634x258 Great Expectations

After breaking into the Liverpool first-team under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13, hopes were high that Raheem Sterling would announce himself as a major contender for our Fantasy teams last season. The youngster’s fortunes suffered at the start of the campaign, though, and while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge tore opposition back lines apart, Sterling fell down the pecking order – over the first 12 Gameweeks, he mustered just one start and six second-half sub appearances for the Merseysiders.

A tactical tweak from Rodgers brought the teenager back into the first-team frame. Sterling subsequently started 23 of the remaining 26 league outings and was drafted off the bench in the other three fixtures, underlining just how crucial he became as the Anfield outfit finished second behind champions Manchester City after scoring 101 goals.

Key Factors

    • This time around, there seems no doubt Sterling will have a significant part to play. With Suarez departing for Barcelona and Sturridge’s propensity for injuries already forcing him out action, the teenager has so far struck twice during the club’s tour of the US. A series of displays have already persuaded 23% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up the midfielder, with Rodgers enthusing after a recent game against United:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

    • Rodgers’ tactical tinkering works in the youngster’s favour. Whether out wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or fielded at the tip of a midfield diamond, his versatility ensures he will rarely be kept out of the Reds’ starting XI. With an influx of new signings potentially taking their time to settle, Rodgers will look to the teenager to step up as a key performer from the outset.

    • Further analysis of Sterling’s stats from Gameweek 13 bodes very well. Having cemented his role in the first XI, he produced 106 touches in the box in the final 26 fixtures – third amongst midfielders – and was fourth for shots on target (21) and goals (nine) over that period amongst midfielders. Whilst Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard all scored more across that time frame, the trio relied heavily on penalties or set-pieces to boost their points potential – essentially, Sterling scored more goals from open play from Gameweek 13 onwards than any other midfielder in the league.

    • In spite of his tender years, Sterling has clearly developed over the last two seasons – particularly in front of goal. His shot accuracy of 26.5% in 2012/13 leapt to 48.9% last term, while he’s clearly far more clinical when face-to-face with the opposition keeper; after scoring just 5.9% of his efforts in his debut year, the Liverpool midfielder improved significantly and netted 20% of his efforts in 2013/14. With his successful dribble rate also on the up (from 40% to 59.2%) it’s clear that, as the years progress, he’s ever-improving his output under Rodgers’ guidance.

    • The afore-mentioned lack of game time in the opening few months has ensured Sterling remains out of the premium bracket for now. While a cost of 8.5 in FPL makes him the eleventh most expensive midfield option, that price tag could still provide us with excellent value – it’s possible that, with Suarez gone, Gerrard’s number of penalties will drop significantly and with just 0.5 difference between the pair, Sterling’s more advanced role could elevate him as the main man in the Merseysiders midfield. Bearing in mind all 13 of Gerrard’s goals in 2013/14 arrived from dead-ball situations (10 spot-kicks and three free-kicks), he’s clearly far more reliant on set-pieces.

Just a few notes on Austin's scoring pattern's for those considering him...

He scored 14 goals at home, and 5 away last year (1 in the cup)... so he clearly favours playing at Loftus Road...

Overall he seems very streaky... but once he's gets going, he seems to go on good scoring runs...

Last year, he didn't score in the Championship until the 6th game into the season... but when he got his first, he then went on to score 6 goals in 6 games...

Then he went 4 games without a goal... after which he then scored 5 goals in 7...

A couple of blanks, then 3 in 2... then 3 blanks, then 5 in 5...

    You get the picture...

Granted it's a tougher league, but on this evidence, it's a mixed bag... he might not make the most of his early good fixtures if his slow start last season is anything to go by... BUT if he CAN get off to a scoring start he might just be able to sustain it with his good early home fixtures given that he has proven to be a streaky scorer... and for those who are waiting to see what happens first, it might just pay to get him in as soon as he starts scoring...

The season before last, he exploded out of the blocks for Burnley... scoring 17 goals in his first 14 league games on his way to a 28 goal season...

I kno pre season means VERY little but if you're theory includes his pre season as a start to a streak he might be well worth the early investment

Terry scored 172pts last year. If you can find me a midfielder of forward for 6.5m that is guaranteed that kind of score I'll be amazed. Lukaku got 15 goals, 9 assists last year and still got less.

exactly my problem with baines. best do it that way and see which cheap defs or mids emerge.

easier to budget down if needed too. of all the 6m mids that people are talking about they can't all explode so i'll sit and see.

I think they would.. And anyway that's not really important. You can have an expensive defence and still have a strong team where your cheapest regular playing mid/fwd is 6m. Just meant going 4-4-2, which I think I will

          From last season:
          Terry (172) + El Ahmadi (69) = 241
          Fonte (149) + Puncheon (131) = 280

Fonte actually started at 4.0 (not 4.5) and Puncheon ended at a high of 5.4. Cheaper and more points.

I set up a team but the interface seems pretty glitchy. I decided to go 3-4-3 from the default 4-4-2 and it just erased 2 players, after I'd saved the team. And now under a 3-4-3, my bench requires a defender, midfielder, AND a striker. 4 strikers. I have to play with a weakened bench as the cheapest striker is 7.5 or something where the cheapest defenders are 3, thus weakening my midfielder on the bench as well.

    Sorry...that self posted

    GK Guzan / Foster switching

    DEF CP x 2 / QPR x 2 switching and always Evans

MID Mata Hazard Ramsey (or Stirling) with QPR / CP switching for fourth (Hoilett / Jedinak)

FWD Rooney / DC / Pele or Austin

My problem is I have decided that QPR and Crystal Palace rotate well and are cheap so I have only 1 quality defender and will swap QPR/Crystal for the other two spots in a 3-4-3 formation.

Rest of team above......gets 212 on RMT but is it crazy???

no the majority don't have coleman or baines but as someone was making the point further up, 7.0 for that points haul is a bargain! Just cos its a defender doesn't mean they are overpriced!

Mannone and Krul is not that good a pairing they have difficult fixtures as a rotational pairing to begin with. Krul/Foster much better.

Collins is not nailed on, Sagna will likely share gametime too expensive at his price to not be a guaranteed starter

Herrera unlikely to score well as not in the mould of an attacking mid so assists and goals will be hard to come by.

Sagna should get starts to begin with, but phenomenon Zaba is rested and raring to go he is first choice. You might not want to start with a future problem.
Collins isn't first choice either. It's Tompkins and Reid.

Not a fan of Herrera or Barkley myself, but that's preference.

I wouldn't bother rotating anyone with DDG. Just play him every week.

Verm transfer is a long way from happening, and he's nursing a hamstring injury so doubt he'll be straight in the team anyway if he moves to Utd.

Liking the Siggy - Bojan combo, but Davis makes your MF a bit weak. Might have to re-think that

I don't know about rested a lot, but I would definitely have thought that Cahill will be rested less than JT. Especially now that there's more cover in defence, I can see terry being rested in some of the easier games to keep him fresh for the big matches

    REPOST:
How about this team for GW1?
    Begovic
    Luis Evans Chester
    Sanchez Hazard(vc) Eriksen Siggurdson
    Rooney(c) Dzeko Lukaku

    Bench: Gilks,El Ahmadi,Wisdom,Moore.

    Key points:
1.Going for Lukaku despite tough fixtures as there'nt too many reliable options below options...also,Everton have City and Chelsea to play at home which means they should be able to score.Bony is another option but two Swansea attackers is overkill.
2.Hazard instead of Fabregas because of uncertainty regarding Fabregas' position.
    3.Luis because I'm dead sure he'll start.
4.Always like to go light in defense at the start.

    Thoughts?

How tight will the Southampton back line be this season do you think? Is Koeman known to be defensive or attack minded.

Tempted by Clyne at 5.0. Always impressed me when I saw him. Has good assist potential and dare I say it always played better than Shaw in my opinion.
