With the season now just a fortnight away, we turn our attentions to a number of kindly priced midfielders in our latest article for members. Picking the right combinations in the mid-price bracket looks crucial to a strong start and with Fantasy managers debating the merits of a number of targets, we scour the statistics to assess their previous form.

For the purpose of this article, we’ve selected seven midfielders, no more than 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, who have proven popular picks so far and/or are set for some favourable opening fixtures – potentially affording them the chance to hand us an early-season bandwagon. Comparing their respective statistics, we also dig deeper into seasons gone by in our attempt to ascertain the best options for our initial lineups.

    Recommendation:

    A) Shaw, Debuchy, Lovren, Duff, Van Aanholt (cover for the top 5 teams)

    B) Shaw, Lescott, Ward, Van Aanholt, Pieters (better rotations)

Go for B if they rotate better, would be my advice.

Any chance of a late night RMT?

    Begovic, £4.0m.
    Evans, Mariappa, Simpson, Cameron, O'Shea.
    Alexis, Hazard, Mata, Sigurdsson, Albrighton.
    Rooney, Diego Costa, Austin.

    £0.5m in the bank.

      needs more ramsey 😉

Cameron I have my doubts but who knows atm...id upgrade albrighton to davis/jwp/hoillett cos you may not be comfortable playing austin all the time...

or upgrade one of the 4.5 defs to ward/huth/clyne/caulker

It's a pretty decent team. Only the backline in terms of them being nailed on is a problem. I don't know how nailed on Mariappa, Simpson and Cameron, Especially those two since QPR is getting Isla on loan and Bardsley may give Cameron huge competition for that RB spot

8.5/10 (the extra 0.5 is for having 0.5 ITB)

you could have 1.0 mil in the bank with O'shea to Van Aanholt?

Does look good. The obvious question marks are over the players who may not play; Mariappa, Cameron; ...Albrighton maybe? Can't fault much of the rest but I'm not going to jump in too soon with Costa, not with Chelsea's record of ruining good strikers.

Front looks fine. I would be stunned if we don't buy a replacement for Mariappa, and even if we don't buy one by the start of GW1 I think TP will do so before the end of the window so I would not go into the season counting on him under any circumstance. Isla could render Simpson useless. Cameron we know. Just tweak the back line accordingly.

Why O'Shea over van Aanholt, Parm?

Looks like that's where I'll invest my money then, the question is, Ward or Dann?

Also, O'Shea over van Aanholt is for purely sentimental purposes, and the fact he's captain 😉

Ward, no question. He's arguably our best player, and does hang out on the edge of the box quite a bit - and always a shout at playing OOP as a CDM - I could see him in line for a little bit more attacking returns this season. He will only get better.

    Notes From Arsenal v Monaco

    1) As things currently stand, Wenger favours Calum Chambers as a centre-back or central midfield - not too keen on him at right-back. He looks very capable of playing either position - good passing range, aerial ability, positional sense, strength and one-on-one tackling ability. Hector Bellerin is currently the understudy to Debuchy, however if we sign another defender he may get loaned out.

    2) Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain look better than they have done for a while. Could turn out to be interesting punts at some point in the season, as Wenger has put a lot of faith in their ability so they will get minutes.

    3) Aaron Ramsey is the main man. He has played the most minutes in pre-season and looks sharp, and appears to be pacing himself nicely. Wasn't at his best today due to the short turnaround and very disjointed structure we had today, but he looks all set to star once the season kicks off. Worringly though, he played the whole 90 minutes after playing 60 yesterday. Wenger needs to stop being stubborn and give him the proper rest to that he doesn't risk injury again, which would prove cataclysmic.

    4) Alexis is at his best cutting in from the right/left. From the wide areas Alexis uses his great industry to press opponents and win back the ball, which will help the team's overall balance. He can also utilise his power and dribbling ability to full potential from these positions. Being the main striker would hinder him and make him easier to take out of the game - he must play either as a wide forward or a support striker.

    5) Giroud is completely un-match fit at the moment. After the match Wenger said: "Today at least he was not ready at all." I believe Giroud won't start against City or Palace because of this (was slated yesterday for bringing up the possibility 🙄 ). Then when you consider the run of hard fixtures we have - which Giroud is allergic to - I'm not so sure he is a great option for fantasy at the beginning of the season. I expect Sanogo to play up front and possibly Alexis too (although I'd rather him play out wide). Wait for him to regain his fitness and form and for the fixtures to pick up. At this point in time Alexis and Ramsey are the men to have.

Harsh to perhaps compare the two performances given that six of the starting XI versus Monaco had been to the World Cup this summer, BUT I do fear that Arsenal's probable starting XI is a little too static at times and could be improved with some youthful enthusiasm. We saw on Saturday how frightening pace can be. For example if we see Campbell in place of Cazorla on the left it would be much more promising for Ozil + Ramsey as fantasy prospects and they'd have a lot more time and space in the centre of the field as Campbell and Sanchez can stretch opposition defences (Ramsey especially can make his bursting runs into more gaps). Never been sold on Giroud and I feel we need a striker who is both physical and pacey - Sanogo does fit that mould but I'm not naive to think enough he's ready for the first team yet.

But I would say at the moment Ramsey is the man to own at Arsenal because he's got a full pre-season behind him, fresher Arsenal's other midfield options, and has already impressed in friendlies.

I might be a million comments down the pecking order, but i think asking for "rmt" and discussing premium option midfielders is conpletely missing the point of the article/articles. I think there should be a discussion forum..as in a general place to chat etc, and leave the majority of article pages solely deal with what has been discussed. Anyway, very insightful article and i think sunderlands johnson is really capable of delivering..its just a mattr of if he can keep the head dwn and focused and if poyet sticks with him. I think mccarthy for everton could offer serious potential. Unfortunately he wont make my mid. Wish i had one more place, he would def get it.

It's not all RMT and mid price mids discussion. And when the RMT post do collect a lot of comments they usually involve people who have engaged in the posts and discussion with other regulars. A lot of people who just blurt out a RMT get ignored.

Although difficult. But anyway, ya hes streaky indeed..shame, he was at man city not so long ago so has undoubted quality..can pop up with a double haul and then do nothinh a few weeks after. Maybe gus can sort it out for us.

there should be a super easily accessible faq sheet for everyone...the problem with the current system is hot topics disappear very quickly from plain view and many wouldn't check the hot topics before posting such questions anyway...needs to be waaaay be accessible for everyone (familiar or unfamiliar) with the site to see

Agree I think the hot topics need to be more eye-catching on the homepage and there needs to be less of them. Leave something like a discussion on 9m midfielders so it doesn't disappear after 12 hours.

thing is the pages on the articles would move so slowly then - everyone wants quick replies and that wouldn't happen with the system you are proposing...

honestly I feel its best to stick to the "kiss" principle - it would just create more issues...

      but interesting idea nonetheless

Yeah dnt get me wrong, i love this whole thing, but just think if there was some more user friendly way to do it, it would help a lot..couldeven setup some kind of favebook type platform or copy something that is used to dealing with numbers. I know its difficult though. Ps. Barkley is a bargain at 7 😀

    Ramsey Fabregas ______ Siggy 4.5
    Sturridge Rooney ______

Have 16.5 to spend on those 2 spots, would you go

      B)

Having Jovetic at 8 for GW1 and 2 is a punt but I think its a good one and allows you to monitor the sub 8.0 mil striker market in GW1/2. If Gomis or Pelle take off early (or anyone else for that matter) you can easilt ship out Jovetic for them.

Double Liverpool attack is a good bet for GW1 at least (just monitor the Sturridge hammy injury)

I need a defender to cover some fixtures, which one do you thinks better?

Southampton - whm swa QPR SUN LEI avl

Burnley - SUN wba lei WHM HUL AVL qpr

Obviously I'd rather trust Southampton's defence, but Burnley are 0.5 cheaper.

Because I have 4 defenders nailed in my team. Just need a defender to cover the bad fixtures and Burnley can cover one more bad fixture, but they are worse defensively than Southampton.

If you are looking at this as your 5th spot I would recommend going Shackell and saving the .5.

I do think Clyne is a great option at 5.0 early doors with their fixtures and his attacking ability, though.

Koeman is an attacking manager who will probably centre the team around Tadic, whom he must know well from the Eredivisie. Should be on pens too this season. Reckon he's gonna do well, just too pricey as a punt or for a 4th midfielder with the other options.

Spot on. Wait and see especially with a tough first fixture at Anfield. If he looks bright but blanks you could do well to maybe see him drop .1 or .2 and then bring him in for GW2 when their kind run begins.
