Our final look at the opening Gameweek of the season casts an eye over Chelseaโ€™s attacking impetus after last nightโ€™s demolition of Burnley. Swanseaโ€™s in-form playmaker is much in-demand as the fixtures turn kind whilst Unitedโ€™s dismal opening day defeat has already sparked an exodus as Fantasy managers take stock.

The Player

Gylfi Sigurdsson spoiled the opening day party at Old Trafford to spark the first major bandwagon of the 2014/15 campaign. Prior to the United clash, we were concerned over a move to the right flank in Swanseaโ€™s final friendly, whilst the form of Bojan Krkic had many eyeing up a home/away rotation pairing to avoid the so-called tougher fixtures.

Sigurdssonโ€™s goal and assist, allied with maximum bonus, underlines just how deadly he can be when fielded in his preferred position. Having struggled to find his form at Spurs, a return to the Liberty โ€“ where he averaged 5.7 points per game for the Swans in 2011/12 โ€“ has immediately reinvigorated his Fantasy prospects.

Moving up to 6.1 in price in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Sigurdsson is poised to rise again before the weekend deadline arrives, but even then, that cost looks a bargain when you analyse his fixtures. Buoyed by their 2-1 triumph against United, Garry Monkโ€™s side now face four home showdowns in the next six Gameweeks, as Burnley, West Brom, Southampton and Newcastle all roll up to the Liberty, and with a trip to Sunderland also included in that run, itโ€™ll take nerves of steel to turn our backs on the playmaker right now.

The Team

Last season, Chelseaโ€™s problems in the final third cost them dearly. Jose Mourinhoโ€™s side finished just four points behind champions City despite scoring over 30 goals fewer than their title rivals but last nightโ€™s display at Burnley suggests the Bluesโ€™ summer signings could be the final pieces of the jigsaw.

With Cesc Fabregas dictating play in the centre of the park and Diego Costaโ€™s predatory instincts already in evidence, Chelsea were in cruise control despite an ineffectual display from Eden Hazard. Mourinhoโ€™s decision to hand Andre Schurrle the right-wing berth also paid off as the German slotted home an outstanding team goal โ€“ as we mentioned in this morningโ€™s Scout Notes, Schurrle, at 7.5, had a better minutes-per-goal record than any team-mate last term, and if he can steer clear of his managerโ€™s rotation, seems an enticing midfield prospect.

The form of their attackers is likely to keep the spotlight away from Mourinhoโ€™s backline right now. A defence that delivered 18 shut-outs in the season gone by looks primed for investment, but the arrival of Filipe Luis places question marks over the likelihood of rotation at the back. For now, home clashes with Leicester, Swansea and Villa in the next five Gameweeks should keep the focus on Fabregas and co further up the field whilst we look for signs of consistency of selection amongst Mourinhoโ€™s illustrious backline.

The Talking Point

You canโ€™t say he didnโ€™t warn us. Swanseaโ€™s win over United may have caused shock waves around the Premier League but it was perhaps no real surprise to Louis van Gaal โ€“ only last month the Dutchman admitted that โ€œevery club where I have been, Iโ€™ve struggled for the first three monthsโ€.

United were heavily backed across the Fantasy games heading into the opener with the Swans after a 100% record over the summer, including a 3-1 win over Liverpool. With injuries hitting hard, though, Van Gaalโ€™s patched-up first-team look far from the finished product and Fantasy managers are already having second thoughts. Juan Mata is second only to the injured Ross Barkley for transfers out this week, with many trading out the Spaniard after a number of similarly priced alternatives such as the afore-mentioned Fabregas, Aaron Ramsey, Raheem Sterling and David Silva all delivered.

With Wayne Rooney residing in almost 50% of teams, itโ€™s perhaps understandable that a double-up doesnโ€™t appeal to many, though the fixtures are still very much in Unitedโ€™s favour. Van Gaalโ€™s team face just one of last termโ€™s top eight in the next seven matches but, as Saturdayโ€™s stumble suggests, they are struggling for the form to take advantage of such a run.

A change of formation during the Swansea defeat also indicates Van Gaal is still far from certain over his options at the moment, and with less than two weeks until the transfer deadline, the Red Devils boss is apparently set to invest heavily inย alternatives to his current crop. Another couple of performances like last weekendโ€™s and the same could easily be said for Fantasy managers.

nothing wrong with it. Every year FFS is filled with rage at people jumping one early bandwagons. But there's a difference between Eric Dier and Siggy or Fab. Nobody is offing Mata because they don't think he'll do well long term, but letting him find form first and jumping on the player who has hit the ground running is just common sense.

        Mata 3 key passes & 1 shot
        Fabregas 3 key passes & 0 shots

There's zero difference in their *form*.
One happened to have their chances converted, the other didn't.

            You are wholly incorrect.

A players underlying statics such as chance created or shots on target are directly correlated to their potential to garner fantasy points for assists & goals.

Using your logic that: "underlying stats and form in points converted are completely different things" would mean Fabregas could have scored a goal yesterday despite not registering a shot...

A player needs a chance created to register an assist.
A player needs a shot to register a goal.
It stands to reason then, that the more of these a player produces the more likely he'll score fantasy points.

Threre is no debate, discussion or argument here...

Hey, I see that you're an accomplished FPL player & further, I don't have anything against Fabregas here.

Also, just to be clear I'd like you to know that I'd take a similar position had the weekend gone another way.

For example, let's say that Mata got a couple of assists & Fabregas blanked...

I'd still take the position that you shouldn't bring in Mata just because he *scored* & Fabrgeas didn't.

They're both quality players, who are proven fantasy assests, that managed to produce 3 scoring chances for their team mates & in the end, that's all that really matters over the long run.

                Stop with the semantics.

There's no "quality chances created" it's simply "chances created"...

You cannot use your subjective measure of a player's performance to trump OPTA's proven statistical approach.

There is a direct correlation between chances created & goals scored.

                That's it, that's all.

This comment shows you lack a fundamental understanding of OPTA's *Chance Created* statistic.

Here's a quote from an article to help you out...

"To make it a little easier, I looked at the relationship between goals scored and chances created for EPL teams.
In other words, do teams that have more chances created score more? Do teams with less chances created score less? The answer, in short, is yes, they are correlated."

not hugely. i have finished top 10k last 2 seasons and never chased value, but i really believe in form over fixtures, therefore if someone is doing well get them in, which inevitably goes with price rises.

In my cash leagues loads of people had higher team values but i had the points, dont obsess about it but try and grab the form players

personally i think its a waste. if you concentrate on points team value roles in, i dont think you'd need to obsess over it. we are just starting the season. the fact you have 80 points surely means a few of your players will rise anyway?

That's true but should I get an overload of team value by bringing in Fab for Mata.

Team value with no transfers would be 100.7

But bringing in Fab would probably be 101.1

Anyone else think that Hazard is somewhat like a midfield version of Baines in fantasy terms? Premium price, great player, but explosive rather than consistent - he's not an amazing captaincy option as his attacking returns are quite hard to predict. You know that both will be one of the highest scoring players in their respective positions by the end of the season, if not the highest, but you have to keep them long term to be assured of catching their points.

Caulker for me. United were much better away last year, have a good record at Sunderland and Caulker looked a real threat against Hull. Spurs also missing some first choice defenders.

i currently have ramsey sterling cesc siggy, tadic and eriksen (hoping to switch to silva after city schedule gets easier and eriksen brings some nice point from his next 4 accessible games). rooney sturridge and pelle as strikers. Don't think it's possible to have three world class strikers unless you compromise heavily in the midfield.

Anyone else think that Ramsey>Fabregas is less mental than Mata>Fabregas?

Arsenal play away at Turkey tonight and have Everton away at the weekend and Mata has a sweet run of fixtures with no Europe.

If I wanted Fab that bad I would probably do Ramsey>Fab.

same. ive gone for sturridge, costa and rooney up top so i have 3 obvious captain choices. but now sterling, ramsey and fabregas are creeping into that terriority. Hazard, like Lampard, Ronaldo and Gerrard used to be, is a midfield captain choice.

All this pro knee jerk arguments makes me consider Mata to Sterling. Sterling could be a season keeper and I don't own Liv player for now. I own Rooney obviously. I know the fixtures are bad but I see goals in the City vs Liv game, maybe not so much in the Spurs Liv but I think atm Liv is of better quality then the Spurs...

As an owner, I am absolutely ecstatic that so many people are selling Mata.

The game's about points, not £££ (and after he gets a couple of hauls his price will skyrocket anyway).

Guy's world class, playing at #10, with the best run of fixtures that any team will have in the PL this season. And now, on top of that, he's a differential too 8-).

Keep selling people, keep selling 8-).
