Technical Area

Chelseaโ€™s Monday night meeting with Burnley saw a trio of players handed their league debuts for the Blues, with Thibaut Courtois, Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa afforded their first starts for the club. After racking up an impressive 3-1 win over the promoted side, the London club are already picking up plenty of new investors ahead of three very favourable home matches in the next five, with Leicester, Swansea and Villa all poised to make their way to Stamford Bridge.

In our second Technical Area piece of the 2014/15 season, we take a look at just how Costa and Fabregas fared as Jose Mourinhoโ€™s title favourites got their season up and running.

โ€œchelseaโ€

As the average position map from Chelseaโ€™s win at Burnley shows, Costa (number 19) was less advanced when in possession than either of the widemen, Andre Schurrle (number 14) and Eden Hazard (number 10). The summer signingโ€™s hard work up top meant both Hazard and Schurrle managed more touches in the final third (45 and 34 respectively), while Costaโ€™s 32 was just six more than Fabregasโ€™ (number 4) tally of 26 โ€“ highlighting how advanced the Spaniard found himself on the ball, in spite of a starting berth in the double-pivot. Indeed, his central midfield partner Nemanja Matic registered just six by comparison.

The conductor in the centre of the park, Fabregas was ever available to his team-mates โ€“ he registered 111 touches and received a pass every 1.2 minutes, quicker than any other Blues player. Impressively, Fabregas and Costa were first and second respectively for passes received in the opposition half (44 and 40); an indication of just how crucial they will both be to Mourinhoโ€™s gameplan.

Unsurprisingly, Fabregas created more goal-scoring opportunities than any Chelsea team-mate โ€“ three key passes and a couple of through balls helped him serve up a pair of debut assists. Like Hazard, he failed to register a single attempt at Turf Moor, though did manage four touches inside the box (only one fewerย than Hazard and Costa) and still endeavoured to serve up an 11-point return for his Fantasy Premier League owners, with his creativity looking difficult to ignore.

When compared to other forwards, Costaโ€™s stats indicate he is exactly the type of industrious character required to lead the line for Mourinho. A total of 72 touches was second amongst strikers for the Gameweek behind Marouane Chamakhโ€™s 73 for Palace โ€“ to put that into perspective, he averaged 1.3 minutes per touch, compared to Fernando Torres (1.8), Demba Ba (2.2) and Samuel Etoโ€™o (2.4) from the previous season.

Amongst forwards, Costaโ€™s 24 passes received in the final third was equalled by Saido Berahino and bettered only by Steven Naismithโ€™s 25 โ€“ two players who were fielded in โ€œthe holeโ€ behind a lone forward for their respective clubs at the weekend. This is a by-product of his tendency to drop into the deeper positions and led to him making just five touches inside the box, though thereโ€™s an argument that, after going 3-1 ahead, the Blues went into cruise control and simply contained their opponents for the rest of the match.

Whilst Andre Schurrle managed five attempts over the 90 minutes thanks to some speculative long range efforts, Costa kept his efforts constrained to inside the area โ€“ the Spain international fired two shots against The Clarets and sparked Chelseaโ€™s comeback by bagging the equalizer after Scott Arfield had fired the hosts ahead. This backs up last termโ€™s stats, where he scored all but one of his 27 goals for Atletico from inside the box, again highlighting an unselfish streak that is likely to see him find a team-mate rather than take a chance from distance. Indeed, Costa chalked up a highly impressive 95.5% pass accuracy in the final third on Monday.

Surprisingly, in spite of his physical presence, Costa isnโ€™t too great in the air. Last season in La Liga, he won just 26% of aerial challenges and this continued at Turf Moor, with just three successful from 10 attempts.

Nonetheless, the pairโ€™s overall contribution to the team cause shows exactly why Mourinho was so willing to splash the cash over the close-season. Fabregasโ€™ stats underline his Fantasy potential regardless of that deep-lying position alongside Matic and, although itโ€™s early days, Costaโ€™s disciplined displays as the lone forward could well prove beneficial to the likes of Hazard. The Belgian had the freedom to torment Burnley with nine successful dribbles on Monday evening but, as mentioned, failed to fire a single attempt. With Costa alongside him, though, Hazardโ€™s involvement in the final third certainly wasnโ€™t diminished, which suggests he will be as potent as ever once his match sharpness is up to scratch.

80 million would get this squad and the targets are realistic.

    1) Sky reported this about Benatia http://www1.skysports.com/news/11095/9426151/ but I think Bayern Munich have stepped in.
    2) Rojo will be announced today or tomorrow I guess, just waiting on a medical and personal terms.
    3) Not sure Blind is a target but he should be, why has LvG never been interested in any of his Dutch squad? Vlaar, de Vrij or Martins Indi would have been good if he really wants to play 3-5-2.
    4) This Vidal saga has been going on all summer, it needs to be put to bed or the money put down on the table. We need a CM for definite with Carrick and Fellaini out.

    ------------------------------------De Gea/Lindegaard/Amos----------------------------------

    ----------------Jones/Smalling--------Benatia*/Evans-------Rojo*/Blackett------------

    -----Rafael/Valencia----------------------------------------------------------Shaw/Blind*-----

    -------------------------Herrera/Cleverley------Vidal*/Carrick/Fletcher--------------------

    --------------------------------------Mata/Januzaj/Kagawa--------------------------------------

    -----------Rooney/Hernandez--------------------------------RVP/Welbeck-----------------

Would Chelsea and City squads still be stronger than this?

    OUT

    Nani (Loan to Sporting)
    Young (£12 million)
    Anderson (£4 million)
    Fellaini (Injured)

Blind said he'd find it hard to turn down a move to United if it came. Could all be bollocks but you never know.

But LvG may well assure him that's he's buying him as a midfielder afterall he said before the wc he was selecting him as a mid. Of he could end up playing in other positions if necessary but my point remains

Yep, I'm sure he'd be great in midfield. Provides good cover for other positions too.

Really don't know why we don't go out and try and sign him, sensible buy, as opposed to an outrageous one. Does LVG think he's not ready for the PL?

I really don't know, but if he's good enough for the going unbeaten to the semis in the wc he must be ready for the pl.

Last I heard (last week), there had been no contact between the clubs or the agent and Man Utd. Very strange.

Muller did not reject us. We inquired, along with other clubs, and he said he wanted to stay.

Apart from him it's only Vidal and Di Maria we're actually after. The rest is bollocks.

Not being funny mate, how do you know all this?!?! If you know anything about Man United you'll know that there is endless speculation linking them to hundreds of players picked at random, and that you shouldn't pay any attention to rumours until a player is holding up the shirt. What you've said will happen, who United will sign... Maybe a 5% chance?

I know because I don't pay attention to all the speculation. Only quotes from the people that matter. And Di Maria is a tough ask no doubt. But with PSG handcuffed by FFP we could very well pull it off. Blind and/or a holding CM player isn't unlikely at all. Quite the opposite in fact.

              Muller's quote...

"Yes, I knew I could earn more by moving. The figures that foreign clubs were talking about for me were astronomical. I can only say: a change was never really an issue for me anyway. FC Bayern is my club."

              Headline: MULLER REJECTS UNITED

Only 2/3 of those players would get into either the City or Chelsea squad. United are still way behind and I think it's naive to suggest that they're not.

Planning to play 3 defenders out of Terry, Naylor, Chester, Hutton and PVA.

Checked the betting websites and the possibility of cleansheets ranked from highest to lowest.
    Chelsea (home to Leicester)
    Swansea (home to Burnley)
    Hull (home to Stoke)
    Aston Villa (home to Newcastle)
    Sunderland (home to ManUtd)

So it makes most sense to start Terry, Naylor, Chester and then Hutton on bench in front of PVA correct? Just a tad worried about Hull after Europa, and whether PVA potential attack points could more than make up for the low odds of a cleansheet.

On another note, will you bench Henderson (away to ManCity) for any of the defenders above?

I am struggling to get a good mix of top players. Who are the must haves?

    Currently have
    Hazard/Mata/Ramsey/Mutch/Ince
    Costa/Rooney/Bojan

    No liverpool (sterling/sturridge)
    No Man City (Silva/Aguero)

I don't think City are must haves yet because of fixtures until GW 11. They will be later though.

Sterling for me is the biggest must-have in midfield right now. He'll score 15 this season, and at 8.5 thats great value in midfield. I think he's fairly fixture proof too, since he scored against City (twice), Spurs, and Arsenal and also won a pen against Everton last year.

Costa-Rooney is probably the go-to pairing at the moment. Its a good idea to try to have some flexibility though incase one of Sturridge or Aguero take off, in which case you'll want to upgrade quickly.

    Good afternoon Ladies and Gentleman.

    1. With the price rise/fall changing do we think this will make prices higher overall? It seems it's easier to rise and harder to drop now. Naughton/Shaw/Mata yet to drop.

    2. I want to make a shuffle to listen to while on here. It's only fair that since it's your words it should be your inspiration. So please give your fav/recommended album. All genres accepted.

Normally the main reason for dropping players is injury/suspension (asides for knee-jerking and loss of form) and with the red flag requiring additional transfers out Barrkly only just dropped as did Snoddy. Shaw, Nughton still not dropped. Just seems to be that way. 6 risers 3 fallers this week.

Absolutely. I don't disagree but as is shown 6 players up with only 3 dropping in what is a very busy week. Normally the mass exit is pretty quick in the case of injury/suspension and doesnt seem enough to lower a price.

Thanks for the help thus far.

Just curious if you have any tips on Macau. Day trip enough (say first ferry out and first ferry back) or recommend staying overnight? First time to HK and Macau and hoping to make best use of 3.5 days.

oooof got some torrid memories of that first ferry back after a long night out. some very cool and ridiculous clubs, most of which i dont remember the inside of!

Get there early in the morning/midday so you have enough time to sight-see. Do the usual tourist route and walk through the town up towards the fort for nice views. And then go gamble (responsibly) and watch the dance shows.. beware that most of the lad(ie)s dancing are 6ft3 though, but that might be your thing ๐Ÿ˜‰

I honestly have NO idea. Useful huh? I don't quite know if Koeman is keeping with the tactics from the weekend or going to the 4-3-3 of pre-season. I would think, as we haven't yet signed this winger he's going on about, that he will probably start. Not willing to put money on it though. ๐Ÿ˜›

I think people read too much into signings sometimes, you've seen at spurs with ben davies that buying a player doesnt automatically make them an instant starter, particularly when they've just joined & they're new to the club.

Yeah, I've been monitoring his movement, just wasn't sure if I could pinpoint an exact day.

        Thanks for the help!

That dreadful embedded video just underneath the login fields makes logging into FPL with a standard browser an excruciatingly slow experience, as character inputs get randomly ignored.

What bright spark decided to p*ss people off at the first point of contact with their product, I do not know.

Intrusive video embedding is pretty much on the first page of web design no-nos.

I don't know why any website still has automatically running videos. Some even have two or three on a homepage, which is mindblowingly stupid.

Forcefeeding people your product when they want to do something else will quickly turn people off your product. The web ad world struggles to come to terms with this, and treat exposure opportunities like missile strikes.

I think by this point in the week, everyone has literally run out of things to talk about but still can't seem to prize themselves away (raises hand).

For the most part, we've already decided whether we are making a transfer and in many cases already done it. We've had our teams setup for GW2 since Saturday and we're just waiting on team news before having a final looksie.

If anyone has any decisions to make, please share them with the forum for advice... This place is getting SUPER-BORING.

    "Bruce looking to strengthen squad"
Reckon Ince will still be a regular even when they sign a striker? tbh i just remember him from that horrible stint he had at Palace(though it may have been Pulis to blame). What are your thoughts on him? Young to Ince is very temptin

It seems you have it sorted. I would do it just to get off Young. However Ince does look nailed at the mo, especilly with Snoddy loss.

RMT please? Ive spent so much of the past 4 weeks + doing very little apart from FF..i think im going nuts. I was on my way to pick up my boy from nursery the other day and i said TO MYSELF - "oh better not forget to pick up Rooney" - then got home just in time for the Tesco shop guy, looked at a box of eggs and could have sworn it said "Costa" on it (it had nothing resembling the word Costa!!) - there was other stuff that happened which i can't remember now but i know I fell asleep thinking about Tadic and thinking "he looks better in his FF pic that real life".... Anyway my team please rate it?:

63 points in GW1 so far - just played my WC! Gotta tell you it's pretty awesome since it will be active right up until 23rd @ 11.30.

    So my Team:

    Krul
Jones / Yoshida (just really like him) / Hangerland (like him) / Drummett as a sub + Chester as sub
Mata (he better pay off) / Fab / Siggy / Eriksen / Sterling
    Costa / Rooney / Chamakh

Any replies are much appreciated ๐Ÿ˜›

You'll regret that move mate.. too early.. 63 was a good score.. You will need your WC when players will get injured, games cancelled, etc..

Let me see if I get some response after my avatar is in place ๐Ÿ™‚

Hull's squad gonna be a second team apparently.. Figs, Rosenior, Sagbo, Aluko etc. dont worry about europa. Either way we'll know by tomorrow night what team they put out
