A new beginning. On the eve of a new campaign, two grumpy middle-aged has-beens gather in a studio to recall the summer’s feast of football and look ahead to another Fantasy season, full of hope.

There’s no frills. No live video cast. No special guests. Just Granville and I, stripped back and almost unplugged.

Don’t let that put you off, though. Even with our limited powers we at least attempt to cut through the issues currently rattling around in the minds of Fantasy managers.

We assess the Old Trafford revolution, the world without Suarez and the merits of the three-man strike force. We slice through the current transfer trends and weigh up matters such as the Sigurdsson/Bojan rotation, Fagregas vs Hazard and the Chelsea back four conundrum. We also manage to warm up with a nice little argument about the Alexis Sanchez bandwagon – the traditional pre-season barney.

Be there at the birth via this link, or witness the new dawn via the handy player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'd say it depends whether you own the most expensive player from each position, because if you don't you'll need 2 transfers to get them in (unless you have cash itb).

  6. The case for the defence

    The case for cheap points.

Nearly every RMT shows an abundance of cash spent on the midfield and strikers, with the goal being to be as cheap as you dare in defence.

I find this to be a bad idea for a few reasons.

    1. Look at last year's top scorers on the first page of transfers. 9 defenders, 8 mids, 9 strikers. The defender's points are not that far off those of the strikers, yet look at the prices.

When we have only 100m to spend, isn't it sensible to secure the cheap points? It is not hard to predict which teams/players will finish high up again, so get three or four of them and enjoy the 6-9 pt clean sheets.

Once you have 110m then you can go nuts with the top players.

    2. Transfers are precious. Do you really want to spend the first month sorting out your non-functioning defence? Players dropped, never selected, leaking goals...

Better off using the early transfers to chase the bandwagons and build team value.

    3. The wildcard is to be protected. If your defence is proving to be a problem plus you just have to make changes in the attacking areas (because we know we will have to), then it just leads to the international break WC. Plus no matter how much we hope, you don't make much cash playing the market in those periods.

    4. Remember last year? Do you recall trailing to your mini league casuals for weeks? Because they chose big name defenders and reaped the rewards of the new bonus system. Well it's going to happen again if you persist with your uber rotations. More bonus for wide players we think. So full backs could be as essential as CBs were then.

So I've set my stall out with three big defenders, which hopefully I won't need to change other than for injury or suspension. Sure it means a bit less cash up top, but I have a nice three way mid price rotation in mid/att and personally I feel my team looks just as potent as those galatico teams.

    Cheers.

Your argument fails when you propose big defenders then say wait till you have 110mil for big forwards. It's the forwards whose price goes up quickly.

Ah, great to see you! How's the health if that's not too personal a question? (It clearly is but I'll take a liberty) Seem to remember you suffered a bit last year (to put it mildly)

I agree with some of what you say although it has been proven year after year that the premium defenders really fill their boots after Christmas, early on the cheap options come close to keeping pace. It's really a question of where each incremental £ can be best spent, I've spent a lot of time trying to work this out and never come to a firm conclusion other than there is no 'correct' approach - more than one way to skin a cat and all that.

      Best of luck 🙂

I'm doing ok. Cheated death once. I refuse to go until I win FPL:)

I don't buy the after Xmas arguement. There are a few more clean sheets but the cheap points arguement is still valid.

I'm surprised how few recall the first month last year and are repeating the same mistakes.

The clean sheet point is true and borne out by the stats - I trawled back over a few season's worth of data a year or two back and the trend is definitely there and consistent. There've been other articles by Chris Glover (far better researched) that back this up too. That's not to say that premium defenders don't outperform cheap ones early on, just that the gap is smaller early on.

I've done some work on VORP which I didn't bother trying to publish as I wasn't sure it was that great, funnily enough though RodallegaBombs has done something similar and it's in the Community Articles area - I think you might like it.

Above all else though, people love having the flair attacking players in their teams and no amount of stats will change that 🙂

And if your first statement is true I hope you're not winning FPL for a while yet 😉

I did way too much clean sheet analysis last year. Uber rotating spreadsheets with In Tommy We Trust etc.

It was all a load of bollocks. Clever rotations just dont work out. Too many things happen. Most importantly teams who don't perform and ruin the whole plan.

Same with VORP. Been there but don't really understand what to do with it.

People's desire to have all the best attackers is a weakness. I wonder what Jonty thinks.

I guess people are always going to be skeptical unless you can provide proof of your theory, it's very difficult to override your gut feeling even when provided with persuasive stats, even more so when it's 'just' words. I think proof or not is simple to produce.

Just don't have the time to devote to it, so working from muscle memory of what happened last season.

Once I wildcarded in GW5, and put more money in defence, I started flying up the overall rankings.

Oh I realise that, I was framing the situation rather than suggesting a solution 🙂

It would be interesting to see what the top X teams did early on in previous seasons, no way to find that out now though.

Yes indeed. Even with stats many won't be swayed, which is fine by me.

Looking at the top teams won't necessarily prove anything. They could be top despite rather than top because.

We've been conditioned for so long about spending big up top, that we forget it's Aug & not Jan.

Over reaching at this stage can really throw your season off.

Yes I can't help but feel slightly in denial with my template team. I have Ivan and DDG but the rest are at basement prices. There is plenty of value in the mid priced attacking options and a case can certainly be made for spending more at the back. If you go through with this settup I think you'll have a strong differential team (at least from the regulars on here anyway).

It's not a question of whether defenders score as well as midfielders and strikers, but whether you can predict as easily WHICH defenders are going to score well.

Last season, in the first 10 gameweeks, the four teams with the most clean sheets with Spurs, Southampton, West Ham and Everton. Those teams got 23 between them, whereas Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and City combined only got 13.

In the first 10 gameweeks going forward, the five teams with the most goals were.... City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Utd and Chelsea. They got 100 goals between them, the entire rest of the league only got 128.

Point being, you go for premium strikers and mids over premium defenders because the pricing is more reliable in those positions. At the start of the season at least, it's very difficult to predict which defenders will be scoring at a 5.5+ rate, whereas the big teams dominate the smaller teams in more attacking positions regardless of the time of the season; on average, you get what you pay for. That's why I throw the majority of my money up front.

Yes that sounds right. Spurs & Dawson especially were winding me up last season.

In a similar scenario it's easy for me to jump on these teams as they are cheaper but being second tier teams not dirt cheap.

My team has plenty of players from the teams that are going to score goals, and rotations so the cheaper players get to play at home where they have more chance of scoring.

But to your point, there's no saying which players at the top clubs will do most of the scoring. So your point can easily be turned back on your approach. We've all had the wrong player at the right club before.

      Great post.
The only issue I have is that the high scoring defenders are no more predictable than the mids or forwards. I wildcarded early last year, too, vowing to put more funds in defence. Unfortunately, I picked Evra, Walker and some other under-performer. Later in the season, Koscielny and Azpi were good picks, but that was after xmas. Jumping on expensive defenders because they are expensive is a crapshoot.
Statistically, there is much less price-points correlation among defenders than there are for mids or forwards. There is a rationale, therefore, for investing the funds in attacking players.

      Great post.
Last season i went with Migs-Coleman,Walker,Evra,Mert/Fonte. Whitout Ramsey or Yaya and managed to reach 1xxx in OR(was in top 10k for most of 2013).
Might go for a similar strategy this season, mostly because i'm afraid of having lots of +8m mids with high ownership early in the season when all those knee jerkers are active and have a WC.
What if Fabregas has good start and Hazard blanks, i'll be facing -TV or a transfer i dont want to make and same goes for all the big hitters and they don't have to be necesarly teammates or only mids.

      Very interesting post.

The point I agree with most is about transfers. you're right; the last thing you want to be doing in the first few weeks is changing defenders, when some unexpected talent has started banging in the goals up front. Those are the bandwagons you want to be on.

With that in mind, I think the priority is to pick defenders who are dead certs to play every week. We have all heard this before, but even your fifth choice defender should be expected to play every week, so even though you will rarely/never play them, you also won't have to think about them at transfer moments.

I mean you don't have to pick the so called "heavy hitters" because, as stated above, the teams collecting the team sheets in the early weeks are simply too unpredictable. If you have five defenders who are playing every week, be happy; some of them will get clean sheets.

So far this pre-season, in my many many team re-writes, I have had Chambers, Bartley, Naughton, Kelly and R James, B Davies and Bertrand. I have considered myself a genius but knowing that within a few weeks I'll be moving away from these. So they are all gone.

For reference, my back 5 is currently:
Chester, Janmaat, Van Aanholt, Lovren, Terry.

Unless they get injured, I will be concentrating my early transfers on working the likes of Aguero and Sanchez into my team.

In general I'd agree. I had planned to line up with 2 or 3 big defenders.

The problem is that defences are fickle year to year...with one single exception.
That exception isn't even a team, it's Jose Mourinho!

Man Utd look a decent option, but it's just a guess...made weaker by the injuries to their (presumed) starting back 5.

Everton, Liverpool & Arsenal haven't the best fixtures, and LIV/ARS may well change system to adapt to recent big departures/signings.

Tottenham have a new manager, another lot of guesswork.

Combining all that with the (apparent) value provided by mids this year, and it seems the best course is to go cheaper at the back, wait for the best defences to emerge and get on later.

You are not comparing like for like here:

It is true that over the course of a season, big name defenders provide a higher points return for their price tag than big-name attackers. But you cannot make any conclusions whatsoever as to the effectiveness or otherwise of cheap defensive rotation based on this.

If you choose three 6 million + defenders, you will most likely make use of them week-in, week-out, or at least very regularly, so it is certainly relevant to look at their points totals come the end of the season. However, a manager using a rotation system is not looking at points totals. That manager will be looking at the points per game scored in each game that the rotating defenders are on the pitch only.

What is really required is a points per game analysis of rotated defenders for the games that they are selected. This can be compared with the points per game total of the big-priced defenders for the far more regular games where they are selected.

Your second and third points implicitly assume that your first point is correct, and your fourth point cherry picks an example that supports your argument, rather than looking at trends across seasons.

Finally, you completely discount an analysis of the points difference between expensive attackers and your system of mid-priced rotated attackers. It could be the case that mid-price attackers, when rotated right, can give you a bigger return than big-priced superstars, but you consider this principle not to be applicable to defenders.

      not bad at all!

you could shave off 1M by doing Caulker->Ferdinand/Dunne/Simpson and Davies->Chester and if you can find another 0.5 somewhere else you could upgrade your El Ahmadi to Siggy for example

    Evening lads.

Really thinking of having a cheap punt on A Young now valencia and shaw are injured. Dôyou guys think it is worth it? I quite like mutch, ledley and bolasie at 5.5 but young can be explosive given fixtures and pre season form. What do you prefer?

    1/ Ramsey+Ericksen+Young
    Or
    2/ Mata+Ericksen+Mutch/Ledley (already 3 manU players)
    Or
    3/ Mata+Ramsey+isgrove/albrighton
