With the Andy Carroll funds nestling in the account, Newcastle will be expected to be one of the busier Premier League clubs in the summer transfer market. Their first foray was a sure-footed one, sealing the transfer of Lille midfielder Johan Cabaye for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £4.5 million.

Cabaye comes fresh from a double-winning season with Lille, boasts Champions League experience and has represented France at almost every level. Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was in little doubt that his first signing of the pre-season is one of quality…

“He has a first class pedigree having proved himself at the top level in France, both for his club and the national team. He will add great quality to our squad and I am really looking forward to working with him.”

A tireless midfielder, with pace in his locker, an assured first touch and a handy knack of retaining possession, the 25-year-old will be expected to make the adjustment from Ligue 1 to the Premier League with some ease. His partnership with Cheik Tiote in the middle of the park will be one that has Newcastle fans purring with anticipation. In Fantasy terms however, Cabaye’s talents may struggle to translate to raw returns.

The Statistics

Cabaye’s early career at Lille saw him somewhat shackled by defensive duties, although in the 2007/08 season, he still managed to conjure 7 league goals in 39 appearances. A change of management at Lille for the 2008/09 season saw the arrival of Rudi Garcia who elected to free up Cabaye from tracking back, giving him greater attacking freedom in a playmaker role. Cabaye returned 5 goals in 32 appearances, a hint of what was to come.

The 2009/10 season was arguably he high point of Cabaye’s career in France. Flourishing in a free role, he made 46 appearances in all competitions, scoring 15 goals – a tally boosted by spot-kick duties which saw him convert 7 times from 12-yards. His league statistics showed 13 goals in 32 starts, with 7 assists to his name.

Lille’s double winning season saw Cabaye’s influence in attacking areas diminish somewhat as both Eden Hazard and Gervinho came to the fore in the final third. Despite making 36 league starts, Cabaye returned just two goals but kept his assist tally ticking, setting up 9 goals for team-mates.

A closer look at Cabaye’s statistics last season reveals 89 shots on goal, including 22 on target – a decline from 103 shots and 37 on target achieved in 2009/10 but encouraging nonetheless. Cabaye has a propensity to shoot from range then and can also be an influence from direct free-kicks.

Cabaye’s disciplinary statistics are less appealing. He earned 10 bookings last season, a big jump from the 4 yellow cards received in 2009/10; another 9 bookings in 2008/09 however indicates that Cabaye’s competitiveness and aggression can often translate into cards. When you consider that he will be playing alongside Tiote (14 bookings), Joey Barton (9 bookings) and perhaps Kevin Nolan (10 bookings), that could be a real issue for Alan Pardew’s side and a concern for any Fantasy investors.

The Prospects

Newcastle clearly have themselves a player of some pedigree and one who is set to form an effective engine room partnership with the impressive Tiote. Cabaye himself has given us an effective insight into the qualities he brings to the Magpies midfield…

“I like being on the ball, playing with [the] ball and making lots of passes. I am not a big dribbler, but I like unsettling the opposition with short or long passes. I like going for goal, but I am also a player who knows how to defend and make lots of effort to get the ball back.â€

With that in mind, Cabaye’s role is likely to be one of a deep-lying playmaker whose ability to close down opponents could also remove some of the defensive shackles from Tiote’s play. The Frenchman’s Fantasy potential could well be limited however, and is much dependent on the future of Kevin Nolan at the club and the prospect of Cababye putting his expertise from the penalty spot to use.

Nolan is likely to be charged with box-to-box duties and given the license to utilise his proven finishing skills by supporting the centre-forward whenever possible. However, with West Ham boss Sam Allardyce seemingly relentless in his pursuit of his former Bolton skipper, Nolan could well find himself departing St James’s Park. That may well promote Cabaye as a more attacking influence in the Newcastle lineup.

Should Cababye earn spot-kick duties then it’s possible that his Fantasy returns would warrant interest. Right now, those responsibilities lie with Shola Ameobi, although it’s safe to say that he would seem unlikely to earn regular starts in the Magpies lineup next season. Again Nolan and Joey Barton would be factors here, so pre-season spot-kicks will need to be monitored.

Barring injury and suspension, we should see Cababye earn 30+ starts quite comfortably, with around half a dozen assists and a 3-4 goals from open play perhaps a reasonable expectation. A strong influence and an impressive array of passing statistics should also see the Fantasy Premier League Bonus judges smile on him. Those projections may even need to be revised should the pre-season reveal a greater influence for Cabaye in the final third.

I'm not too worried about his bookings- they probably hand them out in the French league just for picking your nose..... 😛

Too risky when they first come from abroad.

Their price will be protected for a long time so I'd wait a bit before jumping in to transfer in guys like Cabaye.

Taarabt, however, has to be in my gw1 squad. Compulsory for every QPR fan I would have thought.

Any one except Yarmolenko. Czech's don't concede a lot.

Pekhart appears to be the best option, according to general consensus on here though.

so 6 of pekhart's 9 goals came against san marino. that's nice to know. have somehow ended up with jeffren in my side, googled 'spain england under 21 predicted line-up' and the first match had jeffren in the side, i did it, deadline passed and i read some others and it was the only 1 of about 10 that said he would start. taxi

Adrián is the best Spain striker to get, IMO.

I've gone for Capel in MF as my sole Spanish player as he seems to pretty be pivotal to everything Spain do. Spain players are way too expensive so heaven help us if they go through to te next round.

That's why I decided to get 1 in now as they will probably be too expensive to transfer in come the qtr finals.

The transfer prices seem like they're only going to annoy people by taking players 0.1 out of their price range. I can't see anyone making 0.5 to be able to afford someone more and by the 1/4 finals the ones they want will have gone up anyway.

Just not enough people making transfers or days for prices to rise. You could get 0.2 rises on 5 players and then wildcard, maybe, if you got very lucky.

Touch and go Dunny. Seems he's more chance than the other cheap Ukrainians, but I wouldn't be surprised if he missed out.

                However, his UEFA profile says:
Having first played for the U21s in 2009, he made five appearances in qualifying for the 2011 finals before his injury-enforced absence.
                ...which gives me hope.

I have Matvyeyev, or whatever his name is, too.

However, the Czech's were red hot in qualifying so its unlikely Ukraine will keep a cleanie. Not sure he's worth a start today.

I'm leaving him on my bench.

I'm on 33 (-6) with 5 to play (probably). I really don't think anyone can say until tonights games are done. The guys/gals leading could have played all their best players with only rubbish on the bench. Who knows?

There will be one random guy who has both Belarus strikers, Shaqiri, and Sommer (c).
He will be sitting pretty ion about 40 with 6 top price Spanglish left to play.

                He will win the football.

To be honest I don't think this will be the case. Out of 6,000 players this is much less likely. In FPL you always get some lucky sod with Hangeland 21 (c) or something but that's out of 2 million players. I think it will come down to the Spain game, I hope for 1-1 with some unknowns scoring but if Mata or Sturrage get 2 then I predict a fair few will have them as captain.

There's too many expensive players from Spain/England and there could be any of them to score big so I couldn't really pick one because it could be a waste of money.

I always make one and will probably start at the weekend, yes I'm that sad! 😉

Usually do the top 6 away and home as top category, mid table sides strong at home, next those teams away and some of the bottom half teams away then the promoted teams and struggles from last season, usually have 4 catergories which inevitably change after a few games.

If Matvyeyev is starting I don't see why not and there's always the chance he might assist or score, no matter how unlikely. You won't know if Muamba is playing so that would be a big gamble.

              Hmm...

Currently have 34 points (joint 79th dontchaknow) and Kovarik (Czech Rep) as only guy left to play.

On my bench I have a Ukranian Def and Striker (Matvyeyev + Zozulya) who SHOULD both start but having said that I can't see them scoring heavily. Other guy is a cheap Spanish defender (Vila Rosello) who MAY start.

My captain got 2 pts yesterday so I may shift the captaincy to Kovarik and bring Zozulya on for Jonsson (1pt). Unsure whether to leave it at that though as all my other players have got 2 points so far and while the Ukranian defender may play I can't see him getting a clean sheet, more likely concede 2+ and actually lose me a point for playing him. As for Rosello... that's more of a gamble to leave him out I feel. ARGH. Going to wait for Czech v Ukr line up and potentially bring both Ukr players in (if starting) so either that or the Czech captain will pay off...

              Solid thinking?

                IMO yes, solid thinking.

I have Matvyeyev too but I don't fancy his chances against a rampant Czech team. I'm sticking with Zanka's 2points.

I originally had Vila Roselio too but I downgraded for Polyakov.

I think he will play today but maybe not a clean sheet.Think the England Spain game will be a score draw.

At £5.5m though you really need to get your money's worth, so probably play him anyway?

                I will try..

Autosubs: If you don't make any subs yourself, autosubs will happen where any players who score points on your bench will come on to replace players in your 11 who didn't play at all. This could be useful if you benched a Belarus defender and have someone in your starting 11 who didn't play a single minute.

Manual subs: If you make any subs yourself autosubs will disable. You can bring on any players from your bench who play today for any players in your starting 11 who played and didn't get a red card. You can't bring on subs who have already played. You can also change your captain to one who hasn't played.

I don't know if you can change a captain if its set to a player who got sent off does anyone know?

Ok thanks for that I'll explain my situation and can you tell me if I'm right..

I have Savostyanov for Belarus who didn't play a minute so my first sub of Polyakov will come in automatically? Also my sub keeper Sommer got 9 and my current keeper is Vaclík (Czech does anyone know if he is a starter?). And finally I have Gunnarsson who got 0 but my other subs are Ukraine defenders so what should I do there? How many points does making subs cost?

No unless Vaclik doesn't play. Gunnarsson can't be subed because he got a red card.

Leave it to auto if you have any players in your starting 11 who didn't play to get the Belarus defender.

I keep reading people saying about transfer hits. Can you make transfer in between games or is it just manager subs (off your bench)?

You can make transfers for next matchday but your squad you start with lasts all matchday, so only subs during the matchday.

Why have people already made transfers? Or am i missing something?

Wildcards I guess, either this or next matchday seem like good times to use them if you just took wild guesses in your squad.
