New West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued his summer of restructuring by capturing striker Brown Ideye from Dynamo Kiev for a club record transfer deal. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year contract and, in a clear statement of intent, has been handed the number nine shirt for the season ahead.

The Baggies’ new technical director, Terry Burton, confirmed that the Nigerian international was the club’s number one target for 2014/15, with Irvine moving quickly to improve upon a dismal campaign that saw the midlands outfit finish just three points ahead of the drop zone:

“When I arrived at Albion the recruitment department flagged Brown up as the man at the top of their wish list. It is a fantastic signing because of the quality and the potential of the player. I can see that he really wants to be here and that he really wants to be playing in the Premier League. He’s a dynamic player who likes to get in behind defenders and he has the pace to do so. He gets himself into good scoring positions in the box and if there are opportunities then he will get on the end of them. We’re looking forward to seeing him play for the club and scoring goals.”

The History

A product of the Bayelsa United youth system in his native Nigeria, Ideye helped Ocean Boys to the 2006-07 title after scoring once in five appearances. Snapped up by Swiss outfit Neuchatel Xamax in January 2008, he managed double-figures in both full seasons at the club, delivering 22 goals and 16 assists in 50 league appearances before making his way to French club Sochaux.

Ideye made a slow start to his career in France. Arriving midway through the 2009-10 campaign, he mustered just two goals in 17 matches before finding his form the following year, producing 15 goals and six assists in 35 Ligue 1 appearances.

Once again, he was on his travels after Dynamo Kiev shelled out for his services in July 2011 and Brown wasted little time in announcing himself to the Ukrainian league. Bagging a brace in each of his first two appearances, he proceeded to produce 45 goals and 13 assists in 107 matches across all competitions before agreeing the deal with the Baggies.

On the international stage, Brown was handed his Nigeria debut back in May 2010 and has since scored five times in 24 appearances for his country.

The Prospects

Brown’s ability to consistently get amongst the goals looks crucial for West Brom next season. The midlands club have failed to replace Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian served up 17 goals on loan during 2012/13 – despite splashing the cash on the likes of Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe at the start of the previous campaign, they found the net on just 43 occasions, with Sessegnon and Saido Berahino top scorers on a mere five goals apiece.

Standing five foot 11, Brown may not be able to match the physical attributes of Lukaku but he boasts an excellent work-rate and turn of pace, factors that have been badly missed since the Belgian’s exit. Given that Irvine has splashed out £10 million for the 25-year-old’s services, it’s fair to say that Brown can be expected to lead the line for the upcoming campaign, with his experience in the Champions League and on the international stage affording them vital quality up front.

Understandably, Fantasy faith is a little low in West Brom right now. Last season’s 16th place finish hardly inspires confidence, whilst Irvine’s lack of top-level experience is also disconcerting and may persuade most Fantasy managers to initially steer clear of the Baggies, handing us time to assess their form. So far in the pre-season, Irvine’s preferred formation has been a 4-2-3-1 and, with Brown nailed-on, the likes of Victor Anichebe and Saido Berahino will be hoping to grab a role on the flank in order to stay in the first-team picture.

Coming in at 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Brown has yet to be added to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but a ceiling of 6.5 looks the likeliest scenario. The opening schedule hands the Baggies three decent home matches (SUN, EVE, BUR) and a trip to Swansea in the first six and suggests Irvine’s team could get off to a steady start. If they are to prosper and avoid the troubles of 2013/14, the Nigerian’s contribution in the final third looks crucial.

Here is my 5 man rotation at the back team!
    Boruc - 4.0
    Wisdom - Coloccini - Cameron - N Taylor - O'Shea
    Eriksen - Sanchez - Hazard - Nasri - Albrighton
    Rooney - Giroud - Dzeko

Only thing i'm not sure about is the goalkeeper at the moment as I don't want to have one from the teams I've already picked in defence.

might as well get a 4.5 keeper starting so you can make Nasri's slot a 9 which gives you the flexibility to own one of
      Silva / Mata / Ramsey / Fabregas

Great moves for Siggy and Davies, less so for Vorm...

On a side note, what was Siggy like before he moved to the bench of Tottenham? I've wasn't as interested in FPL until then, so I have no idea if he was a good option, where he will likely play etc.

So playing behind either Bony or Gomis, interesting, and for that price!

I know hes a bit of a monster at set pieces and corners, does this mean that he'll knick them of De Guzman, if he ever returns?

Seems like the Sigurdsson deal has sealed De Guzman's fate. With Shelvey and Ki now there, it appears Swansea aren't going to recall/go in for him. That would mean he'll knick them off De Guzman, yes. Although Ki is a bit of set piece whizz too

Indeed he'll probably be playing behind one of them. Although, i wonder if Monk will be tempted to go with a diamond

Looks like a possibility, either way, since Swansea are such an attacking team, and their fixtures are reasonable, he may sneak into my team ahead of my love-punt- Tadic.

A lot will depend on the movement of Bony for me.

Sorry if I misread your post...Siggy had a loan at Swansea...everyone who seemed to be everyone had him, points scoring was fantastic.....then Rodgers went to LFC, LFC wanted him, he turned them down to Spurs.....he didn't do much and now hes joined Swansea...he was awesome...then ok....then not great now a lot of people are getting him ok.

Wouldn't want to risk going without any attacking Chelsea players in my team, due to the great attacking potential they have, but who do I choose?

Costa = subject to injuries, unproven in the Premier League, can be inconsistent, was dreadful at the World Cup, and he's a complete nutter.

Fabregas = may not play 'in the hole', hasn't played in the Premier League for a while.

Hazard = ended last season poorly (including the World Cup), can be inconsistent

    Oscar/Willian = not good enough

Schurrle = good price, but not a starter.

    These are my options:

    A) Costa, 7.5 midfielder
    B) Hazard, 8.0 striker
    C) Fabregas, 9.0 striker

Don't worry about Fabregas not being here a while, class like his doesn't disappear overnight.

I'd avoid Costa until proven, there are much better options.

I'm going with Fabregas, because I beleive he will be in that Lampard 4-3-3 advanced midfield role, but if he is not, and is in the double pivot, Hazard is the standout option.

If anybody wants to take note of a potential gem, consider Liam Moore of Leicester. Priced at 4.0, he made his breakthrough last season, being an integral part of their promotion. I think he could be partnered with Morgan and so would be a cheap route into what i think will be a solid defensive team

It was saying on the radio that the way it is going, "soccer" will overtake the four big sports in the U.S. If that happens. It's only a matter of time before they become good.

I've said it before, if we had the system in place over here decades ago, we would already be a powerhouse. Growing up, I played with so many talented players that perhaps could have gone really far with the proper system to cater to their talents and development. Yeah, what the heck, I'll include myself in that group! Of course, you still have a multitude of U.S. citizens who like to rip soccer apart. Saying it's stupid, etc. They just don't know any better.

The sport will become more popular but the PL and CL, and of course the World Cup, are the big draws. We might never have the actual elite players domestically but could still become a massive supporter of the sport.

Radioman smoked too much wacky tabacky then.

Radioman hopefully knew that hockey is 5th at best (American football, basketball, baseball and NASCAR reign supreme)

America will have to win it for "soccer" to even begin to approach the big 4... Americans on front runners... they're not going to get excited about it until they think they can win it regularly (like basketball at the Olympics)

It's a big country. Certain pockets of people like certain sports. More than enough to go around. Soccer has its place over here and will only grow. American football still reigns supreme. Baseball has been on a huge decline in popularity. NASCAR? Dying off, and only ever really big with a specific demographic. Hockey....more for Canadians than U.S. citizens and not big at all. Already losing out on ratings compared to soccer. I could further educate, but I have better things to do.
