Welcome to our annual attempt to pick the best and worst options in the Fantasy Premier League game and assess how the forthcoming Premier League season will shape up.

As usual many of  our last season predictions proved to be terrible.

Among the worst of our predictions was Mark’s assertion that Andreas Weimann would be the best differential and highest scoring budget forward in FPL and Paul’s belief that Roberto Soldado would finish the year as top Premier League goal scorer.

My forecast that Kolo Toure would be the best budget defender and Crystal Palace would be relegated proved equally embarrassing.

Applebonkers was also left with egg on his face by labelling Hull defender Curtis Davies as the worst signing of 2013/14, while Granville’s optimism that Iago Aspas would be the best differential in FPL was another of our top clangers.

There were some predictions we nailed, though. Evs correctly reckoned Southampton would overachieve, while Fulham would falter. Andy and Mark can also feel pleased for themselves for correctly naming Seamus Coleman as the best budget defender in FPL last season.

Hopefully we shall all do better with this series of predictions for the forthcoming Premier League campaign.

Jonty has put us as is his underachievers. Considering how many have called us a 'crisis club' doomed to relegation, I can't really see how that's possible 😉

I think we'll play 4-3-3 with Long out on one wing and Tadic on the other. J-Rod may well come in for Long when fit.

That sounds really daft ( not your suggestion ) the idea of playing a £12 million pound forward on the wing .

        I see it as
        Tadic - Pelle - Long
But then you're playing a £12m striker out on the wing and then dropping him for JRod (I assume) for a club like Southampton that's a lot of money (obviously not in comparison to their income), although they done it with Osvaldo and dropped Wanyama who they payed £15m for.

You see it as 'exactly what Lucy just said'.

I think it's to give us a different option to Pelle who doesn't have the same kind of mobility. I guess they want squad depth and choice.

Wanyama had injury problems. He'll be a definite starter under Koeman.

          Osvaldo was clinically insane.

    6m/5m will be 4th midfielder

Siggy arguably in the more settled side and better fixtures.

Plus he should have more direct set pieces then Young i'd imagine.

But I see the temptation of Young (and that just sounds wrong reading it back...)

You are a bit optimistic though, seen that already before Moyes came your statistically predictable position was around 7 (yes, SAF's last season you won the title) and it is quite arguable that your squad is weaker, not better than it was last season.

If you think our squad was good for 7th last season going in then I don't know what to say to that. And even now without whatever signings we'll be bringing in I can safely say our squad is stronger than last season. We would've been better off with Pulis last season. I don't understand why people can't see that.

No, listen, what I say is that your shot stats that usually predict position very well were down to 7th best already 2012/2013. There was little difference to 2013/2014. That's what I said.

I'm not saying Moyes wasn't an awful manager who damaged you a lot. I have ever said he was, already before he signed for you. What I am saying is that statistically your title 2013 was a fluke, a big time anomaly, and you are very optimistic if you think you're challenging for the title without some serious new transfers in.

Now that you mention it, it doesn't take a genius (only a non-fan who has some better perspective) to see that your squad has mostly been rather mediocre for years now.

However, aside from the effect of the more able manager that you undeniably have now, there's one thing that speaks loudly in your favour: no European football. Surely your season will be much better than last year, and I would punt that statistically it will look better than the last year with SAF. But will it be good enough to make you title contenders. Without new players, I doubt it.

That's fair. I didn't say we were title contenders just yet, mind. We need another quality CB, a class CM and another quality wide option. But as it stands with a class manager getting the best out of the squad and no Europe I'd hedge my bets for top 4.

Yeah, I think top4 is well possible, and maybe Young and Valencia will turn out to be excellent wingbacks, in which case your squad suddenly looks two players stronger than it was. 😉

Honestly, I think you will still buy a player or two. CB and DM as you said, and probably a RWB too. World class players to those three positions, and suddenly it looks like a title challenging team (particularly without the CL duties).

Valencia is useless sadly. But what LVG has done is quite remarkable. I actually think Young and Fellaini could prove useful players. Between Rafa, Jones and Young we should be fine on the right. It's just CB where we need another player. If we address that and CM I'll be optimistic. If we do that and add a quality wide option, I'll be beside myself.

United supporters need to remember that their team hasn't really been strengthen and that they over archived 2 years ago so if they think they can reclaim past glories with the same team and a new manager then they are living on another planet.

With a couple of very nice mid price options Adebayor , Sterling , Silva and Ramsey . The latter have the potential to do well on any given week but lower points ceiling . Wondering if Rooney , Sturridge , Costa is the way to go

Anyone who says it is like Bale is telling a lie. Bale only got them up to 5th, and was carrying the team, the onus was on the new players to fill the gap. Liverpool were a slip and Palace away from winning the league, and i think that the onus is on Sturridge, Coutinho and Sterling to step up, rather than Markovic or Lambert

Sturridge is an interesting one, great GW1 fixture at home vs a SOU team that will have Yoshida @ CB and no Schneiderlin in front of the back 4. That is captain material.

On the other hand he has two tough away games, although one could argue about how good cities and spurs defenses currently look.

His price point is a sticking issue, Costa and Rooney simply look better value @10.5m currently, which is where I would have thought Sturridge would be priced this year. But he is the 3rd "elite" striker (the other two being namely Rooney & Costa) who is currently fit and his price point is close to fellow injury prone elite players Aguero and RVP. Whilst teams look much better without the 3rd elite striker, I can't help but feel, chances are, at some points i'm going to want one of Sturridge/Aguero/RVP, injury prone as they are. Bumping up a cheap/mid price striker to one of these options will likely take some proper team surgery.

You could argue that upgrading one of Rooney/Costa is an easier route, and it is, but they look kindly enough priced to me this season that i'd be hesitant to drop them unless it really does go pear shaped for one of them.

Those who argue that Pool will be less of an attacking threat, perhaps as a team overall, but Sturridge without Suarez has tended to prosper well enough in the Liverpool team and those providing the ammunition are improving steadily since the January 2013 transfer window. Plus it is an easy enough move to Aguero/RVP when they are fit if Sturridge breaks down.

And if they are all injured at the same time, well that's just a bummer! 😀

Anyone willing to poke a few holes in the above logic?
