuade many that he’s worth the early investment.

Nope, I've been trying to watch as many vids of him as I can and he looks well suited to the Prem. I also think that Chelsea have got a formidable squad with which to challenge for the league. I'm expecting 15-20 goals from him this season and a handful of assists too.

Bit worried about his discipline though, can see plenty of yellows and some reds

Unless Chelsea change the way they're set up then I don't see any striker being prolific there. Costa is well suited to the role of bullying defences, making space, bringing others into play and taking a chance when he gets it. I reckon around 15 goals, it's the number of assists which could be interesting and nudge him into the 'worth a punt' territory in my view. I'll be avoiding to start with.

Meh, with the way Newcastle are structured currently there's little scope for an ambitious manager to be there - at least Pardew being there long term offers a consistent figure to moan at.

Sort it by difficulty for the first 4 fixtures and they're 7th worst.. I prefer to look at the short term in FPL, especially at the start as its so unpredictable and everything could change, no point looking further than 10 weeks into the future.

Is Debuchy's attaching threat worth it over his card potential?

    Probably not then.

Moving to Arsenal almost certainly raises his attacking output and lowers his need to make desperate tackles though.

But it is the main point about him - some weeks he'll have big hauls and some weeks he'll hit minus marks.

Already have Dzeko, so don't want Silva right now. Mata is a dodgy pick and will be interesting to see him under LVG. What I'm considering is to pick Eriksen + Arnie over Tadic and De Jong

I think Eriksen could be great value this year.

Yea neither am I. I have front line of Rooney-Giroud-Dzeko as well as I feel this gives decent balance with a mid of Sanchez Hazard Eriksen Siggurdson.

But am tempted to downgrade Giroud, and upgrade Siggy to Mata. The cheap striker then should have the benefit of decent fixtures to fall back on hopefully, while giving me another big hitter in midfield.

Back to your question - I think Eriksen offers fantastic value at his price. Arnie i'm not sold.

Like to draw your attention to http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/07/21/fpl-201314-and-201415-bonus-comparison/

"Most attacking midfielders are better off under the new system, especially wingers. Similarly to the full-backs the additional points for successful dribbles helps to give the prolific dribblers the boost in games where they are consistently skinning their opponent. It’s also likely that many of these values are understated due to the non-inclusion of big chances created. This is particularly applicable to the set-piece maestros like Eriksen and Gerrard, whose free kick deliveries are a constant source of big chances for those on the end of them."

            *Agreed on the balance.

*There are question marks still waiting to be answered for Mata under LVG! No one has a clue about his position

*Yes I read that, but bear in mind Tadic and De Jong will be on direct FK's and pens too. But overall I agree, it is better off if I go with safe options at the start 🙂

just go with the safe guys mate. or just base it off ownership. it's a toss up really. they all have decent fixtures...tadic and de jong are just unproven that's all. think both of them in your team is abit risky, but like they say...high risk high reward.

as a United fan, I don't see Mata playing anywhere except being a central AM or #10 - it is clear to us that he's useless on the wings (doesn't have the attributes at all), so why won't be clear to LVG?

Sometimes, it's best to take a step back away from FFS fears and just think about it logically. You read it here first, Mata will be AM or #10.

              Or just benched completely 🙂

Thanks I'm counting on you then. What does that mean for Rooney though? Are you convinced LVG will adopt the same 3 5 2 as he did for the Netherlands with Rooney playing the Robben Role and Mata playing Sneijder's? 😀

hahah don't blame me if it falls apart!

I think we need to look at this objectively - United's 3 best attacking players are RVP Rooney Mata. He will find a system that plays to their strengths. what's the point of sticking Rooney or Mata on the wings when it is to the detriment of the team? Moyes did that and suffered. Mata was a different player centrally vs on the left, same for Rooney.

From what i've read, LVG believes in attacking football but not in terms of possession but like a machine (look at Holland WC). The ball moves faster than the player, so yea his style is quick circulation of the ball. I don't think they will adopt very static positions, there will be alot of interchanging to create space for each other - something Rooney Mata and RVP are very very very good at doing.

I'm not going to second guess what formations LVG will play. I believe Rooney and Mata will play pivotal roles for Manchester United. And there is no doubt United will want to start the season on a high

    Krul / Mannone
    Cresswell / Cameron / Davies / Mariappa / Taylor
Hazard / Eriksen / De Jong / Tadic / Albrighton
    RVP / Giroud / Remy (Bony GW2)

Ok so there seems to be about 9 mid-bracket mids that people have been choosing in their RMTs. Lets try figure out who's most popular..

Pick any 2 mids from these nine for a combined total of 14.5

    1) Eriksen --- 8.0
    2) Tadic ------ 7.5
    3) Mirallas ----- 7.5
    4) Schurrle ----- 7.5
    5) S.De Jong ----- 7.0
    6) Arnautovic ----- 6.5
    7) Puncheon ----- 6.0
    8) Snodgrass ----- 6.0
    9) Sigurdsson ----- 6.0

At the moment I'm leaning towards Tadic(7.5) and De Jong(7.0).

    Thanks guys 🙂

Eriksen and Arnautovic without any doubt. Mirallas, Snodgrass and Schurrle rotation prone, De Jong won't be that effective with Cabella, he was a great pick until Riviere was signed because now he won't be a striker, while Puncheon and Sigurdsson are just too weak.

Siggy will have to adapt to Pulis' style of defensive high pressure play, something that Puncheon is already excelling at, I know Siggy impressed back when he first came to the prem but this could be a completely different team for him to play in.

Quite a few candidates for those opting for a cheap-mid priced 4th midfielder this season.

Brady, Shelvey, Arnie, Snodgrass and De Jong in particular all could be great shouts, however since I can't decide on one I'll be burying myself in the sand with Ramsey and truck load of cheap defenders! 🙂

Wisdom in WBA done deal. So he should be fighting with Chris Baird to be the right-back and Baird also may play as defensive midfielder. Anyone thought about gambling on both of them at @4.00 and rotate them because one of them (sometimes they may both start) will always play.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Wildcard planning

Every year I say I'll save my wildcard, every year I use it by gwk 8 at the latest. Using a wildcard early, especially during an international break in autumn can be rewarding but so too can saving it to take advantage of late double gameweeks.

When do you plan to use your wildcard?

I'll reassess after 3 gameweeks. There's a 2 week international break coinciding with the end of the transfer window, so that'll be massively tempting, but it will depend on how disastrous my initial team's punts turn out.

I found not using my WC early for the first time last season had nothing to do with planning and everything to do with simply not hitting the button when every international break this place is running amok with RMWCTs

Got 195 points when I used my last-season WC... seemed like a good return though not sure I'll repeat that. Was my one shining week of the season.

Swore I'd use mine late last season. Took a lot of hits fixing a terrible team early. People scoffed at my massive hits and terrible rank (it was a sad story... sniffs).

Then... made a good move up into December... but then got busy with work mid-season and had my typical fall-off when normal life occupies too much time BUT...

I did still play my WC late for the late-season DGW and had a team that had the 7th best score worldwide... so I'll do it again and see if this time, I can actually pay attention to my team for a full season.

Love the last season WC and looking at last year's FPL winner, hits can be reasonable if you avoid them being habit forming (i.e. use to fix your team early and increase team value, then get disciplined).

I don't 'plan' to use it as such - I've saved it for late in the season for the last few years with varying success, in 11/12 it propelled me right up the ranks at the end of the season but last year it had little impact.

I think I avoid playing it early on as it somehow feels virtuous to play that way and that I'll therefore be rewarded for it. Utter gibberish of course.

I guess it depends how well/badly I start.

      Between weeks 4 and 6.
You can plan early for DGWs but you need to have the team value there to get the best players in, the first half of the season is all about building value and WCing helps massively.

I much prefer to save it - great feeling when all the DGW's start coming up and you've got a wildcard in the bank

Can you edit your post to include a link to Christina's article on wildcarding? Seems sensible.

This is actually a lot simpler than people make out:

      1) If you get off to a good start and can maintain it then you have been both lucky and skilled enough to keep your WC for later use.

      2) However, for most of us our intial team selection will not have included the latest must haves (due to poor selection, bad luck, changes to scoring bringing unforseen players into the play etc). In this circumstance it is almost certainly best to play your WC relatively early (gwk 4-10 as a range for example) to get on those changes as quickly and cheaply as possible.

its a nice team, only concern would be rafa with valencia's versatitlity and LVH's love of converting wingers into wing backs. I'd take rafa out, upgrade austin and then if you like the look of united and rafa pre season go back and tinker again.

Both could be a hit or a flop so...
      a) if you have no more in bank. Easier too downgrade later than take the hit later to get the money later.

Also if your playing a 5.0m keeper I would play him every week ( Speroni,Boruc etc) and change Krul to a 4 so you can have enough for the higher priced midfielder.

Hey guys, any tips for this team? I feel as though I have a lot of balance but I'm lacking in the GK department. Keeping Debuchy for at least the first 5 games. When he plays City I'll bench him.

    Mannone | Krul
Vermaelen Debuchy Filipe Luis | Mariappa Wisdom
Sigurdsson Hazard Eriksen Mata | Albrighton
    Dzeko Giroud Sturridge

I expect to get very frustrated with it and my girlfriend will hate the amount of time it takes up, I'm bad enough with just FPL!
