Gylfi Sigurdsson emerges from the bench to score twice in Swansea’s win over Plymouth. Stevan Jovetic bags a brace as City hammer AC Milan, Diego Costa nets on his Chelsea debut, Raheem Sterling grabs Liverpool’s winner against Olympiakos, whilst a Gary Taylor-Fletcher strike earns Leicester victory over Everton:

Sigurdsson at the Double
The Icelandic international needed just seven minutes of his second debut for the Swans to serve notice of his Fantasy potential for the season ahead. Emerging from the bench on 65 minutes, Sigurdsson was immediately handed dead-ball duties for the Welsh side and his deflected corner was forced home by Jordi Amat before he struck twice – the second courtesy of a superb long-range free-kick – in a convincing 4-0 win.

After the match, Garry Monk (who will be without Leon Britton and Marvin Emnes for the start of the season due to knee injuries) lavished praise on the Icelandic international after a sparkling display. Priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Sigurdsson now looks set to pick up in ownership ahead of a schedule which hands Swansea four strong home fixtures and a trip to Sunderland in the opening seven Gameweeks:

“From the start of the summer, he was a player I really wanted to bring in straight away. He’s a top player – actually a better player than when he was first here. He’s come in and contributed straight away today. He adds quality to our squad, which is what we want. It helps that he already knows how this club works. He knows me well, as well as a few of the boys, so in terms of settling in, that will help him.”

Costa Opens Blues Account
Chelsea’s summer signing from Atletico Madrid netted on his debut as Jose Mourinho’s side came from behind to defeat Slovenian outfit NK Olimpija Ljubljana 2-1. Chelsea started in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Cesc Fabregas fielded in the double-pivot alongside Nemanja Matic, before a change in tactics saw them shift to 4-3-3, with the former Arsenal skipper afforded more license to break forward. As a result, Fabregas – who took most of his side’s corners when on the pitch – supplied the pass for Costa’s first goal for the club before Kurt Zouma notched the winner from close-range just after the hour mark. In defence, Mourinho started with Cesar Azpilicueta and Filipe Luis as his full-backs but the Blues boss fielded eight defenders over the course of the 90 minutes, meaning Fantasy managers are no closer to ascertaining his preferred backline ahead of the new campaign.

Jovetic Bags a Brace in City Rout
The Premier League champions look to have quickly found their form after demolishing AC Milan 5-1 last night. Manuel Pellegrini utilised his non-World Cup players for the showdown and forgotten man Stevan Jovetic caught the eye with a two-goal haul against the Italians to suggest he’s finally put his injury woes behind him and offer a valid option to City for the start of the season, with Alvaro Negredo set for months on the sidelines. Elsewhere, Jesus Navas maintained his impressive pre-season form with a goal and assist to stake a claim for inclusion, whilst fellow wide man Scott Sinclair was afforded the full 90 minutes and also managed to get amongst the goals.

After the match, Pellegrini talked up Jovetic’s prospects for the season ahead – prior to last night, the former Fiorentina forward was far off the Fantasy radar after mustering a mere just two league starts in his debut campaign:

“Well Stevan had a very bad luck last year, he had a lot of injuries the whole year, so it’s very difficult for a player to have an important performance when he cannot play three games in a row. In this year he starts the pre-season – well he finished last as well – playing well and I think that now he works continually every day he will demonstrate why he’s here in Manchester City because I think he’s a very good player.”

Sterling Fires Reds to Victory
Brendan Rodgers fielded a number of his key players as Liverpool narrowly beat Greek side Olympiakos 1-0. Regulars such as Martin Skrtel, Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling all started the match – the latter two combined for the Merseysiders’ match-winner with just over five minutes on the clock, as Sterling vindicated the decision of the 16% FPL managers who already have him on board. New boys Emre Can and Lazar Markovic were also named in the XI – intriguingly, the former (at 5.5 in FPL) was fielded as the most advanced central midfielder in a 4-3-3 and looks one to monitor if Rodgers views him as a regular starter.

After the game, though, the Reds boss was admitted he was particularly pleased with the display of his front three as he looks ahead to the first season of the post-Luis Suarez era:

“I’ve seen a difference in Daniel since he came back. He has obviously got confidence from the World Cup and his season last year. I think he’s ready to take on the mantle. He got 20-odd goals last season so he’s a striker of great value. Markovic will only get better and better. He showed great strength when he burst through and hopefully later on when he picks up that speed and sharpness in his game, he’ll go on and finish that. We’ve got good speed. Raheem Sterling is always a threat – he’s a joy to watch. I thought those three were really exciting.”

Taylor-Fletcher Gives Foxes the Edge
A Gary Taylor-Fletcher goal was enough to give Leicester victory over Everton in a rehearsal for both clubs’ Gameweek 1 showdown. Nigel Pearson named a strong starting line-up, fielding new signing Leonardo Ulloa alongside David Nugent in a 4-4-2, with Marc Albrighton fielded on the flank, whilst Liam Moore (4.0 in FPL) was handed the full 90 minutes alongside skipper Wes Morgan at centre-half. The Foxes boss made numerous changes at the break and switched to a 4-2-3-1 as the Championship winners held on to clinch victory.

After the game, Pearson explained his decision to field both Moore and Morgan for the entire match, after he handed 18 others 45 minutes apiece:

“It’s a numbers game. We’ve come with a group of players and we’re doubled up in some areas but not others. Centre-backs won’t run as far as central midfield players or wide players, so there is some thought that goes into it, but they’re both very fit lads capable of playing 90 minutes. It’s valuable time to re-sharpen their own games.”

For Everton, Roberto Martinez afforded 20 players game time in their second friendly of the summer. With the club’s World Cup players still yet to feature, and Seamus Coleman omitted from the clash due to a hamstring concern, the Toffees boss fielded a mixture of first-teamers, fringe players and youngsters. The likes of Sylvain Distin, Aiden McGeady, Gareth Barry and Steven Pienaar were all handed game time as Martinez switched from 4-2-3-1 (with Steven Naismith as the lone striker) to an experimental 3-4-3 after the break but the Merseysiders were unable to find a way past Kasper Schmeichel in the Leicester goal.

    Lost on last post!

If two players score the same amount of goals in a premier league season, but one plays significantly more minutes, who would you go for?

Giroud and Dzeko both scored 16 goals last year, and it took Giroud a further 1083 minutes more than Dzeko to accomplish this.

The way I see it, more minutes = more points, more chances to assist (Giroud = 9 / Dzeko = 7), more chances involved in, more points for over 60 mins, higher chance of bonus (Giroud = 29 / Dzeko = 25)..

The only counter point I can think of is that if you're getting 16 goals from either of them regardless of minutes played, then its better to play another benched striker in Dzeko's place when he's dropped, and this might pick up an extra goal or two while Giroud flops around the pitch wasting your time.

But if I'm paying over 8 million for a player, I want to rely on HIS output, not his replacement's, and I want to be 100% assured that my strikers are going to play and be involved in their team's goals from the offset when so much is still left uncertain at the start of this game..

So why is Dzeko chosen in 65% of RMTs and Giroud only in 30% *?

According to the season ticker, for the first 6 games, Arsenal have the 11th most favourable attacking fixtures and Man City have the 18th most favourable, so why choose Dzeko for the start?

Because when Dzeko plays (which it looks like he will) he gets goals and points aplenty, regardless of fixture. Giroud is the very definition of flat-track bully.

But no use having Dzeko if he's on the bench and Giroud blanks but gets an assist for being on the pitch for an extra hour.. I get that Dzeko will probably start the season, but there are no other strikers at Arsenal (Alexis is not a striker) whereas there's at least 2 if not 4 at City...

It's an educated risk. I think he'll start so I'm getting him. I also think Giroud will do well (and that's saying something!) so I'm getting him too.

I don't really want to plan on dismantling my team after only 3 fixtures, otherwise I'd just plan an early wildcard team.

Settle as many potential issues before the season, so you won't have those problems when transfers cost points. Dzeko is a potential problem.

I would go for the one that plays the most that way I wouldn't be thinking every week will he start or just get a cameo appearance. A lot of people have gone dzeko because of how injury prone aguero is plus negredo is injured and no one thinks Jovetic will play however I believe Jovetic is decent and should get some game time but I'm not pelligrini. When I pick a player I take into account probably more than anything potential game time.

Yeah, but another way to look at it is, Giroud needs more minutes than Dzeko ( a significant amount ) to score the same number of goals. So according to this, if Dzeko gets more minutes( which is a possibility now due to Negredo's injury) , then he should score more goals.

Plus, people think City will score more than Arsenal, and most people don't have a City mid and have Sanchez, so you'd kinda want Dzeko over Giroud if that's the case.

They are both in my team for the start of the season. And If I have to choose someone for the whole season it has to be Giroud because he will play more minutes so will bring more points.

After September Walcott is back and Giroud can also get a rest

He will play the same as Dzeko this season IMO

Oh and surely the main reason is people are getting Danchez instead and think doubling up with Giroud would be overkill

Clearly Negredo being injured for the start of the season is a fairly big factor, swinging the favour sharply in Dzeko's direction as we can now expect to see him get more minutes than he might otherwise have done.

I think it is possible. At the end of last season, even when Jovetic was completely out of form, he managed to steal some gametime from Dzeko.

More pre-season could help clarify, but most likely will just tell us what we already know - that Pellegrini has options and doesn't mind rotating.

The more I think about the more I feel Mata is a must have to start the season at the very least. I need an extra 1m to change Eriksen to Mata, but I am quite happy with the defence I have put together and don't want to weaken it too much. My other possible route is selling Hazard for Fabregas.

Question is, would this move be wise? Perhaps Hazard and Eriksen will score more then Cesc and Mata. Thoughts on this please?

For me, that's a toss of a coin.

Hazard has pens in his favour but all the others could have set pieces in their favour too (contributing to their baps potential.

Matas fixtures and no European involvement sways it?

I'm willing to roll the dice on Hazard and Mata outscoring Cesc and Eriksen based on penalty duties and flattruckbully effect. Easier to downgrade anyway. So would try to have those 2! 🙂 easier said than done.

Hmmm, Hazard is certainly more explosive imo however I'm not entirely convinced by Eriksen atm and would take Mata over Erik...

I'm going to wait and see how and where Mata features for us in pre-season before I come to any kind of conclusion about whether I want him or not. He has huge pts potential if he is deployed behind RVP and Rooney, and I would certainly take him if LVG guves him that role.

People sweating on Dzecko game time have to remember he plays for the most attacking team in league. He definitely will share game time with Jov and Aguero but seeing as City score goals for fun he will rack up the points regardless of time spent on pitch.

I can get Dzeko later on in the season if he looks assured of gametime + fixtures + goals/form, but Jovetic and Aguero are both there at City.

"He is a player of control. He's a player that wants the ball, a player that needs the ball. He's not the guy to run with the ball in a transitional game, he's the guy who gives you other qualities. But in away matches we will have much more control of the game, and much more initiative than we had before."

I can't help it Innsie, i could get Azpi instead of Cahill which would mean Yaya instead of Sanchez and keeping Fabregas, he's gonna rack up the points ain't he

I'm not convinced that he'll live up to his 11.0 price tag. If Sanchez (a popular, high ownership player) explodes, while Yaya's returns reflect his stats, you'll get left behind.

Dawson > B.Davies for a start, your last 3 midfielders are all not nailed on, too much upfront. downngrade RVP or Sturrdige and upgrade Barkley, in my opinion

"He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield," he said. "I hope he will give us competition for the players in these three positions.

"He hasn't played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and, at the end of the day, I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future."
