Liverpool continued to strengthen their attacking options for the season ahead with the signing of Lazar Markovic from Benfica last month. The 20-year-old arrives on a long-term contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £20m and was the fourth new face to arrive at Anfield, following Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Emre Can to the club.

Discussing the new boy’s arrival with the club’s official website, Brendan Rodgers hailed Markovic’s versatility as a key factor as the Reds look to restructure in the final third following the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona:

“This is an exciting signing for us and one that improves our squad, in terms of attacking options, for the coming season. He was hugely impressive for Benfica last season and has proved he has the ability to produce the goods in European competition as well, which will be important for us. Lazar is flexible to play a number of positions, but I like the way he attacks games and is always positive and looking to make something happen. He will fit in with the way we play at Liverpool.”

The History

Starting off in the Borac Cacak youth system, the prodigious Markovic was snapped up by Partizan Belgrade as a 12-year-old back in 2006. Just a couple of months after his seventeenth birthday, the winger was handed his first-team debut at the end of the 2010/11 campaign and, quickly establishing himself as a key first-team figure, proceeded to rack up 14 goals and 16 assists in 65 matches over all competitions.

As a result of his exploits out wide, the youngster earned a place in the Serbian top-flight’s Team of the Year in his two full seasons at the club before Benfica came calling last summer. The versatile Markovic played 48 times in his only campaign for the Portuguese outfit and, fielded on either the right or left flank, went on to produce seven goals and four assists in 48 appearances over all competitions, helping his side reach the Europa League Final and clinch a domestic treble.

At international level, Markovic played for Serbia’s youth sides on a total of 17 occasions and notched two goals before being handed his senior debut in February 2012. To date, the winger has turned out six times for his nation and found the net twice.

The Prospects

As pre-season unfolds, events seem to have fallen in Markovic’s favour and suggest he could start the campaign in Rodgers’ first XI. Suarez’ departure, allied with a six-week lay-off for Lallana and an abandoned bid for Loic Remy certainly lessen the competition for places and hand the 20-year-old a platform to impress. The new boy revealed his manager has already hinted at his likely role for the upcoming campaign:

“The left side is preferable, but I will play wherever I am asked. I do not mind. I have spoken with the manager. He told me what position I will be playing in the team and I am here to fulfil his expectations. “

Fielded on the left of a front three alongside Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling in his debut against Olympiacos at the weekend, Markovic’s lightning pace and trickery seem ideal for Rodgers’ counter-attacking approach, as the Reds look to Steven Gerrard’s distribution from a deep-lying central role to spark quick transitions in the final third. Despite failing to find the net over his 45-minute appearance, the new boy was the subject of his manager’s post-match praise:

“Markovic will only get better and better. He showed great strength when he burst through and hopefully later on when he picks up that speed and sharpness in his game, he’ll go on and finish that.”

A lack of top-level experience, allied with a mediocre scoring record, suggests the youngster is far from the finished product, though. It may well be that by the time Rodgers’ shopping spree has come to an end, and the likes of Lallana is fully fit, the Serbian will be afforded more time to develop over the course of the campaign, as Liverpool look to utilise the strength and depth of their squad on across domestic and European competitions.

As Sterling’s rise to Fantasy prominence showed last season, though, age is not a factor in Rodgers’ thinking. There’s no doubt that, to some degree, Markovic’s game time will be managed (Sterling was afforded 24 starts last term, with a further nine appearances off the bench) but if he can make an immediate impact at the start of the season, the Serbian – who comes in at 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.2 in the Sky Sports game – could quickly become a more prominent player than many expect. With so many nailed-on options available for a similar price elsewhere, and the nailed-on Jordan Henderson (6.0) stepping up his attacking contribution in last night’s win over Man City, few will be willing to take the initial plunge, allowing the wide man time to settle ahead of a tricky opening schedule which sees the Merseysiders make their way to City and Spurs in the first three Gameweeks.

Aside from GW1 (liv) and GW7 (tot), Southampton have great fixtures all the way up to GW12.

Pity that the club is in such a state of flux at present

Is anyone considering any Soton players? If so, which ones are worthy of a place in our 15 man squads?

Cheers. Sounds like when their fixtures turn for the worse, unfortunately.

Wish Everton and Southampton could switch fixture strengths so I could get in some of their known quantities first and then let the Southampton team take shape.

"Ivanovic started the game alongside Gary Cahill in the centre of defence, before switching to right-back after the break following the introduction of John Terry."

‘It’s important for the manager to have players who can play in different positions, it enables him to mix it up when he needs to. I’ve always said I’m comfortable playing in both positions, I’m happy to do that but it’s up to the manager where he wants to play me.’

The Serbian defender was also delighted for his compatriot and close friend Matic, after the midfielder scored his first goal for the club 16 minutes from time.

‘It’s great for him in terms of his confidence,’ Ivanovic explains. ‘He’s capable of scoring goals so hopefully now he can go on and score a few more.’

    Speroni, 4.0
Felipe Luis, Coloccini, PvA, Naylor, Cameron
    Sanchez, Sterling, Eriksen, Siggy, Ward-Prowse

I had my steam account hacked this week and some sod in Japan spent 200 quid on crap for Dota2 in about 15 minutes. Got it all back that day and all turned out fine (quite impressed with steams speed on this by the way) but then had to change passwords on several sites as I, like most lazy idiots, use the same password for most things.

Anyhoo, got a decent tip from a security site which was that its ok to use a base password that you will easily remember if you add on the name of the site you are on to lengthen and complicate it.
Say you had 1234567 as your base password, for here you would make it 1234567fantasyfootballscout, this is almost unhackable by a bot as being so long makes it trillions to 1 to be worked out, for shorter named sites like ebay you might have to add in your name like 1234564ebaypatrickmurphy or whatever.
Also your base password should have some symbols and numbers in it like 1234567%alpha or something.
Hope this helps you think about complicating your passwords as its no fun at all to open your emails to a slew of receipts for stuff you didnt buy, trust me.

    Shaw/Gibbs/Pocognoli (Ward) (Trippier)

    Gerrard/Sanchez/Hazard(c)/Siggy (Puncheon)

    Nugent/Rooney/Pelle

Originally had Baines in for his output but looking at the fixtures he's probably not worth it until week 7. Freed up some funds to bring in Rooney, Pocognoli will play, is a wing back, and rotates reasonably with my other defenders but is the likely sacrifice for Baines (along with a higher value player). Likewise if Mannone fails to get starts he'll be swapped out pretty quickly for either Pantimillon or Myhill.

I love Shaw's stats from last season and i see him getting forward even more at United.

With RvP and Rooney to aim for, and Mata getting him in, this could be a Baines type season for Shaw. Really fancy him to do well.

Is it worth getting a Chelsea defender straight away??

I know they are probably the best defensive team but with basically every player up for rotation is it not better to keep a bit of cash and get a certain starter for week 1 instead?

Defenders don't score massive points anyway so the cash could either be used elsewhere or kept until we get a clear picture as to who most commonly starts?

It's a fair point and their fixtures aren't the greatest around. They will be going up in price though and you might bigger fish to fry getting the right mids or fwds. I'll probably start with 2 myself.

Very true. I meant in general so if they do rotate the throughout the season then they won't be as big scorers as last year.

Plus Mou is trying to build an attacking team as that was in his job spec. He only went defensive last year as he didn't have the right players for his type of attack at the base of midfield and upfront.

They'll be very quick and direct but could concede a few more this year for this attacking strategy, I can't see him parking the bus as much as that's not what Roman wants

Just an educated guess really. Would think the new boys won't walk straight in to the back line. The old lot I listed put in a shift for Bruce last year and I think did quite well - expecting their experience to be rewarded from the start and he will gradually introduce the new young buys.

He had a mare of it last year. He looked like complete crap when he was forced to play LB going forward and seemed just unhappy all year. That said, I thought he looked pretty great playing LB for Belgium this summer so maybe he was just too disinterested to be bothered for Spurs. Feel like he will have a good bounce back year playing his preferred position all year.

Just going to make a sterling comment, (comment about sterling..), I just saw the highlights, fantastically well taken touch for the goal, he has such speed and energy and enthusiasm. Just the way liverpool played last season, he would dominate some games but not others, for 8.5m it would mean a pick between him or sturridge because i can't afford both. Gerrard ended up with more points because of set pieces and penalties. Eriksen at 8m has set pieces and crosses.

Walcott for ages was 9m i think and had much better stats.

      Tinkering now though..

Arno has good fixtures and a couple of tidy out's if he gets off to a shitter (Snoddy and Siggy).

I actually think he'll be a very good option, especially at that price.

Eriksen needs to pick up where he left off but with a new manager/system, you just don't know where he will feature. Lamela makes him less of a nailed option for me. I'd rather bring him in once i know the Spurs set up.
