Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Asia has so far been relatively straightforward. Three games, three wins, no goals conceded and with every passing game, Andre Villas-Boas’ side are looking more threatening.

From a Fantasy perspective, however, matters are not quite so positive. Speaking at a press conference in Hong Kong, Andres Villas-Boas suggested that even his favoured formation, the 4-3-3, may possibly be open to change:

We have this idea of a 4-3-3 and we are focusing on it at the moment. It doesn’t mean we won’t go to other formations because you have to have this flexibility to challenge for the Premiership.

I think with the players’ experiences they are more able to do it. The 4-3-3 is a system for us in the end where it is not just a striker, it is three forwards in the end, and we have this flexibility in the squad.

It’s early days for Villas-Boas and with the club yet to make a significant move in the transfer market, it’s clear the new boss is weighing up every player currently in the Blues squad before turning his focus on replenishment.

What has been significant so far is the use of Yossi Benayoun- the Israeli made just 1 start and 6 sub appearances in an injury-blighted first season at Stamford Bridge but Villas-Boas has been utilising his talents as part of the Chelsea front three. Indeed, the player was singled out by the new boss, who suggested his inclusion offers the side more variety:

Yossi is a creative player coming from the channels to between the lines, so we have the flexibility to try different structures. We tried 4-4-2 in a diamond against Malaysia, 4-2-3-1 against Thailand in the second half, so we are getting bits and pieces with other formations, and we are pretty happy at the moment and not focusing a lot on the striking positions.

Starting at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League -and classified as a midfielder- Benyoun could come into our thinking as an out-of-position player in the upcoming campaign if Villas-Boas decides to lean towards a definite starting XI next season. At present, though, this only increases the number of options available to Fantasy managers eyeing up Chelsea targets. Benayoun now seems likely to fight it out with Florent Malouda, Daniel Sturridge, Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka for the two wide forward positions, as Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba continue to do battle for the lone central striker role.

The one real positive aspect here was the candid nature of the new manager- Villas-Boas seems quite happy to talk in length with regards to his thinking and Fantasy managers will be hoping his Friday press conferences mirror those of Carlo Ancelotti. The former Blues boss was the most “Fantasy friendly” manager of recent times, with his tendency to announce the Chelsea starting line-up a day or two in advance.

Given that last season’s runners-up have (WBA, NOR, SWA) in their first six games of the season, Fantasy managers will be hoping for more of the same clarity; with Chelsea likely to score big in those three games, second-guessing their players is a headache none of us need.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not sure how much use this is but top 10 players using average points per game on EA index are as follows:- Vidic 15.7, Malouda 17.4, Kuyt 17.1, Nasri 15.4, Lampard 17.8, Tevez 17.5, Berbatov 18.2, Odemwingie 15.8 , Van Persie 18.1, Rooney 17.8
No major surprises really. Goes to show that a fit RVP and Rooney are a must with the new scoring system. Would be more helpful if we knew weekly EA index scores so we could work out who would have got BPs each game but data doesn’t seem to be available

The top player last season and top premiership assister has been totally neglected in any team – Nani

A team (Aston Villa) with a GD of -11 at the end of the season!! has the most chosen goalie who played 4 times last yr and none in the league!!!

This can only be preseason bandwagon banter – Is our favourite captain Nani now long forgotten? And when did Shay Given become FFS top player to pick!?

    On another note:-

    Barton and Graham

    or

    Sessengnon and Hulse ??

FF pre season is like this..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6sOzEQn-Ng (Clean link)

The logic though is that Nani has hefty rotation risks and indifferent fixtures. Aston Villa now have a defensive manager and a daycent defence anyways.

Given is a shot stopper, so plenty of saves anyways.

      ..Barton and Graham...:-)

Fair points. Nani is a massive rotation risk but of course will still score well when he plays. It is never a good thing having a player sitting on his arse doing nothing though.
Villa should be better at the back but you make good points. Everyone is acting like Given is comparable to Cech and Hart, yet only 5 million. He is nowhere near as good as either of those players!

C doesit for me, VP and Caroll should tuck enough away to allow for a gamble on moses and sinclair.

      This is mine:

      Yaya, Lampard, Nzog, Sinclair (tiote)
      VP, Suarez, Ba

      What do you think?

I'd swap Tiote for Dyer (Dyer will score way more points) and swap Ba for Rodallega (Wigan play three promoted teams in first three matches) and then I think you're onto a beauty 🙂

Downgrade Torres or Rooney to a cheap option like Rodallega or Holt and use the extra money to get a stronger third and maybe fourth defender, and a stronger fourth midfielder 🙂 If you're still struggling on money, maybe downgrade Baines.

Your defense is...well you know already with that attack 🙂

I presume Baines and Kompany will play every game, with rotation for the 3rd spot.

Attack is sexy. Well id hold fire on Suarez for now, until we get a better idea if he will start.

Downing is a rotation risk/not sure starter. Id say he will start..but..Same with Torres.

Allot of people around here fancy O'Hara, he is on some set pieces, but I prefer a fairly consistent Jarvis myself.

          Thanks,

Yeah I figure I'll just play baines and kompany every week, with kompany potentially being able to pick up a CS any week and Baines offering attacking potential every week, and then just rotate in one of the cheap defenders each week as I'm definitely going to be playing 3 strikers each week.

Ya I'll wait to see what the rest of pre-season holds for torres and downing.

I've always been a big O'Hara fan, not sure if this new bonus point system is going to hurt him or not as he previously picked up BP fairly consistently. Think I'm going to see how he starts and go from there.

Not sure about Robinson...that Given lad eh. Well if dead set against him, Al Habsi for the first few weeks could be worth a punt. Great fixtures.

Id avoid Ferdinand, indifferent fixtures and a sick note waiting to happen.

Mid field is grand, Young a rotation risk, if your set on a Man U winger, id get Valancia. Cheaper.

Id use the spare funds from any above changes to uprgade Ba.

That way, you can have a copy and paste team like the rest of us 🙂

tbh i havent looked, i need a new laptop n car so money is going on that rather than bets at the moment

saying that i have had £20 on forest green to beat city tonight after seeing our lineup, 15/4 with bet365

i fancy liverpool to do well but always seems with hcap bets like that a dark horse from lower down takes it

yeh i cmopared it to last year and villa were 3rd last year and they had a rubbish season man city were -6 which was nice at 12 to 1 as well if backing each way that is.

yeh fair enough not puting as much money on. our lineup tonight is awful. we desperatley need 2 defenders or were going to struggle again..

haha i like that shout. were open at the back as it is without caulker and spence. iv heard we ahve made enquiries for some decent defenders loan wise but there refusing to commit in the hope a bigger club comes in for them for loan.

i made a few quid doing it during millens caretaker spell

playing with 2 out n out wingers when u dont have a solid backline is suicide but it will make for some excitin games

also aston villa on the handicap were pretty huge -28 which could well happen if you back it each way on at odds of about 18 to 1 when i looked..

Then who would be a good replacement for that sort of money? Last year there was an abundance of players for that money for example yaya toure this year there isn't many.

hmm, are you thinking of predominently a benchwarmer? or someone that would play?

I reckon you could go for tiote.. I got a feeling that he'll make an impact this season but he loves getting yellows.

Howdy folks! Been a while since I've been on here but I guess its that time of the season again. Just did my first draft of players and wouldn't mind another opinion or two on if I'm headed in the right direction.

        GK: Given / Kenny

        DEF: A. Cole / Kompany / Rafael / Alcaraz / Simpson

        MID: Yaya / N'Zogbia / Taarabt / Arteta / Sinclair

FWD: RVP / Suarez / Holt

Having no Chelsea attacking cover for their decent first string of games worries me though.

Solid team, pretty much the copy and paste team on here. Except for Arteta, who is croaked last I heard.

Might want to hold fire on Suarez and Rafael till the season kicks off, Suarez is a 50/50 I reckon on whether he will start the first two games, Rafael has indifferent fixtures and rotation risk, though you do have the defenders to cover him if he is.

Lack of Chelsea cover as you say, but hard to pin down one solid attacking option from Chelsea at the moment, except maybe Lamps.

Thanks for the repies fellas! Yeah I'm still iffy on Arteta and with this 50/50 on Suarez I'm thinking of maybe downgrading Suarez so I can bring in VDV for Arteta.

I've got VDV, Bent and RVP. All on pens and any goals thier teams score will more than likely involve them. I downgraded NZogbia to do this because Imo if Aston Villa score it should involve Bent but it won't always involve Nzogbia (although I think he will do very well this season)

        A) OHara

        OR

        B) Barton

Ohara on pens when Doyle not on the pitch? Will Mick play 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 with Ohara behind striker?

Will Barton be the main playmaker and play behind the striker untill Ben Arfa is back?
