Our Friday regular arrives as the minutes tick down until tomorrow’s deadline. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

Chelsea dominate this week’s poll, with three of their players populating the top-four places ahead of a home encounter against promoted Leicester. Diego Costa leads the way with over 50% of the votes cast after he netted on his debut away to Burnley on Monday evening – the Spain international scored 18 of his 27 goals for Atletico Madrid at home last year and clearly offers a stronger option in front of his own fans.

Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard trail in Costa’s wake, with 14% and 6% respectively. The Spaniard’s 11-point haul at Turf Moor showed that, even when fielded in the Blues’ double-pivot, he has the ability to wreak havoc, while Hazard’s owners will be looking for the Belgian to replicate last season’s displays at the Bridge, where the Belgian scored 10 of his 14 league goals. Certainly, his owners will be looking for an improved display in the final third – Hazard, along with Fabregas, failed to register a single attempt against The Clarets.

One of the few Fantasy successes in United’s home defeat by Swansea, Wayne Rooney has been backed with the armband by 8%  ahead of a testing trip to Sunderland. With Robin van Persie reportedly set to feature at the Stadium of Light, though, Rooney’s 48% popularity in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game may be set for a drop as managers consider the 3%-owned Dutchman, who is likely to be handed spot-kicks by Louis van Gaal.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, Aaron Ramsey and Raheem Sterling are all fancied to continue the form that served up a goal apiece in the opening weekend. Certainly, Sigurdsson looks the most promising of the bunch here as he prepares for a home encounter with Burnley – having averaged 5.7 points per game in his first spell with Swansea, a role in “the hole” looks vital to his prospects. Ramsey and Sterling face tougher tasks, though – trips to Everton and City are far from certain to bring home the points.

Sigurdsson’s team-mate Wilfried Bony has been overlooked. The Ivorian netted 13 times in his final 18 appearances of 2013/14 yet has so far received a mere 62 votes, whilst Sergio Aguero, as the most popular City option, has so far earned less than 1% of the votes cast and looks another differential armband option capable of delivering in style.

Since Costa had a good pre-season, good first showing in the BPL, is a proven goal-scorer and poacher, and has an excellent fixture (at home), he was the most obvious choice. ESBO has him down at the top of their list, and so it just seems like an obvious choice. Moreover, he's owned by many and he's probably the safest pick (esp. in many mini-leagues) and in the early part of the season it's probably better playing it safe IMO.

    Current team;

    Krul
Lovren, Filipe Luis, Wisdom (Bruce, Duff)
Mata, Sterling, Fabregas, Ramsey ( Marney)

    A) Silva for Mata

    D) Eriksen for Mata?
    E) Hold fire still with 1.5m in the bank...and two FTs next week

    So... who do want?

    A.The player who rises most

    B. The one that scores you most points?

We all know that on the first weeks of the season things are a little "hairy" but surely the aim of the game is to make to the most points. If your players score loads they will gain in value, but is it worth chasing anyone after just 1 GW of play?

I see many folks on here panic selling and WC-ing after just 1 GW, with their pre-season, carefully planned teams being decimated on the basis of 1 week's play.

    I'm a bit bemused.

Ridiculous how obsessed ppl are with an early pricerice, especially when it's on a player they never would consider if he suddenly did not go up .2 , .3...... This will come back ansbite them in the a**e as 4hey sooner or later want their original back

Just to play devil's advocate, and I'm not singling you out Vets, but just looking for a discussion - If people think that chasing value is such a bad idea, why the continued questioning and complaining about this tactic. Surely you should just let them get on with it?

No problem, Pasq. I'm putting my simplistic options out to try to get people to think about things. Think about why they picked their original players and why so many have taken hits or wc'd after the first week.

I think already know the answer... there seem to be a lot more "casuals" (hate that word) on here than in previous years and this we're getting a lot of bogus advice and actions here now.

Would like more time to discuss more on this and other matters but I'm now probably 5 pages behind 🙁

I'll stay on this one though.

I would even go so far as to say that the problem is that most bogus advice comes from older/revered/asteemed members who cares to much about winning.

I do. Obvious jokes and banter are a good thing for a forum, but when newbies gets their heads so twisted they can't even find their way home it's not fun anymore and there are many that are malicious unfortunately.....
Could be they get tired answering the same things over and over but just stip then, or say so.

Hrrrmmmm... to state the obvious, you should read a forum before entering it. OK, that's impossible but at least lurk for 30 mins. I ask a question once a month (if that) at the most as all my questions are asked and answered by others.

But the day we give up and let newbies be trolled constantly without saying someting we might just give it away and roll over and die.

For what it's worth - I think there needs to be some balance. Price chasing is clearly beneficial - especially in the last few seasons with the January Wildcard. But as time goes on it becomes less and less of an advantage. And with the price sites managing your squads TV is much easier than managing it's point scoring. One is predictable, the other not. I think that's why a few people do it. The tricky bits are knowing when you're burning too many points chasing price, and when to stop chasing price altogether.

I was going to post something similar to this later due to replies here. There has to be a balance between hits and points. Last year I took few hits and got slaughtered. I agree about knowing who is rising/falling and when but surely the main focus should be on making points?

As you say, it's all about balance and I think a few on this site have got a bit giddy.

In Mata's case, I think it's a combination of wanting to catch Cesc/Sterling/Ramsey rises, and the believe that the others will score more points. I'm swapping to Ramsey because I think I made a mistake not having him from the start. Mata could come good but United look woeful, and I don't really see RVP coming back as being the magic bullet.
