With the season now just a fortnight away, we turn our attentions to a number of kindly priced midfielders in our latest article for members. Picking the right combinations in the mid-price bracket looks crucial to a strong start and with Fantasy managers debating the merits of a number of targets, we scour the statistics to assess their previous form.

For the purpose of this article, we’ve selected seven midfielders, no more than 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, who have proven popular picks so far and/or are set for some favourable opening fixtures – potentially affording them the chance to hand us an early-season bandwagon. Comparing their respective statistics, we also dig deeper into seasons gone by in our attempt to ascertain the best options for our initial lineups.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Where is Sigurdsson going to play in the Swansea midfield?

Will he be as far forward as n.10?

Just got home from the Emirates cup my god anyone with Giroud in their team get him out now. I know he's suppose to not be ready but he was bad. Also Sanchez looked very lively and good on the ball. But I'm guessing most of you watched it anyway.

I thought Alexis was one of the brighter sparks in a bad Arsenal performance. The difference with the youthful team who'd been training all summer yesterday, and this more senior side today was obvious. Wenger has some work to do to get the starting XI in shape.

Was a poor performance, but he's only been back in training for three or four days. Wenger says he might not even be ready for the Community Shield and that's a week away.

Bony may be a better pick to start GW1.

Yeah Giroud looked terrible, there wasn't even a glimmer of anything inspiring to go on. Sanchez was lively, but really think we need to see him play as a striker from the start with a good Arsenal team behind him, to see how is gets on.

Reading this in Sir Alex's autobiography, exactly what Moyes lacked!

''No team ever entered Old Trafford thinking United might be persuaded to give in. There was no comfort to be gained from thinking we could be demoralised. Leading 1-0 or 2-1 the opposition manager would know he faces a final 15 minutes in which we would go hell for leather. That fear factor was always there. By going for the throat and shooing bodies into the box, we would pose the question: can you handle it?''

What a man! LVG should get this back tho!

How to create your very own rotation spreadsheet with ease.

I have never seen this strategy posted before on this site, and I've just discovered it, and I personally love it. Of course however, I have seen people post about changing the numbers in the ticker, but not like this.

    1) Head over to our very own season ticker on the site.

    2) Click on the 'fixture difficulties' tab.

    3) Put a 1 in each of the fixtures which you want to highlight in both the home and away categories. For example, if you want to highlight just the home games you'd put a 1 in their boxes.

    4) Put a 0 in all the away boxes.

    5) Now all the home games are now blue, whilst the away fixtures are in white.

Another use could be for fixture strength rotation. A 1 would be for all the games where you'd play your defender against and a 0 for all the hard fixtures which you wouldn't want to play a defender in.

I can't seem to stop tinkering.

This is the latest incarnation of my team.

I would appreciate some feedback for those that have some time:

    Krul | Foster
    Shaw | Clyne | Huth | Taylor | Simpson
    Hazard | Mata | Eriksen | Arnautovic | Hoilett
    Rooney | Giroud | Bony

Not sure about Newcastle/WBA GK rotation, their defences don't seem particularly strong, perhaps just DDG or Bego and 4.0 is a better option for now?

Shaw not certain of starting the season in the first XI
Clyne overpriced because of the state of Southampton's defence
I like the Huth and Taylor matchup, should be an excellent rotation
Simpson seems good value at QPR if he can keep playing an aggressive fullback role

Hazard, Mata and Eriksen are all fairly safe bets
Arnautovic may do quite well with nice opening fixtures, although Sigurdsson has shown much more in pre season
Hoilett has been impressive so far in pre season and could be an excellent budget option

      Rooney is just logical
Giroud is being outshone by teammates, but should be involved to some degree in Arsenal's many goals
Bony a slight differential, but a very good one and should take advantage of some of the creativity that has been injected into Swansea's midfield

      Overall 6/10

        here goes

        Krul/foster

Same as above for keepers, Shaw, Clyne, Hazard, Eriksen and Rooney.

Be careful of Evans in defence if Vermaelen ends up being signed, otherwise he's a decent option. You could always go for DDG as a lone keeper and cut down to just 1 united defender, this would probably give you better returns than your current keeper rotation and allow you to invest in other promising defenders.

Sunderland's early fixtures aren't terrific, with a lot of their home games being against top 6 teams. This make O'Shea slightly less appealing. Also, if you wanted a Sunderland defender, perhaps van Aanholt is the better option because of his aggressive runs down the wing and also the new changes to bonus which benefit fullbacks over centre backs.

Wisdom has a decent chance of starting the season, but keep an eye out closer to the start of the season and many people will give good opinions on nailed on 4.0 defenders.

With the holes I've poked in your current defence, I'd probably fill them with a Stoke/Swansea rotation. Taylor for Swansea is the obvious choice, but the best option from Stoke is a bit up in the air. Currently, I am on Cameron until advised otherwise, but Huth could be a steal this season if you're willing to pay the extra 0.5.

Depending on how much you want to spend in defence, the remaining spot can go 3 different ways. You can either go for a premium Chelsea defender, Caulker/Ward/Davies in the mid price bracket, or Simpson/van Aanholt/Mariappa or a 4.0 in the budget bracket.

Tadic has a great record in recent seasons, but form in the Eridivisie doesn't always translate to form in the EPL, especially when you're put in a team that is rebuilding as opposed to a team that is challenging for Champions league.

Snodgrass is a good early option that can be moved along to the next decent bandwagon once his fixtures worsen or if his scoring isn't up to standard.

Albrighton looks the most likely to get attacking returns of the 4.5's this season, so he's worth having as midfield backup.

Monitor Sturridge's fitness leading into GW1. I currently have him, but I'm more than ready to replace him if he's not going to be fully fit.

Remy could do well given that he should start every week for QPR (which wasn't going to happen at Liverpool). Perhaps there are better options that are only slightly more expensive, though.

If I had to give you a team that was similar to yours that would hopefully improve your current draft, it would be:

DDG 4.0 (Murphy from QPR is the one I have)
Evans Cameron/Huth N. Taylor van Aanholt Wisdom
          Hazard Eriksen Ramsey Snodgrass Albrighton
          Sturridge Rooney Jovetic

Jovetic could be swapped to Remy once Aguero is back, or to Dzeko/Bony/Giroud if you have the funds, Snodgrass could be swapped to Sigurdsson if he starts well.

The other variation to this is if you swap Sturridge to Bony/Dzeko and Snodgrass to Fabregas/Mata.

Hope all of this helped 🙂

I don't believe he's nailed on. It seems to make a guess, Valencia maybe the one doing that RWB role a lot. For the world cup, LVG had Kuyt doing that and Valencia in terms of his work ethic is similar to Kuyt so I quicker believe it's Valencia over Rafael at this time

    Krul - Mannone
    Debuchy - B Davies - Lovren - Vlaar - Wisdom
    Sanchez - Sigurdsson - Hazard - Eriksen - Albrighton
    Rooney - Dzeko - Giroud

Planning to line up 3-4-3 with the occasional rotation depending on fixtures.

Would ideally like to bring in Mata somewhere but I'm not sure what is the best way to do this.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I am surprised no one is looking at Gomis so I thought I'd try to convince you.

Firstly, I am not a Swansea fan but after watching him against Reading yesterday I feel i need to share my thoughts...

He played up front with Bony and was much better than the Ivorian. He is so physical it is incredible. He is a lump of muscle. He can hold the ball up brilliantly. There was no competition between him and the Reading defenders. Obviously this is not Premier League standard but I don't think he will have a problem. I can see Swansea going long ball to him in tough matches and this would increase his appeal?

Some may be concerned over his game time. Firstly, Bony may leave, if so I think he is a definite for me. Also I think that the two would play together, They didn't work up front together but I think Bony could drop in behind. From what I saw of Gomis he couldn't play in the hole and so would always be an out and out striker.

Also, he is quick. His goal was a cheeky chip after racing the Reading defence and leaving them dead. This goal brings me on to his technical ability. He was comfortable taking touches and dribbling and he also cracked a few good shots off. He seems the complete player.

He scored 14 goals in the French league last season and would have averaged 3.8 points per app. But with better service I can see it being even higher this season. At 1.5 cheaper than Bony I really think he is worth a punt!

This is spot on, he really is worth it, they have two nice games after that Man united game, home games against Burnley and WBA, if that's not worth a punt, I don't know what is

I can't see Markovic being played as a CAM, he'll be eased in. I can see Falanagan playing against Dortmund and starting RB GW1. Moreno will take time to settle too, but has more potential than Enrique, while both are suspect defensively Moreno has pace to make up for his lapses and will actually listen to the back four and other team mates. I can see Rodgers changing the back four early just because he needs to get it settled, playing the players that were poor last season and before that isn't really an option. It's important especially in a 4-4-2 diamond were the fullbacks provide the width, Johnson and Enrique would be poor choices for that.

A Chelsea defender is not essential, Pelle could be glorious, and Arnie has great fixtures. Hazard and Sturridge are quality players, but make sure their fit at the start of the season.

With Spurs, I think people believe that Pochettino will make Spurs keep a decent amount of Clean Sheets like what he did at Southampton last year. His high pressing game helped them keep like 15 Clean Sheets and if he brings it to Spurs, I don't see why they can't do the same so he sounds good as a place holder with a goal threat as a bonus
