Welcome to our annual attempt to pick the best and worst options in the Fantasy Premier League game and assess how the forthcoming Premier League season will shape up.

As usual many of  our last season predictions proved to be terrible.

Among the worst of our predictions was Mark’s assertion that Andreas Weimann would be the best differential and highest scoring budget forward in FPL and Paul’s belief that Roberto Soldado would finish the year as top Premier League goal scorer.

My forecast that Kolo Toure would be the best budget defender and Crystal Palace would be relegated proved equally embarrassing.

Applebonkers was also left with egg on his face by labelling Hull defender Curtis Davies as the worst signing of 2013/14, while Granville’s optimism that Iago Aspas would be the best differential in FPL was another of our top clangers.

There were some predictions we nailed, though. Evs correctly reckoned Southampton would overachieve, while Fulham would falter. Andy and Mark can also feel pleased for themselves for correctly naming Seamus Coleman as the best budget defender in FPL last season.

Hopefully we shall all do better with this series of predictions for the forthcoming Premier League campaign.

I know it is really busy on here, but here is my first ever RMT and would appreciate your thoughts?

I know the defence is weak, (not sure if Baird will play but don’t know a better 4.0 alternative).

    Krul Begovic
    Hutton Baird Jones Taylor Ferdinand
    Ramsey Mata Hazard Sigurdsson Albrighton
    Giroud Diego Costa Rooney

I though this should get me through until after the transfer deadline, which fits nicely with the international break for a two week wildcard if the worst happens and this is a disastrous team selection. On the plus point I will be able to downgrade easily, the only player I will struggle to get easily is Sanchez due to his price without making a few changes.

I think my only concern would be that there are three 'cheap' options in midfield/upfront but then you have squeezed in Sanchez and hazard. Ramsey for Sanchez would free up some cash.

I have been going over this for the last fortnight, Ramseys form has been very difficult to ignore however I am going with Sanchez

      1. Now is the time to take a risk
      2. Easier to downgrade to Ramsey than upgrade to Sanchez, a hatrick v a managerless CPL and everyone will want sanchez and have to tear up your team to do it
      3. Sanchez is a goal assist machine

Interesting that it was pretty unanimous from the scouts that liverpool will struggle this season, or some even them making top 6/7. i think that's a bit overly critical seeing as it is the same side that caused many teams problems with their attacking style of play. Sure, the starting 11 won't be as strong but its still 10 players the same + much better quality defenders, and more depth in attack. Plus the team is a year more experienced together. if Sterling & Coutinho were to progress as rapidly as they did last season and improve on that, they will be right up there.

The reasons you said are exactly why they won't finish as high (unless they sign a top, top, CF in the next few weeks).

There are too many if's in what you are saying, what's more you aren't accounting for the fact that while Sterling and Coutinho may improve, it's unlikely that they will improve much more than players like Hazard, Oscar, Schurrle, Ramsey, Ox and Wilshere that are of a similar age and improving.

Liverpool have lost 1.9 goals per game in 1 player (Suarez) and the only addition they have made that is likely to make a significant impact is Lovren. They they may leak a few less goals this season but that won't make up for 1.9 goals per game. Conversely Arsenal and Chelsea who (finished just behind Liverpool last season) have signed Costa and Sanchez who are definite improvements to their squads, it is this contrast that is why it will be a small miracle if Liverpool finish above either of them.

Lallana, Markovic, and Can are (as you say yourself) depth and are not a significant improvement on Sterling, Coutinho or Henderson. The benefit of the new depth is essentially cancelled out when you consider they have CL to play this season.
