Liverpool continued to strengthen their attacking options for the season ahead with the signing of Lazar Markovic from Benfica last month. The 20-year-old arrives on a long-term contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £20m and was the fourth new face to arrive at Anfield, following Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Emre Can to the club.

Discussing the new boy’s arrival with the club’s official website, Brendan Rodgers hailed Markovic’s versatility as a key factor as the Reds look to restructure in the final third following the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona:

“This is an exciting signing for us and one that improves our squad, in terms of attacking options, for the coming season. He was hugely impressive for Benfica last season and has proved he has the ability to produce the goods in European competition as well, which will be important for us. Lazar is flexible to play a number of positions, but I like the way he attacks games and is always positive and looking to make something happen. He will fit in with the way we play at Liverpool.”

The History

Starting off in the Borac Cacak youth system, the prodigious Markovic was snapped up by Partizan Belgrade as a 12-year-old back in 2006. Just a couple of months after his seventeenth birthday, the winger was handed his first-team debut at the end of the 2010/11 campaign and, quickly establishing himself as a key first-team figure, proceeded to rack up 14 goals and 16 assists in 65 matches over all competitions.

As a result of his exploits out wide, the youngster earned a place in the Serbian top-flight’s Team of the Year in his two full seasons at the club before Benfica came calling last summer. The versatile Markovic played 48 times in his only campaign for the Portuguese outfit and, fielded on either the right or left flank, went on to produce seven goals and four assists in 48 appearances over all competitions, helping his side reach the Europa League Final and clinch a domestic treble.

At international level, Markovic played for Serbia’s youth sides on a total of 17 occasions and notched two goals before being handed his senior debut in February 2012. To date, the winger has turned out six times for his nation and found the net twice.

The Prospects

As pre-season unfolds, events seem to have fallen in Markovic’s favour and suggest he could start the campaign in Rodgers’ first XI. Suarez’ departure, allied with a six-week lay-off for Lallana and an abandoned bid for Loic Remy certainly lessen the competition for places and hand the 20-year-old a platform to impress. The new boy revealed his manager has already hinted at his likely role for the upcoming campaign:

“The left side is preferable, but I will play wherever I am asked. I do not mind. I have spoken with the manager. He told me what position I will be playing in the team and I am here to fulfil his expectations. “

Fielded on the left of a front three alongside Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling in his debut against Olympiacos at the weekend, Markovic’s lightning pace and trickery seem ideal for Rodgers’ counter-attacking approach, as the Reds look to Steven Gerrard’s distribution from a deep-lying central role to spark quick transitions in the final third. Despite failing to find the net over his 45-minute appearance, the new boy was the subject of his manager’s post-match praise:

“Markovic will only get better and better. He showed great strength when he burst through and hopefully later on when he picks up that speed and sharpness in his game, he’ll go on and finish that.”

A lack of top-level experience, allied with a mediocre scoring record, suggests the youngster is far from the finished product, though. It may well be that by the time Rodgers’ shopping spree has come to an end, and the likes of Lallana is fully fit, the Serbian will be afforded more time to develop over the course of the campaign, as Liverpool look to utilise the strength and depth of their squad on across domestic and European competitions.

As Sterling’s rise to Fantasy prominence showed last season, though, age is not a factor in Rodgers’ thinking. There’s no doubt that, to some degree, Markovic’s game time will be managed (Sterling was afforded 24 starts last term, with a further nine appearances off the bench) but if he can make an immediate impact at the start of the season, the Serbian – who comes in at 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.2 in the Sky Sports game – could quickly become a more prominent player than many expect. With so many nailed-on options available for a similar price elsewhere, and the nailed-on Jordan Henderson (6.0) stepping up his attacking contribution in last night’s win over Man City, few will be willing to take the initial plunge, allowing the wide man time to settle ahead of a tricky opening schedule which sees the Merseysiders make their way to City and Spurs in the first three Gameweeks.

So what exactly is Fabregas' position in Chelsea? With Matic in the double pivot role?

I've currently got Haz over him and pretty certain that Haz is worth the extra 1.0m.

Who is everyone going with? (I've also gotten Sanchez over Ramsey)

Not sure yet. Imo he isn't suited to play in the double pivot in a 4-2-3-1, but who knows.

If he does play there, Haz is deffo worth the extra dosh as he'll be on pens as well.

Whatever the line up its certain that Fab will be high up the pitch getting goals & assists. For the start of the season its looking like him or Costa are the Chelski attackers to get

        Good point.

I currently have Haz and Costa. I think that's the way to go since if Fab starts performing well, it's a one transfer to do in order to get him in. The same can't be said the other way around.

I am currently on the opposite of the players you're choosing and I can afford Hazard and Sanchez but I am waiting on Sanchez and Hazard was so inconsistent last year with his points scoring he would have a couple of good weeks then do nothing for a while

        That's a good point too.

I think Haz just edges it for me because of the pens. But as I said up top, Haz can easily become Fab with one transfer but going Fab -> Haz is a bit harder.

Pens are great, but so are corners, and free kicks, especially for a team like Chelsea. It looks like Cesc will be on most set pieces.

I don't think anyone would pick a formation in pre-season and then just blindly stick with it for the whole season.

Two years ago, everyone jumped on the 3-5-2 bandwagon when the template emerged with Fellani, Bale, etc. but you need to be prepared to twist as needed.

If you had to pick, for the first 7 GWKs :

    - 1 MID from : Hazard, Fabregas, Mata

    AND

    - 1 ATT from : Rooney, Costa

    Which pair would you pick?

I was on Hazard + Rooney, but seeing Mata's opening fixtures and Fab and Costa's apparent form, I'm rethinking everything...

      B) Fabregas & Rooney
      C) Mata & Costa

I would say, any 3 of the above is a good combo (I would select B, for the moment). Other pairings are suicidal!

I find it so funny how I keep reading how Matic is the new Ramsey. Ludicrous. He's good for a couple of goals and a few assists in a season, but nothing more. He won't be prolific like Ramsey was last year. He's not suited to the points system in FPL, however he is suited to the UFPL points scoring system. He was a great cheap back up for me last season and is always good for 5/6 points a game.

Highest scoring midfielder of Serie A with 15 goals in 33 games his last season. Whatever you think of his game, in FPL the actual return is what matters, and if topping the scoring chart for his position is not particularly great return, then nothing is.

And for comparison, Eriksen's best season in way worse Eredivisie was 10 goals in 33 matches.

except those are the only 33 games when he has been any good. They're the same age but in Eriksen's last 138 league games he's scored 32 goals and got 60 assists. He's also produced in the CL

That's also more than half of all his matches in Serie A. He only played there for two seasons! It's, regardless of his first season, bit dull to say he wasn't particularly great in Italy, when he topped midfielder scoring chart in his second season at 20-years of age.

Btw, how much has Eriksen produced in CL again? 1 goal and 2 assists, all against Dinamo Zagreb that is hardly even Eredivisie level?

2 goals and 7 assists in the CL. I was referring to his excellent performances in the CL tho, which have always come against the best teams since we've had the 'group of death for the past 5 years', every year Real Madrid or Barcelona plus other heavyweights.

I'm not saying Lamela is shit. His stats are pretty decent in serie A. Maybe he becomes a great player, but for me he's well below Eriksen right now.

I took a look at the most expensive, non-injured returning attackers to see whose new prices deviate the most from their final price last season to figure out if we experience a bit of cognitive dissonance when Raheem Sterling is priced at 8.5m, since he was so valuable as a cheap route into an explosive attack last season but maybe is not so valuable as a leading man priced at a near premium. The midfielders seemed more interesting than the forwards as far as price deviations but I can list those as a separate reply as well.

I would love to hear opinions on which player prices jump out as being a definite bargain or a hard to justify increase from the price reached by the FPL market by the end of last season instead of the FPL designers at the start of this season.

MIDFIELDERS (New price / Old price)

    Touré MCI 11.0 10.6
    Hazard CHE 10.0 10.4

Neither sparkled this summer after becoming nearly essential for all but the hippest of us (No Yaya for me and I have the six figure OR to prove it!), yet that doesn't stop Yaya from being considered overpriced far more often than Hazard. If last season he finally converted the potential many of us saw when owning him in his early years, hasn't Yaya also found his level just like Hazard?

    Ramsey ARS 9.0 7.4
    Özil ARS 9.0 9.6
    Gerrard LIV 9.0 9.7
    Silva MCI 9.0 9.4
    Mata MUN9.0 9.8

Ramsey and Ozil are interesting players in this range, which has often proven to be the industry standard price for a big midfielder. A big part of a big attack for a big club, a 9m mid better play a big role in much of his team's FPL returns. Is Ramsey now that player? Is Ozil still that player? Can Arsenal possibly sustain so many expensive players at one position?

    Cazorla ARS 8.5 9.3
    Oscar CHE 8.5 8.5
    Sterling LIV 8.5 6.4
    Nasri MCI 8.5 8.7

One of these guys is not like the others in the "premium with a slight blemish" range. Can Sterling do it again? And if so, will he go from 5.0m to 10m+ in less than two seasons? The toughest pick in this list, imo, as his returns are an as yet to be determined combination of his own class, his situation within a system, and his proximity to a player in Suarez that all opened up the opposition for him to exploit.

    Barkley EVE 7.0 5.2

Wow. Huge vote of confidence from FPL here as he was thrust from the cheap fanboy favorite bracket to the "with greater price comes greater responsibility" no man's land of the 7m midfielder, a bracket that I don't think has seen a player become elite from its midst since Michu and Fellaini two seasons ago.

Less likely to be subbed off than the ever injury doubt Silva. Fabregas is yet to nail down the number 10 role and we're unsure of his output from double pivot. Sterling is a rotation risk with all these new signings.

Nasri is nailed on, a better finisher than all 3, has a few corners, didn't have the world cup. Why he isn't mentioned more is beyond me

Fabs, all day. Silva is over-priced. He's only had one season where he came close to justifying a 9.0 price tag (2011/2012). Sterling, well, 132 points last year doesn't justify a 8.5 price. Fabs will be the most likely of the three to prove his value; a 180 point year for him is certainly possible.

    would appreciate any feedback!

    Guzan Krul
    Luis Rosenior Ward Wisdom Debuchy
    Haz Siggs Mata Henderson Arny
    Costa Rooney Pelle

    Is Arsenal defensive cover necessary?

Guzan is suspect since Manone will be a better option.
I am weary of Chelsea backs as Mourinho keeps changing them. Wisdom is also questionable IMO.
Everybody else will play. Costa is not proven and you got Haz. I see no pool, spurs or city cover.

Mannone isn't really nailed on though is he? Its been Panti all preseason. I feel that Luis is the most nailed on at LB, Azpi won't play out of position...if anything he'll battle with Ivan at RB. I know Costa isn't proven but I still think he will be great (Granted, I am a Chelsea fan ha). I have Henderson for pool cover, his more attacking role this year will produce goals. But yes, I am struggling not having city cover...spurs cover idk...Ben Davies over Ward?

Mannone is a debate but given his last season performances compared to Panti, I would keep Mannone. Well your other keeper Krul will play in if Mannone isn't playing. I also had Luis in my team but you do have a point there.
I do have Davies for spurs cover.
          All the best.

    Beg (Krul)
    Davies, Caulker, Vlaar (Ward, Targett)
    Mata, Sanchez, Henderson, Eriksen (Siggy)
    Austin, Rooney, Costa

Have 0.5 in the bank, any thoughts as to where or if I should upgrade/downgrade

Upgrade Targett to Neil Taylor. I think a QPR defender for 5m is a waste, no matter how good he is, the club will concede goals.
