With the summer friendlies coming to an end yesterday evening, we’ve reintroduced the Team News tab to the top of the home page. To begin with, we’ve pencilled in our staring XIs for each club but these, and the team news blurbs, will be constantly updated as the information starts to flow in over the next few days:

Subequently, we’ve taken down the Pre-Season tab on the home page. We will, however, ensure the Pre-Season Guide remains available via this article in order to keep the info readily available for Fantasy managers looking for some last-minute reading ahead of Saturday’s kick-off.

Included are links to every pre-season game that has taken place, all our Scout Reports, Moving Target and Great Expectations articles over the summer and extensive articles on each of the three promoted sides. In addition, we’ve put together a brief “Scout Notes” synopsis of the main areas of concern for all 20 teams. Click here for our Pre-Season Guide.

Finally, we’ve listed the men in form in front of goal over the summer so far – the big question is, who’ll be this year’s Mauro Boselli?

6 goals – Lukas Jutkiewicz
5 goals – Glenn Murray, Stevan Jovetic
4 goals – Yaya Sanogo, Diego Costa, David Nugent, Wayne Rooney, Charlie Austin
3 goals – Marvin Sordell, John Terry, Marouane Chamakh, Fraizer Campbell, Wes Morgan, Aleksandar Kolarov, Ashley Young, Emmanuel Riviere, David Hoilett, Bojan Krkic, Steven Fletcher, Connor Wickham, Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado

Inter reject Spurs bid for Guarin

Inter have rejected an offer from Tottenham of €12m plus Roberto Soldado for Fredy Guarin, reports claim.

The Colombia international looks to be surplus to requirements at San Siro after trying to leave the club in January.

The midfielder attempted to force his way to Juventus during the winter window, but that was quashed by president Erick Thohir.

The bad blood between the owner and the player seems to have maintained over the months however, and rumours that Guarin will be sold this summer are ever-present.

Juve are thought to see the former Porto man as a replacement for Arturo Vidal, should he move to Manchester United later this month.

However Tuttosport report this morning the Spurs have tabled an offer for the 28-year-old that has been turned down by the Nerazzurri.

The Premier League outfit apparently offered Soldado plus €12m for Guarin, but Thohir is holding out for somewhere nearer €20m.

Mourinho has already decided which of his goalkeepers will start our opening Premier League game, but refused to confirm one way or another.

‘I played Thibaut for 90 minutes because he was injured and didn’t play last weekend,’ he said. ‘Petr played two matches in Turkey and the first half against Ferencvaros. Since he arrived Courtois has only played 45 minutes against Werder Bremen, he needs to play.

‘The fact Courtois played 90 minutes wasn’t me saying he’s first choice for Monday, it’s because he didn’t play the last three matches. The players don’t know (who’s first choice). When will I tell them? On Sunday.’

      -

      wait before choosing Courtois.

Far from nailed. Mariappa is prefered to him but was out of preseason with an injury. On top of that they signed Kelly who should also be above Williams in the pecking order.

    Any thoughts on this team?

    Foster (Krul)
    Jones, Chester, Vlaar (Yoshida, Taylor)
    Ramsey, Henderson, Mata, Siggy (Tadic)
    Sturridge (C), Rooney (V), Jovetic

I know my defence is weak, but taking a punt this week with next few weeks in mind, and I never usually have any big hitters in defence, only cheap almost certain starters.

I would say No. He'll play some games for sure, but usually if Hull go with the 5-3-2 (which has served them quite well).

The signingsof Snodgrass and Ince however (wide attacking players), suggest that 4-4-2 / 4-5-1 could be on the cards.

oh dear, that won't help his cause. I didn't see that. Maybe it's a Southampton thing, players just always score for them. Le Tissier & Lambert took about 70 penalties for them missing 2 between them

Back when Le Tissier took them, GK's saved penalties much less than today, though. Much much less. The number of penalties in Premier League by season has recently been about 1.5 times as high as it was in 90's, but the number of penalty saves is about 10 times as high.

Look at the post below. Scoring them all in English football was hardly exceptional at his day. How good he'd do against GK's of today, nobody knows.

good stats, but 51/52 is exceptional and better than anyone in any era.

I am confident his success would translate because he is one of very few players who had the ability to make a split second decision to change sides when he saw the keeper move.

Interestingly, I recall seeing World Cup stats somewhere, that suggested no such change over time in conversion rates. Can't be bothered to find those stats now, but if it indeed was so, then it means that whereas in PL the GK's were rubbish in penalties before 2000's, elsewhere in the world penalty taker's job has not become any harder since 1990's.

That would be another point to support the "inconclusive conclusion" that Le Tiss' was a loudly unproven penalty taker relative to his internationally proven colleagues, such as Litmanen, Del Piero and Zidane who had almost unspoiled record in _top international level_ too.

That ~80% conversion rate is to my understanding quite universal average. The historical averages for World Cup and European Championship are 71.2% and 84.6%, respectively.

That suggests strongly that scoring a penalty has indeed been very exceptionally easy in England in 90's (and possibly/probably before).

there could be another way of interpreting it. In the 1990s perhaps the penalty takers were just of a higher standard rather than the gk's being rubbish. Maybe it is something to do with the pressure back in those days, whereas now all the media attention, more cameras etc.. makes it harder.

I would also put for example Dave Beasant & Mark Crossley up against any modern keeper and would be confident they would save more pens now.

That the conversion rates in England have come to same level as they are elsewhere pretty much confirms that it is because of GK's having become better, as the game and particular aspects like set pieces have been developed better, not worse, in time. The game has become more scientific, so to say, and that applies to penalties. Another factor is that the England's international conversion rates were worse than average also in 90's. Although England also have their only penalty shootout victory in 90's (1996 v. Spain, with all converting), their penalty shootout record was still just 64% in 90's. I don't know how well they converted in play penalties. Le Tiss of course was not involved in those penalty shootouts, but this clearly tells that at least the other top English penalty takers were below rather than above average internationally.

                        Added notes:

                        1) That media attention hasn't seemingly made it any harder to players elsewhere. Pressure to penalty taker is largely set by the GK, however, and I could agree that that has become a bigger factor in PL during last 15 years.

                        2) Even if there was some factor of players in PL being better in penalties in 90's than in 2000's, which both data and common sense suggests is not the case, I have no doubt that it could _never_ explain such a massive gap. That the GK's saved almost no penalties at all must be at least partly explained by their lack of ability to save them. From 1992 to 2000, only 17 penalties were saved in PL. That's absolutely awful!

                        3) To search how much of it was affect of GK's and how much of players, it would be useful to compare the penalty conversion rates of the foreign players in their earlier league career, and then in PL; and similarly, how did the penalty conversion rates of English players change when they went abroad. Unfortunately I have no such data and don't know if anybody has seen it useful to gather it.

Okay. Had to come back to this still once. But I end this now, no more returning to this issue, particularly as it is of little important to FPL. But it was enjoyable to return to penalty statistics again. There is interesting research done on penalties that can catch my attention for long time once I start to read it.

Or, to put it differently, back when Le Tiss' took penalties, almost nobody ever missed a penalty in premier league.

Average penalty conversion rates in PL:

              1992-2002 94.0%
              2002-2014 79.6%

The season 2002/2003 is the first season when a significant number of penalties (9) is not converted. Before that the number was never higher than 5/season, and often as low as 2-3/season.

    Pellegrini:

"I don’t have a big decision to make on Sunday about the goalkeeper. I think that if you want to win something it’s very important you have two good players in each position in our team. I don’t understand why you are always talking about the goalkeeper and not talking about Sagna and Zabaleta, Clichy and Kolarov or Dzeko and Negredo."

"For me it’s really important to have a strong squad because we have to play so many games over the year that if you don’t have a strong squad it is impossible to win anything. After that I have to decide which is the best XI to start, normally we’ll change it every week."

    Jovetic:

"I know I'm good. I know I can play here. In the last few months of the season, when I was fit, I played well, every game. I have the manager's confidence and I feel stronger. I hope now the City fans will see the real Jovetić."

Wonder if it means anything that Pellegrini mentioned Dzeko and Negredo together?

the point might be that it implies jovetic is more likely to start and the other 2 compete for the other place (whilst aguero is out)

Of course - they're like for like. Traditional centre forwards.

Jovetic is more complete - a modern forward so he is vying for Agüero's spot.

          until Agüero is injured again.

I think we could see the two interchanged a little more frequently should Jovetic get off to a decent start.

          1) It keeps Agüero going with better time for recovery
          2) It keeps Jovetic in good condition and happy at the club

The "change it every week" bit tells me that Pellegrini wants to keep things fresh so they can get that elusive CL medal

Haha. I laughed at his response on rumours that Cambiasso is close to joining Leicester the other day too:

"But what's disappointing is that some clown somewhere down the line has leaked information that is sensitive."
"We like to try to do business in the right way and make sure all parties interests are looked after for the right reason.
"But for some reason, some balloon head has decided to leak it.
