Liverpool have completed their fourth signing of the summer with the £20m capture of Stewart Downing from Aston Villa on a long-term deal. Having had a £15m bid for the winger knocked back last week, Kenny Dalglish wasted little time in returning with an improved offer and with Villa giving the club permission to speak to the player on Thursday, the deal reached a speedy conclusion, following weeks of media speculation.

Downing joins Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Alexander Doni in arriving at the club this last few weeks and continues the major rebuilding process undertaken since Dalglish replaced Roy Hodgson back in January. Liverpool’s Director of Football, Damien Comolli, shared his thoughts on the transfer:

“We needed that pace and wide player that can bring us something extra, which we did not have in the squad. He has the right mentality, the right attitude and was absolutely committed to coming to us, so we are delighted.

He is a big, big signing for us. When we have Andy up front, he can put those balls in, but also he’s got more than that. We look thoroughly into data and statistics before signing players and we really think we are bringing a big, big asset into our team.”

Downing also spoke to the club’s official website upon completion of the transfer:

“It’s a great feeling and I’m very happy to be here. With the tradition, the manager and the players they have here, there was a big temptation to come here and once I knew of their interest, there was only one place I wanted to go.

‘It will be a great feeling to run out at Anfield. When I wanted to come to Liverpool, it was the first thing I thought of – playing at Anfield in front of those great fans. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Statistics

A graduate of Middlesboro’s Academy, Downing debuted for his hometown club back in April 2002, though a failure to establish himself in the first-team meant he played just six games in his first two seasons. Loaned out to Sunderland in 2003-04, he made 7 appearances and scored 3 goals before injuries at the Riverside saw him recalled.

Resultantly given a run of games to nail down a starting place, Downing grabbed his opportunity and became a regular starter for Boro, staying with the club until the end of a doomed 2008/09 season that saw them relegated to the Championship. In total, he played 171 league matches for Middlesboro, scoring 17 goals and making 17 assists.

Snapped up by Martin O’Neill for Aston Villa in the summer of 2009, Downing, upon recovering from a broken foot, proved to be a key player for the Midlands outfit. Over the past two campaigns the winger has played 63 league games, scoring 9 and assisting 9 goals, with last season’s returns of 7 goals and 3 assists indicative of his growing influence on the side. He’s also played 22 times for England, picking up 3 assists.

The Prospects

The addition merely adds to the currently congested midfield but, as the weeks progress, departures are likely to start filtering out of Anfield and a clearer picture will emerge of Dalglish’s intentions.

Joe Cole and Milan Jovanovic seem certain to leave and with Raul Meireles and Maxi Rodriguez both linked with moves away from Liverpool, Downing’s prospects as a first-team option perhaps look greater than both fellow new-boys Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson, with less competition for a left wing role than in the centre and wide right.

Another factor here is that Downing’s arrival brings yet another set-piece taker to Liverpool; Henderson was number one for Sunderland corners, Adam took, well, everything for Blackpool and Downing shared corner kicks with Ashley Young. Downing took 93 corners last season but, with Steven Gerrard also added to the mix, he’s likely to lose that part of his game.

Downing’s crossing will bring a crucial extra element to Liverpool’s play, however, which may help the club bring the best out in Andy Carroll. Last season, Downing made 51 successful crosses, third best in the league behind Leighton Baines and Nani. With just 15, Raul Meireles was best Liverpool midfielder, a clear indication of the side’s inefficiency from the flanks.

This lack of quality aerial supply meant Carroll’s effectiveness in the air suffered; he won 62% of aerial duels at Newcastle but just 46% at Liverpool. For as much as Downing’s delivery has been talked about as the key to Carroll’s effectiveness, in terms of Fantasy perspective, Carroll may prove the answer to unlocking Downing’s potential; Downing made a total of 243 crosses last season and picked up just 3 assists- Carroll’s ability to turn those crosses into goals could considerably boost Downing’s assists and propel him into our Fantasy thinking as Dalglish looks for a top-four finish this time round.

The knock-on effect at Villa Park brings Marc Albrighton further into the picture, with the youngster currently Villa‘s only first-team right winger. New boss Alex McLeish must move to strengthen his options on both flanks, though, and has been strongly linked with Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia. The Frenchman is likely to play on the left, though Gabby Agbonlahor’s adaptability may influence Big Eck’s thinking here. Set-pieces are also up for grabs, with the club now bereft of their two main takers from last season and N’Zogbia would be nailed-on favourite if he makes the move to the Midlands.

McLeish is notoriously defensive-minded and much will depend on his favoured formation. Last season he fielded a 4-4-2 on twenty occasions but Birmingham’s other eighteen games saw them play with just one forward up top. Five in the midfield could even bring forgotten man Stephen Ireland into the equation, with the player positive of his chances of becoming a key member of the Villa side under the new regime.

Downing was essential for Liverpool to buy to provide vital crosses for both Suarez and especially Carroll. Liverpool currently look set for a top 4 place for sure and don't be surprised under King Kenny that they end up challenging for the title. The strength in depth from midfielders that can play more up forward or in different positions are very impressive. They just need an excellent left back the all teams will start to fear Liverpool again.

Why say things like that, stuff like that that gets us Liverpool fans a bad name in terms of being deluded with expectations, if we finish top 4 that would be excellent, realistically we ain't gonna win the title!

I'm not a Liverpool fan (or a fan of any particular team for that matter - just a fan of football), but I think they're in the mix this year. They're making some good moves and started to show fresh promise in the second half of last season.

Chelsea's main stars are getting old, the new guys don't seem to be quite there yet. The new boss may work wonders though - at this level I think the quality of player is enough not to need serious tactical management but people-management is far more important and he should be able to re-ignite that Mourhino passion.

Man U had a lucky season really considering the team they had - though they're now getting better players in too. They always have the ref onside of course - Vidic should have been sent off about 5 times last season, as well as the Rooney forearm smash that wasn't punished. (people will say all teams have some luck but Man U definitely get more than their share).

Man City the jury is still out on, team not fully gelled, manager a little Italian in style for my liking, works to a point but I don't think it's the best recipe for the Premier League.

Arsenal - who knows! They seem to be in a bit of a mess at the moment and Arsene still seems to value youth over experience, his last great team had a good balance but this current squad is fragile and fragmented - aside from Cesc who are the real leaders if he goes? The Viera in midfield, the Henry up front, Keown in defence, Seaman in goal etc...

What about an excellent centre back to replace the ageing and snail-slow Carra? I mean, if Agger gets injured (again) then Carra and Skirts/Kiri is a massively weak pairing at a very important position, especially against the top teams. Look what happened to Arsenal last season: great midfield - couldn't defend, missed Vermalean too much. United, Chelsea, City all very solid at centre back and guess who finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the PL? Even Fulham, who scored very few goals last season finished a respectable 8th because of a great defence which revolves around Hangeland. If Liverpool don't sort this out then all the teams will highlight Carra as a weak point and attempt to expose it. Players like Torres, Hernandez, Rooney Tevez will all fancy a foot race with Carra, and I think we all know who'll win. He's a conceded penalty waliking, and even though he's been amazing for the club, it's time sentimentality was put to one side and Carra is dropped to the bench. Otherwise Liverpool will not be challenging for top 3, which I also believe, Fran, they are nearly capable of doing.

Good read that. I'd suggest that in fantasy terms the two biggest prospects as a result of this move will be Andy Carroll and Charlie N'Zogbia should he move to Villa.

Can't see myself investing in Downing just yet, because it's unclear how much playing time he will get. That said, he should be miles ahead of Joe Cole and Maxi - even if Maxi did have a good run last season - so if he can establish himself he could provide a great option.

Shame fpl didn't restart before the move, though, as it has probably added another £1mil to his value 🙁

    henderson gerrard adam downing

will kuyt stay to warm thew bench?

will that midfield prove too adventurous?
will their poor defence undermine all the money spent on the front 6?

Lucas will probably play to give balance to the midfield, but I think the watchword will be rotation.

Kenny has a very versatile midfield now, but as your formation points out, it will be difficult not to go with Carroll and Suarez. Going to be very tricky to get the right player.

I can't get my head around this - Kuyt and Meireles and Lucas are all twice the player Henderson, Adam and Downing are.

Henderson should definitely be stuck on the bench for a couple of years, and Gerrard's place should be up for grabs as soon as he injures himself again.

So £30mil worth of signings on the bench then?

Just playing devil's advocate, but I think it's highly unlikely we'll see a settled starting eleven.

Most likely to be nailed on are (injury notwithstanding) Reina, Carra, Gerrard and then maybe Suarez and maybe Carroll.

But the little ginger fella won more 'duels' than any other midfielder bar Lucas last season. Pretty decent duo to have.

Underrate Lucas at your peril by the way. No midfielder in a major European league won more tackles than the derided Brazilian last season.

I agree that Lucas doesn't excel in the simple passing game in the way Makelele or Busquets did/does but he's a great ball winner who can help keep the game ticking.

I just don't think any side can fit Adam AND Gerrard in without a holding player. Xabi Alonso was so much more intelligent and composed. His long passes also actually reached their target quite often, quite the opposite of Gerrard and to some extent Adam in other words.

Good point actually. Xabi Alonso's biggest advantage in the deeper role was that he could get the ball forward and into Gerrard's feet, where he could be especially dangerous.

They've really missed that recently, but Adam could be a worthy successor.

Don't see how they can go with the double pivot of Adam and Lucas without going one up front though. That gives the option of Carroll up top and then two of Kuyt, Suarez and Dwoning on the wings with Gerrard an advanced midfielder. But as I say, they'll probably mix and match throughout the season.

Because Lucas is a better player.

But you have been told by all media outlets that Adam is to generate hyperbole interest and money.

Its more profitable to talk up a set piece taker than a ball winner. Both are good

Lucas is better overall and more important to the team.

i dnt think any team would pay this sum to put him on the bench, i say he will play as a defensive mid, and occasionally as a winger when faced against the likes of baines or cole.

          Henderson isn't a defensive mid.
Why not just let Liverpool's player of the year, and 1st choice DM for the Brazil national team play there.

He's young enough to handle a spell on the bench. I think Liverpool will need to show quick results after that incredible investment and I don't think Henderson has the quality to break into that midfield at this point.

i see henderson playing deep, with kuyt on the wing.
adam is unlikely to feature with gerrard, cnt see two playmakers in midfield.
the question is, whats more important: adam for 12 mil for midfield cover or jose enrique for 12mil at LB?

i understand investing in the squad but paying £20m for henderson and £12 for adam seems more than that

perhaps their are doubts about gerrard's fitness from now on?

Just to be clear, Henderson was about £16m and Adam £7m according to the quality papers. Liverpool have overpaid this seaon, no doubt, but no need to exaggerate the point.

Moving to Liverpool will probably boost his price, so I'd expect he'll be more than 7.5.

There's always value to be found, though, it might just mean looking at different players to the ones that were steals last year.

              Ssssh! I don't think anyone's noticed!

Arteta will need to keep hold of penalties and the majority of set piece duties, and ideally take up a more advanced role. It's certainly a possibility if Rodwell forces himself into the side more consistently.

                Yeah kind of agree there.

Can't help feeling that Baines is the man to have though, what with all of his set piece skill, assists and the potential for clean sheets.

Obviously a very expensive option, but you'd probably take a midfielder who was 7.5 and offered his attacking returns.

Set pieces will be key though. Hopefully Everton can buck their trend for slow starts and make some headway against tot QPR bla AVL WIG in their first five before fixtures take a nose dive.

          Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
          As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
          Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
          Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
          Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
          That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking of going for a dirt cheap midfield full of potential bargains and loading up on expensive defenders and strikers. Just can't see which big price midfielders are likely to be worth it this year.

All depends on prices of course, 5-2-3 could be the new 3-4-3.

I'm just hoping the majority of new stuff pertains to the interface and functionality of the site rather than changes to the game and it's rules.

      1. One choice per GW for a captain and vice-captain.
      2. No bonus or have a MOTM award per game and +2 points.
      3. A clarified assists rule.
      4. change points for goals or assists- how can a striker only get 1 point less for an assist than a goal?
      5. Something to compensate for cancelled games due to weather...not sure how though.
      6. 2 WCs per season - 1 used in each half.

        1. Agreed.
        2. Disagree - they're completely infuriating at times, but like them or loathe them, the bonus points are one of the key differences between FPL and it's rivals. Besides, Mark has said that the awarding of BPs will be more transparent this season, thanks to the link up between FFS and FPL.
        3. More consistency would be helpful.
        4. Don't mind that myself.
        5. Again, I don't mind this element (no pun intended) of luck. Win some, lose some.
        6. Like it!

i wouldnt go for any of malouda or vdv as vdv will be expensive and without real value if they get a good striker, malouda i think will start sharing time with sturridge on the wing.

bent will be a nailed starter due to lack of ortions in villa, and he's proven his ability to be consistent regardless of team form.
hernandez will be subject to rotation now that welbek is back and even berba.
kompany will be the bst defender to invest in if city maintain a strong defence under mancini. he wnt be too expensive as he dsnt have the ability to score.

    Not sure about liverpool

Maxi was just starting to find his feet in the english game , same with mareles . Now they all going to be uncertain of their places yet again.
All very well buying all these new players , however i felt what liverpool needed more than anyhing was some stability .

What will happen with kuyt for example ? unlikely to play upfront now and midfield saturated.

What liverpool needed was very solid defenders , not midfielders

      ——-Lucas, Adam/ Henderson—–
      Kuyt, Gerrard/ Meriless, Downing/ Maxi,
      —Suarez/ Kuyt——————-
      ——–Carrol/ Suarez———–

I think they r up for the title. What are the odds for them to be champions can anybody post them?

Daniel, you've put 6 in mid, 1 up top... or 5 in mid and 2 up top, depending on how you look at it.

Unless you think Kenny is playing 3 at the back, then the selection situation is worse than that - Suarez / Kuyt / Carroll are vying for one spot.

Kuyt could play upfront or in mid. I think that Carrol won't be played always. THey were more effective without him in the end of the season.

i dunno. with a stat like sir p came up with above ('pool's leading assist provider had 15 all season), it's hard for me to accept a statement that they didn't *need* midfielders.

defenders for sure, but when you buy carroll, you need to buy assists, too. it's like buying a kiddie pool for the kids but no air pump.

you can do it that way, but it'll be a pain in the a**

I think that they r having major major technical problems, that is why they are so late. Mark said not today 5 days ago. If it is not today it is tomorrow or day after tomorrow, but if there a lot of bugs and any kid in the garage can brake it....???? Then what?

I agree with King Cabbage. FPL know that around 2.5m people are waiting for the site to start & all the other fantasy football games have started.

How difficult can it be to put a simple statement, giving an earliest possible lauch date? That way people wont be checking it everyday in vain & growing increasingly frustrated.

They risk losing people due to the poor communication skills. Out of sheer boredom, I joined The Sun dream team, other people will just join another dream team & forget about this one.

It makes absolutely no sense to not communicate with the people.

+10000000 the communication is lacking. Next the trust is lost and without trust nothing is gonna be the same. Simple statement with round date, not specific would be great. I think they don't know the simple rules of marketing nowadays, and without marketing they are realy doomed.
