With the season now just a fortnight away, we turn our attentions to a number of kindly priced midfielders in our latest article for members. Picking the right combinations in the mid-price bracket looks crucial to a strong start and with Fantasy managers debating the merits of a number of targets, we scour the statistics to assess their previous form.

For the purpose of this article, we’ve selected seven midfielders, no more than 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, who have proven popular picks so far and/or are set for some favourable opening fixtures – potentially affording them the chance to hand us an early-season bandwagon. Comparing their respective statistics, we also dig deeper into seasons gone by in our attempt to ascertain the best options for our initial lineups.

Just back from Arsenal vs Monaco. Observations below for anyone who is interested (albeit based on a meaningless friendly)

Giroud - was way off the pace and had a shocker. Looked unfit and had a trampoline touch. He was bad enough to put me off starting the season with him.

Chambers - played centre back and was great, marshalled the defence and may get the centre back nod to start the season, could be a steal. Future England star.

Debuchy - stared poorly but came into the game nicely and worked hard. Gooners fans seemed to love him already but not convinced on clean sheet potential based on today. Arsenal desperately need a big holding midfielder as Arteta is not up to it.

Ramsey - loads of energy but often came from deep. Didn't get as much of the ball as last year in this particular game so not convinced he is a must have from the start.

Alexis Sanchez - started on the right side first half and was poor but moved central to the striker spot second half and really started to shine. Great touch and has a surprising level of tenacity. As a central prospect he is a no brainer for every dream team but as a wide forward he may suffer from "Mata Syndrome". Linked up very well with the Ox who came on at half time and changed the game - now there is a solid differential?

Arsenal first 11 is going to be so hard to read but they will be scoring heaps of goals with this squad.

One other observation was that young Zelalem who came on shone again and almost had two assists.......one to watch.

Not too much to split them in my opinion. I believe it mainly depends on which other players you want and which formation you plan to go with. If I had to pick 2 though, I would go with Hazard and Fabregas.

As Santon is missing through injury, I'd say best £4.5 m defender is V Aanholt - attacking potential in a team that can get a decent numbers of CS imo.

This team is probably going to be ripped apart due to my reliance on differentials but let me know what you think please!

    Krul, Foster

Debuchy, Davies, Clyne, Figueroa, V Aanholt

Mata, Fabregas, Tadic, de Jong, Shelvey

    Rooney, Costa, Pelle

I've doubled on United, Chelsea & Southampton attackers simply because I feel all these individuals have strong merit but also the fixtures are weighted so well in their favour. I know ignoring Arsenal - Ramsey in particular - is a scary prospect but Mata has the fixtures to shine & will finally be in his favorite position.

The goal keepers are decent, I prefer keeps who are gonna be busy anyway and those two will be busy with saves so that's good. The defense, I don't know about davies if he's actually so nailed on at spurs. What I really want to bring up is Pelle who you have. I am a huge Italy fan so I know a bit about Pelle. Pelle has never really been great at all in his homeland and it's only when he really got into that dutch league he was scoring goals for so much fun, with like 55 in 66 games. I really don't know how he'll be in England. He actually has a lot of attributes that will work well in this league, but I just don't know if as he is in a tougher league, he'll go back to them days where he was just god awful, but it's a decent punt to take a chance on it's just the point I want to bring up, he's not in the dutch league anymore and we all known guys who were lighting up the dutch league and came to england and did basically, nothing

I watched highlights of Pele & his goals all looked so boringly average, taps ins with little movement etc.

It came down to Debuchy + Pelle vs Ferdinand + Giroud, and I'm just hoping that since Pelle has such good fixtures he'll be able to scrape along and provide ok value for £7.5m, and that Debuchy scores/assists in the first half of the season.

If Pelle sucks I'll just switch to Remy and hope QPR provide him with firepower.

      Howard

      Coleman, Terry, Cahill, Baines

      Hazard, Fabregas, Ramsey,

      Costa, Lukaku, Rooney

When selecting players, I tend to look at their manager as well, if that makes sense. So for example, i'd be confident in having a few spurs players in this year, as I rate the manager, Newcastle i'm iffy about as I don't rate theirs much at all. The players can be good, but it may be in spite of the manager.

Which leads me on to Swansea, how do people honestly see them doing this year? I think Bony and Siggy are fine prospects, but the manager worries me tbh. Little managerial experience and facing a full season. He did well enough last season and the team played some attacking football, but was that a flash in the pan affect of a new manager or will it be sustainable...

Colour me a bit worried. Simerly i'd have worries over Hull this year, Bruce strikes me as an impact manager who looks good for a certain period and then it comes apart.

Similar dilemma to me. Ordinarily I would say B. However I feel as though I need the more expensive player so I have more flexibility. I.e it's much easier to downgrade hazard (or Sanchez) to Ramsey/fan than it is to do the upgrade. If I start with 1 of haz/Sanchez, I just like I'm in a better position. So I suppose I would have to say A.

What are people's thoughts on City's starting strikers then? Not promising that Aguero will be fit in time from what Pellegrini previously said, which means we're likely to see Dzeko - Jovetic up front.

What happens when Aguero returns? I always thought Dzeko - Aguero would be the main partnership but can Jovetic really be dropped when he's playing immense?

Problem is which one would he eventually drop? Aguero is the main man, and one of the PL's best, so who would be ousted?

Arguable that Jovetic and Aguero are similar players, plus City may not play strictly with two up top. It's a minefield.

But on talent alone, i'd have thought Aguero and Jovetic would be ahead in the pecking order, even if Dzeko is a fine player.

What are people currently seeing as their 6 week RMT scores? Current squad is 310, just wondering how that compares to others,?

Mine was around 306, but I don't read into too much because in defence I haven't gone for the "big hitters", more cheap alternatives.

That's interesting as I have gone heavy at the back so just goes to show how tight it is even with different strategies.

List 3 players who you think will surprise everyone this season on FPL.

    For me:

    Henderson
    Jovetic
    Schurrle

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Schurrle does well

Don't think any of them would be a surprise tbh. The top 2 are expected to do well....

    RMT please.

    Krul - Mannone
    Debuchy - B Davies - Lovren - Bruce - Wisdom
    Mata - Sigurdsson - Hazard - Eriksen - Albrighton
Rooney - Dzeko - Diego Costa

Planning to line up 3-4-3 with the occasional rotation depending on fixtures.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Guess I'd go with Terry. The only word against him is he's old. Surely that won't matter at the beginning of the season?
