With Gameweek 2 now behind us, our attentions turn to the upcoming schedule as we assess the forthcoming four to six Gameweeks. Our first instalment takes a look at those sides with more favourable fixtures, with the Tyne-Wear duo and struggling United afforded reasons for optimism:

SUNDERLAND

“involvement

Having performed admirably in their clash against Man United at the weekend, it’s two points from two matches now for Gus Poyet’s side, and a superb run of fixtures awaits the Black Cats in the weeks ahead. The visit of in-form Tottenham to the Stadium of Light in two weekends’ time will undoubtedly be a tough encounter, but that fixture sits in between trips to newly promoted QPR and Burnley, which are then followed by home showdowns against Swansea and Stoke.

The main source of points for the Black Cats so far has come from the midfield, with goals from Seb Larsson, Lee Cattermole and Jack Rodwell inspiring their side against West Brom and United. The former has set piece duties in his favour and also chipped in with an assist on Sunday afternoon to boost his prospects, though is the most expensive of the trio at 5.5 (compared to 4.5 and 5.0 respectively).

Up top, Steven Fletcher is yet to get his scoring tally underway, though has been fielded as the most advanced forward in his side’s opening two fixtures and looks most likely to benefit from the creativity of those in behind him. Sunderland’s defence, meanwhile, have maintained their budget appeal for this season, despite accumulating 11 shut-outs in their last league campaign. Vito Mannone (who totalled a noteworthy 134 points last year) is still first choice between the sticks and on offer for 4.5, though for the same price, Fantasy managers can acquire Patrick van Aanholt, whose strong performances at left-back since joining Poyet’s side from Chelsea in the summer have attracted our attentions.

MAN UNITED

“involvement

It’s a shame that Louis Van Gaal’s acknowledgement that he’s a slow starter with new clubs is holding so true, as United struggle to justify our heavy level of investment. Nonetheless, a strong set of opening fixtures continues for the Red Devils as they welcome QPR and West Ham to Old Trafford in their next six, with trips to Burnley, Leicester and West Brom also holding plenty of promise for the out-of-form Red Devils. Everton’s visit to the Theatre of Dreams in Gameweek 7 will be their first big test of the season, but Van Gaal will be optimistic that, by then, his side will have begun to click and better the performances evident in their loss to Swansea and 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Sunday.

The 12.5-priced Robin Van Persie made a somewhat unconvincing comeback against the Black Cats, and will be hoping to get back up to stride quickly to help his side overcome their current slump. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney remains the most popular player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with an incredible 46% ownership, though his team’s poor form has already seen over 40,000 managers jump ship since the weekend.

Subject to a mass exodus and a subsequent price drop to 8.9 last week, Juan Mata came back to haunt those who traded him out with a 10-point display against Sunderland – with the fixtures in his favour, the Spaniard could now cement himself as a key midfield option in the weeks ahead, though it remains to be seen how the potential signing of Angel Di Maria would affect the playmakers role in the side. Faith in United’s rearguard assets is understandably low, though Phil Jones’ displays in the first couple of Gameweeks have been reassuring, with an assist against Swansea indicative of his superior appeal over his defensive team-mates.

SOUTHAMPTON

“involvement

An opening-day defeat to Liverpool may not have been the ideal start for new manager Ronald Koeman, but the Saints performed well enough to convince many of their doubters that the season ahead may not be as doom-and-gloom as many had predicted. Whilst last Saturday’s 0-0 stalemate with West Brom was hardly full of attacking verve, a clean sheet and first point of the campaign for Koeman’s side should give them some momentum ahead of a strong set of upcoming fixtures. Home matches against Newcastle, QPR and Sunderland hold plenty of promise for further defensive returns, with trips to West Ham, Swansea and Tottenham also featuring in their next six.

Currently the fifth highest scoring defender in FPL, Nathaniel Clyne burst onto radars with a goal against Liverpool on the opening weekend, though it was Jose Fonte and Maya Yoshida who were the main beneficiaries on Saturday, after picking up three and two bonus points respectively. Fonte may be the most expensive of the trio at 5.5, but his penchant for acquiring bonus points, allied with his threat from set pieces, make him the most attractive asset in the Saints’ backline right now.

In midfield, James Ward Prowse will be looking to make the most of a share of set pieces, and at 5.0 the youngster could be a steal, whilst new signing Dusan Tadic will be hoping to build upon his debut assist against Liverpool. Up top, Koeman will be eager to see new boys Shane Long and Graziano Pelle build an understanding in the coming weeks – the former is up for grabs for just 6.0, and has the fixtures to cement his place in the side whilst Jay Rodriguez remains sidelined.

NEWCASTLE

“involvement

Two games and no goals for the Tyneside team doesn’t bode too well, but home fixtures against Crystal Palace and Hull City in the next three should provide them with a chance to get their tally up and running. On the other hand, a clean sheet against Aston Villa at the weekend has seen a number of their defensive options climb our Watchlist and, should they take advantage of their favourable fixture list, they may climb further still.

Between the sticks, Tim Krul is available for a mere 4.5 after a leaky campaign last time out and currently rests at the summit of our goalkeeper Watchlist. In defence, Fabricio Coloccini is available for the same price as Krul and picked up maximum bonus points in Saturday’s 0-0 draw to ensure he remains our defender of choice for Alan Pardew’s side.

Further up the field, Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere have offered plenty of creativity and drive over Newcastle’s opening two fixtures without any returns to show for it, suggesting that Siem De Jong may be the attacking asset du jour. Returning from a calf injury at Villa Park for the final 20 minutes of the encounter, the 7.0-priced midfielder came closest to netting for his side and gave Fantasy managers an impressive first taste of his talents.

Also Consider

Crystal Palace
Managerless, surrounded by controversy off the field, and with two defeats in their first two matches, Palace’s fortunes aren’t looking too great at the moment. Nonetheless, the Eagles have home encounters with Burnley and Leicester in their next four to turn things around, whilst this weekend’s trip to goalless Newcastle won’t hold too much fear. Joel Ward and co will be confident of clean sheets, then, whilst Jason Puncheon – now back from a one-match suspension – has the platform to find the form that saw his popularity surge towards the end of last season.

Stoke
A late equaliser from Ryan Shawcross against 10-man Hull City on Sunday brought the Potters their first point of the season, and once they are on the other side of this weekend’s trip to Man City on Saturday, Mark Hughes’ side will be looking to kick on as their fixture list (LEI, qpr, NEW, sun, SWA) picks up immensely. In goal, Asmir Begovic remains a popular pick with 9.4% ownership and could be primed to prove his worth, whilst Bojan Krkic’s legion of owners will be hoping the forward can shake off a knock and live up to his pre-season form by delivering the points.

Liverpool
Monday night’s defeat at the hands of Man City will have a few minds wondering whether Brendan Rodgers’ side really can maintain last season’s quality without a certain Uruguayan on board. Encounters with Tottenham and Everton in their next six will put the Merseyside outfit under the spotlight once again, though trips to West Ham and QPR, allied with the visits of Aston Villa and West Brom to Anfield hold promise for the attacking fortunes of Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge, both of whom will be eager to press on after their opening weekend goals against Southampton. With injury worries at the back, few will be willing to invest in the Reds until they show some signs of resilience.

So the question is basically, do I start Jones away to Burnley given Uniteds terrible form or Rio at home to Sunderland after QPR conceding 4 last time out?

Yeah leaning towards that given that QPR are dreadful at the back and Burnley don't offer much going forward (well neither do MK Dons but anyway..)

    Need some advice.

    I'm looking to do

    Zamora to jovetic

    And

    Eriksen to a 4.5

    Is it worth a -4 hit ?

I'll be captaining Jov to make up for it.

No, Jovetic's game time could start to dwindle a bit, Eriksen has been good just unlucky to get in the points so far

      imo.

In that case I might stick and just captain Rooney.

I think Jovetic is a good pick for this week, but i dunno if it's worth a hit and dropping Eriksen. Eriksen worth giving a couple more weeks I think.

Rooney should be a good captain choice. If he blanks against Burnley then I'll drop him for Kun.

I have Cameron, Bruce & Bartley
need a defender urgently as they are not playing and their prices are falling. What cheap defenders you recommend?
I already did Sanchez to Ramsey this week
have 1.4 in the bnk, 1 free transfer left but i'm desperate to transfer Bojan too.
    I'm open take a hit.

Believe me. United fans are well aware of the fact that we are a shambles at the moment.

But we have had big injury problems. Our midfield is absolutely awful apart from Herrera & Carrick, who have both been injured. Things chance fast in football though. Reckon we'll be a lot stronger in a few weeks with Rojo, di Maria & hopefully another mid to come in.

yes. injury wasn't serious and no way Kun will play more than 60 mins. So at least 30 mins for Dzeko which is enogh for him. I'm thinking it will be better for him to come on as a sub as he might have more of an impact

Wish your team all the best in the remainder of the competition. The better team won.

Might actually root for you. It's a more dignified loss when it's time the eventual competition winners 😉

Or Carrick the deepest with Herrera and Mata side by side, but I don't think Mata has the mobility to really warrant inclusion there, really depends on where Di Máría is.

If so then that would be horrendously weak through the middle. Without Mata it would beach easier to find a formation that works. Two strikers, a CAM and a midfield three or pair of wingers combined doesn't work. Your formation is too weak in the middle of the park, needs more Vidal

Yea that's the team,i like that. But Di Maria has said last night that he's been told he's playing on the left side of the midfield like he did for Madrid last season. If thats the case then Mata plays behind Rooney and RVP. With Di Maria on the left of a 3 in Midfield. We shall see who's right when he plays. Good luck for the season with your team mate. Good discussion. 🙂

Yeah left cm in my midfield three works. Just think a solid three in midfield beats two and having to accommodate Mata who doesn't defend, much more solid. You may be right initially but it's not sustainable I think Mata should be sold in summer. You too pal

That first formation is exactly what I said except I put RVP over Mata as I can't see him being left out. The second formation there is no way a fit Luke Shaw would be left out but maybe Di Maria could play over Valencia and Fletcher/Fellaini would play over Januzaj. Don't think Mata has the attributes to play in a 3 man midfield like that though. It will be interesting indeed

              That looks awful.

I'd prefer we buy Coleman and do this:

              .............De Gea

              Coleman, Jones, Rojo, Shaw

              ................Herrera

              Januzaj, Rooney, Mata, Di Maria

              ..................RVP

              4141 formation (like Arsenal)!

Same could be said of Arsenal to be fair (I think they played Arteta in the anchor position).

LVG could also get the team to park the bus as soon as they lose the ball but break with fast counter attacks (pace on the wings). If we're having a good game against a weak team we'll play a bit like Liverpool (all out attack).

At least it will stop us looking like scared school boys on the pitch.

It also utilises the 5 best talents in our club (that front 5).

See just below. This formation would be gambling on us doing well enough in attack to cover defensive frailties. I wouldn't play this formation against the top 6 teams though!

But we don't have Coleman. So that's not a valid team. Very similar though, you're just being picky in formation. Rooney in Midfield, no thanks. Herrera as defence mid? Terrible.

I know we don't have Coleman (you can put Rafael in there if you want). I really wish we were linked with Coleman 🙁 I can't believe Moyes chased Baines & Fellaini and ignored Coleman!

Formation matters! Herrera knows how to put in a tackle but yes this would be pretty defensively weak, but I feel it would give us enough of an attacking threat to get top 4 this season.

Rooney would be in RAM with Mata at LAM, I think Rooney would be fine there as long as LVG instructed him to give and go and not to ever dwell on the ball like he sometimes does.

Coleman would have been good. Glad we didn't get Baines as well. I think he will play Carrick as def mid when he's back because he can drop back to make the 3rd centre back if needed and he can then be the player that brings the ball out of defence (we really need a player to do this) and with his passing and defence work i think that;s the way to go, with Herrera playing further forward with Di maria. But we all have deference opinions i guess.

The problem I have with your suggested formation (which I think is a diamond?) is that it has no width. But if you're saying Carrick drops into CB when we attack then I can now see where you're going with it. I don't think it would work with Rafael but could be decent if we had Coleman & Shaw bombing down the wings 😉

I still prefer the prospect of once again scaring teams by attacking them and pressing them with this front 5:

                      Januzaj, Rooney, Mata, Di Maria

                      .....................RVP

To me that is an attack that could take on the biggest defences in the world and should hopefully be enough to counter balance any goals we concede when playing mid table PL clubs.

Is Mutch dropping tonight? Worth getting rid of him for a hit then? Who to get instead?

Tadic has looked great though I wouldn't be mad at you if you Lamela had another great week

Asked a similar question earlier but gonna give it one more go before I pull the trigger. Wanted to downgrade Young to an up to 5.0 MF who will be my 5th midfielder. I've narrowed to the following options:

            a) JWP
            b) Rodwell
            c) Albrighton
            d) Marney
            e) Other

Rodwell might be good value once he gets up to full match fitness.

You shouldn't have to play them, so it shouldn't matter too much

But i would get a) because of fixtures, he's ok. But I prefer albrighton

Cheers guys. Leaning towards JWP as well though as my 5th midfielder with his fixtures and set pieces though he won't see the pitch too often so perhaps getting a 4.5 might be the best option

i need him just for Stoke (H), then i will probably go Kolarov > Vert or Kolarov > Kompany

Siggy seems like a seasonkeeper and i think ive waited just about long enough to get him in...

            DDG
            Cahill Wisdom Colocini Chester Rio
            Lamela Hazard Rambo Young Marney
            Rooney Costa Dzeko

            2FT and 0 banked.
            DDG - > Krul
            Young - > Siggy

            Seems fine?

I have Studge and Rooney and I'm not sure about them, but i think we should stick with them for now.

Midfield is identical to me except for mata (i have silva)

Maybe get in a chelsea defender... would be hard to fund i guess....

Good stats , good fixtures ...and did at the end of last year

They must have spent more than PSG in the last 5 windows but cry about teams like City and Chelsea buying titles.

            Currently on:

            Krul
            Debuchy Terry Evans
            McCarthy Siggy Hazard Ramsey Sterling
            Bony Rooney

I have Bojan on the bench. I want to sub out McCarthy i think but not sure who to... I have 6.7 mil I was thinking maybe Larsson? Sunderland have a decent upcoming fixture list... would cost me 4 points though, worth it?

Any captain tips? I was going on either Siggy or Ramsey...

Alot of talking points about the United result:

            1) Do people expect players who have been told they are not needed to perform? Once I've handed in my notice at work I literally do what I want, and take my foot off the gas.

            2) 3-5-2: It takes a special group of players to effectively carry out the system. City tried it last season with a much more versatile and talented squad and found it tough. Perhaps LVG should stick to 4 at the back for the time being.

            3) Everyone is overstating Uniteds dimise. Shaw, Rojo, Herrera, Di Maria....these players will no doubt improve the team, and only when they have all played do I think it is fair to cast judgement on the squad as a whole.

            4) This and the FA Cup are the only two competitions United have a realistic chance in...not sure why the first team squad needed a rest?

Probably posed more questions than answers.

They struggled like mad with Evra at full back who is a better player than Shaw last year.
