Arsenal yesterday announced their first foray into the summer transfer market, with the news that Ivory Coast star Gervinho will join the club later this week from French champions Lille “subject to a regulatory processâ€.

The move comes as little surprise; the Gunners are long-term admirers of the 24 year-old and speculation has been rife for a number of months that the player‘s move to London was imminent.

While the move is, undoubtedly, a positive one, it has been somewhat overshadowed by the ongoing transfer sagas involving both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. Arsenal are currently on a pre-season tour of Malaysia right now and when asked of the pair’s respective futures yesterday, Arsene Wenger remained positive that the two will stay for next season, though the rumours are likely to run and run.

In keeping with the low-key nature of Gervinho’s arrival, Wenger only had this to say:

“Gervinho has just joined up for training today at London Colney. He signed last Thursday, and has just come back from his holidays.”

The Statistics

Gervinho began his career as an 18 year old at Belgian side KSK Beveren where, over the course of a couple of seasons, he scored 14 goals and made 5 assists in 61 league appearances. A move to Ligue 1 followed, and two seasons at Le Mans brought the Ivorian 8 goals and 12 assists from 67 games before Lille came calling.

Once again, Gervinho lasted the two years, with last season, in particular, showing a marked increase in his ability to effect a game. On his way to helping the club win their first domestic double for 57 years, Gervinho was the only player to hit double figures for both goals and assists for Rudi Garcia’s all-conquering side, with 15 and 10 respectively.

He broke into the Ivory Coast side in 2008 and has subsequently played for his country 25 times, scoring 6 times and making 2 assists.

The Prospects

Lille’s favoured formation was 4-3-3 last term and, with an emphasis on attack either home or away, Gervinho was given license to wreak havoc. Predominantly right-footed, he played right of a front three for the majority of the campaign and may offer Theo Walcott competition for a starting berth in Wenger’s first XI, though 11 starts wide left last season suggest he will offer Arsenal more versatility.

Gervinho’s prospects for 2011/12 will clearly be influenced by the futures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. In the unlikely event of both players staying at the Emirates this season, his number of starts will perhaps, initially, be limited, but if the Arsenal skipper goes, Nasri could take over in the central role and leave a space wide left for Gervinho to make his own.

Despite missing just one league game last season, Andrei Arshavin scored just six goals and a series of lacklustre performances suggest the Russian is anything but a guaranteed starter. If both Nasri and Fabregas depart, however, Gervinho seems set for a starting role. The fact that the Arsenal boss was in the market for Velez Sarsfield playmaker Ricardo Alvarez indicates he is looking to fill any gap created by Fabregas’ possible departure to Barcelona and, despite missing out to Inter for the player‘s signature, Wenger is clearly intent on replenishing his squad.

In terms of pricing, Nasri came in at 7.5 and Walcott 7.0 last season and it’s likely FPL will rank Gervinho along the same lines when the prices for next season are revealed later this month. It’s clear Arsenal have bagged themselves a player that will offer creativity and goal threat in equal measure, though just how quickly he will adapt to the more physical Premier League, only time will tell.

The more Im thinking about it, probably a better chance of the fpl site just updating then FFS writing an article that states fpl will open 12 July 2011 at 1pm UK time.

      Can you imagine the chaos?

We will probably get the FFS article after the opening.

Very true, The site would crash if the opening time was posted here in advance, Least when they do open it and people post here its open there will be a steady flow of people rather than a massive rush due to everybody knowing about it.

As popular as this site is, surely the FPL site wouldn't crash under the weight of people from FFS all logging on within a few minutes. Think how many page views it has to cope with at 5pm on a Saturday during the season.

    Gervinho's hair is ridiculous.

re: "later this month" - I'm not worrying too much about that. If they want as many players as possible they'd be stupid not to get it up and running at least 4 weeks before the season starts. It'll surely be sometime this week.

Yeah, don't you know your hstory?

In 1932, everyone currently working for the Sun stabbed all the Manchester United supporters, and fed their cats something that made them very ill.

You should boycott the Sun for this reason, not because it's a bigotted, hate-filled idiot-rag.

But the ones that know about the protest, know what the paper did and still continue to buy the paper, go on their website or have anything to do with them really piss me off.

The thing is, why would you have to be a Liverpool supporter for this to affect your decision?

I didn't have my phone hacked by them, and ... well, if I didn't already avoid it like the plague, I'd boycott it anyway.

It's not so much what they did to who, it's the fact that they did it in the first place.

I know all about the boycott but i really don't see why entering a team for free to have a competition with the lads at work is such a bad thing?
The only reason i've entered it is because it's free, the lads at work have done it for a few seasons and there is a big cashpot to be won. Ihave missed out every other season as you had to pay.
Also at the time of the print out i think i was about 4/5 years old, i don't recall myself reading the papers at that age and i bet alot of lads my age don't even know about the boycott.

TBH it doesn't bother me who you support, as has been mentioned plenty of times already there are loads of reasons why some of us don't have anything to do with them. Personally I wouldn't even buy the times or subscribe to sky. Some people don't care though so each to their own.

However in answer to your questions, 'am I lining their pockets? Does it cost me to go on their website?'

You line their pockets by visiting their site. They do make a lot of money from this 'free game'

                  I agree.

This has all the earmarks of religious militancy. You know where people are all like "I believe in god", and then half the people decide that they like god so much that they're going to take a vow of silence, or flagellate themselves.

And then sooner or later there are rules about what you can or can't do, and if you don't follow those rules, you're not a real christian/muslim/whatever, and you're going to hell.

I think that because you support a football club, it doesn't mean that anything else follows neccessarily.

I think there are plenty of fine reasons to boycott the Sun, and this is one of them, but if you want to join the league it doesn't make you a bad person, or even a bad liverpool fan.

Imo this is a good signing for Arsenal although I think that signing a new manager would be the best for them..AW can´t think out of the box anymore(you may read out of France)!

Hope I´m wrong but I´m not seeing Arsenal having a competitive side against the others(ManU; ManC; Che; Liv) this year!

Surely the main question with Gervinho from an FPL point of view its where he is classified. As a forward he'll be a poor man's RVP but as a midfielder he could be awesome.

Meanwhile the main FPL question is why it will have the latest opening in history... overreaction?

Might be in the minority but i still don't think Hernandez will be playing that regularly next season, think he might go for a 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 more often than not, no chance I'll start with him in FPL, if he's playing & scoring regularly I might then think about him.

        Literature or Music.

        Specifically, either novels 1860 - 1960, or poetry 1670 -1770;

Baroque, and the split between Chiesa and Camra, with particular reference to Corelli Arcangelo.

I kind of know enough about that sort of thing. I'm lucky to have 2 history buffs as close friends.

One, I used to live with, and he's just really interesting. We'd be walking along in silence, and he'd come up with "Do you know about _____" and then explain it to me in a very "me" way.

I also get to borrow their books. Jeremy Paxman's book "The English" is really quite good.

Is "The English" actually about the English or the British?

The reason I ask is another of our fellow alumni, David Starkey, wrote book about the monarchy of England that dealt more with the British monarchy (ie post-union of the Crowns), and his programme about the British monarchy deals exclusively with the English lineage of the united crown, not touching the Scottish. You'd think being a Cambridge educated historian, he'd be aware of the difference between 'English' and 'British'

The guy is an-anti Scottish ar**hole though, as is evident by his numerous rants about the Scots, such as on Question Time a few years back.

It's about England specifically, and while it does obviously delve into history, it's more an open-ended question about what it means to be English.

I would agree with your mate. I think that although you need some flair players in the team, Raul isn't built for the PL and it really frustrates me when I see him pull out of a tackle.

Also, with Lucas, Stevie, Spearing, Henderson, Adam and Aqua all able to play in CM, the £15m that we get from him could be added to the left flank fund 😀

I'm looking forward to the future especially with the young midfield we wll have. I was impressed with spearing the back end of last season and he did a superb job filling Gerrards boots. I'm slightly concerned who KK will play in the middle, i hear hendo played on the wing at the beg of last season maybe he will be put there for us.
In my opinion based on last season Lucas would be one of the first names on the team sheet. So it leaves 4 players fighting for the other spot (if hendo plays on the right).

I would say that atm, but then I think Adam will probably be in the team, so I think of a 4-3-3...

Got a couple of them to join the fpl when it opens.

LL you seem like a likable and informed chap with a decent FF opinion from past posts.... I respect your stance and views on the boycott...

But are you ok that I'm not as emotionally attached to what The Sun did as you are?

The actual tragedy is still a shocking memory.

But as I was never aware of or affected by the sun story, I don't feel the same need to boycott them, nor do I feel my non boycotting has any bearing in my supporter status. So I hope that's ok with you and we can chat in the future.

I guess it's because I was told not to buy it when I was young, it's kind of stuck with me.

If you've only just heard about it today I wouldn't expect you to completely cut it out of your life. Not sure if you read my post the other day, but if you have, hopefully next time you see the paper in a shop you could maybe think about buying the one next to it instead? 🙂

No supporter is better than another, whether they have a ST at Anfield or have never been to a game, as long as we all love the club we're all in the same boat 🙂

Cheers mate. Yeah I had a quick read but not all the links. As mentioned I'm in Aus so don't get the sun anyways.... But the owner of that paper owns most papers and online news sites, so I'd have to give up reading the news altogether.

When I lived in UK in 99/00 I went to several Pool games.... Awesome atmosphere and games!!!! Stood in the Kop and had a great time.

Looking forward to the season to start!

Just for my dad to win Euromillions tonight so we can get a house over in Australia and get flown over in our private jet over every weekend for the match...

Just gone onto FPL and some odd things are happening.

Team names are being blanked out on the table sometimes and icons are appearing in the wrong place.

This may indicate they're going through the updating process right now, which really should only take a few hours, if that.

After the central african republic shennigans of last year, how about we all welcome the world's newest country The Republic of South Sudan with the best present of all, the chance to be the top country in FPL for 2011/12.

I'm not going to go into an Akers style PR campaign on this, but thought I'd just put that thought out there.

South Sudan was formed mere days ago, its capital is Juba and it only has a small amount of corruption and bribery to sustain it compared to its neighbours.

The FPL and FFS are two different entities. FFS membership gives you fantastic stats and professional reviews. While their influence at FPL gives them some inside information and a vehicle for us to complain about dubious assists :). NDA's would restrict what and when they can share information.... It will be open eventually 🙂
