Scout Report – Lazar Markovic

Liverpool continued to strengthen their attacking options for the season ahead with the signing of Lazar Markovic from Benfica last month. The 20-year-old arrives on a long-term contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £20m and was the fourth new face to arrive at Anfield, following Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Emre Can to the club.

Discussing the new boy’s arrival with the club’s official website, Brendan Rodgers hailed Markovic’s versatility as a key factor as the Reds look to restructure in the final third following the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona:

“This is an exciting signing for us and one that improves our squad, in terms of attacking options, for the coming season. He was hugely impressive for Benfica last season and has proved he has the ability to produce the goods in European competition as well, which will be important for us. Lazar is flexible to play a number of positions, but I like the way he attacks games and is always positive and looking to make something happen. He will fit in with the way we play at Liverpool.”

The History

Starting off in the Borac Cacak youth system, the prodigious Markovic was snapped up by Partizan Belgrade as a 12-year-old back in 2006. Just a couple of months after his seventeenth birthday, the winger was handed his first-team debut at the end of the 2010/11 campaign and, quickly establishing himself as a key first-team figure, proceeded to rack up 14 goals and 16 assists in 65 matches over all competitions.

As a result of his exploits out wide, the youngster earned a place in the Serbian top-flight’s Team of the Year in his two full seasons at the club before Benfica came calling last summer. The versatile Markovic played 48 times in his only campaign for the Portuguese outfit and, fielded on either the right or left flank, went on to produce seven goals and four assists in 48 appearances over all competitions, helping his side reach the Europa League Final and clinch a domestic treble.

At international level, Markovic played for Serbia’s youth sides on a total of 17 occasions and notched two goals before being handed his senior debut in February 2012. To date, the winger has turned out six times for his nation and found the net twice.

The Prospects

As pre-season unfolds, events seem to have fallen in Markovic’s favour and suggest he could start the campaign in Rodgers’ first XI. Suarez’ departure, allied with a six-week lay-off for Lallana and an abandoned bid for Loic Remy certainly lessen the competition for places and hand the 20-year-old a platform to impress. The new boy revealed his manager has already hinted at his likely role for the upcoming campaign:

“The left side is preferable, but I will play wherever I am asked. I do not mind. I have spoken with the manager. He told me what position I will be playing in the team and I am here to fulfil his expectations. “

Fielded on the left of a front three alongside Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling in his debut against Olympiacos at the weekend, Markovic’s lightning pace and trickery seem ideal for Rodgers’ counter-attacking approach, as the Reds look to Steven Gerrard’s distribution from a deep-lying central role to spark quick transitions in the final third. Despite failing to find the net over his 45-minute appearance, the new boy was the subject of his manager’s post-match praise:

“Markovic will only get better and better. He showed great strength when he burst through and hopefully later on when he picks up that speed and sharpness in his game, he’ll go on and finish that.”

A lack of top-level experience, allied with a mediocre scoring record, suggests the youngster is far from the finished product, though. It may well be that by the time Rodgers’ shopping spree has come to an end, and the likes of Lallana is fully fit, the Serbian will be afforded more time to develop over the course of the campaign, as Liverpool look to utilise the strength and depth of their squad on across domestic and European competitions.

As Sterling’s rise to Fantasy prominence showed last season, though, age is not a factor in Rodgers’ thinking. There’s no doubt that, to some degree, Markovic’s game time will be managed (Sterling was afforded 24 starts last term, with a further nine appearances off the bench) but if he can make an immediate impact at the start of the season, the Serbian – who comes in at 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.2 in the Sky Sports game – could quickly become a more prominent player than many expect. With so many nailed-on options available for a similar price elsewhere, and the nailed-on Jordan Henderson (6.0) stepping up his attacking contribution in last night’s win over Man City, few will be willing to take the initial plunge, allowing the wide man time to settle ahead of a tricky opening schedule which sees the Merseysiders make their way to City and Spurs in the first three Gameweeks.

It wouldn't seem sensible to invest in anyone from Southampton this season. The first team has been torn apart and no matter how good the quality of the players they get to replace them, they will still need to learn to play as a team again and that will probably take 2 seasons! Even Man City took a couple seasons to get going with some pretty classy players.

    STAY CLEAR.

Torn apart? They seem fine to me. They still have the likes of Schneiderlin, Wanyama and Davis bossing the midfield, with Fonte, Clyne and Boruc holding the fort.

      Lambert = Pelle
      Lallana = Tadic
      Shaw = Bertrand
      Chambers = Clyne

I watch the Eredivisie and I can't tell you Pelle and Tadic def aren't downgrades as long as their transistion is smooth. They're of a higher level than Eriksen when he joined the Premier League.

                  Oops.

And you can never compare the Premier League with the Eredivisie, but that doesn't mean there are no class players here? Eriksen, Bony, Vertonghen and Suarez are great examples.

If Tadic & Pelle make a good transition, they are way better than Lambert & as good as Lallana.

I've watched all of their pre-season games and a few whole Feyenoord matches.

Shaw does eclipse Bertrand yes, but he was hardly a crucial player for the Saints last year. Some say Targett has the potential to be as good as well.

pelle and tadic are totally untested in a worthy league let alone the prem

Read it again. He's not talking Fpl terms. He's disagreeing with a suggestion that Southampton haven't downgraded this window. When they clearly have, in pretty much every aspect.

Pretty much the same thing, Southampton aren't taking the FPL risk, they're taking the real risk. They can't buy proven players so they go for the unproven ones (that could be just as good).

if he was nailed i reckon kolarov would actually be 7.5.

goals and assists to start ratio of all the premium defenders, so 6.0 and over: (attacking points in sub apps not counted)

    1) kolarov 0.43 (9 in 21)
    2) baines 0.31 (10 in 32)
    3) skrtel 0.22 (8 in 36)
    3) coleman 0.22 (8 in 36)
    5) zabaleta 0.21 (7 in 34)
    6) walker 0.19 (5 in 26)
    7) kompany 0.18 (5 in 28)
    8) demichelis 0.15 (4 in 27)
    9) terry 0.12 (4 in 34)
    10) ivanovic 0.11 (4 in 36)
    11) cahill 0.10 (3 in 29)
    12) mertesacker 0.09 (3 in 35)
    13) koscielny 0.06 (2 in 32)
    13) luis 0.06 (2 in 32)
    15) shaw 0.06 (2 in 35)
    16) vertonghen 0.04 (1 in 23)
    17) azpilicueta 0.04 (1 in 26)

but, goals are worth double an assist. so how about attacking point per start ratio. (i'm not a mathsy guy so ratio may be the wrong word to use in this context but in the words of one of those sunglasses gifs, deal with it).

    1) kolarov 1.43 per game (30 in 21)
    2) baines 1.41 per game (45 in 32)
    3) skrtel 1.25 (45 in 36)
    4) coleman 1.17 (42 in 36)
    5) kompany 0.96 (27 in 28)
    6) zabaleta 0.71 (24 in 34)
    7) walker 0.69 (18 in 26)
    8) demichelis 0.67 (18 in 27)
    9) terry 0.62 (21 in 34)
    10) ivanovic 0.58 (21 in 36)
    11) mertesacker 0.43 (15 in 35)
    12) cahill 0.41 (12 in 29)
    13) koscielny 0.38 (12 in 32)
    14) luis 0.19 (6 in 32)
    15) shaw 0.17 (6 in 35)
    16) vertonghen 0.13 (3 in 23)
    17) azpilicueta 0.12 (3 in 26)

confession: this was all an exercise to convince myself kolarov isnt a completely mental option. actually think the main stumbling block is not rotation but being subbed on (he started 15 of the last 25 last season), it's the 5min cameos which rob you of a sub which hurt the most. 6.0 is a lot for a defender, in the context of your overall squad though, carriable? dare i steal the baines patented 'think of him as a midfielder' line.

*disclaimer* this could actually be quite useful in looking at the other defenders on the list, the ones who are more nailed on. although you could argue defender attacking points are the most volatile and unpredictable of the lot, just look at vertonghen at the bottom suddenly

Like the topic, defenders definitely provided the most unpredictable attacking points, there are the few you can guarantee will do it season in season out like baines/zabeleta etc (tend to be fbs) but then you get defenders like skrtel. Will be hard for him to replicate that attacking form this season.

If you look at attempts on goal (or mins per attempt)(his stats are insane), touches in the opposition box and crosses, he is right up there as well.

I'm thinking about downgrading Eriksen for him as I'm not convinced he'll play through the middle for Spurs. But I can't figure out what I'd spend the extra 1.5 on.

firstly you've missed a player out, secondly i think you've spent to much in defence, and terry could be rotated this season quite a lot, meaning i think you should either get Shaw due to manu's opening fixtures or possibly luis!

So i would downgrade a few of your defenders, so that you can upgrade in attack, where the points really count

Just worked out the rest of his team's value. He has 4.5 available.

With that said, I think your team is a bit too thin. There aren't any strikers at 4.5 that will start, and Wisdom and Duff (and all other 4.0's) aren't certain of getting games either, which means most weeks you will have the bare 11.

Hey Kip, few links to help you out...

      Preseason Tab: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/pre-season-form-guide/

This is up at the top of the home page & you can check any team's preseason results & more importantly their starting XI & sub's.

      Predicted Line Ups: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/07/28/predicted-lineups-for-the-201415-premier-league-season/

Now, the title is self explanatory but, you should use this with the info from the preseason tab to make sure they both make sense.

There's no problem with asking here but, also can't hurt to draw your own conclusions either...

Not a Spurs fan but I've seen a few of their pre-season games. Eriksen has been played wide with Lamela in a central role. I'd say he's nailed but perhaps not in the position you would like to see him in. He should remain on set-pieces, if that counts for anything.

He's in my team at the moment but what I've got now will not be what I start with.
