Our final look at the opening Gameweek of the season casts an eye over Chelsea’s attacking impetus after last night’s demolition of Burnley. Swansea’s in-form playmaker is much in-demand as the fixtures turn kind whilst United’s dismal opening day defeat has already sparked an exodus as Fantasy managers take stock.

The Player

Gylfi Sigurdsson spoiled the opening day party at Old Trafford to spark the first major bandwagon of the 2014/15 campaign. Prior to the United clash, we were concerned over a move to the right flank in Swansea’s final friendly, whilst the form of Bojan Krkic had many eyeing up a home/away rotation pairing to avoid the so-called tougher fixtures.

Sigurdsson’s goal and assist, allied with maximum bonus, underlines just how deadly he can be when fielded in his preferred position. Having struggled to find his form at Spurs, a return to the Liberty – where he averaged 5.7 points per game for the Swans in 2011/12 – has immediately reinvigorated his Fantasy prospects.

Moving up to 6.1 in price in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Sigurdsson is poised to rise again before the weekend deadline arrives, but even then, that cost looks a bargain when you analyse his fixtures. Buoyed by their 2-1 triumph against United, Garry Monk’s side now face four home showdowns in the next six Gameweeks, as Burnley, West Brom, Southampton and Newcastle all roll up to the Liberty, and with a trip to Sunderland also included in that run, it’ll take nerves of steel to turn our backs on the playmaker right now.

The Team

Last season, Chelsea’s problems in the final third cost them dearly. Jose Mourinho’s side finished just four points behind champions City despite scoring over 30 goals fewer than their title rivals but last night’s display at Burnley suggests the Blues’ summer signings could be the final pieces of the jigsaw.

With Cesc Fabregas dictating play in the centre of the park and Diego Costa’s predatory instincts already in evidence, Chelsea were in cruise control despite an ineffectual display from Eden Hazard. Mourinho’s decision to hand Andre Schurrle the right-wing berth also paid off as the German slotted home an outstanding team goal – as we mentioned in this morning’s Scout Notes, Schurrle, at 7.5, had a better minutes-per-goal record than any team-mate last term, and if he can steer clear of his manager’s rotation, seems an enticing midfield prospect.

The form of their attackers is likely to keep the spotlight away from Mourinho’s backline right now. A defence that delivered 18 shut-outs in the season gone by looks primed for investment, but the arrival of Filipe Luis places question marks over the likelihood of rotation at the back. For now, home clashes with Leicester, Swansea and Villa in the next five Gameweeks should keep the focus on Fabregas and co further up the field whilst we look for signs of consistency of selection amongst Mourinho’s illustrious backline.

The Talking Point

You can’t say he didn’t warn us. Swansea’s win over United may have caused shock waves around the Premier League but it was perhaps no real surprise to Louis van Gaal – only last month the Dutchman admitted that “every club where I have been, I’ve struggled for the first three months”.

United were heavily backed across the Fantasy games heading into the opener with the Swans after a 100% record over the summer, including a 3-1 win over Liverpool. With injuries hitting hard, though, Van Gaal’s patched-up first-team look far from the finished product and Fantasy managers are already having second thoughts. Juan Mata is second only to the injured Ross Barkley for transfers out this week, with many trading out the Spaniard after a number of similarly priced alternatives such as the afore-mentioned Fabregas, Aaron Ramsey, Raheem Sterling and David Silva all delivered.

With Wayne Rooney residing in almost 50% of teams, it’s perhaps understandable that a double-up doesn’t appeal to many, though the fixtures are still very much in United’s favour. Van Gaal’s team face just one of last term’s top eight in the next seven matches but, as Saturday’s stumble suggests, they are struggling for the form to take advantage of such a run.

A change of formation during the Swansea defeat also indicates Van Gaal is still far from certain over his options at the moment, and with less than two weeks until the transfer deadline, the Red Devils boss is apparently set to invest heavily in alternatives to his current crop. Another couple of performances like last weekend’s and the same could easily be said for Fantasy managers.

I've always played it the first few weeks as I usually get off to a terrible start. Not too bad this season but I've definitely got my eye on a few players I want in my team. Just deciding whether I should bring them in for a hit, use my WC or bring them in slowly over the next few weeks although price rises is making the last option look impossible.

I think it all depends on who you're bringing in. If they are proven PL players who you left out for whatever reason then I don't see the issue in bringing them in?

    so my midfield is currently
    Mata - Siggy - Fab - Sterling - Ramsey
Mata is so gonna price drop which is effectively a £0.5m drop in terms of what you can replace him with but I don't have the easy/obv change available because of the other players I already have. so should I follow the crowd and get him out now at £9m - maybe for Silva even though I don't like his fixtures - or hold?

Completely crazy. Ramsey was the best player in the league last season before he got injured. Fixtures were and still are irrelevant. He had a poor game and still scored the winner. You cannot discount being in the right place at the right time - that alone is an art.

United looked a lot poorer than everyone was expecting. They just lost to Swansea at home, what makes people think that away to Sunderland will be any better? How many easy matches did they lose last season? Even if they win, do they have the potential to thrash teams?

If you sell Ramsey and he scores vs Everton, his price will rocket. If Mata scores vs Sunderland, the selling might stop, but he won't shoot up in price. That makes selling Ramsey dangerous.

Originally intended to save my transfer this week but now thinking Ramsey to Fab.

    Hazard, Ramsey, Mata, Hendo, Siggy
    Costa, Rooney, Austin

then bring in Sterling (gw 4) and Aguero (for Costa) after gm5, losing Hendo at some stage to help fund.

    any views?

    Mata > Fab done...

Doesnt feel great with Mata's upcoming fixtures but at this time in the season you have to jump on the bandwagons early.

These 2 players can drift apart in price very quickly and before you know it by GW3 mata is 8.5 and Fab is 9.5

If you think Mata will do well keep him as his value will certainly rise.

There are a lot of top players I respect, ENR for example, backing the Mata->Fab wagon. It's making me think it would be wise to do the same.

But then I remember the quality of Mata, look at his stunning points history, and then remember how meticulous LvG's training methods are. LvG analyses every detail from video footage, making sure previous mistakes are not repeated.

United are lacking at the back, but at the front they are the same team that won the league, with a couple of additions. There is potential to be tapped there, and you'd think LvG is capable of doing that. This is a man that beat Roma, Inter, Real Madrid, Liverpool in pre-season (half-friendlies)

Maybe I'm just writing this to justify saving a transfer, but I'm going to stick to my own methods this season, as always. There is a reason we all considered Mata to be essential a couple of days ago.

I think we were all hoping he was essential, the lack of signings and just reading the Man Utd starting Xl on saturday is a real black mark against his name.

The fixtures are great and there is no doubting the man is class, its the other 8 (rooney aside) outfield players that do nothing to support him.

They aren't the same team that won the league. When they won the league RVP was in electric form on the back of his incredible season at Arsenal, now he's getting on a bit, as is Rooney. Both players are worse than 2 seasons ago in my opinion, and they're United's best players. The rest of the team is so awful that until they spend big money buying proper CBs and CMs, I'm going nowhere near them. Backing United to turn it around so soon was a mistake. Pre-season friendlies mean nothing.

HAZARD and FABREGAS a viable option?

Ok, so we spend the whole morning arguing about knee jerking and how getting Cesc was chasing points and how Hazard will outscore him over a season.

Think about it. Both of them have scored 190-200pts on more than one occasion in the past. They are tried and tested in FPL. Im seriously considering bringing Cesc to sit pretty next to Hazard in my midfield.

With LEIC/SWANS/VILLA coming up in the next 5 I can see serious points and price increases.

What could be better than having 380-400 pts guaranteed at this stage of the season. If the FPL landscape change then it's easy to swap them out.

    Maybe that's just me.

I'm about to do the same. 2x reasons,

      1: more points, obviously
2: if I don't do, it, Mata falls to 8.9 and Cesc is 9.2 or 9.3 by the weekend, means I can't do the transfer.

Leaves me with Costa as well, but downgrading 1 of them is easier if I need to.

True. But I didn't like what I saw in the united game. In any case it's easy to get Mata back in at 8.8m.

Silva(151) and Yaya(241) last season came close...if Silva wasn't injured who knows.

My only concern with that, especially since you have Costa as well, is that Chelsea didn't go for the jugular yesterday. They eased off 2nd half when they could've gone looking for 5 or 6.
If Mourinho has got them happy to win by a 2 goal cushion then there's no way all 3 will reach the heights you expect.
They'll still all do pretty well though.

yoshida looked awful plus they already bought Gardos whom I know very well and he is as good as Chiriches when he used to play regularly. He would make a perfect pair with Fonte when he gets fit. So bye bye Yoshida then

I didn't know that. Thanks a lot. Then if I pay 5.0 then Clyne is a better option then Gardos.

Save. Weakest opposition in the league, Burnley. Fabregas may not be so advanced in future, and clean sheets are more important to Mourinho at home.
