Bojan Krkic scores for the third successive match as Stoke brush aside Real Betis at the Britannia. Elsewhere, Everton winless summer continues with a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Celta Vigo, with Aiden McGeady grabbing the Toffees’ only goal:

Bojan Strikes Again for Potters
Stoke’s summer signing from Barcelona continued his excellent pre-season form by scoring for the third time in as many appearances last night. Bojan was fielded on the right of a 4-2-3-1 formation against Real Betis, with Stephen Ireland behind lone forward Mame Biram Diouf and Marko Arnautovic on the left – the new boy also played a part in the hosts’ first in a 2-0 triumph after playing in Phil Bardsley, who provided the assist for fellow full-back Erik Pieters.

Available for 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Bojan’s ownership has noticeably risen over the last few days as Fantasy managers take advantage of his budget price tag. Now sitting in over 10% of FPL teams, the Spaniard is the ninth most popular frontman thus far and the bandwagon is certainly backed by the Potters’ opening fixtures – Mark Hughes’ side play host to (AVL, LEI, NEW, SWA, WHM, BUR) in the first 12 Gameweeks in a run that pits them against just three of last season’s top eight over that period.

Certainly, there’s no questioning Bojan’s form and, as the highlights against Schalke,Blackburn and Betis show, his strikes have been far more than mere tap-ins. The main downside is the poor away form that saw Hughes’ side scored just 18 times on their travels last season; many owners may be persuaded to rotate the Spaniard on the road unless he can inspire a turnaround in fortunes.

After the game, Hughes was understandably enthused by the 24-year-old’s display and reckons he’ll become more influential as the months progress:

“He’s a good player, but we knew that when we were trying to bring him here in the summer. He has grabbed the headlines again and rightly so because he put in another really good performance and capped it off with another superbly taken goal. We can probably exploit his abilities in an even better way, but I am sure that will happen the more we play him and the more the other lads and him become accustomed to what they are each trying to do. It is still early days with him and there is a lot of work to be done yet, but from what we have seen so far we are really encouraged because he has come in and made a good impression on everybody here at the club.”

In terms of team selection, Hughes continues to ease Geoff Cameron and Peter Odemwingie into action after both featured in the summer World Cup. After handing the duo their first taste of action at the weekend, the Potters boss threw the pair on after the break and while Cameron (at 4.5 in FPL) may yet nail down the right-back berth in the long run, Bardsley seems to be in the driving seat after featuring throughout pre-season. Hughes’ decision to pair Ryan Shawcross with Marc Wilson at centre-half was somewhat surprising – Robert Huth was afforded just six minutes off the bench, coming on as a late sub for the injured Marc Muniesa.

McGeady Nets in Toffees Loss
It’s four summer friendlies without a win for the Toffees after last night’s 3-1 home loss to Celta Vigo. At the back, Roberto Martinez was without Seamus Coleman due to a hamstring problem once again, while the Toffees boss chose to rest Phil Jagielka, affording John Stones the chance to partner Sylvain Distin in central defence. Furthermore, with both Leighton Baines and Tim Howard fielded for 45 minutes apiece, it’s fair to say the Merseysiders’ backline was far from full strength last night. Further up the field, Martinez continued with Steven Naismith as the lone striker, though Romelu Lukaku is expected to join the action next weekend in the final summer friendly against SC Paderborn, while Ross Barkley hit the woodwork in his first full 90 minutes of the summer.

A disappointing result, then, though Martinez’ under-strength backline goes some way to explaining the capitulation – nonetheless, Everton’s form is a little disconcerting ahead of games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Palace, Liverpool and United in the opening seven fixtures.

After the game, the Toffees boss explained why he chose to rest Jagielka and Steven Pienaar for the loss:

“Phil and Stevie were involved on Sunday at Goodison and it was always the plan to work through the week and make sure they are ready for the game in Germany [against SC Paderborn] on Saturday.”

    WBA INJURY UPDATES

ALAN Irvine has confirmed Chris Brunt will remain as captain this season - as the Hawthorns boss reflects on the Baggies' injury situation.

"It was absolutely fantastic to get 90 minutes from Chris Brunt,” said Irvine.

"Tuesday's game was as much for him as it was for anyone else.

“We decided to rest as many as we could and it was terrific for Chris to play 90 minutes - a big bonus for us.

"Chris will absolutely be our captain. There's absolutely no reason to change it. I can't see any reason whatsoever to do it.

"He has the respect of the changing room, he's done a great job as captain for many years so I have no intention to make any changes.”

But while the Albion chief has no doubts about Brunt's captaincy he admits injuries are causing him a headache at centre-half with Gareth McAuley (tight calf) and Joleon Lescott (knee) racing against time to be fit to face Sunderland in nine days' time.

"Gareth McAuley trained yesterday but it was asking far too much for him to be involved on Tuesday," added Irvine.

"Hopefully he will be training again today.

"I think making the first game of the season is a big ask for Gareth to be perfectly honest.

"He's missed so much pre-season that it is very difficult to throw him in.

"Joleon Lescott is still not training.

"He is still suffering with a knee problem.

"We don't think it is anything major but he has a bit of fluid on his knee.

"We are hopeful he will be back soon.

"He has done a bit more - but it is a tall order.

"It depends what happens over the next nine days but if you're asking me now whether they'll make it, it is 'probably not'.

"We do have options because Chris Baird can play there if we had a problem with Jonas [Olsson] or Craig Dawson.

"Chris can play centre-back and so can Andre Wisdom."

James Morrison (knee) remains sidelined but Sebastien Pocognoli (multiple injuries) and Victor Anichebe (groin) could be available to face Porto on Saturday.

"James Morrison is still not training," said Irvine.

"Sebastien we expect to train today, and we will need to see what bumps and bruises we have got.

"Sebastien has multiple injuries. He will be fine - there was no reason to risk him at Port Vale - and I suspect he will train and be available for Saturday.

"Victor Anichebe, who was very good on Tuesday, and deserved a goal, felt a bit tight around his groin so hopefully we've prevented any further problems."

For the FPL veterans out there---

Does playing in a H2H league negatively impede your overall progress in FPL? Just signed up for my first one and I can see myself being forced to use a transfer that I have earmarked for another week just cos my H2H opponent has more 'heavy hitters' or has the in-form player.

Whats the best strategy? Just focus on your long-term game and leave that H2H match-up to fate? Or go for broke, edit you team and beat the hell outta you H2H opponent?

Is the general consensus that Bjoan will flop like he did at Ajax, AC and Roma? I am mighty tempted to get involved - but also have to remind myself that I usually end up with a punty third striker that I regret each season.

Highlights in the past have included Vaz Te, Anelka and Nugent.

    Quick Question:

Eriksen or Lamela. Tott mf is a must for the start of the season. Eriksen had a good season last time around.. whereas lamela has looked good in pre season… Same price.. Lamela could be a punt..

Yeah think Yaya down to Eriksen will sort this team out massively - I've gone for a similar mental-midfield approach in my team but even I left out Yaya - 11m is too much for him when your defence is possibly non-existent

Yeah price is the main thing, also if Aguero comes back he loses penalties. For me it's mostly the crazy 11m - somebody could have Sanchez (i know, unproven in PL but still) playing as a striker a lot of the time! Just seems like he's been priced out of the game now really.

    1) If you were set on going for a 4.5/4.0 GK from same club option, would you prefer Krul/Elliot or Foster/Myhill?

Azpi - Ward- Naylor - Chester- Moore

I was just wondering what I would do TBH... I quite like this for 24M:

          Clyne, Huth, Naylor, Chester, Caulker

Before you rule it out for the lack of "big" names... It rotates lovely for the first half of the season (well about GW7-8 from memory), where you will need to swap Clyne for 5M spurs and Chester for a Burnley. Have a look at the games it gives you before you discount it and remember that Huth and Caulker have goal threat.

    Eriksen or Arnautovic?

Both teams have a so-so start in terms of fixtures.
My head tells me Eriksen plays in a better team, plays in the hole and will therefore get more points over the course of the whole season.

However, Arnautovic at just 6.5 seems to offer great value! He only scored 16 points less than Eriksen last season and could really kick on and improve in his second season.

    Thoughts?

Aren't we all getting a bit carried away with Ashley Young? He's a world class player, yes. But he's going to be playing as a wing back. Also, United don't usually spend much money on players so if we spend 24m on a wing back you know Young is going to be sharing gametime with him. Much as I love him I think there may be better options.

      3 goals preseason.

      5.5M.

      THOSE fixtures.

Who is better for 5.5M in midfield?
