Scout Report – Enner Valencia

West Ham made their fifth signing of the summer earlier this week by acquiring frontman Enner Valencia from Mexican side Pachuca. The Ecuador international has been granted a work permit by the FA and arrives at Upton Park on a five-year contract in a deal reported to be in the region of £12m:

The Hammers fought off a number of suitors to land their new striker, who came to prominence with a series of impressive displays in the recent World Cup. Discussing his move with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old reckons his summer exploits for Ecuador will stand him in good stead in his new surroundings:

“The World Cup was a good tournament for me personally, I scored three times and for my first World Cup it was a good experience, but I hope my next one is better for me and the team. Of course, the World Cup gives me confidence to come to Europe and I want to take and advance with this opportunity that West Ham have given to me. For me, scoring against England, one of the big teams in the world, before the World Cup was important for me. Hopefully I can score again against those defenders! I scored many goals as a striker. I’m fast, and I try to continue like that because I know the goals brought me to West Ham.”

The History

A product of the Caribe Junior youth system is his native Ecuador, Valencia joined Emelec on a free transfer in 2008. Initially starting his career as a winger, he failed to feature in the first-team until the arrival of current Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli in 2010 and once installed as a regular up front, quickly demonstrated his goal-getting abilities – over 117 appearances, he notched 23 times and also supplied 21 assists across all competitions and helped his side win the league in 2012/13.

Signed by Mexican outfit Pachuca in January this year, Valencia wasted no time in delivering the goals. In 23 appearances for his new club, he netted 18 times and also chipped in with a pair of assists, with his exploits winning Valencia the Golden Boot for finishing the season as top scorer in Mexico’s Premier League.

On the international stage, Valencia has featured for his country on 13 occasions and found the net seven times – impressively, the Hammers new boy has scored six times in his last six matches for Ecuador and grabbed three goals in the recent Brazil 2014 World Cup.

The Prospects

Valencia’s flourishing form should give Allardyce’s side a real shot in the arm as they attempt to improve upon a series of poor displays over the summer so far. The Hammers are looking to play a more expansive style of football in the season ahead but, after seeing his side draw two and lose two of their opening four friendlies, their manager admitted it’ll take some time before the players become accustomed to a new approach.

With club record signing Andy Carroll set to be sidelined for four months due to ankle ligament damage, Valencia looks poised to partner fellow new boy Mauro Zarate up top. Having racked up 18 goals for Velez Sarsfeld last season, the Argentine also arrives on the back of some impressive showings and has already grabbed his first goal for the club during pre-season – Zarate’s craft and guile, allied with Valencia’s agility and excellent aerial prowess will certainly afford the London club a new look up top for the upcoming campaign.

As mentioned, though, it remains to be seen just how quickly Allardyce can translate this new offensive style of play into Fantasy returns. Certainly, with just 40 goals to their name last term, West Ham did little to justify our Fantasy interest up front and it may well be that most would-be suitors will resist initial investment until the results start to improve.

Available for 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Valencia’s appeal in the former game is dented by Zarate’s 6.5 price tag, given that the Argentine is potentially lined up for a share of dead-ball duties.

A mixed opening schedule is also likely to prove a deterrent. The season opener against Spurs is followed by trips to Palace and Hull in the following three and with Liverpool, United and City also on the agenda by Gameweek 9, Valencia looks one to monitor for now. If he can adjust quickly and replicate his international form in the English top-flight, though, the Ecuadorian may yet force his way into our Fantasy plans.

I have watchlisted the below defenders and like some advice from the experienced people here on the security of their starts / gametime in their respective teams please?

Ward (CPL) - surely the most secure in the list?
B Davies (TOT) - will he be Pochettino's first choice left back? What about Danny Rose?
    N Taylor (SWA)
    Cameron (STO)
Wisdom (WBA) - feeling more risky by the day.

With the extinction of 4.0 defenders and increasing lack of solid 4.5 options, I am trying to put together 'play 2 bench 1' more expensive rotations, which when coupled with a big hitting defender of your choice will hopefully provide far greater solidity and value.

    Rich Rotations - No. 1

    Total cost: 15m
    Teams: WHU/TOT/SOT (Demel, Davies, Clyne)
    Type: Play 2 Bench 1

For 16 out of the first 18 gameweeks, there are at least 2 'blue' fixtures a week. The potential attacking returns of Davies and Clyne make this rotation appear even better value, while Demel adds solidity and security of starts. This is the type of rotation you can simply leave and not worry about, add a Chelsea defender and 4.0 filler and your defence is well set up to withstand the first half of the season.

I love the ticker already 🙂

Nice idea, but I'm worried about the starting potential of these players - Davies has Rose to compete with, West Ham have just signed Jenkinson, and Clyne could well be replaced due to the shake up at Southampton.

And my advice would be the exact opposite ^

Get a shit defence early and push all the funds up top. As you bring in the bandwagons with ease you'll free funds for the defence.

Cheap defenders can still get CSs, and they are capped at 4pts just like an expensive defender.

Shit, cheap defences have worked in the past, but there are so little affordable options now that going down the same route could result in you playing your WC early doors (ie if the players don't get the starts, concede loads etc).

It is a fair strategy and one that I have always used but it should be adapted this season given the lack of options.

It used to be stick with your transfers and ignore bandwagons a couple years ago. The last two years it's been completely the opposite. Last year rewarded the casual player pretty much all year round.

Advice, balance your cash wisely around your team so you can transfer in any manner of expensive player to try and avoid taking a large hit.

Made two drunken trasnfers over the years:

The first was bringing in Defoe before his 5 goal haul against Wigan :ccol:

The second was bringing in Vermaelen instead of Vertonghen due to not being able to read an alphabetical list properly, and then immediately having to take a hit to swap them again 😳

Guess it depends on the level of drunkeness. It's like playing pool, a couple of beers loosens you up and you're more instictive, not overthinking it and generally doing better as a result. Too many beers, and you're sending the cue ball flying off the table into Big Angry Dave's pint.

That is so true. Every rule and every piece of advice has exceptions and counter-examples(including this one). There is no single set of rules to guarantee success.

Listen to other people's advice, especially if you are new to the game, but decide for yourself which bits to incorporate into your own strategy and which bits to reject. And step back occasionally to take a reality check and consider alternatives.

Every week captain the player who is top of the captains pick survey on FFS.

This will mean you won't end up losing too much ground on people because of a bad captains pick (as the majority will have the same pick as you), so if your team is strong enough you will move up the rankings.

agree, except there are slight exceptions.

last season Man City vs Chelsea, Hazard had a great game.

Next week I captained him along with minority on here, he got a hattrick. Form over consensus there.

But yes, generally be very conservative with your captain. No wild gambles.

Its when you buy them that counts. Im talking about watching price changes every single day. Never letting a player that you plan to sell fall by even .1 same with buying players

Unless of course that 0.1 fall doesn't affect the selling price. It's a good idea to make a note of what you actually brought a player in for, for this very reason.

      -watch full games

-only take hits early for value/team balance, avoid hits once team value 110m+

      -be conservative with (c) choices

      1. Plan no more 5 games ahead (it's fun planning more but ends up a complete waste of time)
      2. Treat every trade as precious. Even if you run the risk of losing a transfer if you don't use it, unless the trade improves your squad, don't make it.
      3. Watch as many games as you can (or your wife/husband/partner/kids) will allow you to. Stats are useful, but nothing beats your own personal scouting
      4. Don't be afraid to take hits early doors, not only to build team value, but also to get your squad right. It normally works out better than spreading the trades over multiple weeks.
      5. Enjoy it. It's only a game 🙂

I would say a good FPL team should have wide coverage of players(i.e. mix of players from top EPL clubs) particularly in midfield and forward. Also, never play two attackers (midfield or forward) from same club in the early part of the season, Never have a team with weak bench i.e. Your bench should have players who can be rotated in to your starting XI and the most important is picking the perfect Captain, for this you have to keep it simple and go for the inform player playing with the inform club.

Plan 3 games ahead. Form and fixtures are both relevant although I tend to steer more towards the latter.

Trust your gut instinct not what the crowd are saying.

Splash the cash up front and save at the back. Forwards are top of the pecking order, gks/defenders at the bottom. Budget accordingly.

Try and qualify who you are getting advice from. There are some great managers on sites like these but unfortunately there are a lit more who don't have a clue.

      My rules tend to be

Always have 2 playing goalkeepers & never double your defenders from the same club.

Have at least 14 players you can rely on - your bench will have to come to your rescue at least once across 38'weeks

Don't think he will do as well as last season.. Not without Suarez making chaos in the box and getting penalties and such. Also don't like their fixtures and he might not play full games every week with Europe also in the mix. Might take some time before Liverpool gels as they have bought in so many new players, Rodgers magic might take a while to kick in.

Trying something a little different, planning on WC after 4ish weeks once things have settled down and it'll be easier to identify where the value players are, and this is what I've got just now:

    De Gea/ 4.0m
    Davies (Hull)/ O'Shea/ Luis/ Dawson/ Fonte
    Eriksen/ Johnson/ Fabregas/ Mata/ Nolan
    Rooney/Long/ Adebayor

    Have 0.5 left in bank

Full credit for going for something different. Reckon Adebayor will be fit for the new season?

If you want to spend 5.0 on our defence (I wouldn't until you've seen who we're signing at CB) then I'd go Clyne over Fonte. He bombs forward a lot for Koeman and overlaps Tadic. With Chambers gone, Clyne isn't under the same rotation pressure.

Thanks, will look into getting Clyne in, will have to monitor the Adebayor situation, think he could be a good option if fit. If not may bring in pelle instead and use spare funds elsewhere as I'm not really sure about Soldado...he stung me last season!

      Wisdom probably not nailed on.
Think there are better 4,5 defs than Colo and Vlaar..
Davies is a great pick imo.
Pieters better option than Huth apparently.
I like Sanchez, Haz and Siggy, the other two are OK, but feel like mid needs another 9 mill.
      Soldado?
Would rather have Rooney than RvP and upgrade elsewhere, like in mid.
I think Dzeko will be great, still a little worried about game time..
