With the Andy Carroll funds nestling in the account, Newcastle will be expected to be one of the busier Premier League clubs in the summer transfer market. Their first foray was a sure-footed one, sealing the transfer of Lille midfielder Johan Cabaye for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around ยฃ4.5 million.

Cabaye comes fresh from a double-winning season with Lille, boasts Champions League experience and has represented France at almost every level. Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was in little doubt that his first signing of the pre-season is one of qualityโ€ฆ

“He has a first class pedigree having proved himself at the top level in France, both for his club and the national team. He will add great quality to our squad and I am really looking forward to working with him.”

A tireless midfielder, with pace in his locker, an assured first touch and a handy knack of retaining possession, the 25-year-old will be expected to make the adjustment from Ligue 1 to the Premier League with some ease. His partnership with Cheik Tiote in the middle of the park will be one that has Newcastle fans purring with anticipation. In Fantasy terms however, Cabayeโ€™s talents may struggle to translate to raw returns.

The Statistics

Cabayeโ€™s early career at Lille saw him somewhat shackled by defensive duties, although in the 2007/08 season, he still managed to conjure 7 league goals in 39 appearances. A change of management at Lille for the 2008/09 season saw the arrival of Rudi Garcia who elected to free up Cabaye from tracking back, giving him greater attacking freedom in a playmaker role. Cabaye returned 5 goals in 32 appearances, a hint of what was to come.

The 2009/10 season was arguably he high point of Cabayeโ€™s career in France. Flourishing in a free role, he made 46 appearances in all competitions, scoring 15 goals โ€“ a tally boosted by spot-kick duties which saw him convert 7 times from 12-yards. His league statistics showed 13 goals in 32 starts, with 7 assists to his name.

Lilleโ€™s double winning season saw Cabayeโ€™s influence in attacking areas diminish somewhat as both Eden Hazard and Gervinho came to the fore in the final third. Despite making 36 league starts, Cabaye returned just two goals but kept his assist tally ticking, setting up 9 goals for team-mates.

A closer look at Cabayeโ€™s statistics last season reveals 89 shots on goal, including 22 on target โ€“ a decline from 103 shots and 37 on target achieved in 2009/10 but encouraging nonetheless. Cabaye has a propensity to shoot from range then and can also be an influence from direct free-kicks.

Cabayeโ€™s disciplinary statistics are less appealing. He earned 10 bookings last season, a big jump from the 4 yellow cards received in 2009/10; another 9 bookings in 2008/09 however indicates that Cabayeโ€™s competitiveness and aggression can often translate into cards. When you consider that he will be playing alongside Tiote (14 bookings), Joey Barton (9 bookings) and perhaps Kevin Nolan (10 bookings), that could be a real issue for Alan Pardewโ€™s side and a concern for any Fantasy investors.

The Prospects

Newcastle clearly have themselves a player of some pedigree and one who is set to form an effective engine room partnership with the impressive Tiote. Cabaye himself has given us an effective insight into the qualities he brings to the Magpies midfieldโ€ฆ

โ€œI like being on the ball, playing with [the] ball and making lots of passes. I am not a big dribbler, but I like unsettling the opposition with short or long passes. I like going for goal, but I am also a player who knows how to defend and make lots of effort to get the ball back.โ€

With that in mind, Cabayeโ€™s role is likely to be one of a deep-lying playmaker whose ability to close down opponents could also remove some of the defensive shackles from Tioteโ€™s play. The Frenchmanโ€™s Fantasy potential could well be limited however, and is much dependent on the future of Kevin Nolan at the club and the prospect of Cababye putting his expertise from the penalty spot to use.

Nolan is likely to be charged with box-to-box duties and given the license to utilise his proven finishing skills by supporting the centre-forward whenever possible. However, with West Ham boss Sam Allardyce seemingly relentless in his pursuit of his former Bolton skipper, Nolan could well find himself departing St Jamesโ€™s Park. That may well promote Cabaye as a more attacking influence in the Newcastle lineup.

Should Cababye earn spot-kick duties then itโ€™s possible that his Fantasy returns would warrant interest. Right now, those responsibilities lie with Shola Ameobi, although itโ€™s safe to say that he would seem unlikely to earn regular starts in the Magpies lineup next season. Again Nolan and Joey Barton would be factors here, so pre-season spot-kicks will need to be monitored.

Barring injury and suspension, we should see Cababye earn 30+ starts quite comfortably, with around half a dozen assists and a 3-4 goals from open play perhaps a reasonable expectation. A strong influence and an impressive array of passing statistics should also see the Fantasy Premier League Bonus judges smile on him. Those projections may even need to be revised should the pre-season reveal a greater influence for Cabaye in the final third.

      DUST 514

Will be a free download in 2012, no doubt a distinctly average FPS but one WITH ACTUAL MEANING. (Outcome of battles effect MMO that I don't really play anymore)

Predicted on the previous page with an expected breaking point of approx 80 transfers in.

    Sommer, Shaqiri UP
    Affolter PROBABLY UP
Emeghara, Perepechko, Herrera, Dockal, Voronkov, Polyakov MAYBE UP

Andersen went up with only 47 transfers, Welbeck went up with only 48 transfers in (and 3 out). Meanwhile Perepechko didn't make it up while having 56 transfers in (and 3 out). Pretty hard to give any reasoning on this, although Andersen has low ownership Welbeck/Perepechko are 9.4 + 10.3% respectively.

    Ben Khalifa, Lossl DOWN
    Kasami, Gunnarson MAYBE DOWN

None of these players fell in price even with Ben Khalifa chalking up 103 outs (and 10 in), Lossl also got shipped by 88.

So, to revise my estimate... Maybe around met 50 transfers in is needed to rise, although ownership % of a player may effect this. For a price fall... who knows, maybe the threshold is far higher, or maybe they are all under price protection for a few days (if UEFA fantasy competitions have this!)

Brilliant Post, cheers mvtaylor. I don't think i'll bother with making transfers that are dependednt on price rises/falls. As it's probably more random than fpl. Also there's not many games left, so i don't know whether this suggests players will rise more frequently or not.

Having said that i'll wait till dockal rises once more before selling him, to guarantee 0.1 profit. Could've done without Herrera or Welbeck rising though ๐Ÿ™

I really thought pekhart and Bilie would've dropped.

    U21 chat time.

No price fallers which is a little strange. Random price rises.

Activated the WC to line my team up for the next two games and take advantage of the price rises.

What do people think of Spain ff-wise? Herrera might be red herring and the big guns never fired. Would like a Spanish forward but none fills me with confidence. ๐Ÿ˜•

hey jafa, congrats u had a great gw,2 in the lg and 17 in the world ๐Ÿ™‚
i had a disastrous(which is an understatement) gw with only 30 odd points, forget to change my keeper like a rookie, gone for eriksen over dockal, all the expensive players and captain choices failed ๐Ÿ™ i also wildcarded bcoz i am going away for a few days so may not be back in time to see the line ups and my brother will take over my team after i was sacked after gw1 ๐Ÿ˜‰

as for spanish players,i watched the game and herrera played very well and he is the cheap way to get into the spain team but u never know with the spanish team who will start or not like bojan, capel, azpilicueta and parejo didn't start yesterday ...thiago alcántara was taking all the corners for spain btw not mata and the assists rules are so crap in this game so ur mid/fwd basically has to score to get u points...

p.s.good luck for the next gw...

Hey cheers, Boom! Your advice was awesome and really helped with putting that rd 1 team together ๐Ÿ™‚

I see we are the only two CARites ๐Ÿ™

I actually fancy DEN a bit particularly Danish Billie and Ericksen.

Yes this game needs daily management. I remember it last year with the World Cuppy.

Spain. The problem is that the expensive players aren't firing and look unreliable just to even start. I quite like the idea of getting in one of the two cheaper Spanish defenders now as there must be a cs on the way. Montoya I think he's called.

ENG look worthy of investment now particularly Walker and Sturridge.

        Have a better 2nd rd! ๐Ÿ˜€

So, what's the general consensus, people using their wildcards now to get rid of the non-starters (and Gunnarsson ๐Ÿ‘ฟ ) and pick up the bargains, or waiting?

I just used two TFs last night in case of price drops, which didn't happen, but the players I brought in went up so that was good. I'll decide wether to W/C later,I imagine it's the same as FPL and you can W/C at any time?

I don't really know, but I'd assume it's the same and you can use it at any point.

With Gunnarsson banned, I've three non-starters so I think I may go for it later on.

I took Gunnarsson and Kozak(who loves yer baby)out, but two of my no shows were Albrighton and Azpilicueta both of whom I can see playing the next game, and I think the second games will give a real chance to see favourite 11s,and a better idea who will qualify.
