New West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued his summer of restructuring by capturing striker Brown Ideye from Dynamo Kiev for a club record transfer deal. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year contract and, in a clear statement of intent, has been handed the number nine shirt for the season ahead.

The Baggies’ new technical director, Terry Burton, confirmed that the Nigerian international was the club’s number one target for 2014/15, with Irvine moving quickly to improve upon a dismal campaign that saw the midlands outfit finish just three points ahead of the drop zone:

“When I arrived at Albion the recruitment department flagged Brown up as the man at the top of their wish list. It is a fantastic signing because of the quality and the potential of the player. I can see that he really wants to be here and that he really wants to be playing in the Premier League. He’s a dynamic player who likes to get in behind defenders and he has the pace to do so. He gets himself into good scoring positions in the box and if there are opportunities then he will get on the end of them. We’re looking forward to seeing him play for the club and scoring goals.”

The History

A product of the Bayelsa United youth system in his native Nigeria, Ideye helped Ocean Boys to the 2006-07 title after scoring once in five appearances. Snapped up by Swiss outfit Neuchatel Xamax in January 2008, he managed double-figures in both full seasons at the club, delivering 22 goals and 16 assists in 50 league appearances before making his way to French club Sochaux.

Ideye made a slow start to his career in France. Arriving midway through the 2009-10 campaign, he mustered just two goals in 17 matches before finding his form the following year, producing 15 goals and six assists in 35 Ligue 1 appearances.

Once again, he was on his travels after Dynamo Kiev shelled out for his services in July 2011 and Brown wasted little time in announcing himself to the Ukrainian league. Bagging a brace in each of his first two appearances, he proceeded to produce 45 goals and 13 assists in 107 matches across all competitions before agreeing the deal with the Baggies.

On the international stage, Brown was handed his Nigeria debut back in May 2010 and has since scored five times in 24 appearances for his country.

The Prospects

Brown’s ability to consistently get amongst the goals looks crucial for West Brom next season. The midlands club have failed to replace Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian served up 17 goals on loan during 2012/13 – despite splashing the cash on the likes of Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe at the start of the previous campaign, they found the net on just 43 occasions, with Sessegnon and Saido Berahino top scorers on a mere five goals apiece.

Standing five foot 11, Brown may not be able to match the physical attributes of Lukaku but he boasts an excellent work-rate and turn of pace, factors that have been badly missed since the Belgian’s exit. Given that Irvine has splashed out £10 million for the 25-year-old’s services, it’s fair to say that Brown can be expected to lead the line for the upcoming campaign, with his experience in the Champions League and on the international stage affording them vital quality up front.

Understandably, Fantasy faith is a little low in West Brom right now. Last season’s 16th place finish hardly inspires confidence, whilst Irvine’s lack of top-level experience is also disconcerting and may persuade most Fantasy managers to initially steer clear of the Baggies, handing us time to assess their form. So far in the pre-season, Irvine’s preferred formation has been a 4-2-3-1 and, with Brown nailed-on, the likes of Victor Anichebe and Saido Berahino will be hoping to grab a role on the flank in order to stay in the first-team picture.

Coming in at 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Brown has yet to be added to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but a ceiling of 6.5 looks the likeliest scenario. The opening schedule hands the Baggies three decent home matches (SUN, EVE, BUR) and a trip to Swansea in the first six and suggests Irvine’s team could get off to a steady start. If they are to prosper and avoid the troubles of 2013/14, the Nigerian’s contribution in the final third looks crucial.

Hey guys, anybody fancy a preseason fantasy football game? I’m running a draft style fantasy game for the International Champions Cup.

For those who don’t know, it’s a friendly tournament going on in the US this year. Teams involved are:
    Real Madrid
    Man United
    Man City
    Liverpool
    AC Milan
    Inter Milan
    AS Roma
    Olympiacos

The tournament starts on the Thursday, so I’ll need you to be active enough to send me a forty man selection list before the first match, so that’s 1am Friday morning for the Brits.

They’ll be no budgets, and to keep it simple we’ll have five man squads, with no squad restrictions (so you can have five strikers if you want). Points will work the same as FPL, but with no bonus points or save points. If you’re interested, fill out this form:

    https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_sCPWmXwHrI6oLx_665DUQ1DJs5p_5rT_KD8TZE9ifE/viewform?usp=send_form

Four spots left, first come first served. Fill out that form and I’ll email you the further details.

chester or any hull player could be an issue seeing that they have europa league. I mean if they qualify next week the next europa league tie is 2 legs - after gameweek 1 and then after gameweek 2 I think. Could be some rotation, tiredness, injuries.

      Attack looks great. Ideal tbh.

Not sold on that defense though. I know Hull and Burnley rotate well but Duff may not play and then you'd have to play Chester every week which is not ideal given that they're in EL.

Pieters is terrific for home games but Stoke way were very poor. Debuchy too has some tough fixtures to start with.

Think I might borrow Rodallegabomb's idea of getting Costa for Chelsea's first two games and then switching to RVP or Rooney for GW3. Gives a couple of games to assess the RVP v Rooney debate whilst enjoying Chelsea's nice first two fixtures.

    2nd pre season update -

Gonna be a long season for us unless Gus can add to the squad.

Gus is rotating Pantillimon and Mannone.

Jones Brown and JOS are nailed on.
Fletcher and Wickham are sharing game time. Fletcher looked lively tonight despite being starved of service.

We were drawing 0-0 with H'pool and after 60 minutes Gus brought on 11 players from our U21 squad and we ended up winning 3-0!!

    RMT

    Mann/krul

    Shaw. Luis. (Mariappa wisdom vlaar)

    Ramsey siggy eriksen Sanchez tadic

    Rooney dzeko ings

3-5-2 ings been good cover for any forward or midfield
been out 2 good keepers to rotate and 2 good attaching backs
for points and 1 from other 3 should mean good home
fixture at least .. With it looking like extra points for dribbles
crosses ,setting up chances etc I think the midfield will be good
    for points

Guys, don't put Rafael in your team.. Yes he saves you 0.5m over Shaw but Valencia is going to get matches too. Nothing more infuriating than having your defender sit out a CS.

I've seen a few people with Remy in their teams. What's the thinking there? I'd be surprised if he starts more than 50% of our games, given the competition, ie Lallana, Sterling, Markovic and even Lambert.

Here's my team! Got cover attacking wise from all the big clubs. Defensively the team looks strong too. Arsenal, Chelsea, Stoke and Utd will be pretty good at the back. When Sigurdsson or one of my defenders has a tough fixture I can play Mariappa or Wisdom instead. Looks really balanced. I'm playing it safe at the start until I know which big name players are performing and which 4.5M defenders are nailed on.

    Giroud Sturridge Dzeko
    Sigurdsson Mata Eriksen Hazard
    Vermaelen (Utd) Debuchy Filipe Luis
    Begovic

    Bench: Gilks, Wisdom, Mariappa, Albrighton

I still think the Vermaelen rumours are rubbish.

Evans is underrated, if he stays fit they'll be more solid. So much chopping and changing last year. Shaw is also a big improvement on Evra who had been a defensive liability for a couple of years.

He's 19, can't play accross the backline simultaneously. Vidic and Ferdinand were crusty old dudes but they brought some leadership, so did Evra. Who's gonna be doing the bollicking at the back for them?

Okay my final (for now) version of the 5manrotation team!
    Rip it apart!!

    Boruc - Green
    Wisdom - Coloccini - O'Shea - Huth - Taylor
    Eriksen - Ozil - Hazard - Nasri - Albrighton
    Rooney - Dzeko - Giroud
    £0.5m ITB

Still unsure about whether going with Sanchez instead of Ozil and then getting Guzan and 4.0.

Conor Townsend has started both pre-season friendlies. A 21 year old left back. Not on the FPL game, but surely to be 4.0 in price.

Not saying he'll nail down a regular place, but Figueroa is past it. I do think they'll sign a new left-back though.
