Welcome to our annual attempt to pick the best and worst options in the Fantasy Premier League game and assess how the forthcoming Premier League season will shape up.

As usual many of  our last season predictions proved to be terrible.

Among the worst of our predictions was Mark’s assertion that Andreas Weimann would be the best differential and highest scoring budget forward in FPL and Paul’s belief that Roberto Soldado would finish the year as top Premier League goal scorer.

My forecast that Kolo Toure would be the best budget defender and Crystal Palace would be relegated proved equally embarrassing.

Applebonkers was also left with egg on his face by labelling Hull defender Curtis Davies as the worst signing of 2013/14, while Granville’s optimism that Iago Aspas would be the best differential in FPL was another of our top clangers.

There were some predictions we nailed, though. Evs correctly reckoned Southampton would overachieve, while Fulham would falter. Andy and Mark can also feel pleased for themselves for correctly naming Seamus Coleman as the best budget defender in FPL last season.

Hopefully we shall all do better with this series of predictions for the forthcoming Premier League campaign.

      Begovic

Terry, Chambers (I would prefer Cahill to Terry, thoughts?)

      Ramsey, Sterling

      Rooney, Costa

I think this should be a good 'spine' to the team that most would agree on. If you don't like a pick let us know why.

      Other players proposed so far:

Def - Naughton, Vergini, Blackett, Ferdinand, Dunne
Mid - Mata, Fabregas, Silva Eriksen, Holtby, Arnautovic, Ireland, Young, Henderson

        My votes for others:

        def: Caulker, shawcross

        attack: Bojan, jovetic

Begovic in goal, popular pick on here and solid fixture.

Chambers has to take a slot in defence. He is extremely good value for the first few, and a CS looks on the cards for this fixture.

I also believe one of Naughton, Blackett or James has to take a spot. All at 4.5 offer fantastic value, and we would expect a clean sheet from each of them. With the injuries in the respective teams, they have to have a shoe in for GW1 at least. My pick would be one of the United boys personally, given the fixture. Of course, you could stick Naughton in there too for another defender spot.

The final defender spot has to be taken by a Chelsea defender. Cahill is looking the most popular right now, however a punt on Ivanovic perhaps, since he loves scoring GW1.

For midfield, Young looks the flavour of the week. Either him or Sigurdsson should take the cheaper 4th midfield slot in my opinion.

I also believe Mata is a must for the scout picks this week, fixture is brilliant and he is a very popular pick. No brainer.

Ramsey has had a brilliant pre season, and is very popular. He is expected to do well, and would be one of my picks. Alternatively, Fábregas would be a good pick with their fixture. Especially since Oscar is out, he looks a starter at #10 for the opening game.

Sterling is the flair pick for me. Shown great form pre season, very energetic and against a loosely put together Southampton side.

Up front, you have to have Rooney. The fixture and his form combined provide captain material for almost everyone one here. He is a must. Similarly, I don't think you could go without Costa. Bagged a brace last game and against Burnley he could explode.

The final spot for me, goes to Sturridge, given the fixture. Leading the line for an attacking Liverpool side.

I would consider others like Lukaku to for a punt, or maybe for on the bench. Bojan is also popular, and IMO should be on the bench despite the fact I think he will flop.

What are you saying? After selling half of their first XI from the high end and having their most important player not willing to play, they have wisely spent £10M to a 2nd GK, £8M to a 30-year-old striker whose reputation is built completely on his last two seasons in a dominant club in the easiest scoring league in world, £12,5M to a solid 7-8 PL goal scorer, and now £6M to some never heard Romanian. Must be great times for Saints fans!

This is my last conundrum before lock in. Currently on Kruster but I think I'll change to Bego. Projections only put Kruster marginally ahead for the first 10 Gameweeks.

      I have similar decision:

      Mannone Green

      or

      Begovic 4.0

      Leaning to Beg

He's not able to get online much at the moment but I can try to get a message to him - what's up?
